Outside of his professional career as an economist, Philip H. Brown enjoys following his favorite Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Washington Nationals. The Nationals won its first-ever World Series in 2019 after defeating the Houston Astros 6-2 in the deciding game in the Best-of-7 series. The team overcame remarkable obstacles, including trailing in and winning five elimination games, throughout the season and into the playoffs. Players were due to receive their World Series rings during the team's first home game of the 2020 MLB season, but the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about questions as to when and if that will happen. MLB executives have discussed potentially starting the season in empty arenas without fans. However, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo confirmed in a recent interview that the team would wait until fans could be present at its stadium to hand out World Series rings and raise its championship banner. Rizzo called these actions "once-in-a-lifetime" and noted that fans played a big role in helping the team win the World Series and, thus, deserve to be included. The celebration may have to wait until a vaccine is produced, which could take until the start of the 2021 season.
