2. Introduction
An experienced economist, Philip H. Brown is a former associate professor of
economics and co-editor of China Economic Review. Outside of his work as an
economist, Philip H. Brown is a passionate fan of Major League Baseball's (MLB)
Washington Nationals.
The Nationals took an interesting route in naming Jeremy Hellickson to its five-man
pitching rotation for the 2018 season. The team released him on March 25 and
subsequently signed him to a minor league contract. The reason behind his release
was so that the Nationals could avoid paying him a retention bonus. Once ready, he's
expected to replace A.J. Cole as the team's fifth starter. A 30-year-old native of Des
Moines, Iowa, Hellickson was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the
fourth round of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft and won American League Rookie of
the Year with the team in 2011. He has since played for the Arizona Diamondbacks,
Philadelphia Phillies, and Baltimore Orioles.
Through 204 career games, Hellickson owns a win-loss record of 69-69 to go along
with a 4.12 earned run average and 834 strikeouts. He made his spring training debut
with the Nationals on March 23 and allowed three hits while striking out four batters
in four innings.
