Kostya Tszyu was a Russian boxer born in 1969 in Serov, Russia. He began boxing at age 9 when his father brought him to a local youth boxing center. Tszyu had great success as an amateur boxer, becoming champion of his city, district, and region as a youth. As an adult, he won gold medals at the USSR Championships from 1989-1991 and won European Championships in 1989 and 1991. During his amateur career, Tszyu won medals at world and European championships for juniors and adults. He had an amateur record of 282 fights with 270 victories.
