Paulo Freire Response Summary
Response #1 Paulo Freire says, "The student records, memorizes, and repeats these phrases without
perceiving what four times four really means." A student only grasps what the teacher has taught
them. An example of my own would be in English class when we learn about grammar rules and
pun cation. We learned about the grammar rules and how they could affect your paper if you do did
not know them. We never actually learned what they meant. A problem posing class in math would
be the teacher and student trying to come up with a way that the student can understand how to do
problems. Also, the student asking the teacher questions about different ways they could solve the
problem successfully. An authentic form of thought and action is when a student

Analysis Of Paulo Freire 's ' The Pedogogy Of The Oppressed '
In this reading from the book "THE PEDOGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED", the author Paulo Freire
tackles three various types of educational styles and their direct influence on the student and the
society. The liberation teaching style, the narrative technique, and the banking style of teaching. As
the title suggests, there are two educational styles directed to the oppressed and the oppressor. These
are; the banking and the narrative educational style. Paulo Freire in a very persuasive way argues,
the only way to transform people 's lives as a teacher is the use of the liberation approach where
students are giving the freedom to express themselves and communicate with the teacher to help the
students understand the methods used in teaching. This helps students interact, ask questions and
solve problems with both their peers and the teacher. According to Pianta, "Positive student– teacher
relationships are characterized by open communication, as well as emotional and academic support
that exist between students and teachers". The other approach is the narrative and the banking
techniques of teaching. These approaches make students not think critically and the author points
out how useless it is for students. Paulo Freire talks further and explains the narrative approach to
teaching. In the narrative style, it is seen by the reader that the student is a container to be filled with
information and to regurgitate back to the teacher at the student's request without knowing the

The Private Liberation
Paulo Freire introduces the idea of a "problem–posing" education system in his book The Pedagogy
of the Oppressed, which offers a highly effective alternative to the traditional method of memorizing
facts that he deems the "banking" concept of education. Problem posing allows individuals to
expand their own thoughts, ideas, and opinions through open discussion in a classroom setting. I
went through such an experience senior year in my Comparative Government class, which focused
on different governments along with the key social and economic issues they face. While many may
argue that the "banking" concept has some value in certain issues, the alternative in problem–posing
offers a broader experience in which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The subject of government is engrained in peoples' minds as being a "history subject" but the class
showed that in reality it is a living, changing, and expanding subject. Freire describes this loss of
meaning in the first page when he says "...Contents which are detached from reality, disconnected
from totality that engendered them and could give them significance. Words are emptied of their
concreteness and become a hollow, alienated, and alienating verbosity" (318). A "banking"
education class would have had students sitting in straight rows staring at the white board fiercely
copying every single detail that the teacher wrote down about each of the governments, and in the
minds of the students these would be concrete unchanging situations. If someone were to come into
a discussion that the class was having, while wearing a blindfold, it would be a difficult task to
identify the instructor of the course because each student had a new and different perspective on the
article. The teacher, although presumed to have more knowledge than all of us as students, never
exerted his own thoughts and ideas as authoritative and absolute but offered ideas and perspective
the same way that each student brought their own opinions to the table. The focus was for each
student to foster his or her analytical skills,

Poverty And Poverty
The process of globalization has created a borderless world through the free flow of knowledge and
materials and mobility of people and making it become a global village (Andleeb, 2014). According
to Rouse (n.d.), he mentioned that "globalization is the process in which people, ideas, and goods
spread throughout the world, spurring more interaction and integration between the world's cultures,
governments, and economics." However, the world virtually looks like the broken mirror, between
rich and poor, powerful and powerless, strong and weak. This situation has affected many different
parts of the society, such as education, health, finance and economy. And today it has already
become the different picture as we have imagined. To address ... Show more content on

In New Zealand, people always called "poverty or underprivileged". While there is no poverty in
New Zealand based on Third World standards, there are real concerns about inadequate living
conditions, particularly for a significant proportion of children (Wilkinson and Jeram, 2016). In
2008, 237,000 New Zealand children are living in poverty. It means one of five kids in New Zealand
lives in poverty, which is about 22 percent (Every Child Counts, 2010). According to UNICEF (n.d.)
data, it shows that 295,000 NZ children have spent their childhood in poor condition, which is about
28 percent. UNICEF (n.d.) also defines poverty as that "child poverty occurs when children are
being deprived of the material, spiritual and emotional resources needed to survive, develop and
thrive". These children could not have equal rights to receive health care or good standard living in
the society, such as obtaining an opportunity of education in New Zealand.
What's more, Human Rights Commission (2010) also points out that "education is essential for the
development of human potential, enjoyment of the full range of human rights and respect for the
rights of others." Training could help adults and children staying far away from poverty. The right to

Critical Literacy Essay
Premise for Critical Literacy
Critical Literacy has many different forms, and can be very different depending on which classroom
it is taking place in. The basic premise that I acquired from researching critical literacy is that it
requires the literate consumers of the text to adopt a critical questioning approach (Critical Literacy,
2015). Critical Literacy is forming an individual opinion on a topic that isn't only superficial, but
also in depth and meaningful. Being critically literate isn't about attaining literacy for the purpose of
reading letters on a page, it is to read the words on the page and become engaged in a discussion
formulating opinions and expressing ideas openly. Becoming critically literate means that an

A couple of them are Paulo Freire, Allen Luke, Henry Giroux, and Joe Kincheloe. Many of them
share the same beliefs about this topic, but with a different viewpoint. Paulo Freire was a twentieth–
century Brazilian educator. He was born September 19, 1921 and died May 2, 1997. Freire was a
leading advocate for critical pedagogy, and contributed to the philosophy of education from a more
classical approach such as Plato and modern Marxist. Freire believed in a 'banking method' which is
compared to students. He viewed students as empty bank accounts waiting to be filled by the
teacher. According to Freire, by filling students with this new knowledge it transforms them into
receiving objects (Paulo Freire, Wiki). Paulo Freire believed that Critical thinking was not a one–
way development, not "something done for students or to them" for their own good (Freire, 1989,
34). Freire's pedagogy focused on writing, reading, and things based around the student's life, and
not repetitive lecturing. One of Freire's most stressed phrases, I believe, is "reading the world."

