1. Advanced Medicinal Chemistry
Topic :- Adrenergic & Cholinergic Drug

2. Adrenergic Nervous System
• Adrenergic nervous system is a group of
organs and nerves in which adrenaline and/or
noradrenaline are release as
neurotransmitters.
• Adrenergic nerve release neurotransmitter:
Noradrenaline, Adrenaline, Dopamine and
produce their effect.
3. Adrenergic Drug
• Drug that produce similar effect to those
produced by sympathetic nervous system thus
they are also called sympathomimetic drug.
• It may refer to something which is susceptible
to epinephrine or similar to substances, such
as biological receptor especially adrenergic
receptor.
• A great number of drugs available which can
affect adrenergic receptor e.g. Dopamine,
noradrenaline, adrenaline, isoprenaline etc.
10. Mechanism of action
• The action of adrenaline is receptor mediated.
• It produces both excitatory & inhibitory
effects.
• Excitatory effect due to stimulation of alpha
receptor except the intestine where it is
inhibitory.
• Inhibitory effect due to stimulation of beta
receptor except the heart where it is
excitatory.
16. Cholinergic Drug
• Often called parasympathomimetic drug, because
their action mimics the action of PSNS.
• Also called as cholinomimetic
• Stimulate parasympathetic nervous system in
same manner as dose acetylcholine.
• May stimulate cholinergic receptors directly or
slow acetylcholine metabolism at synapses( affect
the enzyme acetylcholinesterase)
• Cholinergic agonists are two types:-
Direct acting
Indirect acting
