This document discusses how dietary imbalances and deficiencies can negatively impact health and sporting performance. It focuses on three specific issues: anorexia, obesity, and malnutrition. Students are tasked with researching how each condition affects daily life and sporting abilities like strength, stamina, and injury risk. Maintaining the proper diet is important for fueling the body with needed energy for exercise and competition.
1. GCSE PE Diet Name…………………………………………………
Dietary imbalances or deficiencies
If we fail to supply our bodies with the correct balance and amount of foods from the
five essential food groups then we run the risk of experiencing a variety of health
problems. If we take part in sport and play at a competitive level then our
performances can be significantly reduced as a result of a poor diet.
This worksheet will help you learn about three very important dietary imbalances and
will encourage you to understand how they can impact on our day-to-day lives and
sporting performance.
Task 1
Research the following dietary imbalances or disorders and find out how they can
affect our day-to-day lives:
Eating disorder/dietary Definition Affect on day-to-day life
problem
Anorexia
Obesity
Malnutrition
Task 2
When we play sport we require our bodies to be strong, fast, supple and to be able to
carry out exercise for long periods of time. The food we eat helps us to achieve this
and in particular, fuels our body with the right amount of energy we require. Each
sporting activity requires a different amount of energy but crucially, without this
energy we simply cannot perform at the right level.
Using the key words below, write a sentence on how each dietary problem can affect
sporting performance.
Speed / strength / suppleness / stamina / agility / power / reaction time/ co- ordination
/ balance / injury / recovery time