The Importance Of Teaching In Education
Introduction
Education is about in–parting knowledge based on one's belief, truth and justification with the
purpose of surviving in this changing world. Highly educated people are well recognized and given
high reputation in the society. Hence, teaching is a process of sharing information between the
teacher and students in a positive, caring, changing and stress free environment where new
knowledge must be constructed and tested through student – teacher interaction using different
strategies so that children could master knowledge and skills of desired fields including values,
ethics, and other social knowledge. To fulfill this purpose, teachers should be active, forward
thinking, energetic, knowledgeable, sincere and punctual for changing one's truth, belief and
justification. To satisfy these educational needs, learning should be a fun mechanism for students in
which they enjoy by responding, interacting, socializing, inventing, sharing, discovering and
deciding about knowledge, skills, values, ethics and discipline by expressing a permanent change in
behaviour. As learning is defined as a permanent change in behaviour, it is teacher's interest to
consider teaching as a personal challenge in which students are diverted to a more progressive
learning environment where they make their own judgment based on what they experience with
exposure to real life like activities. With this as teacher's interest in the field, it is a sensation for
them to focus on the whole child

Paulo Freire: The Dehumanization Of Oppression
According to Paulo Freire, (2000) "Dehumanization is not a given destiny but the result of an unjust
order that engenders violence in the oppressors, which in turn dehumanizes the oppressed" (p, 44).
This quote is interesting to me because it is true that making someone less human doesn't
necessarily happen to a person. It stems from unfair treatment done by the oppressors. Which makes
that person become oppressed by their oppressors. I don't know anyone who automatically becomes
oppressed because some sort of action would have to be done to that person to change him into an
animal or inhuman. Another quote I like Freire states, for the oppressors, (2000) "Human beings
refers only to themselves; other people are things" (p. 57). The reason ... Show more content on

According to Freire, "Dehumanization marks not only those whose humanity has been stolen, but
also those who have stolen it" (p. 44). Humanization is to become a human and not an object. I
know that I have been dehumanized through the European way of life. I only speak and write
English even though it wasn't forced on to me. The reason why I choose to speak and write English
is because I see that without it I won't be able to go to school or even be successful in school. I've
been reduced to being depended on the Anglo for my survival and that is scary because I'm not
human. So to be human again I need to be humanized by understanding that I lost my language and
culture. I need to restore my identity as a Navajo

Paulo Freire
After reading Paulo Freire text on "the 'banking' concept of education", it made me recall my
situation in primary and secondary school as a child where we will all sit in class and "listen
meekly" (Freire, 216;216) and we were filled with fear whenever we were around those who taught
us (respect). This made me to see why Freire was so bold about this "concept" (Freire, 216). He sees
this concept as the necessary evil this is because it causes division in the society between the teacher
and the student. This is so because the teachers opinion of the student is that the student knows
nothing. In this essay I will be addressing both sides of the argument if the "banking" concept is has
value as a concept and whether it should be used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And no military ruler would want to see (his objects) those who he or she is ruling usurp his or her
power. And therefore the dictator will do anything to oppress those who he is ruling. But in recent
times Freire position will not hold because just as Freire chose not to be oppressed by such a system
of education that is how other people behave. What I mean here is that it's the person that chooses to
stay oppressed and we as an individual have the ability to make choices and we can either accept
what they deposit or reject it. "The 'banking' concept of education" (Freire, 216) cannot be perceived
as evil, this is because it is individuals who are trained to teach lesser minds such as students and
guide them into the world and also in the real world everything that has a bad side also has a good
side. Students don't know everything and that is why "The 'Banking' Concept" (Freire, 216) is a
good concept because students need to be taught and molded into functioning members of society
and that could not possibly be done without being taught and molded in a classroom by
professionals. Another reason Freire statement is false is the issue of time. Nobody would want to
spend a long period of time going to school or trying to acquire education where in some areas it is
very expensive. Under the "banking concept"(Freire, 216) everything is properly laid out to mirror
the changes in society and this planning saves time and this enables the teacher to be able to cover
more areas because a schedule is followed. Teachers aren't employed because they know better than
their student but if this is the case they would be working somewhere else instead of teaching.
Teachers are employed because they are to impart knowledge to the student and they are there to

Speech On The Oppressed By Paulo Freire
Mohamad Afiq Md Daud

Conversation Plan
In Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire describes about what the education system supposedly
need to be. He critiques that the education during his era is almost as similar as dictatorship. In this
style of education, teacher has the superiority over their students. The teacher is the one who know
everything, while the students are considered to know nothing, and that is absolutely unfair towards
the students because they do not have the chance to "learning". Furthermore, based on Kirp 's
excerpt entitled 'Make School a Democracy ', he reveals the solution towards the education system
problem during Freire 's era. The solution is also known as Escuela Nueva (New School) model.
Hence, what do I realize is the education is a process of teaching and learning between the teacher
and the students. An effective education system leads the students in becoming a person with a good
thinking skills who able to understand the facts rather than memorizing it. Based on what I have
read, I recognized that both Freire and Kirp have a similar main idea in fighting for the education
rights. They suggest that education needs to be an interactive learning. Both teacher and students
need to communicate by making discussion or sharing opinions; this theory is also called as
problem–posing education. For example, a teacher is posing a question for the students, and he or
she has already prepared the answer; however, the students independently

Paulo Freire: Pedagogue Essay
Throughout history, many men and women have made important contributions to the world of
education. Amongst these is the Brazilian scholar Paulo Freire, whose influences on the world have
been both broad and deep. A true believer in Marxist theory, his central ideas regarding education
revolve around the concept that the experience and learning process of education are more important
than the "facts" or concepts that are being taught. Consequently, traditional teaching methods
(known as "Banking") train students to be passive, unthinking, and subservient to their superiors;
instead, teachers should "free" their students by employing "problem–posing" techniques, where
teachers not only present concepts for students to analyse, but ... Show more content on

