5. His father was a senior officer (tribune) in the
Imperial Horse Guard, a unit of the Roman army
6. his father was transferred to Pavia in Italy, Martin accompanied him, and when he reached
adolescence was, in accordance with the recruiting laws enrolled in the Roman army.
7. At the age of ten, against the wishes of his parents, Martin
became a catechumen—a candidate for Christian baptism.
8. When Martin was 15, as the son of a veteran officer, he was required to
join a cavalry regiment himself and thus, around 334, was stationed
at Ambianensium civitas or Samarobriva in Gaul (modern Amiens, France).
9. At the city gate (Amiens)
he met a scantily dressed
beggar. He impulsively
cut his own military cloak
in half and shared it with
the unfortunate man.
That night he dreamed
of Jesus wearing the half-
cloak Martin had given
away and heard Jesus
say to the angels:
"Here is Martin, the
Roman soldier who
is not baptized;
he has clad me."
11. Just before a battle against
the Gauls at Worms in 336,
Martin determined that his
faith prohibited him from
fighting. "I am a soldier of
Christ," he reportedly stated,
"I cannot fight."
He was charged with
cowardice and jailed, but in
response to the charge, he
volunteered to go unarmed
to the front of the troops.
His superiors planned to
take him up on the offer,
but before they could do
so, the invaders sued for
peace, and the battle never
occurred. Martin then
was released from
military service.
12. He went to Tours,
where he became a
disciple of Hilary of
Poitiers, a chief
proponent of
Trinitarian
Christianity and
opponent of the
herretic Arianism
of the ruling
Visigothic nobility.
15. Martin decided to seek shelter from the Arians, on the
island then called Gallinaria, now Isola d'Albenga, in the
Tyrrhenian Sea, where he lived the solitary life of a hermit
16. When Hilary
returned to
his episcopal
see at
Portiers in
361, Martin
joined him.
Bishop
Hilario
ordained him
deacon and
priest.
17. Determined to lead a religious life, he settled in the nearby place of Ligugé,
where he built the first known monastery in Europe, remaining there for ten years,
At about three kilometers from this Potiers, he formed a community called Maius
Monasterium, better known as Marmoutier. About 80 disciples came together,
some of whom later became bishops
18. later this developed into the Benedictine Ligugé
Abbey, the first such establishment in Gaul.
19. The monastery
became a center
for the
evangelization
of the country
districts, and
Martin traveled
and preached
throughout
Western Gaul. -
For 25 years, he
traveled through
the regions of
Touraine,
Chartres, Paris,
Autun, Sens
and Vienne.
20. In 371 Martin was popularly acclaimed bishop of Tours, where he
impressed the Christians of that city by the enthusiasm with which he
had pagan temples, altars, sacred trees, and sculptures destroyed.
21. The First Council of Saragossa had condemned Priscillianism, and Priscillian
and his supporters had fled. When charges against the fugitives were then
brought before Emperor Magnus Maximus, Martin went to the imperial
court of Trier on an errand of mercy to remove the issue from the secular
jurisdiction of the emperor (in order to save Priscillian’s life).
22. At first, Maximus acceded to his entreaty. However, after Martin
had departed, he yielded to the solicitations of the Catholic Bishop
Ithacius and ordered Priscillian and his followers to be beheaded (385).
They thus became the first avowed Christians executed for heresy.
23. Deeply grieved, Martin at first refused to communicate with Ithacius.
However, when he went again to Trier a little later to ask pardon for two rebels,
Maximus would only promise it to him on condition that he would make his
peace with Ithacius. To save the lives of his clients, he consented to this
reconciliation, but afterward reproached himself bitterly for this act of weakness
24. After a last visit to Rome, Martin went to Candes, one of the religious
centers he had created in his diocese, when he became seriously ill.
He ordered them to him into the presbytery of the church.
25. Shortly before death he saw the evil spirit. "What do you want,
horrible beast? You will find nothing in me that's yours!"
