1. Career Goals
Essay Question: What are your short–term and long–term career goals? How will the Columbia
Business School MBA help you achieve these goals? I have always been told to figure out what
you like to do and then make a career out of it. Eight years ago, armed with this bit of philosophy,
I set out to find out what I liked to do. Before entering college I realized that my interests lay in
business. In college, my courses in business were the ones looked forward to the most, and my
business projects and presentations were the most challenging and rewarding of all my
undergraduate course work. So, it was easy for me to decide to pursue a career in business when I
graduated from college, leading to a career as a defined contribution...show more content...
While I have gained some international exposure in my current role, I know that there is still a
great deal more than I need to learn before I can achieve my dream of building a business in the
Asia market. The programs and resources that Columbia offers in international business will help
me to bolster my knowledge in this area. I would love to have the chance to participate in the
Chazen Institute's exchange program with a partner school, especially the Chinese University of
Hong Kong. Not only would I learn a lot by participating in this program, but I am also confident
that I could teach my fellow students the things that I have learned in my previous Chinese
studies. Also, given the fact that I want to one day pursue a life of entrepreneurship, I am
interested in Columbia's emphasis on this area. While I do not plan on launching my new venture
immediately after school, I would like to participate in the Columbia Entrepreneurs Organization
or compete with a team in a business plan competition. There are so many bright students
attending Columbia from all over the globe, I am excited about exploring the idea of
entrepreneurship with them. My professional experiences thus far have enabled me to learn a great
deal while reaching my aggressive professional goals. I know I will maintain the personal
dedication and hard work necessary to achieve even greater goals in the next ten years. These

2. Choosing a Career Essay
My whole life I have always wanted to do something where people will remember me. I went
threw millions of career choices before I came to the conclusion of a nurse. It's not something
that will get me into History books, but its something where all the people I help will remember
what I did to care for them or their loved ones. My mom went to school to become and RN, but
dropped out when she became pregnant with me. After that story was told to me, I didn't want to be
anything related to nursing. It wasn't until my step mom went to school to be LPN that I realized it
would be possible for me to do. I saw how much happiness it gave her, and I want the same thing.
She loved helping the patients by treating them, and helping their families...show more content...
It is a program that is based on the health career field, especially nursing. I have this course for
three classes a day and it takes up most of my school day. These classes have given me invaluable
information and training that will be very useful in my collage courses. My volunteer work at the
Veterans Hospital will also help me with becoming a RN because it is sort of like on–the–job
training. I get to experience working with patients, in a real hospital setting. My step mom has lots
of her old nursing books from her LPN training. I frequently look into them to help me with my
Diversified Health Occupations homework, and sometime just to see how something works, or is
done. Everyone knows that health careers tend to make a decent amount of money, but according to
the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "the average amount of money that an RN makes is between
$47,710 and $69,850" (Registered Nurses). You typically work about fifty to sixty hours a week, on
a normal shift. Meaning, 7a.m. to 3p.m., 3 p.m. to11 p.m. and 11p.m–7a.m. During your shift you
will have to treat patients, educate the patient on how to care for themselves properly, provide
assistance and emotional support for the patients and the families of the patients, administer
medication, provide rehabilitation, use medical machinery, record symptoms and medical history,
as well as do follow up follow up records. As I learned from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, RN's

3. Essay on dream career
My Dream Career
Selecting a career is the most important decision in a person's life. The Health care industry has a
good future in the United States of America. According to the American Department of Labor, the
Medical assistant is one of the fastest growing health care professions. I have always been inclined
towards health care and therefore I decided to be a medical assistant. To become a medical assistant
one should possess different qualities. But the most important quality is to be a very responsible
person.
The duties of a medical assistant vary in every office depending on the specialty of the doctor. Some
of the administrative duties remain the same in every office....show more content...
After having my lunch, I used to prepare notes for my students to teach them in the evening. I used
to teach my students between 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.. After coming home, I used to work on my
college assignments till late night. I continued like this for 3 years and successfully managed to get
my Bachelors degree in Accounting in May, 2001.
After one year, I got married to Devang Joshi. Within a week after wedding we came to America,
20,000 miles away from India. I was surrounded with new people, different culture and a very
different life style. Initially none of us had a job, so managing first few months was really
difficult. As we were newly weds we had to make many compromises financially. For example,
we had to avoid going to restaurants or for shopping. I didn't know driving, because of which I
had to be very dependent on my husband to go out for groceries and other home necessity. But
slowly and slowly we started to settle down, as he found a part time job and I learned driving. Then
my husband decided to do further studies.
Few months later, I found a job in a restaurant where I worked all seven days. This put an end to my
social life. I didn't get enough time to spend with my husband. After coming home late night from
work, I had to do the house chores. I couldn't expect much from my husband, as he was busy with his
studies. But still I managed long work hours and home responsibilities successfully. Then my