He saw education (specifically, literacy) not merely as a means of transferring information as if one
were filling a box, but instead as a means of liberation and revolution, that instruction should teach
students how to think, not what to think, and give them the power to call into question the facts of
everyday life (Gibson). In Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, he suggests that the common people
are constantly oppressed and forced to become submissive, and that in turn, they will oppress others
in a similar fashion. Traditional education is one of the first vehicles for this cycle of oppression and
submission, and therefore Freire insists that educators must stimulate students to think through
acceptance and equality; that a teacher "is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn
while being taught also teach authority must be on the side of freedom". According to Freire, it is
critical that this student–teacher equality exist in order for a student to develop his or her ability to
think individually. In contrast to Freire's ideal

Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Of Education
the Brazilian ideologist Paulo Freire has both challenged and subsequently shaped the modern
concept of education as well as the nature of the student–teacher relationship with his radical ideas.
In his essay "The 'Banking' Concept of Education", Freire fervently deconstructs the flaw within the
education system and offers a solution which he believes mediates the teacher–student imbalance.
The detrimental facet of academic institutions, Freire argues, is the "oppressive depositing" of
information by teachers into students. He goes on to explain that such a system merely
institutionalizes a one way "transaction" in which the teacher is the only true benefiter. Freire

back to the fact that reality is characterized by a perpetual cycle of change. Simultaneously, it is
important to have a realistic gauge for the extent of the situation that Freire calls a problem. The
authoritarian style of teaching that he so vehemently opposes is not a phenomenon which takes
place in every single classroom. In fact, depending on where an individual lives his or her teacher
may adopt and practice the very style of teacher–student relations that Freire advocates so

The Problem Posing By Paulo Freire
Classroom experiences are like polyatomic ions: some are positive while others are negative. While
the majority of the experiences at the West Genesee School District have been positive, I can
recollect one experience that was particularly negative. During the duration of my Advanced
Placement global history course, I was the subject in a class, that, by definition, would be closer to
the "problem–posing" classroom that Paulo Freire describes in his piece "The 'Banking' Concept of
Education". In his works, Paulo Freire asserts that the "problem–posing education makes them [the
students] critical thinkers" (Freire 221). As Freire describes, a class that implements the problem–
posing policy is one in which students are to become critical thinkers. Freire would have been
ecstatic that other educators carried out his ideas in their own "problem–posing" classroom. My
teacher me made it unequivocal that this class was going to challenge the way we analyzed and
understood history. The teacher continued to describe the role of the student in the classroom; the
educator expected the pupil to analyze readings and argue about what the pupil deemed to be the
most important concepts presented. Regardless of the content, Egyptian hieroglyphics or Genghis
Kahn, while the students studied history, the teacher insisted that the students evaluated the
relationships between the causes, effects, and relevance of various topics throughout the course. In
addition, the student prepared to discuss

Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Of Education Summary
Paulo Freire raises ideas and issues with the contemporary education system in his "The 'Banking'
Concept of Education." He analogizes the traditional copy notes, memorize, and regurgitate
information to the modern–day banking systems. He writes early on in this work, "Education thus
becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the
depositor." "This is the 'banking' concept of education" (216). Freire puts the way most classes are
taught as of late in a great perspective. He also gives reasonable solutions to the many disputes of
the current and age old teacher–student atmosphere. Though throughout the writing, Freire
expresses his ideas and opinions in a logical and readable manner, no reader would be able to
understand all of his intricacies and anecdotes included. While most would delve into the
understood, looking into the foggy and misunderstood could be much more freeing. Whilst
explaining a true 'banking' concept scenario, Freire includes a bit about culture circles in Chile and
the interaction between an "educator" and a "peasant." The peasant gives an insightful answer that is
very unexpected about culture and the world. The educator assures him that there would still be a
world without men if all animals and trees and such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

without this small inclusion. It asks readers, why be included? What does consciousness have to do

piece, the 'banking' concept doesn't allow active learning. Active learning is needed to create the

Horace Mann's Pedagogy Theory Of Education
Horace Mann was the first to advocate for public education, because of his upbringing, he strongly
believed that education "is the great equalizer of the conditions of men" by Horace Mann. He was
the founder of Pedagogy, as well as the "Common School Movement", and founded the "Common
School Journal" as well. He led a campaign offering universal education: by which he meant that all
children regardless of race, religion, and socioeconomic background should receive an education.
He also stated that this education be taught by trained professionals (teachers) and that all education
be free of religious influence, and all to be found by the community which will benefit from its
children's education in the future.
His Pedagogy theory of education is to explore and discover. To awaken the curiosity in children for
children to be able to explore and find their passion. With that passion, they can be important drivers
of the socio–economic environment that surrounds them directly and indirectly.

we should not use the banking concept of education as teachers. The banking concept is when a
teacher believes they are a genius on his or her content subject and treats the children's minds as

real challenges or chance for student growth. Freire says, "Narration...leads the students to

Summary Of The Banking Concept Of Education By Paulo Freire
Paulo Freire is an author who poses questions and arguments that challenge everything that his
readers think and know. "The Banking Concept of Education" from Pedagogy of the Oppressed
poses the question about the education system and how teachers are narrators and students are
recorders. In his essay he discusses how the students – who he refers to as containers – receive their
information from teachers. However, the teachers never communicate with their subordinates. The
idea of "banking" suggests that students are only receiving, memorizing and receiving facts from the
"depositor" which made the students "depositories." The main ideas drawn from this article are
related to education, knowledge and communication.

