The Pros and Cons of Technology Essay
The Pros and Cons of Technology
As far back as I can remember my family and I have taken advantage of technology. The types of
technology have changed over the years, along with our usage and dependence on it. Technology is
a fundamental part of our lifestyle, including both work and play. What is interesting is that we also
have many friends who use very little technology in their day–to–day living. This drastic difference
makes one wonder how necessary the technology really is, and whether or not our dependence on it
is healthy in the long run. It is really easy to just get caught up in using technology without thinking
about the pros and cons.
I was born in the 80's, so technology as, I know it, was beginning to take aim at the ... Show more

The games were focused on boys and were designed by men. The limited software made specifically
for girls contained no problem–solving or strategy except possible the choice of what to wear. My
mother purposely made my sister use technology and computers to become interested in a field that
at the time was dominated by men. So, basically I had to learn computing on my own. Video games
were a huge interest of mine and still are. I can remember the day my best friend snuck over with
the latest in animated violence, "Mortal Combat". Let me tell you, once my mother witnessed my
"virtual decapitation" of my friend in quite a gruesome manner, we weren't allowed to touch the
television for a week.
I started middle school when we moved to Rochester Hill's from Ann Arbor. Our new blended
family (my mother remarried) had several computers and other new technological devices, as did
most of the homes in the affluent community in which we lived. Home pc's became a useful tool in
middle school; I surfed the net, wrote papers, and researched articles over the Internet. My whole
family became engulfed with the technology wave. Our extended family and close friends
eventually all came to a point where they used some sort of pc or computing device in their
everyday lives. Computers made it easy to communicate, and because our family and relatives lived
a good distance apart we were able to effectively chat and email our way out of "snail mail."

Advantages Of CAD Software
Introduction
What is CAD software?
CAD, or computer–aided design and drafting (CADD), is the use of computer technology for design
and design documentation. CAD software replaces manual drafting with an automated process.
CAD, or computer–aided design and drafting (CADD), is the use of computer technology for design
drafting and also helpful in drawing different CNC's designs. CAD software replaces manual
drafting with an automated process. As we work in the architecture, MEP, or structural engineering
fields, we have probably used 2D or 3D CAD programs.
CAD (computer–aided design) software is used by architects, engineers, drafters, artists, and others
to create precision drawings or technical illustrations. CAD software can be used to create two–

Analysis with the help of SolidWorks Software:
As we know that there is a process of testing in each and every single model and product. From this
software we are able to analyses each and every aspects of our model and also able to find the
failure point which will occur on the final product after the manufacturing.
SolidWorks widely used for the estimation of cost and calculations of bill of materials. It is very vast
software used in field of production. It has so many applications while it is a very vast and user
friendly software and the editing feature in this software allow to edit some feature while the

Choosing the right timber is important depending on the application in which you intend to use the
material.
Trees grow all over the world and their location very much depends on the environmental factors in
play. Some trees like warm dry environments, whilst others thrive in cold and wet locations.
How they are cut into usable sections and how they have been stored and processed can dramatically
change their properties. The material can be cut by 'Through and Through ' sawing. This process is
the cheapest, but the way the grain is cut means that you get a lower quality timber that is more
difficult to use as it is prone to warping.
The second and more expensive way to cut material is by 'Quarter ' sawing. This process gives the
best possible cut, but greatly reduces the size of the pieces taken from a tree. The material is less
prone to misshaping, yet due to the nature of the process is more expensive.
Metal:
Ferrous: contain iron; with iron as the odd one out, all the rest have the word 'Steel ' in them. For
instance – stainless steel, mild steel and high carbon steel.
Non–Ferrous: do not contain iron, good examples of Non– Ferrous metals are aluminium, copper,
brass, tin and zinc
Alloys: most metals are mixed with other metals to improve their properties.
Metals are rarely used in their pure form, but mixing different metals together you can achieve the
perfect material for

Statement Of Sop In Computer Science
Statement of Purpose
'Learning is like a ripple in the waters of an endless ocean'. This is one of my favourite percepts and
for the past few decades, man has been advancing into the unknown realms of technology and
science. This advancement is to make life comfortable for humans at home and at work and I would
like to be an essential part of such enhancement. To accomplish this imposing task. I am aware that
besides my strong dedication and hard work, an eminent background in Computer Science is
required. Therefore, I have decided to pursue masters in Computer Science, which will lead me to a
career of teaching and research.
I am very earnest towards assimilating knowledge to the greatest amplitude. Effective teaching and
proper guidance throughout schooling helped me to build a strong foundation. I was fascinated by
the way things work, from dismantling and maintaining my own toys to modeling a dam as a part of
science exhibition; my curiosity was focused at unraveling the function of devices. I have decided
way long back to be a Mechanical Engineer which was a logical career choice. ... Show more

The career of being a Fashion Designer ?
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a fashion designer? Hopefully this will help
you. The question is what exactly is a fashion designer. " A Fashion designer is one who creates or
adapts original designs for clothing for men , women , and children. Most specialize in one
particular type of clothing , such as women , dresses or men's suits , or in accessories such as
handbags , hats , or jewelry.'' A fashion designer job is very competitive , since you have other
designers who specialize in the same thing as you. What makes a fashion designer important? A
fashion designer is a great need in the world. We as humans need clothes for every type of weather
and occasion. Also clothes are made to express people personality. Clothes are made so that we can
be who we are and look stylish at the same time. That the fashion designer job is to make the clothes
unique and to hopefully fit someone personality besides theirs. A fashion designer job is to create.
Since the fashion world is so widespread it is hard for a fashion designer to be unique. They always
have to keep up with

Health And Safety Requirements For Computer Aided Drafting...
LO 1.1 Health & Safety Requirements for Computer–Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) Users.
The current requirements for health and safety for CADD users who use Visual Display Units
(VDUs) for their work, is specified by the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment)
Regulations 1992. In this section of the assignment, I will identify some of the most common health
and safety concerns and specify the steps that employers and employees need to follow in order to
comply with the law and to work safely, including guidelines for workstations, work environment
and other equipment. Physiological Factors Affecting CADD Users VDUs is a term which
encompasses monitors, display screen equipment (DSEs) iPads etc; any screen (usually forming part
of a computer) that displays text, numerical data, or graphics. VDUs have been accused of causing a
whole range of health problems, but in general these health issues arise as a result of VDUs being
used incorrectly rather than the VDUs themselves. One of the most commonly reported health issues
relating to VDU usage is repetitive strain injury (RSI) however the cause is usually a more
generalised group of disorders known as 'upper limb disorders'. (Health and Safety Executive, 2011)
Many of the disorders affecting the upper body are exacerbated by stress that can be mitigated by
making some simple changes to the work environment. Firstly, ensuring that employees have
undertaken the correct training in how to use hardware, software and

