1. PDHPE RATIONALE
PDHPE stands for Personal
Development, Health and Physical education.
One of the aims of physical education in
Primary school for students is to allow them to
develop positive attitudes towards physical
activity and attain lifelong habits of
participation. The experiences children
encounter in school will have lifelong
significant impacts on their attitudes and
practices later on in life.

2. Encourages an understanding and
valuing of self and others
Students who understand and value themselves exercise
more control over their own lives, they’re able to identify and
express a range of feelings, they appreciate the notion that
what they think influences the way they feel, they are more
open to learning positive ways of responding to situations
therefore making considered choices
They work cooperatively in teams and value others, they are
more tolerant and caring to others in the community, they
respect and value difference in the community
They are better equipped to respond to change and
overcome adversity and more likely to seek help when
needed
PDHPE provides the opportunity for students to learn
positive attitudes about themselves and others, to
communicate effectively, to work cooperatively and to
develop and maintain positive relationships
3. Promotes physical activity
Encourages the physical growth and
development of all children, supports the
acquisition of movement skills and nurtures
positive attitudes towards physical activity
Provides regular and frequent opportunities for
students to apply movement skills, enhance
creativity and aesthetic awareness and
develop positive attitudes towards regular
physical activity
4. Emphasises informed decision making
leading to effective and responsible
action
Students learn to be responsible for their own
lifestyle, they make informed decisions about
factors that may hinder or promote the
wellbeing of themselves and others
Makes children aware that there are choices in
their decision making process so they can
predict likely consequences such as the
refusal skills in drug situations need to be part
of the repertoire of students responses well
before ahead of the time they are exposed to
drugs
5. AIMS OF PDHPE:
There are five essential skills students should
develop from PDHPE:
Decision making
Interacting
Problem solving
Moving
Communicating