The End Of Remembering, And Paulo Freire
Do you consider yourself to have a great memory or do you consider yourself to have a bad
memory? Can you remember more than four phone numbers and more than three immediate family
members birthdays without using any technology? If you cannot answer those simple questions than
maybe you should reconsider on working on your memorization side of your brain. Joshua Foer, the
author of The End of Remembering, and Paulo Freire, author of The "Banking" Concept of
Education, both write about how important memory is in the world today. In Foer's passage he states
that before paper, books, and modern technology people were expected to remember any piece of
information that was given to them. Now people rely on anything that could record information so
they would not have to remember it or worry about forgetting. He believes that technology is
running our memory. However in Freire's passage he states that memorizing decontextualizes and is
unrelated to present conditions, but memory can concrete conditions of our daily lives. The
importance of memory and its functions in the world today is that it lets a person find self–identity,
prevents shallow base of knowledge, and sets values. Memory provides a sense of personal identity.
Memories that were made from the past create the person that they have become today. It helps to

oppression: the oppressor, who is demonstrating his power by displaying cruelty towards the second
part of oppression, the oppressed. The oppressed take part in offenses made by the oppressor, that

Capitol. People are suffering and working endlessly each and every day inside the districts, while
everybody in the Capitol is living a superb and wealthy life. In order for this to change, Panem
needs to reflect on these views, and change their way of life. In the novel, Peeta says, "Only I keep

Paulo Freire : The Philosophy Of Education
The world would be a better place if every child had the opportunity to an education. Education is
an extremely vital part of life. Without an education, people would live a life of ignorance and
close–mindedness. It helps society function and behaves civilized. Education is a philosophy which
is the study of examining and thinking about questionable ethical problems and accepted certainties.
People study philosophy to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world they live in
and the relationships to the world and to each other. Paulo Freire was a man who was willing to fight
the education system by creating Critical Pedagogy and by the changing the world with his idea. It
was a social movement and philosophy of education that developed and applied concepts from
critical theory and related theories to the field of education and the study of culture. Paulo Freire
was an idealist whose purpose was to build critical consciousness in literacy campaigns, especially
in Grenada.
Paulo Freire was one of the best influential educators of the world of the 20th century. He was born
on September 19, 1921, in the port city of Recife, the capital of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil,
which was one of the poorest regions in the country. Freire was born into a middle–class family but
with the global crisis of 1929, his family would endure poverty and hunger. He recalls in Moacir

One can notice that as the paintings of her have evolved, Mary becomes more and more seductive.
Her clothes are depicted more informal and loose and she is even topless in the last two images. This
shows how man has changed their point of view about women to a sexual perspective. It
demonstrates how man changed the meaning of art to benefit themselves by pleasing their own
sexual desires. This can also be seen in other painting techniques such as oil paintings. Since oil
paintings utilizes advance techniques, they could show more depth and details in what they
portrayed. Those who were identified as wealthy had the ease to take control over the breakthrough
of art by inputting textures to an object such as clothes to make them seem luxurious. The same
could be seen in landscape drawings/ paintings. Berger goes on to state that before artists' interests

capitalism; rather it was thought of as the arena in which capitalism and social life and each
individual life had its being", as humans used and enjoyed the beauty of nature and its landscapes

Pedagogy Of The Oppressed By Paulo Freire
Paulo Freire's book Pedagogy of the Oppressed analyzes the issues of different styles and techniques
of teaching. Whether it be at school, home, or by a parent education can be pushed upon you in
different forms. These manners of education can treat people as objects; use forms of paternalism
due to authority over someone, and restrict people from having freedom and responsibilities. One of
the mechanisms Freire talks about is banking education:
Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the
teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqués and makes
deposits, which the students patiently receive, memorize and repeat. This is the "banking" concept
of education, in which the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving,
filing, and storing the deposits.
Ever since I can remember I always noticed I would be in classes in school that portrayed banking

Analysis of ''Banking Concept of Education"
People begin their education from day one till the day they die. Therefore, every day, we always
learn new things in different ways such as education, news, magazine, internet, etc. An ideologist,
Paulo Freire, in his narrative essay, "The Banking Concept of Education," present the modern
concept of and approaches to education. Freire's purpose is to compare the two educational systems,
the "banking concept" and the "problem–posing concept". Throughout his essay, he argues strongly
to support his creative own and make his readers believe that problem–posing education is more
efficient than the banking education.
According to the "The Banking Concept of Education" by Paulo Freire, I believe that Freire does a
good job of showing the reader his idea about education. He makes the reader think about
him/herself by the way he shows the fact obvious in their life. He hopes the reader know the depth
of difference between the banking system and the problem–posing system. Therefore, this essay is
talking about learning can only be achieved by communication with others and this can't be
achieved through the banking concept. He describes, "Education thus becomes an act of depositing,
in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor" (Friera, 257). He thinks
that the banking concept as narration because the teacher report to lead the students memorize and

Summary Of The Banking Concept Of Education
Paulo Freire's essay "The Banking Concept of Education" is a critique on our tradition education
system. Freire believed that the banking concept of education is that of a relationship of an
oppressor and the oppressed, stating banking "dehumanizes students and serves the interest of those
who oppress them" (Freire 62). He also refers to the banking concept as an education which holds
emphasizes with memorization, facts, formula, and disciple on the students' part, while the teacher's
narration, that is detached from reality, becomes "hollow, alienated, and alienating verbosity" for the
students (Freire 63). As well, the banking concept, as Freire explains, is like an act of depositing,
where the students are the depositories and the teachers are the depositor (Freire 63). ... Show more

Freire proposes a method that rids the banking concept from our education system by having
education become a conversation amongst equals in which both the teachers and students learn from
one another (Freire 62). Thus creating an environment where the teacher–student relationship is
more than depositories and depositors, and not as Freire says, " [i]n which the scope of action
allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits" (Freire