The Glass Cage By Nicholas Carr
Essay #1: The Glass Cage We live in the age of constant technological innovation and endless
information; in which we are so connected and dependent on the technology we use that we
sometimes don't even realize how much we're relying on it. In The Glass Cage by Nicholas Carr,
Carr defines automation as, "the use of computers and software to do things we used to do
ourselves," and argues that there are daunting consequences to our reliance on technology (Carr 1).
In his book, Nicholas Carr sets up three arguments related to automation, tacit knowledge, and the
idea of work. His main arguments throughout the novel are that humans are overestimating the
benefits of automation, losing tacit knowledge through our reliance on technology, and ... Show

Again, he argues that instead of automation replacing the work we had before, technology is actually
changing the way we work. This leads into the final point Carr makes in chapter one that automation
is changing society's perception of work and leisure. Many people would agree that work is not
pleasurable and humans like leisure. However, Carr argues that, "thanks to our bias for leisure over
work, ease over effort, we overestimate automation's benefits" (19). Not only does he argue at the
end of the chapter that most people are searching for a blend of life and work, but also he argues that
people actually enjoy work over leisure because of the sense of accomplishment and productivity
they feel afterwards. Carr argues that we overestimate the benefits of technology, when it may not
even be what we really want as human beings. Furthermore, the his skeptical beliefs regarding
automation, tacit knowledge, and work versus leisure are central to his argument throughout this
entire book. Are humans facing the degeneration effect due to our reliance on technology? Carr
would argue in chapter four that yes, we are losing creativity and knowledge of work because we are
not actively using our memory and cognition. When humans typically learn a new skill, the
generation effect

Archicad Essay
AutoCAD vs. ArchiCAD in Architecture Architectural design today has moved from designing by
hand to designing with several different software programs that have made the job much easier. Two
of the main programs in many architectural firms today are AutoCAD2000 and ArchiCAD 6.5. Both
are very productive design tools but each has its own defects in certain areas of the design process.
Design processes today have been reversed from designing from the inside to the outside, to
designing from the outside to the inside. Most designing today is based on the actual structural
appearance one will perceive from the exterior, rather than the functional use of the interior;
although both are taken into consideration. AutoCAD is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

One only produces a plan drawing when one has resolved the elevations and layouts. A plan really
needs to grow out of the functional and aesthetic requirements of a project. Yet ArchiCAD
constrains one to work in plan from the start; from this the other views are created. This is great for
documentation but very constraining for the design process. AutoCAD bypasses this problem better
by showing a simultaneous plan, multiple elevations and sections, and of most importance, make the
editing tools available in all views. For example, a parapet wall can be created by shaping the wall
in an elevational view, where as in ArchiCAD, one can either create it as a shaped library object to
be inserted where required or construct a false roof of the right height and pitch to which the wall
can be trimmed. This demonstrates that AutoCAD is easier to use in this aspect. The current sections
and elevations in AutoCAD are only usable to trace over because they are missing a proper layer
structure and the possibility to be edited while still linked to the model. For instance, one should be
able to add the windowsills on the elevations, even if they do not appear in the three–dimensional
mode. Or one should be able to compositionally crosshatch an elevation and have the hatch adjusted
if the model is changed. One should also be able to add things such as dimensions and annotations
without having to add them in paper space, have

Careers of Design: Interior and Fashion Essay
Billions of working adults hold positions in order to maintain a source of income for themselves and
their families. These adults can fit their jobs into certain categories, such as medical, legal, or labor,
and yet there are still many professions that fit into a different type of category: Fine Arts. Fine Arts
is an unique category in which two special occupations fall into: a fashion designer and an interior
designer.
Fine Arts is a unique category that some adults' jobs fit into. Fine Arts employs a majority of people
who are artistic and are creative. However, not all the employed enjoy the Arts; some of the careers
are simplistic and simply follow orders of a creative boss. These jobs do not simply create

Yet, these subdivisions can be divided further, into particular careers.
Within the category of Fine Arts, there are many subdivisions, and these subdivisions are divided
into many careers. Included in the food subcategory are many careers such as a gourmet chef or a
caterer. Also in the photography division there are different types of photo/videographers, like a
news cameraman, or a magazine photographer. Another example of a division of a section is an
interior designer, which is a partition of the subcategory building. Following this trend of division is
a fashion designer, which falls into the subcategory of fashion. Within the main category of Fine
Arts, there are many subdivisions and careers that fall within, and one particularly interesting career
happens to be a fashion designer.
One principally creative profession in the Fine Arts category is a fashion designer. A fashion
designer's job is to "conceptualize and create new clothing and accessory designs" (Fashions, n.d.).
However, a fashion designer's work is not simple, they must stay up–to–date with the latest trends,
color palettes, and design clothing the intended wearer would definitely want to purchase and wear.
Fashion Designers must excel in a variety of skills in order to be productive and competitive.
Essential skills include sewing, tailoring, pattern making, fashion history, and knowledge

The Bim Capabilities And Bim Maturity Level
Project: To assess the BIM capabilities and BIM Maturity Level. Having established exiting BIM
maturity level, propose measures for achieving level 2 BIM by 2016.
According to the Government Construction Strategy document in 2011, the "Government will
require fully collaborative Level 2 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation
and data being electronic) as a mini¬¬¬¬¬mum by 2016."
For the three weeks I am working at the London Bridge office of Jacob's, I intend to:
Understand exactly what BIM is and the basic criteria for each BIM level.
Evaluate where Jacob's is in relation to these BIM levels.
Suggest improvements as to how Jacob's can reach the Government's target by 2016.
The use of level 2 BIM in all public sector construction work is imperative as it affects everybody
on a day to day basis. Using BIM software will not only reduce the amount of time spent at the
construction site, but it will also reduce costs due to errors. One of the current projects Jacob's is
working on using BIM software is the Crossrail (Europe's largest construction project). This will
"increase London 's rail capacity by 10 per cent and bring 1.5 million new commuters", not to
mention bringing an estimated 42 billion to the UK economy and creating 30,000 jobs. Due to the
use of some aspects of BIM, the process of creating the Crossrail will not only be faster and more
efficient but will also help the UK's economy.