4. Career Reflection Essay
Olivia McCarthy Foundations for Learning September 9, 2010 Reflection Paper #1 Upon being
asked about my future, I have always been met with anxiety and fear of such unknown. Growing
up, as more and more of my peers developed their specific interests and even revealed desired career
choices, I only felt lost in terms of what I wished to purse. I found that I was easily overwhelmed if I
allowed myself to read too deeply into the dreaded "what am I going to do with my life" question.
I have come to realize that it is much less anxiety provoking, however, if I view this matter on a
smaller scale. After all, I do have aspirations and goals that I strive to achieve on a short–term basis.
With regard to college, a top priority of mine...show more content...
As well as focusing on academics, I also believe that in the future I will expand my social
experiences. Familiarizing myself with diversity and broadening my horizons is in my opinion
important to act upon. For example, as I embark on the Study Abroad program here at Bryant
during my "Sophomore Year Experience" or as I travel after college, I see myself meeting new
and exciting people (whether from Spain, Europe, Australia, etc) who can educate me in how
their government is run, school systems are set up and overall what it's like to live in a place that
is so much different from my home. In turn, I will be able to do the same for them. Around the
end of my sophomore year, I see myself narrowing down a career choice. After taking many
different courses during previous years here at Bryant, I see that I finally figure out my purpose
and I am confident with my specific decision. As this realization hits, I see myself getting into and
working hard in graduate school in order to further my studies before entering the work force.
Upon choosing a career I see myself with a comfortable income, independent, in a very positive
disposition. After I am able to be financially stable and independent, I see myself meeting my future
life partner and settling down. I see this person as being not only my romantic partner, but also my
best friend and most reliable support system. Starting a healthy, comfortable family would

However, based on all of the stages been discussed earlier, people in the mid–forties to mid–fifties
are at a different stage in their career and life than people that is at age 25 or 45. A careerchange
after age 40 can be a tricky situation. In this stage, people will decide whether to continue along
the same track because it is comfortable familiar and secure or change into the other career since
there is an opportunity to pursue new personal or professional goals. This stage is called as middle
career years or mid–career change. According to OUM textbook, mid–career means re–appraise
early career and early adulthood, reaffirm or modify goals, make choices appropriate to middle adult
years and remain productive. Mid–career is a time in which one is more likely to consider leaving a
current job in order to take work in an organization that might indicate promise of greater career
fulfillment or address a need for increased salary or benefits, intrinsic and extrinsic (WordWeb).
After 40, many people begin to look at life differently which they often begin to feel that life really
is too short to be stuck in a dead–end or unsatisfying job. In this middle age situation, it is a time in
which adults take on new responsibilities at the workplace and therefore, people of this age often
feel a need to reappraise previous life structures with an

6. Career Research Essay
"I feel sorry for the person who can't get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never
be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile" (Walter Chrysler). Deciding on what
one wants to be in life can prove to be a demanding task. There are so many, yet limited, different
opportunities in the world to have an excellent career and make a decent living while doing
something one loves. It is limited because there are only a few specific career paths that someone
could take to make good money. It is very difficult to make a fulfilling living being a garbage man.
There are many different opportunities because, within these specific careers, there are usually
various paths to take. Someone who has dreams to be a...show more content...
I am also interested in both design and math and as I was researching a job that incorporated these
two skills I came across civil engineering. Right now I have to decide which job path would be the
best one to take, counseling or civil engineering. Through the research shown below, I received an
overwhelming amount of information on every little detail of these jobs. Psychology "Few
fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology" (Sternburg 3). There are a
wide selection of specialties a person could go into with a bachelor's degree in psychology. In
graduate school, which is a must to attend, there is the option to explore the different specialities
or to go into the desired specialty without any research of the others. There are also many options
within a specific specialty. There is the option to be a teacher, to work for various organizations,
be a speaker, to have your own practice, and many others. In the psychology field these options
can all be combined. In fact it is expected of psychologists to do more activities involving their
specialty than solely sit in an office and listen to patients. There are two specialities that I am
interested in however, over the years, these specialties have become very similar. Clinical and
counseling psychology have evolved to become one in the same. Someone who specializes in
clinical psychology are more

Benedictine University. Upon graduating from CSUMB, I will be currently working for the
Dollar Tree Store, Inc. as a cashier. I hope that after the training workshop for assistant manager, I
will be accepted and train in the new Marina store at the end of the year. In the book What Color
is your Parachute, I learned that I could go into a kind of rejection shock, if a promotion in not in
the cards.[2] As he puts it, I would have to keep going and stay motivated, because I want full
exposure of the knowledge and operations at the Dollar Tree. I am achieving most of this by
interning this semester. Tammi Huntsman is the manager there and I am shadowing her as she
performs skills of managing. I have ordered inventory, payroll, reset the store a few times, and
cashed out cashiers with her help. All skills I have acquired will help me down the line in
managerial positions.
