8. If there’s one thing that stands out in court documents outlining the RCMP’s case against
Vice-Admiral Mark Norman, it’s the extremely cutthroat nature of military procurement.
It’s a secret world in which companies and high-priced lobbyists go to great lengths to
win whatever multibillion-dollar contract is up for grabs.
That includes bringing pressure to bear on federal ministers and other government
officials and trying to undermine competitors—and even the procurement system itself—
through whatever means necessary.
“Industry is always going to do whatever they can to win a contract,” says Alan Williams,
former head of military procurement at National Defence.

Executives in the AlixPartners survey also indicate that it is becoming
tougher for their companies to steer clear of potential corruption. About
two-thirds (67%) of respondents believe there are some geographies where
it is impossible to avoid corrupt business practices: Russia (35% of
respondents), the continent of Africa (33%), and China (27%) top the list. In
Russia and Africa in particular, CFOs shouldn’t expect the situation to
change anytime soon: Africa has the worst anticorruption laws, according
to 81% of respondents, followed closely by Russia (73% of respondents).

Richard Levick – Forbes – May 16, 2017
Proponents of the FCPA point to its success in promoting American values
around the world, in cracking down on bribery and fraudulent scheming, and in
making international business deliberations more predictable and forthright. It
has also generated significant funds for the U.S. Treasury: in 2016 alone, the
government collected more than $2.4 billion in penalties from some two dozen
companies charged with FCPA violations.
13. WORLD BANK / CORRUPTION
http://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/governance/brief/anti-corruption
The World Bank Group considers corruption a major challenge to its twin goals
of ending extreme poverty by 2030 and boosting shared prosperity for the
poorest 40 percent of people in developing countries. In addition, reducing
corruption is at the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals and achieving
the ambitious targets set for Financing for Development. It is a priority for the
World Bank Group and many of its partners.
Businesses and individuals pay an estimated $1.5 trillion in bribes each year. This
is about 2% of global GDP—and 10 times the value of overseas development
assistance. The harm that corruption causes to development is, in fact, a
multiple of the estimated volume, given the negative impact of corruption on
the poor and on economic growth.