Mark Edmundson And Paulo Freire
Although Mark Edmundson and Paulo Freire believe that a higher form of education such as, a
stronger teaching ethics, deeper understanding, and more passionate students is needed to correct the
issues at hand. In their essay they both adopt a different style to present tis idea. Paulo Freire wants
the individual to form himself rather than be formed. To this end, he proposes that educational topics
or opportunities be taken from the daily experience the individual constantly encounters and avoid
the current educational pitfall of resorting to artificial experiences. While, Edmundson is trying to
show how education has change due to the leak of consumerism into universities. Edmundson
acknowledge his own conformity and promise to change back to what he thinks will make a good
class and challenge his students to think on another level.
Paulo Freire dwells on the idea that a teacher's task is to simplify "fill" a student's mind. He
describes the banking concept as a habitual learning process where the teachers oppress the
knowledge that they considered important on the student by supplying the student with the material
and not given them the opportunity to question the material presented. Freire states; that "In the
banking concept of education, knowledge is a gift bestowed by those who considered themselves
knowledgeable upon those whom they considered to know nothing. Projecting an absolute
ignorance onto others, a characteristic of the ideology of oppression, negates

The Banking Concept Of Education By Paulo Freire
According to Paulo Freire in The "Banking" Concept of Education, the "narrative" nature of the
teacher–student correspondence is toxic and counterproductive in any form (Freire 259). To capture
this idea, Freire makes education synonymous with a teacher making deposits into the mind of a
student, but "the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and
storing the deposits" (Freire 260). Therefore, interpretation and creativity are commodities that do
not reach the surface of a student's work or thoughts. A personal example of such a loss in
experience comes directly from my freshman high school English class, and said experience
strongly represents a "banking" atmosphere. In contrast, a "problem–posing" classroom would
inspire original thought and energetic conversation. All in all, the teacher–student relationship is a
critical focal point in terms of whether or not a classroom is successful.
Paulo Freire recognizes the practice of roles that "mirror oppressive society" by noting the
overwhelming social acceptance that "the teacher is the Subject of the learning process, while the
pupils are mere objects", utterly halting any sort of independent or creative thinking from a student
(Freire 261). Suddenly, the outlook of having no dialogue between a teacher and student, only
opinionated information transference, eliminates the possibility for innovation. In my English class,
my teacher spewed information at the class to memorize and

Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Of Education
Paulo Freire believes that the world is primarily dominated by the "banking" concept in regards to
education. Under the "banking" concept, Freire describes the relationship between students and
teachers as "involv[ing] a narrating Subject (the teacher) and patient, listening objects (the
students)" (216). Freire later goes on to symbolize students as empty receptacles awaiting teachers
to dump their knowledge freely to fill the empty spaces. Memorization, obedience, oppression, and
dominance all describe the inner workings of the "banking" concept. Students lose their ability to
become cogitative thinkers as they memorize lectures, never speak their voice or dissent to teachers,
and give all of their freedom to their professors. Students then become slaves to the classroom, and
rather than a symbiotic relationship existing between students and teachers, the road is very one
way. If Freire were to analyze ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In section two of the piece, Rodriguez even admits that with many of the books he did not
understand the true meaning. Before closing Section II, Rodriguez states "I read in order to acquire a
point of view. I vacuumed books for epigrams, scraps of information, ideas, themes – anything to fill
the hollow within me and make me feel educated" (350). This points readers in the direction that the
"banking" concept molds students to be mindless receptacles awaiting dumped knowledge; reading
then is used to soak in the word count and not the actual meaning behind the piece. In "The
'Banking' Concept of Education," Freire makes an interesting point:
"The interests of the oppressors lie in 'changing the consciousness of the oppressed, not the situation
which oppresses them'...the more the oppressed can be led to adapt to that situation, the more easily
they can be dominated"

The art of the conclusion is to summarize and generalize experiences or information in order to
affect the reader, and to strongly close out a piece of writing. Moreover, an author must strive to
utilize universal situations to increase the ability to relate to an essay for a conclusion to demand
understanding. Three writers from Ways of Reading have conclusions that adequately achieve an
effective conclusion: Paulo Freire, author of The "Banking" Concept of Education, Richard
Rodriguez, author of The Achievement of Desire, and Alberto Alvaro Rios, author of Translating

There is room for dialogue in this explanation as to whether or not this type of society is necessary
for utilizing this method of learning and teaching, but the essence of such a concept almost
disconnects the reader from the essayist. Throughout the whole article, there are examples of what a
"banking" classroom may feel like, allowing the reader to relate to some experiences, but the
conclusion separates Freire's idea of how education should evolve and the reader's involvement in
that process. According to writer Neil Patel, it is absolutely required that this "disclaimer" exist in
the conclusion as to "[clarify] what [Freire] is saying so [the reader takes] away the right message"
(Neil 4). Freire uses this disclaimer to answer the popular question associated with conclusions: so
what? To Freire, the main message of his essay is to engage in a "problem–posing" atmosphere, and
his "so what?" is that students today are losing a vital opportunity to learn by not actively trying to
change the ways of education. In summary, Freire uses his conclusion to summarize and connect his
essay, like most writers, but what sets him apart is his demand for change in learning from the reader
by dehumanizing the "banking" education style and suggesting an educational revolution.

In novel, chapter 2 of Pedagogy of The Oppressed written by Paulo Freire we are introduced to two
educational concepts. Freire refers to the concepts as the banking concept and problem–posing
concept. The banking concept is the assumption that the teacher controls and "fills" students with
selected information. Freire believes " It is the people themselves who are filled away through lack
of creativity, transformation, and knowledge in this misguided system" (Freire 1). On the other hand
Freire believes that the soulution to the education system is problem–posing. This concept
encourgaes student dialogue, creativity, and discovery. Meaning that the student is free and in
control of his education. I believe Freire decribition of the banking concept is unconsintent. A
teacher goal is not to control and "fill" students with memorization. Instead, the goal is to expand a
student mind with critical information that sometimes needs memorization such as math equations,
history, science, and vocabulary.

