2. Beekeeping is the process of tending to bees.
While beekeeping comes with many rewards,
beekeepers face several challenges.
3. One of the common challenges that beekeepers
face is getting access to flowery plants. Bees feed on
the nectar and pollen of flowery plants. So, it is
important to locate a bee hive where plants, such as
wildflowers, cultivated vegetable plots, grain or oil-
producing plants, or orchards, are in abundance.
The nectar in these plants provides the bees with
carbohydrates that can later develop into honey.
4. Another common challenge of beekeeping is the poisoning of the bees due to the
application of insecticides and pesticides to crops. Some insecticides are highly toxic
to bees and can continue to kill them even after several days of application. Farmers
can help by informing the beekeepers in advance before spraying insecticides. This
will help the beekeepers plan how to cover up the hives until the next morning or
completely move the bees away to about eight kilometers from the area to be
sprayed. The bees will not be returned to the area for highly toxic insecticides until
after three days.
5. The stings from bees are also a major challenge in
beekeeping. Bees can easily feel threatened,so they
always resort to stings as a defense. It is best always
to wear protective clothing when visiting the bee
hive.