Overview Of Engineering In Me-37100: Computer Aided Design...
I have spent a semester learning about engineering in ME–37100: Computer–Aided Design course.
As part of a class assignment, I read three articles discussing the role of independent judgment in
engineering. The articles I referred to are: "A Question of Credibility," by Jack Thornton, "The
Mathematical of Structural Engineers," by Julie Gainsburg and "How Engineers Lose Touch" by
Eugene Ferguson. The purpose of this paper is to relate the descriptions in these articles with my
experiences in the course as well as my expectations in a career as engineer. The articles mentioned

The only way to set the problem correctly is to actually understand what the problem is. I had to
analyze a pulley for an assignment in this course and in order to set the problem properly I had to
look at an actual pulley. In order to conduct a good FEA I need to have a good grasp of the real
world. Ferguson's article mentioned this: "Students took field trips to power plants, steel mills,
heavy machine shops, automobile assembly plants, and chemical works, where company engineers
with operating experience helped them grasp the subtleties of the real world of engineering."
(Ferguson 1993). I have never set foot in an factory or a company as a student engineer but I was
fortunate enough during this course to have a professor that bring actual objects to the classroom
and help us set up experiment in order to better understand the physics of a problem. According to
Ferguson, a lot of engineers are disconnected from the real world and lack good judgment. In ME–

simulation and Ferguson's article is all about good judgment. As an engineer, it is imperative to
exercise good judgment because people's life and money are at stake. After the collapse of the

Advantages Of Cad Design
COMPUTER–AIDED DESIGN: Computer–Aided Design (CAD) is a direct development of the
traditional drafting board approach to ship design. CAD depicts geometry and dimensions on a
computer monitor and not directly on paper, though an important output of CAD is still paper
drawings. Sophisticated CAD systems are much more powerful than computer versions of drafting
boards. CAD is most appropriate for relatively simple designs such as those developed in the
smaller shipyards. For more complex designs, CAE and product model programs are more
appropriate. CAD systems have many capabilities, running from 2D line drawings to 3D solid
geometry. Some of the capabilities are listed below Hull design: Hull design may include the
development of hull geometry, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moment of inertia and section modulus are some examples. CAD may also be used to calculate tank
areas and volumes, weight distribution diagrams for loading, and hydrostatics and stability data. The
early stage design can be done using a CAD software, and many such designing software programs
are available. AutoCAD, Autoship, Pro/Engineer, FastShip, MaxSurf are some of the software
generally used. Excel a general purpose spreadsheet program is applicable to many ship design
calculations. COMPUTER–AIDED ENGINEERING: Computer–Aided Engineering (CAE)
automates various ship design calculations in the areas of hull and equipment. While the more
typical CAE programs specialize in specific areas, such as ship structure, some are modules of more
integrated ship design programs and these form a basis to represent a link to product model
programs. In a class by itself are computer programs for the initial design and cost estimation. These
programs are usually parametric, and produce their technical and cost estimates based on historical

KBE is a system or process which collects and stores and organizes this knowledge and makes it
available in the reusable form by providing computational support to the design process.
The need of KBE arouse due to problems in current knowledge structure, which is disorganized.
Existing databases, designs, thumb rules, etc. are not maintained in order, which makes the
reusability difficult. Current knowledge structure is not secure also, as the databases that are not
prepared centrally are susceptible to changes by other designers and loose reliability. Capturing
knowledge is essential, but capturing the knowledge that is not necessary would lead to confusion
and decrease effective reusability. KBE systems solve all the problems which are indicated above.
KBE allows designers to devote more time and effort in creative and the innovative work and makes
design process simpler. KBE system automatically extracts the given necessary knowledge from
every stage of design cycle, and makes this knowledge available for remaining design cycles. KBE
system allows capturing and organization of knowledge in an efficient manner. With the application

The Opera Speculative Design Project
In this document I will evaluate, articulate and communicate my process and accomplishments
within the Opera speculative design project. This document will provide context for my designs and
practical work evidenced in my journal and blog. In this project I will explore Juxtaposing themes,
musical and dramatic styles and characters through research, planning and execution.
We will also construct a set on one of two operas "L'Enfant et les Sortileges" by Maurice Ravel or
"Lulu" by Alban Berg. The aims of the speculative project are to create a "stand alone" design that
will fit in NO 1 touring theatres that takes account of the orchestra pit and a one day fit up and six–
hour strike.

After developing themes such as identity and animal behaviour we incorporated those ideas into
manikins which would then be presented as a potential puppet idea. Once we had a better
understanding of the operas we then selected which opera we would like to do, and what project we
would like to design on. I chose to do "Lulu" By Alban Berg as a speculative design as it was the
play I understood the most, I also wanted to develop my process and craftsmanship skills.
After researching the play, I created a scene summery and a character list to refer to while designing.
I also created a storyboard of scenes of significance which gave me an idea of who was at the
location and what was going on. I then started to develop my characters starting with a group
drawing, front, back and side drawings and Photoshop final images.
Once I had a clear image of my characters I then started to experiment within my model box for
inspiration. Once I had a few ideas I then produced some rough sketches, resulting in a final
drawing. I then produced my set on auto cad so I had a good idea of scale and measurements
resulting in a final orthographic, side elevation and cutting list. After I had my measurements and
rough drawings I then drew out the theatre royal in sketch–up and did a scene by scene breakdown
of the opera. With this visual aid I then started my set construction.

A Career in Computer Aided Drafting Essay
According to Lucy Friend, "Computer Aided Drafters make $79,000 a year on average."(n.d.).
Computer Aided Drafting unlocks the door to numerous opportunities for employment; I selected
Computer Aided Drafting because it's so extraordinary with AutoCAD, because of the uses of
Computer Aided Drafting, History of CAD, education requirements, and immeasurable career
opportunities that are obtainable. First off, CAD is computer technology that has contributed in
design and drafting of a portion or an artifact and frequently a complete structure as well. Computer
aided drafting software is identified as CAD. It is fascinating and intriguing software because we

The prehistoric technique of undertaking drafting application was on paper with a pencil and it
required an extensive amount of time. They used a drafting table with rulers and templates to draw
the most detailed view they could. Technology in Computer Aided Design applications has
transformed and evolved to have numerous applications. For example; my dad used CAD in
construction and remodeling. Remodeling kitchens and bathrooms with CAD was an enormous
necessity because the customer received an enhanced 3–D detailed view. They also use CAD for
architectural structures, roads, aircraft, ships, cars, digital cameras, TVs, aerospace, clothes, custom
choppers, mobile phones, and even for landscaping. While history of CAD starts out with a
mathematician called Euclid from Alexandria in 350 B.C. CAD groundwork is established on
geometry with postulates and axioms. Drafting took abundant of hours to draw and if we made a
miscalculation we would have to start all over. Next Sketchpad was invented in the 1960s by Ivan
Sutherland. Sketchpad was predominantly ground–breaking CAD software because the architect
interacted with the computer graphically by manipulating a light pen to sketch on the computers
screen. New CAD technology called Sketchpad did procedures that can be accomplished in less than
millionth of a second instead of hours. No fundamental CAD software integrated such
straightforwardness into its user interface. Sketchpad was the preliminary CAD