William Brickman and Paulo Freire
William Brickman and Paulo Freire were two famous educators that brought their own ideas and
contributions to the education field. They shared some similarities, differences, challenges, and an
overall positive impact on education that is with us today.
The contribution of Brickman and Freire
Brickman's Contribution
Brickman thought it was essential to have comparative education, which is the idea that
professionals in the education field be exposed to different cultures, living in a different country,
learning to speak the language, sharing and gaining knowledge with their counterparts, and gaining
insight in the diversity of education.( Silova & Brehm,2010) Brickman founded the Comparative

The bank concept is the concept that teachers teach what they want and the learners listen, teachers
decide what they will teach and what the learner will learn. Dialogue is the term used to describe a
mutual respect of teaching and learning, where both parties contribute and have a mutual respect for
one another. (Flanagan, 2005)
Similarities between Brickman and Freire
Both men were raised in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods. Brickman was raised in the Lower
East side of New York, where he was exposed to a variety of multilingual languages, media, and
parents who spoke a variety of languages. Brickman as a young child was exposed to different
cultures and history. (Silova & Brehm, 2010). Freire's family found themselves in financial crisis
after the Wall Street crashed in 1929 and his father took a financial loss that resulted in the family
moving to a lower socioeconomic area in Brazil. (Flanagan, 2005). This financial crisis allowed
Freire to witness firsthand the poverty of the peasants and the effect it had on their education.
(Flanagan, 2005). The similarities of both educators living in poor conditions seemed to be a
motivator for both men's contribution to the education field.
The differences between Brickman and Freire

Analysis Of Paulo Freire 's ' The Banking Theory ' Concept...
In the essay "The 'Banking' Concept of Education," Paulo Freire creates the argument that teachers
simply deposit knowledge into students and the students then only store the deposits, without having
any input of their own. He says that "the student records, memorizes, and repeats these phrases
without perceiving what four times four really means...." (318).
"The teacher teaches and the students are taught;" "the teacher chooses and enforces his choice, and
the students comply;" "the teacher chooses the program content, and the students (who were not
consulted) adapt to it." Those are only some of the points made by Freire in the banking theory.
Although Freire is talking about education, this theory can also be applied to modern day
advertisement. Companies plaster advertisements anywhere they can, from billboards to television
screens, telling viewers what they need to look like, act like, be like, and talk like, while the viewers
simply take in that information and conform to it.
In this Sisley advertisement, two models are snorting what would be expected to be cocaine, but
instead it is a white dress. The words "Fashion Junkie" are printed underneath the brand name. The
bright white of the dress creates a contrast with the pitch black background, creating an atmosphere
of darkness. Additionally, both models are caked with heavy eye makeup, and the model on the right
has her eyes rolled back giving the appearance of being high. This Sisley advertisement uses Freire's

The Ideologies Put Forth By Paulo Freire
The ideologies put forth by Paulo Freire including liberation education, pedagogy of the oppressed,
inequality and pedagogy of possibility gives educators hope. These are the educators who are
dedicated to bring about positive change in education and by extension society. Freire's contribution
to education through his research and theories resonates with Trinbagonian educators as it
encompasses issues of slavery, colonialism, post colonialism social mobility and democracy.
Furthermore, Freire's ontology is grounded in comprehensive philosophical underpinnings including
that of John Dewey and Jean Piaget. Their contributions have shaped education internationally as
well as locally. Thus, the authors' critique of Freire's work in an attempt to restructure his theories is
a worthwhile analysis and allows for self–reflection, critical thinking and the assurance of hope, in
that, if education does nothing else, it must inspire hope in reference to the school of pragmatism.
Such an educational philosophy in the words to Giroux (2007), points to a future in which
democratic practices create the conditions for each generation of youth to struggle anew to sustain
the promise of a democracy that has no end point, but that must be continuously expanded into a
world of new possibilities and opportunities for keeping justice and hope alive. (p.201)

Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Of Education Summary
In the article "The "Banking" Concept of Education" the author, Paulo Freire, goes through and
describes in great detail on his learning experience called the "banking" concept. The banking
concept of education is when the teacher, who is considered the depositie, goes and deposits their
knowledge into their students. During this article Freire goes and describes his opinion on the
education system and why it might be failing and introduces a new system called the "problem–
posing" which he believes will solve the failing education system we have now. Paulo Freire was
drawn into education after his years of studying law, philosophy, and psychology of language. Freire
work was mostly on the people living in the urban and rural areas of Brazil.

Pedagogy Of The Oppressed By Paulo Freire
Paulo Freire is definitely a major contribution to education; he was the author of a book called
pedagogy of the oppressed which, is a major influence to this article. Freire was a man who taught
education theory at the Catholic University of Sao Paulo, and also worked in adult education; he
also taught throughout Europe, the united states, and Chile. In this piece of his writing, Freire
focuses on the correlation between students and teachers. He talks about how this relationship is
handled incorrectly, using what he calls, the banking concept of Education. This concept consists of
the teacher simply depositing information into a student in a very lifeless manner, similarly to how a
person would deposit money into a bank account. Freire argues that students are seen as objects
rather than humans; the fact that students are viewed this way, really limits their creativity and
reduces their sense of individualism. I concur with Freire; a lack of creativity can reduce future
innovation. Reducing innovation would lead to a halt in progress regarding various aspects of
society. Freire goes on to introduce the concept of problem posing education. (Freire.248) This idea
allows student to be treated more like actual humans, rather than simple containers who must absorb
meaningless information. This would create more open minded students, who can relate the
information learned to their reality, and put that knowledge to use. There is a difference between

to think and reason. Without having the ability to think for yourself, minimizes your creative power.
As students we are forced to believe that what we are being taught by the teachers is accurate.
Throughout Freire's essay, he shows how the students are being deceived of their true education.
Paulo Freire, the author of this marvelous essay, was one of the most influential educators of all
time. "He spent most of his early years working in a poverty–stricken areas, developing methods for
teaching illiterate adults how to read and write and to think critically" (Freire 214). He created
classrooms for teachers and student to be equal in dignity. During Freire's lifetime, he has had a