With those words the aged saint breathed forth his soul and was
born into eternal life on November 11, 397, at the age of 81
27. His body, taken to Tours, was enclosed in a stone sarcophagus,
above which his successors, St. Britius and St. Perpetuus,
built first a simple chapel, and later a basilica (470).
28. Saint Martin's basilica, however, was destroyed by
fire on several occasions, and both it and the
monastery were sacked by Norman Vikings in 996,
29. St. Euphronius, Bishop of Autun and a friend of St. Perpetuus,
sent a marble cover for the tomb of St. Martin.
30. A larger basilica was constructed in 1014 which was burned
down in 1230, and was rebuilt on a still larger scale .
31. In 1453 the remains of Saint
Martin were transferred to a
magnificent new reliquary
offered by Charles VII of France
32. This sanctuary was the centre of great national pilgrimages
until 1562, the fatal year when the Huguenots sacked it.
33. The ill-fated collegiate church was restored by its canons -
The revolution of 1793 was to subject it to a last devastation.
It was entirely demolished with the exception of the two towers
34. 1860, skilfully
executed excavations
located the site of
St. Martin's tomb, of
which some fragments
were discovered.
These precious
remains are at
present sheltered in
a basilica built by
Mgr Meignan,
Archbishop of Tours.
36. Clovis, King of the Salian Franks, promised his Christian wife Clotilda that he would be
baptized if he was victorious over the Alemanni. He credited the intervention of Saint Martin
with his success, and with several following triumphs, including the defeat of Alaric II
37. Hungary - Since this saint was born within the limits of the former
province of Pannonia (now Hungary), when pagan Hungarians began to
Christianize at the end of the 9th century, the cult of Saint Martin began
to gain significance in this region. The first Christian king, Saint Stephen I
of Hungary (975-1038), sanctified the Abbey of Pannonhalma in honor of
Saint Martin, as it was believed that his birthplace it had been the
mountain where the religious convent was founded.
38. Martin Luther was named after Martin of Tours, as he was baptized on
November 11, 1483. Many Lutheran congregations are thus named
after Saint Martin, although Lutherans normally name congregations
after the evangelists and other saints who appear in the Bible
39. Saint Therese of
the Child Jesus
carried in her
breviary a picture
of Saint Martin
of Tours, which
reminded her of
the importance of
love for one's
neighbor.
40. On Saint Martin's Day (November 11), children in Flanders, the southern and north-western parts of
the Netherlands, the Catholic areas of Germany and Austria participate in paper lantern processions.
Often, a man dressed as Saint Martin rides on a horse in front of the procession. The children sing songs
about Saint Martin and about their lanterns. The food traditionally eaten on the day is goose. In recent
years, the lantern processions have become widespread, even in Protestant areas of Germany
.
41. Children walk through the streets
with lanterns made of colored
paper and candles inside,
in small groups and always
accompanied by one or more
adults and go from house to
house asking for sweets or fruit.
The children knock on
the doors of the houses
that have left a candle
outside and begin to sing
San Martín songs
(Sint-Maartenliedjes).
42. Netherlands
Patron of Utrecht
On November 11
of each year,
the Sint Maarten
(Saint Martin)
The church-cathedral
(Dom) of Utrecht
was built in honor
of Saint Martin
44. In 2005, the European Council
Approved the route of San Martín
of Tours, by different countries
Europeans linked to the saint
45. He is the patron
saint of many
important
Mexican cities
San Martín Texmelucan de Labastida
San Martín Totoltepec San Martín de las Pirámides
en el Estado de México
47. Peru-Patronage in Sechura - Patronage in
Sayla - Patronage in Reque, chiclayo In
homage to the patron saint of the district,
the men dance the Kamate, a combination
of the ancient warrior dance of the saylas,
a native population, with tunes and
choruses, accompanied by violin and harp.
49. According to legend, the humble Saint Martin was reluctant to become
bishop, and he hid in a stable filled with geese. However, the noise made
by the geese betrayed his location to the people who were looking for him.
To recall this people eat goose on his feast day.
50. His feast is celebrated on November 11, coinciding with
the slaughter of the pig in many regions of Spain, hence
the origin of the expression "Every pig gets its Saint Martin."