The Theory Of Computational Design Thinking

Computational Design Thinking
The dominance of computational programs in the architectural career has become dominant
throughout the years. It could be said that it has taken over the entire practice and that the human
aspect had been taken out completely. In the book Computational Design Thinking, by Achim
Menges and Sean Ahlquist this is discussed. It is important to understand how certain things work in
an environment in other to comprehend how a design computer system actually works. In order to
do so, a system generating a system, history and cybernetics, and how the machine and men interact
needs to be analyzed. In doing so, it is determined that one cannot exist without the other.
A system generating a systems dominates the idea of computational design. A system has to ideas
explained in the book. The first idea is a system as a whole. The system as a whole refers to a
particular holistic view of a single thing. While a generating system does not refer to a single thing;
but a combination of things that include rules that are capable of generating many things. A system
can only become a system if it has a holistic property. Meaning that if the object could have different
meaning depending the approach. For example a flower; when given as a gift it is just a flower. It is
not thought of as a system it is just an object to the receiver. If the same flower is looked about in a
different way it

I Want to Become an Architect
Ever since I was young, I have admired intricate buildings and structures. I have always appreciated
a nice, well thought out home because I do believe home is where the heart is. I have done lots of
research on architecture, and what it takes to become an architect. I am naturally drawn to this
career because it requires lots of creativity and an eye for design. Being an architect also allows you
to interact with people, which is important to me because I am a social person. It also is a steady job
and brings in a good salary.
Through research, I have learned what exactly architects do before starting projects, and while
working on projects. A usual day for an architect usually consists in two settings: the office, or
sometimes the construction site where their idea is put to life. Usually in the office, they are meeting
with clients, preparing project specifications, and completing requirements and objectives for
upcoming projects. They also have to know how to manage construction contracts and create scaled
drawings by hand however, preparing drawings by computer design technology is more common
these days with new advanced, efficient computer programs. The typical day in the office for an
architect sounds nothing but ideal for me. One in five architects is self–employed, which is a
significant number of self–employed architects, and architects held 107,400 jobs in 2012. It would
be ideal for me to be self–employed in my future because I like to be the boss and I am very

Bmw Case Study Analysis
Executive Summary
BMW has embarked on a mission to cut its notoriously long product development time in half
utilizing a newly developed system code named "Digital Car". Senior management has decided to
utilize the new process on the 7–series platform. In order to accomplish this goal, BMW is preparing
to take advantage of the latest computer technology in car development. At the forefront of the new
plan is a debate over the use of computer–aided–styling (CAS). We recommend that BMW
implement the Computer Aided Styling system and processes into their production development
program.
Key Areas of Concern
The main business problem that BMW is facing is reducing its long product development time.
BMW's current design process began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
BMW's strategy for value creation lies in its meticulous engineering, including design and styling.
BMW designers pride themselves in delivering the unique styling that BMW is known for. They
strive for designs that generate emotions – "Works of art". This is evident in the fact that many of
the designers came from art or industrial design schools. The current design process involves two
full size clay models – which are extremely costly and time consuming. However, the use of clay
models provides a visual representation of the final product that many felt irreplaceable. By being
able to physically see and touch a model of the final product the model can be handcrafted to make
the slightest details apparent. Once the models are complete they are captured digitally by a laser
scanner and brought into a Computer Aided Design (CAD) System.
The current process is working well to deliver the unique styling and quality that defines BMW,
however, it is very time consuming and a major roadblock to reducing the product development
time. Senior management utilized the functional managers from the five key process areas that
accounted for about 90% of the critical processes involved in product development. These managers
identified three main changes to the current system that needed to take place in order to meet the
development time reduction goals: Increased parallelization of design tasks, elimination of some
design iterations, and quicker completion of the

Dental Hygienist Experience Essay
It would be early on Saturday morning in which I roll out of bed to prepare for my internship at Dr.
Henkel's place, Horsham Dental Elements. Dr. Henkel acquired the dental center in 1990 after
moving the suburbs in Horsham. Many patients would come to this dental clinic, sitting in the
waiting lounge as they wait for their name to be announced. Each patient would be directed to the
assigned room from the dental specialist (Dr. Henkel Interview).
During the procedures for dental hygiene the dental hygienist would often comment on the patient
and their overall health of their teeth. "Gums look much less swollen. I barely see any plaque?"
Other times they remark, "Are you flossing more regularly?" Once the polishing and cleaning was
complete the dental hygienist would then mention "Wait here, he will be here in just a moment."
Who was coming? It was the inspector, Dr. Henkel. The man was as round as a globe. He would
dress in his usual green collared shirt, as he waddled down the hallway with his thudding gait.
Immediately, once entering the room, he would greet his patients with his warm welcoming smile.
In addition, he would sit in his swivel chair, cover his mouth with his surgical mask and then put his
dental glasses to carefully examine the x–ray screens. In other words, he was now ready to get ...

The Impact Of Using Computer Aided Architectural Design
3.0 Research methodology
The aim to investigate the impact of using Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) software
on students' creativity, this section going to presents the adopted research design, criteria of
sampling, data collection methods, and the data analysis methods.
3.1 Research design
Since the relationship of CAAD and creativity represents a complex as reviews in literature, a
combination method between case study and qualitative method approach is consider appropriate. A
case study will be utilized to assess students' creativity within a design studio setting between
students that use conventional method and students that use CAAD software. Qualitative study will
be employed to explore experience of architectural instructors and students about the utilization of
CAAD software.
3.2 Sample selection criteria
This Research will be carrying out on the third year students at the department of architecture at
university of Khartoum. Research involving sixty students as research samples, thirty students are
using CAAD software, while the other half of the students are perform the design process using
conventional method. The reason of selecting this sample is there is combinations of student from
two methods that going to help to logically compare the degree of creativity in both methods. Ten
Instructors will selected to be interviewed as a sample from the department of architecture at
university of Khartoum, because they are fully involved in this issue and

Warren Truss Bridge Essay
I decided to make a warren truss bridge for this project (Wikipedia, 2015). This type of bridge uses
equilateral triangles to help bare tension or compression forces that the bridge may undergo
(Mudaliar, 2015). I picked this design because it is a popular bridge design and it will have a smaller
mass then some other bridge designs. This design has the potential to be very efficient in the amount
of weight it can hold because of it being lighter than other designs. The one problem you have to
solve is how to spread out the force being applied to the one location. This is because in a warren
truss bridge you want to try to spread out the forces across the entire bridge rather than a localized
point to minimize the forces on each of the segments (Boon, 2011). When the mass is in a localized
point all of the forces are larger than they are when the mass is spread out equally (Cridlebaugh,
2008). Using this information I designed the top of my bridge to try ... Show more content on