In the banking concept, the students know nothing. They have empty brains that are waiting to be
filled with knowledge. "The teachers' job is to fill the students with content of his narration, and then
the students are forced to memorize it" (Freire 215). "Four times four is sixteen; the capital of Parά
is Belém" (Freire 216). The students repeat the phrases over and over again, without having real
understanding of what it really means. Narration leads the students into memorizing automatically
what the teacher has stated. The teacher is not graded on how well the students learn information,
but how well they are able to memorize the content. Instead of communicating with each other, the
teachers do all the talking and the students collect the information to be repeated. This is identified
as the banking concept. "Knowledge emerges only through intervention and re–invention, through
the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the
world, and with each other" (Freire 217). On the other hand, the problem–method breaks with the
characteristics of the banking concept. Arguments based on authority are no longer valid. The
students are not the only ones who are being taught. Mutually, the teachers and students become
responsible for their development in which they will

Paulo Freire Research Paper
Introduction Paulo Freire was born in Recife, Brazil in 1921. He became familiar with grief,
suffering; poverty, and hunger during the Great Depression. His social life consisted of playing
stickball or a pickup game of football with less privileged children. He learned a lot from those
childhood experiences, which later contributed to his overwhelming concern for the less privileged.
As a result, Freire constructed an educational viewpoint, which focused on aiding the illiterate.
Educational Background While Freire's upbringing was less than ideal, it did not keep him from
pursuing his dream of developing way to aid in the educational development of under privileged
children and adults. In pursuit of his dream, Freire enrolled in law ... Show more content on

In Brazil during that time, it was required for voters to be able to read and comprehend the ballots in
order for them to vote in Presidential elections. During Freire's time at the State of Pernambuco, he

1961, Freire was privileged to be appointed Director of the Cultural Extension of Recife University.
The following year Freire had his first opportunity for testing and application of his educational
theories, when 300 under privileged adults were taught to read and write within a short period of 45
days. As a result, Brazilian government sought to create thousands of locations in which Freire's
theories could be applied, therefore strengthening the literacy of the nation. However, a military
coup put an end to their efforts in 1964. Freire was imprisoned for 70 days after being viewed as a
traitor following the coup. After his release, Freire fled to Bolivia. Following his time in Bolivia,
Freire began his work in Chile, where he stayed for five years. During his time in Chile, Freire
worked for the Christian Democratic Agrarian Reform movement and the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations. While working with the aforementioned organizations, Freire
composed his first book, Education as the Practice of Freedom, which published in 1967. The

The Teaching Profession : A Revolutionary Type Of Curriculum
The teaching profession is perceived in general as being worthy of esteem or respect. It may come
as a shock to some idealists, or those who regard the entire education system as an environment that
is free of flaws and suspicion, that some individuals working within its premises who are supposed
to be upright and model citizens may lead others to think twice before considering the former as
worthy of the people's trust. This is why many regarded the late Paulo Freire as one of the widely
known and esteemed critics due to his contributions in the concepts of education. This research
focused on two important theories formulated by Freire: banking education which represents
traditional models, and problem–posing education which offers a revolutionary type of curriculum.
Based on the aforementioned concepts, the thesis of this paper argued that students learn more
effectively with problem–posing education. Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire was the
man behind the concept of problem–posing education. The concept first came to life from his
famous book Pedagody of the Oppressed was successfully completed in the year 1968. This was
later translated in English during th years 1970 in the United States and 1972 in Britain (Coben 64).
What drove his passion to pursue this model were the prevailing issues of poverty and lack of proper
education resulting from the former. Albeit Freire's methodology initially targeted specific
disadvantaged, minority areas in the United

The Work Of Brameld, Horton, And Freire
Names associated with Social Reconstructionism include, among others, Theodore Brameld, Myles
Horton, Morris R. Mitchel, William O. Stanley, Paulo Freire, Ismail Hakki Tonguch, Neil Postman,
and Charles Weingartner. Each of these educational philosophers have greatly shaped the
reconstruction ideologies; however, for the purpose of this paper, it was considered to analyze the
work of Brameld, Horton, and Freire. Theodore Brameld (1904 – 1987) is considered to be the
founder of the social reconstruction movement. The Brameld 's ideas to understand human condition
were nurtured by thinkers such as Freud and Marx, as well as by sociologists such as W. L. Warner
(Thomas, 1999). Brameld 's ideologies were conceived through a curriculum experiment conducted
in a rural high school in Minnesota during 1944 to 1945 (Stone, 1995). In this experiment, called the
Floodwood Project, Brameld cooperatively participated with this high school 's students and
teachers to answer this question: "What kind of a society do we, as young citizens, want to build for
tomorrow". The students, who participated in this study, drew characteristics of an ideal society by
working from their expectations and experiences about what a good society should provide.
Brameld developed during the next two decades the outcomes in sight of: 1) determine values
through an inductive approach, 2) social policy could be understood under the consensus of the
learning group, 3) indoctrinaction could be addressed by

Diversity And Social Justice By Paulo Freire
Diversity and Social Justice
"Education is that terrain where power and politics are given fundamental expression, since it is
where meaning, desire, language. and values engage and respond to the deeper beliefs about every
nature of what it means to be human, to dream, and to name and struggle for a particular future and
way of life" (Freire, 1985). Education gives people the opportunity to take part in a reflective
process and find solutions to existing societal problems. Over the course program, I have developed
a deeper understanding of adult education and literacy specifically among the underserved
population. My perceptions of adult literacy have changed from merely engaging learners with the
text to a deeper understanding of what it means to be a literate adult. Why a focus on adult literacy
and education?
According to Paulo Freire, "no one elects to be illiterate. One is illiterate because of objective
conditions. In certain circumstances, the illiterate man is the man who does not need to read. In
other circumstances, he is the one to whom the right to read was denied" (Freire, 1985 p.13).
According to Freire's argument, it is suffice to say that as an individual or leaner perhaps, being
literate is not an individual 's choice. As an adult educator aspiring to work with underserved
populations among them the Turkana community in northern Kenya, understanding the root causes
of illiteracy and overall low rates of enrolments in adult education programs is crucial

