17. New Technology – Hosting / TV
Mynewsdesk.com – April 10, 2017
Set Top Box
Set Top Box market is expected to reach $24.3 billion by 2022. The market for set top box is driven by
increasing demand for High Definition (HD) channels, digitization of TV broadcasting, government
regulations, technological advancements in television, and increasing demand for higher picture quality.
Furthermore, better quality of signal transmission, introduction of pause and play facility, live streaming by
internet users, smart phones and tablets are the add ups for the market growth. High initial costs and
package costs of pay channels are limiting the market growth.

DirectTV and Android Boxes
AT&T's DirecTV is getting ready to embrace internet-based content delivery beyond its
DirecTV Now service: The company is about to introduce a new TV set-top box
that's based on Google's Android TV platform and ditches satellite connectivity for
over-the-top streaming, according to a new FCC filing. The new device, which goes by
the model number C71KW-400, is being described by these documents as "the new
AT&T/DirecTV Wireless 4K OTT Client." A user manual published as part of the filings
specifies that the device won't be able to interact with any of DirecTV's existing Genie
hardware, and hints at a future hardware product called HS27. Helpfully, the manual
also supplies a definition of OTT as "the delivery of video via the internet directly into
user-connected devices, allowing access to services anywhere, anytime, on any
device." The manual also reveals that the set-top will shop with a voice remote with
integrated touch pad, and photos show that it has Ethernet, digital audio, HDMI and
USB ports, but no antenna connectivity -- meaning that any and all programming will
indeed come over the internet.

Startups – TV Application
You.i TV, which started out life as You.i.Labs back in 2008, announced Monday that it had secured
$15 million in funding from Kayne Partners, a Los Angeles venture capitalist that manages more
than $27 billion worth of assets. The money will help the Ottawa firm to market its products, fine
tune some design and hire more staff over the next year.
Thanks to the booming interest in applications to stream TV services, like Netflix, You.i has
expanded from 50 people in 2014 to more than 150 today. It plans to hit 200 employees by June
2016.
The company is behind the apps for Treehouse GO, and the new online Shomi TV service from
Rogers Communications, Sony Corp.’s Crackle application on Roku branded streaming TV boxes
and a host of others that it can’t talk about due to client confidentiality agreements.
“This is a unique moment in the evolution of television,” said Jason Flick, co-founder and chief
executive of You.i TV. “Even Apple agrees, saying … last week that ‘the future of TV is apps.’
Our You.i Engine is the missing ingredient broadcasters need to launch truly immersive
applications on every screen.”