The first change was that the piece at the base of the bridge located on either side was moved from
the inside to the outside on the bottom of the bridge. I changed this because it was easier to glue the
two sides of the bridge together if it was on the bottom. This change didn't drastically change the
bridge but it did make the bridge closer to the 2cm block it had to be under at the starting point. The
second change that I added the braces to the wood pieces that made up the triangles. This helped my
bridge because it made it easier to keep the pieces of the bridges together. It also made the
construction process cleaner and easier so I would be able to execute the rest of the design with
more success. The third and final change I made to my design was that I removed the piece of wood
that was connected to the top of the bridge and the braces. I made this change because I thought that
the help it would provide to the bridge would not be worth the added

Evolution Of Cad And Cam Technology Systems Essay
The high request for ceramic restorations in the posterior and anterior areas has focused on the
evolution of CAD and CAM technology systems. In the early 1980s Pioneered by Mörmann, the
first CAD/CAM system called Cerec System started the era of CAD/CAM in dentistry. (Mörmann,
2006) The CAD/CAM technology was powered by the improvement of computing power and
specific recovery systems and milling machines. Therefore, to avoid traditionally digital systems
offer the opportunity and analogue impressions giving patient support and effective workflow. The
CAD/CAM systems are used in dental applications usually contain three components: 1. There is a
digital scanner that changes the geometry into digital information that can be prepared by the
computer. 2. Software that processes information and, depending on the application, produces an
information set for the product to be created. 3. A production technology that converts the data set
into the favourite product. (Shenoy and Prabhu, 2015) Computer Aided Design To produce 2D or

used to design the products in a varied range of industries, where the software performs controls for
defining the best structure and size for a diversity of product and manufacturing design applications.

Computer Aided Design ( Cad )
Introduction Computer Aided Design (CAD) has revolutionized the way that we design and
manufacture products. Before software was created to assist with drafting and design, engineers
would draw the designs by hand using drawing boards. These drawing boards have a variety of tools
to assist the engineer drawing, including a try square, multiple stencils for accurate shapes, and
many other tools. However, these drawings would take a large quantity of time to make; really
detailed drawings could potentially take months to draw. This is one of the biggest advantages of
CAD over drawing boards; it allows engineers to create drawings in a fraction of the time with
minimal work. CAD is now being used in a large number of manufacturing ... Show more content

It also allows designers to be very flexible with their designs, allowing multiple prototypes to be
relatively quickly. Especially with the help of CAM, prototypes are able to be made out of a cheaper
material to test things like structural integrity. Reduction in Drawing and Production Errors CAD
has greatly reduced the amount of drawing and production errors. This is due to CAD programs
allowing quick fixes to be made very quick and easily. For example, if one of the dimensions of a
shape is incorrect, they can be easily edited to be what they should be. CAD also gives a variety of
tools to prevent errors in the first place including, dimension tools, interference analysers, etc. Ease
of Manufacturing The ease of manufacturing has increased a large amount, due to CAD and CAM.
CAM allows the user to simply import a CAD document, select the desired settings and then the
machine does the rest of the hard work. This allows companies to create products at an increased
rate, whilst also retaining quality. It also allows for prototypes to be manufactured easily, meaning
designing is more flexible. Drawing Speed and Accuracy Drawing speed and accuracy has improved
due to CAD. This is because CAD is much more efficient, since instead of using a variety of tools
like try squares, stencils, etc., CAD allows these things to be done at the touch of a few buttons. It is
also far more accurate,

The Impact Of Technology And Modern Architecture
Technology and Modern Architecture How has it changed the Architects' way of thinking? Ali
Alzahrani Arizona State University Imagine that everything in the life is operated by computers
including people basics duties such as cooking, washing, working, or even thinking instead of the
person. It could be something magnificent for some people, but others would think that technology
would worsen people's lives. Lawler (2005) writes "Technology is a problem because we cannot do
without it and our use of it clearly makes us both better and worse" (p.194). In other words, the
problem of technology is that it is essential in our lives, but it has negative and positive effects on
us. A look around our everyday surroundings tells us that technology is ubiquitous, and it almost
exists in every aspect of people's lives and architecture is not an exemption from this. Architects
cannot move forward in their designs if they neglect the crucial need of technology nowadays. At
the same time, this technology has affected architects work in general. While some people allege
that technology has not affected the architects' manner of thinking, others agree that it has negatively
affected the way that architects think. Also, it has changed the manner in which architects present
and deal with their designs. Decreasing the creativity on starting concepts and impacting the

The Influence Of CAD On Society Essay
Before computers there were hands and tools. Before hands and tools there were just hands. Humans
have always been designing and throughout human history drafting is what became of it. With new
technology in building during the earlier years drafting needed to be changed to accommodate it.
Humans have always been able to find better ways to accomplish things. Drafting is no different.
Before people used tools to draw something they went to what we call now a "General Contractor"
with an idea and he had to come up with the rest. After a while the contractors wanted more. Just an
idea wasn't enough for them. Their clients sometimes wouldn't like what they had built for them. So

It is difficult to sketch on the computer because the computer is so accurate (Friedman). It is not a
good idea to draw a sketch accurately because between a sketch and the final drawing things change
drastically (Friedman). So it shouldn't be perfect. It should be something a drafter can interpret in
different ways.
To sketch a drawing an idea must first be thought of. Then once the idea has been thought of the
drafter begins with a piece of graph paper and a pencil. There are no tools needed for a sketch. The
boxes on the graph paper can be used as a guide and a scale (Friedman). A sketch is just an
estimation of the real thing. So one just estimates, nothing else.
CADD is very hard to sketch in. Some of the more sophisticated programs have a function where
the mouse can act like a sketch pencil (Bethune, 13). Although this seems like it might be like the
pencil it is not. Mice are harder to keep straight and even the lightweight drawing tasks may make
the hand tired (Bethune, 13). Other ways of getting a sketch on the computer are scanners, electronic
pens or touch pads. With the electronic pen, just point at the screen and that is where the dot, line or
shape shows up. However one moves the pen is what shows up. This can be hard because a screen is
at a weird angle, which makes drawing awkward. The touch pad however can be bought to the size
of the screen. These

shown in the demo as we go along. Students basically learn far quicker because they are learning by
practicing more than seeking or reading how to.. Concequently If we were to give the students what
we show in class as homework everybody would have a completely different experience with the
same software, not that they couldn't follow the instructions because that would contradict the
flipped class set up. I have experienced students receptiveness to this approach, which

