Maria Isakova was a Soviet speed skater born in 1918 in Vyatka, Russia. She started skating at a young age and enjoyed much success, winning numerous national championships between 1936-1951. She became the first woman to win gold in speed skating at the World Championships in 1948 and 1949. Isakova held the world record in the 1,500m in 1951. Following her competitive career, she trained athletes and wrote a book about her experiences. She received high honors for her achievements and is still commemorated today in Russia.
