Pollution is devastating. The reason why I researched this topic is that I do not want my family
nor my planet to get sick. Pollution can be stopped very easily, it's just that people "don't know"
how to stop or they just don't care, which is a serious problem. I want people to see that pollution
is mainly caused by humans, and also for them to see that it is a horrible thing that is happening.
Some kids litter because they see their parents and their whole family doing it. When I was
researching this topic, I noticed that I needed to find out more information, so I asked questions
to myself. When did pollution get so bad? How many animals have gone extinct because of
pollution? How many people die each year because of pollution? How much does everyone on
the planet pollute each year? What is the best way to stop pollution? Can just one person make a
difference? After a lot of research, I found out lots of ways that we can stop pollution, so it is
possible to end it. Or at least improve the air. Pollution is caused by people littering, throwing their
trash everywhere, wasting energy, and burning fuel from vehicles. Pollution effects all animals and
plants from around the world. It can harm them and kill them. Some animals have gone extinct

The Pollution Prevention Act 1990 (PPA) came into existence in order to raise the interest in reducing
pollution from the source or in another word Pollution Prevention in a way which encourages
efficient cost reduction practice from the source.
This policy by the United State according to this act mandated that pollution be prevented and most
especially reduced from the source. It further states that, in an instance where pollution in
unavoidably or unable to be prevented, then recycling of such waste should be done considering the
safety and well being of the environment and the people. In a case where it is not possible to
prevent pollution or recycled, such need to be treated in a safe manner to protect to reduce any
hazardous environment (Burnett, 2000).
The act explains source reduction as such practice that will reduce the quality of all hazardous
substance, pollution or any contaminant that enters waste stream or that is released to the
environment before it is recycled, treated or disposed. It is a means to reduce any hazards caused to
the health of the public and the ecosystem in connection with the release of any pollutant.

was not even a concern till about 20 years ago, we are paying for mistakes of the past as well. For
years the oil refinery business went unregulated and companies dumped their products where they

As I look out at the beautiful ocean, the silky sand and gorgeous seashells lay underneath my feet.
The blue waves crashing down onto the shore. The ocean is truly a beautiful sight to see.
However, we are slowly ruining this beautiful thing because of the way we treat this planet, the
ocean is extremely polluted and marine life is paying for it. A few of the ways mankind is
damaging marine life is by heavy oil pollution, and exposing marine life to dangerous chemicals.
One way our oceans are polluted is because big companies like Princesses Cruises are caught
"accidentally" dumping oil into the sea. In 2013 the Caribbean Princess Cruise Ship was caught
illegally spilling 4,227 gallons of oily water off the coast of England and records say they have been
doing this since 2005 (Department of Justice) In an oil spill the majority of the oil tends to float and
clump at the surface. Which harms wildlife because mammals who hunt fish need the surface
clear in order to catch their prey. In addition to that, if the oil were to enters the water column the
fish and other creatures will be greatly affected. The oil will cause reproductive damage in adult
fish and will decrease their growth drastically. Also, if the fish eggs and larvae come in contact
with oil could cause death or lower their survival rate greatly. On top of that, the most damage to
wildlife is done when the oil washes on the shores because of the damaging effects it has to birds
that live on or by the shore. With birds the oil will destroy the water repealing and insulating

Air pollution is a major problem affecting the entire world. In the United States some progress has
been made in reducing air pollution through the Clean Air Acts passed by the Congress. Still there
is a lot to be done. To prevent air pollution it is important to understand how the air is being
polluted, how it impacts on the ecosystem and what we can do about it.
Earth is surrounded by layers of gases known as atmosphere. The layer closest to the earth is called
the troposphere. It extends up to ten miles above the surface of the earth. Over the troposphere is the
stratosphere which extends from ten to forty miles above the earth ( Gutnick pg. 9). Ozone is a part of

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas which is emitted through the process of
incomplete combustion of fossil fuel. Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas that, when inhaled,
combines with the blood and renders them incapable of carrying oxygen. Methane occurs as a
principal ingredient in natural gas, and is produced by the bacterial decomposition of plant and
animal matters. Methane in the troposphere absorbs heat and causes greenhouse effect ( Gutnik pg.
15).
A sulfur based gas occurs mostly as sulfur dioxide (SO2) which is a colorless, tasteless, foul smelling
, heavier–than–air gas. Besides naturally produced from activities of the volcanoes or
decomposition of organic material in swamps, it also is produced by the burning of sulfur
containing fossil fuels. Sulfur dioxide combines with water vapor in the air, forming sulfurous acid
(H2SO3), a major component of acid rain ( Gutnik pg. 15).
Ozone is a form of oxygen (O3) and a major air pollutant in the troposphere. It is very harsh and

pollution. Some of the problems we face on earth are: deforestation, nuclear waste, acid rain, global

Solid waste such as tires, diapers and plastics are buried in landfills each year. It takes generations
for them to decompose. Today, there are laws that penalize manufacturing plants that dispose
hazardous wastes. These plants dump these hazardous materials in nearby woods or dump them into
streams (this practice was common fifty years ago). We need rain forests for survival. Rain forests
pump fresh oxygen into the atmosphere, protect soil from erosion and absorb carbon dioxide.
Rain forests cover 4.5 billion acres and accounts for 7 percent of the earth's land. The Amazon in
Brazil is the largest rain forest (2 million acres). The fate of today's rain forest is in trouble. A
process called deforestation is the leading problem. Deforestation is the process of cutting down
forests to use the land for farming and grazing cattle. Farmers "slash and burn" forest turning them
into desert land. Brazil promised to implement laws that were tougher to protect the Amazon.
These laws cut deforestation in half. By 1994, the burning started again and in 1996 the burning
was at it's worst. The ozone layer blocks harmful ultraviolet rays, that comes from the sun.
Chemicals released from the earth are depleting the ozone layer. Skin cancer is on the rise as a

destroys living things and materials. Diesel exhaust is one of the most dangerous sources of air

Angus Smith published a book called 'Acid Rain' in 1872. In the 1960s, the problems associated

wet form (such as rain, snow and fog or it can fall in a dry form (such as gas particles). Once the
acid rain falls the runoff water adds those acids to fully acid rain making the combination more