Swot Analysis : Global Marketing
1. Introduction Global competition causes shortened life cycle for most products and companies can
no longer take the polycentric approach to international business. If a company takes the polycentric
approach to a foreign market, a globally oriented competitor will overcome their initial competitive
advantages by blanketing the global markets with similar product in a short period of time. It is
imperative for companies to acquire capabilities to generate sustainable competitive advantages over
their competitors. How to source globally is a critical strategic plan influenced by the need to
compete. In highly competitive markets, manufacturers either produce in low–cost locations or
outsource their components from low–cost producers on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Close coordination between R&D, manufacturing, and marketing activities across national
boundaries is a requirement for global sourcing strategy (Kotabe & Helsen, 2004, Chap. 10).
However there are always conflicts due to different objectives between R&D, manufacturing,
and marketing. Excessive product modification for the ever–changing customer needs will forsake
manufacturing efficiency and have negative cost effects, except for perfectly flexible computer
aided design and computer aided manufacturing facilities. CAD and CAM has improved
tremendously in recent years but the full benefit of flexible manufacturing still have a long way to
go. However in the case of excessive product standardization in order to lower manufacturing cost
will have negative effects on customer satisfaction. Innovative product designs and feature desired
by customer maybe a technological feat but might not be conducive to manufacturing. Product
design for manufacturability and product standardization has become important strategic issues. It is
imperative for companies to develop a sound sourcing strategy in order to exploit efficient
R&D, manufacturing, and marketing on global basis. Product designers, engineers, product
managers, purchasing manager, among others play important roles in corporate strategy
development. As for car manufacturing, Toyota's global sourcing

Building Information Modeling : Bim
Building Information Modeling "BIM", is an intelligent, model based process for planning,
designing, building and managing buildings and infrastructures. BIM is a very powerful way for
designers and architects to lay out building plans and designs. BIM is not just single piece of
software or model, but a system of information processing and collaboration, with data fixed within
the model. BIM begins with a 3D digital model of the building or infrastructure that is being
planned out. However, the model that BIM provides is much more than just a 3D model. BIM
technology allows for the project managers, designers and architects to see virtual equivalents of all
the buildings parts that are going to be used throughout the entire construction process of the
building. BIM brings together all of the information about every element of a building, and stores all
the data in one place. It allows anyone working on the project to access the data in order to integrate
different aspects of the design more effectively. BIM reduces the risk of mistakes which in turn
helps to stay on budget and enhance efficiency. BIM data can be used to illustrate the entire building
life–cycle, from start to finish. Spaces, systems, products and sequences can be shown in
comparative scale to each other. And by signaling conflict detection BIM prevents errors from
occurring at the various stages of development/construction. When BIM is utilized during a project,
its results in better communication which

