Student Teacher: who gets the training of a teacher.
Skill: ability to do something with expertness.
Teaching skills: is a set of teacher behaviors which
are especially effective in bringing about the
desired changes in pupils.
Feedback: means knowledge of results or is the
information supplied to the individual about
his/her performance.
Feedback devices : devices used to supply
information to the individual .
There are various feedback devices which are used
for the modification of teacher behaviour.
Commonly used Feedback devices are:
 Microteaching
 Simulated Social Skill Teaching (SSST)
• Micro teaching was originated in Stanford University in
1960s.
• In India Micro teaching was researched at Technical
Teachers Training Institute at Madras and Calcutta.
• After that it was researched at some national level
institutions like CASE(Centre of Advanced Study in
Education) Baroda and Indore University, Indore.
Microteaching is a teacher training concept that
can be applied at various pre-service and in-service
stages in the professional development of teachers.
It provide teachers with a practice setting for
instruction in which the normal complexities of the
classroom are reduced and in which the teacher
receives a great deal of feedback on his/her
performance.
 “Microteaching is a scaled down teaching
encounter in class size and time.” D.W. Allen
 ‘Microteaching is a system of controlled practice
that makes it possible to concentrate on specific
teaching behavior and to practise teaching under
controlled conditions’(Allen&Eve,1968).
 Passi & Lalita, Microteaching is a training
technique which requires student teachers to teach
a single concept using specified teaching skills to a
small number of pupils in a short duration of time.
Thus, microteaching is the teaching of a small unit
of content to a small group of students in a small
amount of time. It is a technique or device of
imparting training to the inexperienced or
experienced teachers for learning the art of
teaching by practicing specific teaching skills
through reducing the complexities of class
teaching in terms of size of the class, time and
content.
It involves three phases:
 Pre active phase or Knowledge Acquisition
phase(observe demonstration skill , analyze and
discuss demonstration).
 Inter active phase or Skill Acquisition phase(prepare
micro lesson , practice skill, evaluate performance).
 Post active phase or Transfer phase(transfer of skill
to actual teaching situation).
In view of these phases a standard procedure of micro
teaching involves following steps:
 Orientation lectures on microteaching
 Discussion of teaching skills
 Selection of a particular teaching skill
 Presentation of a model demonstration lesson
 Observation of the model lesson and criticism
 Preparation of micro lesson plan
 Creation of microteaching setting
 Practice of the skill
 Providing feedback
 Re planning
 Re teaching
 Providing re feedback
 Repetition of microteaching cycle
 Integration of teaching skills

Allen and his associates at the Stanford university has
identified 14 teaching skills :
 Set Induction ( Introducing the lesson)
 Stimulus variation
 Lecturing
 Silence and non verbal cues
 Reinforcing pupil participation
 Recognizing behavior
 Completing the communication
 Fluency in questioning
 Probing questions
 Divergent questions
 Higher order questions
 Illustrating and use of examples
 Planned repetition
 Closure
Passi and his associates (1976) have identified
following teaching skills :
 Writing Instructional objectives
 Introducing Lesson
 Using Blackboard
 Selecting Content
 Organizing Content
 Selecting Audio –Visual Aids
 Recognizing Attending Behavior
 Increasing Pupil Participation
 Silence and Non verbal Cues
 Fluency in Questioning
 Probing Questions
 Explaining
 Illustrating with Examples
 Reinforcement
 Remedial Measures
 Stimulus Variation
 Giving Assignments
 Evaluation
 Achieving Closure
 Effective feedback device
 Develop teaching efficiency
 Prepare effective teachers
 Develops confidence
 Supplement to the teacher education program
 Increases teachers teaching competencies
