Social Development Strategies at Caliber Schools
1.
2. A nonprofit charter management organization
operating free, non-selective public charter schools
throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, Caliber
Schools strives to deliver a rigorous, personalized
learning experience that will equip students to pursue
and excel in higher education. While emphasizing
skills such as computational thinking and analysis,
Caliber also works to support students’ social and
emotional development. Its educators strive to impart
valuable concepts, including mindfulness,
perseverance, and conflict resolution, utilizing social
and emotional development strategies such as
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
and restorative justice.
3. Contrasting with techniques for individual
behavior management, PBIS plans facilitate
school-wide disciplinary standards via a
continuum of positive behavioral support.
Teachers and staff take a preventive
approach to behavior management, working
to create a healthy learning environment by
defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate
and desired student behaviors. PBIS
approaches often involve positive
reinforcement and include school-wide,
classroom, and individual behavioral support
strategies.
4. Caliber Schools also utilize principles of
restorative justice to support students’ social
and emotional development. As a theory of
justice focused on identifying and fixing the
harm caused by negative behavior,
restorative justice strategies can greatly aid
conflict resolution in schools. Restorative
justice strategies bring students together in
small peer-mediated groups to discuss
conflicts and work together to develop
solutions, simultaneously encouraging
teamwork and reinforcing positive
behavior.
