The Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the School of Education and the National Association of Independent Schools and Non-maintained Special Schools aims to develop an e-learning training resource on identifying and addressing mental health concerns in children with complex special educational needs. The resource is intended to promote staff confidence, provide tools to systematically observe and record concerns, and guidance on referring concerns within and outside of schools. This KTP arose from previous research which identified that school staff found it difficult to distinguish behaviors related to special needs from those indicating potential mental health issues. The training resource currently under development will help address this issue and be launched at the NASS annual conference in October 2012.