The Pros And Cons Of Technology Essay

  • 1. The Pros and Cons of Technology Essay The Pros and Cons of Technology As far back as I can remember my family and I have taken advantage of technology. The types of technology have changed over the years, along with our usage and dependence on it. Technology is a fundamental part of our lifestyle, including both work and play. What is interesting is that we also have many friends who use very little technology in their day–to–day living. This drastic difference makes one wonder how necessary the technology really is, and whether or not our dependence on it is healthy in the long run. It is really easy to just get caught up in using technology without thinking about the pros and cons. I was born in the 80's, so technology as, I know it, was beginning to take aim at the ... The limited software made specifically for girls contained no problem–solving or strategy except possible the choice of what to wear. My mother purposely made my sister use technology and computers to become interested in a field that at the time was dominated by men. So, basically I had to learn computing on my own. Video games were a huge interest of mine and still are. I can remember the day my best friend snuck over with the latest in animated violence, "Mortal Combat". Let me tell you, once my mother witnessed my "virtual decapitation" of my friend in quite a gruesome manner, we weren't allowed to touch the television for a week. I started middle school when we moved to Rochester Hill's from Ann Arbor. Our new blended family (my mother remarried) had several computers and other new technological devices, as did most of the homes in the affluent community in which we lived. Home pc's became a useful tool in middle school; I surfed the net, wrote papers, and researched articles over the Internet. My whole family became engulfed with the technology wave. Our extended family and close friends eventually all came to a point where they used some sort of pc or computing device in their everyday lives. Computers made it easy to communicate, and because our family and relatives lived a good distance apart we were able to effectively chat and email our way out of "snail mail." CAD software replaces manual drafting with an automated process. CAD, or computer–aided design and drafting (CADD), is the use of computer technology for design drafting and also helpful in drawing different CNC's designs. CAD software replaces manual drafting with an automated process. As we work in the architecture, MEP, or structural engineering fields, we have probably used 2D or 3D CAD programs. Trees grow all over the world and their location very much depends on the environmental factors in play. Some trees like warm dry environments, whilst others thrive in cold and wet locations. How they are cut into usable sections and how they have been stored and processed can dramatically change their properties. The material can be cut by 'Through and Through ' sawing. This process is the cheapest, but the way the grain is cut means that you get a lower quality timber that is more difficult to use as it is prone to warping. The second and more expensive way to cut material is by 'Quarter ' sawing. This process gives the best possible cut, but greatly reduces the size of the pieces taken from a tree. The material is less prone to misshaping, yet due to the nature of the process is more expensive. • 8. Statement Of Sop In Computer Science Statement of Purpose 'Learning is like a ripple in the waters of an endless ocean'. This is one of my favourite percepts and for the past few decades, man has been advancing into the unknown realms of technology and science. This advancement is to make life comfortable for humans at home and at work and I would like to be an essential part of such enhancement. To accomplish this imposing task. I am aware that besides my strong dedication and hard work, an eminent background in Computer Science is required. Therefore, I have decided to pursue masters in Computer Science, which will lead me to a career of teaching and research. I am very earnest towards assimilating knowledge to the greatest amplitude. Effective teaching and proper guidance throughout schooling helped me to build a strong foundation. I was fascinated by the way things work, from dismantling and maintaining my own toys to modeling a dam as a part of science exhibition; my curiosity was focused at unraveling the function of devices. I have decided way long back to be a Mechanical Engineer which was a logical career choice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this section of the assignment, I will identify some of the most common health and safety concerns and specify the steps that employers and employees need to follow in order to comply with the law and to work safely, including guidelines for workstations, work environment and other equipment. Physiological Factors Affecting CADD Users VDUs is a term which encompasses monitors, display screen equipment (DSEs) iPads etc; any screen (usually forming part of a computer) that displays text, numerical data, or graphics. VDUs have been accused of causing a whole range of health problems, but in general these health issues arise as a result of VDUs being used incorrectly rather than the VDUs themselves. One of the most commonly reported health issues relating to VDU usage is repetitive strain injury (RSI) however the cause is usually a more generalised group of disorders known as 'upper limb disorders'. (Health and Safety Executive, 2011) Many of the disorders affecting the upper body are exacerbated by stress that can be mitigated by making some simple changes to the work environment. • 15. The Glass Cage By Nicholas Carr Essay #1: The Glass Cage We live in the age of constant technological innovation and endless information; in which we are so connected and dependent on the technology we use that we sometimes don't even realize how much we're relying on it. In The Glass Cage by Nicholas Carr, Carr defines automation as, "the use of computers and software to do things we used to do ourselves," and argues that there are daunting consequences to our reliance on technology (Carr 1). In his book, Nicholas Carr sets up three arguments related to automation, tacit knowledge, and the idea of work. His main arguments throughout the novel are that humans are overestimating the benefits of automation, losing tacit knowledge through our reliance on technology, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Again, he argues that instead of automation replacing the work we had before, technology is actually changing the way we work. This leads into the final point Carr makes in chapter one that automation is changing society's perception of work and leisure. Many people would agree that work is not pleasurable and humans like leisure. However, Carr argues that, "thanks to our bias for leisure over work, ease over effort, we overestimate automation's benefits" (19). Not only does he argue at the end of the chapter that most people are searching for a blend of life and work, but also he argues that people actually enjoy work over leisure because of the sense of accomplishment and productivity they feel afterwards. Carr argues that we overestimate the benefits of technology, when it may not even be what we really want as human beings. Furthermore, the his skeptical beliefs regarding automation, tacit knowledge, and work versus leisure are central to his argument throughout this entire book. Are humans facing the degeneration effect due to our reliance on technology? Carr would argue in chapter four that yes, we are losing creativity and knowledge of work because we are not actively using our memory and cognition. When humans typically learn a new skill, the generation effect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Archicad Essay AutoCAD vs. ArchiCAD in Architecture Architectural design today has moved from designing by hand to designing with several different software programs that have made the job much easier. Two of the main programs in many architectural firms today are AutoCAD2000 and ArchiCAD 6.5. Both are very productive design tools but each has its own defects in certain areas of the design process. Design processes today have been reversed from designing from the inside to the outside, to designing from the outside to the inside. Most designing today is based on the actual structural appearance one will perceive from the exterior, rather than the functional use of the interior; although both are taken into consideration. AutoCAD is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One only produces a plan drawing when one has resolved the elevations and layouts. A plan really needs to grow out of the functional and aesthetic requirements of a project. Yet ArchiCAD constrains one to work in plan from the start; from this the other views are created. This is great for documentation but very constraining for the design process. AutoCAD bypasses this problem better by showing a simultaneous plan, multiple elevations and sections, and of most importance, make the editing tools available in all views. For example, a parapet wall can be created by shaping the wall in an elevational view, where as in ArchiCAD, one can either create it as a shaped library object to be inserted where required or construct a false roof of the right height and pitch to which the wall can be trimmed. This demonstrates that AutoCAD is easier to use in this aspect. The current sections and elevations in AutoCAD are only usable to trace over because they are missing a proper layer structure and the possibility to be edited while still linked to the model. For instance, one should be able to add the windowsills on the elevations, even if they do not appear in the three–dimensional mode. Or one should be able to compositionally crosshatch an elevation and have the hatch adjusted if the model is changed. One should also be able to add things such as dimensions and annotations without having to add them in paper space, have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Current knowledge structure is not secure also, as the databases that are not prepared centrally are susceptible to changes by other designers and loose reliability. Capturing knowledge is essential, but capturing the knowledge that is not necessary would lead to confusion and decrease effective reusability. KBE systems solve all the problems which are indicated above. KBE allows designers to devote more time and effort in creative and the innovative work and makes design process simpler. The Theory Of Computational Design Thinking Jose Lopez September 22, 2016 ARC 5205 Advanced Theory Professor Neil Leach Computational Design Thinking The dominance of computational programs in the architectural career has become dominant throughout the years. It could be said that it has taken over the entire practice and that the human aspect had been taken out completely. In the book Computational Design Thinking, by Achim Menges and Sean Ahlquist this is discussed. It is important to understand how certain things work in an environment in other to comprehend how a design computer system actually works. In order to do so, a system generating a system, history and cybernetics, and how the machine and men interact needs to be analyzed. In doing so, it is determined that one cannot exist without the other. A system generating a systems dominates the idea of computational design. A system has to ideas explained in the book. The first idea is a system as a whole. The system as a whole refers to a particular holistic view of a single thing. While a generating system does not refer to a single thing; but a combination of things that include rules that are capable of generating many things. A system can only become a system if it has a holistic property. Meaning that if the object could have different meaning depending the approach. Bmw Case Study Analysis Executive Summary BMW has embarked on a mission to cut its notoriously long product development time in half utilizing a newly developed system code named "Digital Car". Senior management has decided to utilize the new process on the 7–series platform. In order to accomplish this goal, BMW is preparing to take advantage of the latest computer technology in car development. At the forefront of the new plan is a debate over the use of computer–aided–styling (CAS). We recommend that BMW implement the