French Roman Catholic Priest who
dedicated himself to serving the poor.
He founded hospitals, the
Congregation of the Daughters of
Charity and the Congregation of the
Mission (Lazarists or Vincentians)C.M.

Vincent
was
born
in
the
southern
French
town
of
Pouy,
now
known
as
Saint
Vincent
de
Paul
in
his
honour.
He
was
born
into
a
peasant
family,
the
third
child
in
a
family
of
four
sons
and
two
daughters.
His
father,
Jean
De
Paul
was
a
farmer.
Together
with
his
family,
he
helped
to
look
aAer
the
farm,
leading
animals
to
the
plains
and
forests
to
find
them
pasture.

his
studies
in
the
Faculty
of
Theology
at
the
University
of
Toulouse
He
was
ordained
a
priest
by
the
elderly
Bishop
de
Perigueux
To
make
a
living,
he
taught
HumaniGes
at
De
Buzet
School
during
his
studies
at

with
a
Bachelor
in
Theological
Studies
at
the
University
of
Toulouse
While
travelling
by
sea
from
Marseilles
to
Narbonne,
he
was
captured
by
pirates
and
was
carried
as
a
slave
to
Tunis,
Africa.
He

held

for
two
years

responsible

spiritual

the
galley
convicts
of

evangelize

the

The
CongregaIon

Mission

and

themselves

in

villages

Daughters

Charity

lives

sick

the
homes,
ministering

hospitals,
caring
for
prisoners,
orphans,

mentally

homeless
of

They
also
taught
catechism
to
rural
children
