2. What is Embedded system?
An embedded system is a microprocessor
based system.
It is a combination of computer hardware as
well as software either fixed in capability or
programming that is specially designed for a
particular function.
Something embed into a system (large
system).
3. Applications of embedded system
1. Automotive devices
like robots.
2. Consumer electronics
like: car, microwave,
washing machine,
fridge etc.
4. Advantages of Embedded system
1. Reliability
2. Security purpose
3. Real time operations
4. Energy efficient
5. Cost effective
6. System on a chip, that’s why size compact.
5. Microprocessor
It is a CPU like computers, which contains no
RAM, no ROM and no I/O ports on the chip
itself.
They all are connected externally.
The power consumption is about 220v and size is
also small with high clock speed.
Microcontroller
It is a single chip IC (integrated circuit) consist
internally memory like RAM, ROM and I/O
ports.
6. Microprocessor Microcontrollers
2. Clock cycle is:
1GHz- 4GHz
1MHz – 300MHz
3. RAM:
512 MB- 8GB
128 byte- 32KB
4. Power consumption and
size: power is high and large
in size
power consumption is very
low & small in size

8. Buses and its types
Buses are used to transfer the information
from one place to other.
In other words its nothing but a group of
wires.
Buses are of three types:
Buses
Address bus
(16 bit )
Data bus
(8 bit )
Control bus
9. Embedded applications of microcontrollers
In household items:
Toys, cameras, video recorder, TVs', washing
machine, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaner
etc.
Office and communication equipments:
Fax machine, printers, ATM machine, smart
cards, mobile phones etc.