Computer Aided Styling system and processes into their production development program. Key Areas of Concern The main business problem that BMW is facing is reducing its long product development time. BMW's current design process began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... BMW's strategy for value creation lies in its meticulous engineering, including design and styling. BMW designers pride themselves in delivering the unique styling that BMW is known for. They strive for designs that generate emotions – "Works of art". This is evident in the fact that many of the designers came from art or industrial design schools. The current design process involves two full size clay models – which are extremely costly and time consuming. However, the use of clay models provides a visual representation of the final product that many felt irreplaceable. By being able to physically see and touch a model of the final product the model can be handcrafted to make the slightest details apparent. Once the models are complete they are captured digitally by a laser scanner and brought into a Computer Aided Design (CAD) System. The current process is working well to deliver the unique styling and quality that defines BMW, however, it is very time consuming and a major roadblock to reducing the product development time. Senior management utilized the functional managers from the five key process areas that accounted for about 90% of the critical processes involved in product development. These managers identified three main changes to the current system that needed to take place in order to meet the development time reduction goals: Increased parallelization of design tasks, elimination of some design iterations, and quicker completion of the ... Dr. Henkel acquired the dental center in 1990 after moving the suburbs in Horsham. Many patients would come to this dental clinic, sitting in the waiting lounge as they wait for their name to be announced. Each patient would be directed to the assigned room from the dental specialist (Dr. Henkel Interview). During the procedures for dental hygiene the dental hygienist would often comment on the patient and their overall health of their teeth. "Gums look much less swollen. I barely see any plaque?" Other times they remark, "Are you flossing more regularly?" Once the polishing and cleaning was complete the dental hygienist would then mention "Wait here, he will be here in just a moment." Who was coming? It was the inspector, Dr. Henkel. The man was as round as a globe. He would dress in his usual green collared shirt, as he waddled down the hallway with his thudding gait. Immediately, once entering the room, he would greet his patients with his warm welcoming smile. In addition, he would sit in his swivel chair, cover his mouth with his surgical mask and then put his dental glasses to carefully examine the x–ray screens. • 57. Warren Truss Bridge Essay I decided to make a warren truss bridge for this project (Wikipedia, 2015). This type of bridge uses equilateral triangles to help bare tension or compression forces that the bridge may undergo (Mudaliar, 2015). I picked this design because it is a popular bridge design and it will have a smaller mass then some other bridge designs. This design has the potential to be very efficient in the amount of weight it can hold because of it being lighter than other designs. The one problem you have to solve is how to spread out the force being applied to the one location. This is because in a warren truss bridge you want to try to spread out the forces across the entire bridge rather than a localized point to minimize the forces on each of the segments (Boon, 2011). When the mass is in a localized point all of the forces are larger than they are when the mass is spread out equally (Cridlebaugh, 2008). Using this information I designed the top of my bridge to try ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first change was that the piece at the base of the bridge located on either side was moved from the inside to the outside on the bottom of the bridge. I changed this because it was easier to glue the two sides of the bridge together if it was on the bottom. This change didn't drastically change the bridge but it did make the bridge closer to the 2cm block it had to be under at the starting point. The second change that I added the braces to the wood pieces that made up the triangles. This helped my bridge because it made it easier to keep the pieces of the bridges together. It also made the construction process cleaner and easier so I would be able to execute the rest of the design with more success. The third and final change I made to my design was that I removed the piece of wood that was connected to the top of the bridge and the braces. I made this change because I thought that the help it would provide to the bridge would not be worth the added ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the early 1980s Pioneered by Mörmann, the first CAD/CAM system called Cerec System started the era of CAD/CAM in dentistry. (Mörmann, 2006) The CAD/CAM technology was powered by the improvement of computing power and specific recovery systems and milling machines. Therefore, to avoid traditionally digital systems offer the opportunity and analogue impressions giving patient support and effective workflow. The CAD/CAM systems are used in dental applications usually contain three components: 1. There is a digital scanner that changes the geometry into digital information that can be prepared by the computer. 2. Software that processes information and, depending on the application, produces an information set for the product to be created. 3. A production technology that converts the data set into the favourite product. • 63. Computer Aided Design ( Cad ) Introduction Computer Aided Design (CAD) has revolutionized the way that we design and manufacture products. Before software was created to assist with drafting and design, engineers would draw the designs by hand using drawing boards. These drawing boards have a variety of tools to assist the engineer drawing, including a try square, multiple stencils for accurate shapes, and many other tools. However, these drawings would take a large quantity of time to make; really detailed drawings could potentially take months to draw. This is one of the biggest advantages of CAD over drawing boards; it allows engineers to create drawings in a fraction of the time with minimal work. CAD is now being used in a large number of manufacturing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It also allows designers to be very flexible with their designs, allowing multiple prototypes to be relatively quickly. Especially with the help of CAM, prototypes are able to be made out of a cheaper material to test things like structural integrity. Reduction in Drawing and Production Errors CAD has greatly reduced the amount of drawing and production errors. This is due to CAD programs allowing quick fixes to be made very quick and easily. For example, if one of the dimensions of a shape is incorrect, they can be easily edited to be what they should be. CAD also gives a variety of tools to prevent errors in the first place including, dimension tools, interference analysers, etc. Ease of Manufacturing The ease of manufacturing has increased a large amount, due to CAD and CAM. CAM allows the user to simply import a CAD document, select the desired settings and then the machine does the rest of the hard work. This allows companies to create products at an increased rate, whilst also retaining quality. It also allows for prototypes to be manufactured easily, meaning designing is more flexible. Drawing Speed and Accuracy Drawing speed and accuracy has improved due to CAD. This is because CAD is much more efficient, since instead of using a variety of tools like try squares, stencils, etc., CAD allows these things to be done at the touch of a few buttons. Ali Alzahrani Arizona State University Imagine that everything in the life is operated by computers including people basics duties such as cooking, washing, working, or even thinking instead of the person. It could be something magnificent for some people, but others would think that technology would worsen people's lives. Lawler (2005) writes "Technology is a problem because we cannot do without it and our use of it clearly makes us both better and worse" (p.194). In other words, the problem of technology is that it is essential in our lives, but it has negative and positive effects on us. A look around our everyday surroundings tells us that technology is ubiquitous, and it almost exists in every aspect of people's lives and architecture is not an exemption from this. Architects cannot move forward in their designs if they neglect the crucial need of technology nowadays. At the same time, this technology has affected architects work in general. While some people allege that technology has not affected the architects' manner of thinking, others agree that it has negatively affected the way that architects think. Also, it has changed the manner in which architects present and deal with their designs. Humans have always been designing and throughout human history drafting is what became of it. With new technology in building during the earlier years drafting needed to be changed to accommodate it. Humans have always been able to find better ways to accomplish things. Drafting is no different. Before people used tools to draw something they went to what we call now a "General Contractor" with an idea and he had to come up with the rest. After a while the contractors wanted more. It is difficult to sketch on the computer because the computer is so accurate (Friedman). It is not a good idea to draw a sketch accurately because between a sketch and the final drawing things change drastically (Friedman). So it shouldn't be perfect. It should be something a drafter can interpret in different ways. To sketch a drawing an idea must first be thought of. Then once the idea has been thought of the drafter begins with a piece of graph paper and a pencil. There are no tools needed for a sketch. The boxes on the graph paper can be used as a guide and a scale (Friedman). A sketch is just an estimation of the real thing. So one just estimates, nothing else. CADD is very hard to sketch in. Some of the more sophisticated programs have a function where the mouse can act like a sketch pencil (Bethune, 13). Although this seems like it might be like the pencil it is not. Mice are harder to keep straight and even the lightweight drawing tasks may make the hand tired (Bethune, 13). Other ways of getting a sketch on the computer are scanners, electronic pens or touch pads. With the electronic pen, just point at the screen and that is where the dot, line or shape shows up. However one moves the pen is what shows up. This can be hard because a screen is at a weird angle, which makes drawing awkward. The touch pad however can be bought to the size of the screen. • 80. Building Information Modeling : Bim Building Information Modeling "BIM", is an intelligent, model based process for planning, designing, building and managing buildings and infrastructures. BIM is a very powerful way for designers and architects to lay out building plans and designs. BIM is not just single piece of software or model, but a system of information processing and collaboration, with data fixed within the model. BIM begins with a 3D digital model of the building or infrastructure that is being planned out. However, the model that BIM provides is much more than just a 3D model. BIM technology allows for the project managers, designers and architects to see virtual equivalents of all the buildings parts that are going to be used throughout the entire construction process of the building. BIM brings together all of the information about every element of a building, and stores all the data in one place. It allows anyone working on the project to access the data in order to integrate different aspects of the design more effectively. BIM reduces the risk of mistakes which in turn helps to stay on budget and enhance efficiency. BIM data can be used to illustrate the entire building life–cycle, from start to finish. Spaces, systems, products and sequences can be shown in comparative scale to each other. And by signaling conflict detection BIM prevents errors from occurring at the various stages of development/construction.