Paulo Freire Response Summary

  • 1. Paulo Freire Response Summary Response #1 Paulo Freire says, "The student records, memorizes, and repeats these phrases without perceiving what four times four really means." A student only grasps what the teacher has taught them. An example of my own would be in English class when we learn about grammar rules and pun cation. We learned about the grammar rules and how they could affect your paper if you do did not know them. We never actually learned what they meant. A problem posing class in math would be the teacher and student trying to come up with a way that the student can understand how to do problems. Also, the student asking the teacher questions about different ways they could solve the problem successfully. An authentic form of thought and action is when a student ... • 5. Analysis Of Paulo Freire 's ' The Pedogogy Of The Oppressed ' In this reading from the book "THE PEDOGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED", the author Paulo Freire tackles three various types of educational styles and their direct influence on the student and the society. The liberation teaching style, the narrative technique, and the banking style of teaching. As the title suggests, there are two educational styles directed to the oppressed and the oppressor. These are; the banking and the narrative educational style. Paulo Freire in a very persuasive way argues, the only way to transform people 's lives as a teacher is the use of the liberation approach where students are giving the freedom to express themselves and communicate with the teacher to help the students understand the methods used in teaching. This helps students interact, ask questions and solve problems with both their peers and the teacher. According to Pianta, "Positive student– teacher relationships are characterized by open communication, as well as emotional and academic support that exist between students and teachers". The other approach is the narrative and the banking techniques of teaching. These approaches make students not think critically and the author points out how useless it is for students. Paulo Freire talks further and explains the narrative approach to teaching. In the narrative style, it is seen by the reader that the student is a container to be filled with information and to regurgitate back to the teacher at the student's request without knowing the ... • 9. Paulo Freire Essay The Private Liberation Paulo Freire introduces the idea of a "problem–posing" education system in his book The Pedagogy of the Oppressed, which offers a highly effective alternative to the traditional method of memorizing facts that he deems the "banking" concept of education. Problem posing allows individuals to expand their own thoughts, ideas, and opinions through open discussion in a classroom setting. I went through such an experience senior year in my Comparative Government class, which focused on different governments along with the key social and economic issues they face. While many may argue that the "banking" concept has some value in certain issues, the alternative in problem–posing offers a broader experience in which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The subject of government is engrained in peoples' minds as being a "history subject" but the class showed that in reality it is a living, changing, and expanding subject. Freire describes this loss of meaning in the first page when he says "...Contents which are detached from reality, disconnected from totality that engendered them and could give them significance. Words are emptied of their concreteness and become a hollow, alienated, and alienating verbosity" (318). A "banking" education class would have had students sitting in straight rows staring at the white board fiercely copying every single detail that the teacher wrote down about each of the governments, and in the minds of the students these would be concrete unchanging situations. If someone were to come into a discussion that the class was having, while wearing a blindfold, it would be a difficult task to identify the instructor of the course because each student had a new and different perspective on the article. The teacher, although presumed to have more knowledge than all of us as students, never exerted his own thoughts and ideas as authoritative and absolute but offered ideas and perspective the same way that each student brought their own opinions to the table. The focus was for each student to foster his or her analytical skills, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Poverty And Poverty The process of globalization has created a borderless world through the free flow of knowledge and materials and mobility of people and making it become a global village (Andleeb, 2014). According to Rouse (n.d.), he mentioned that "globalization is the process in which people, ideas, and goods spread throughout the world, spurring more interaction and integration between the world's cultures, governments, and economics." However, the world virtually looks like the broken mirror, between rich and poor, powerful and powerless, strong and weak. This situation has affected many different parts of the society, such as education, health, finance and economy. And today it has already become the different picture as we have imagined. While there is no poverty in New Zealand based on Third World standards, there are real concerns about inadequate living conditions, particularly for a significant proportion of children (Wilkinson and Jeram, 2016). In 2008, 237,000 New Zealand children are living in poverty. It means one of five kids in New Zealand lives in poverty, which is about 22 percent (Every Child Counts, 2010). According to UNICEF (n.d.) data, it shows that 295,000 NZ children have spent their childhood in poor condition, which is about 28 percent. UNICEF (n.d.) also defines poverty as that "child poverty occurs when children are being deprived of the material, spiritual and emotional resources needed to survive, develop and thrive". These children could not have equal rights to receive health care or good standard living in the society, such as obtaining an opportunity of education in New Zealand. What's more, Human Rights Commission (2010) also points out that "education is essential for the development of human potential, enjoyment of the full range of human rights and respect for the rights of others." Training could help adults and children staying far away from poverty. The right to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Critical Literacy Essay Premise for Critical Literacy Critical Literacy has many different forms, and can be very different depending on which classroom it is taking place in. The basic premise that I acquired from researching critical literacy is that it requires the literate consumers of the text to adopt a critical questioning approach (Critical Literacy, 2015). Critical Literacy is forming an individual opinion on a topic that isn't only superficial, but also in depth and meaningful. Being critically literate isn't about attaining literacy for the purpose of reading letters on a page, it is to read the words on the page and become engaged in a discussion formulating opinions and expressing ideas openly. Becoming critically literate means that an individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A couple of them are Paulo Freire, Allen Luke, Henry Giroux, and Joe Kincheloe. Many of them share the same beliefs about this topic, but with a different viewpoint. Paulo Freire was a twentieth– century Brazilian educator. He was born September 19, 1921 and died May 2, 1997. Freire was a leading advocate for critical pedagogy, and contributed to the philosophy of education from a more classical approach such as Plato and modern Marxist. Freire believed in a 'banking method' which is compared to students. He viewed students as empty bank accounts waiting to be filled by the teacher. According to Freire, by filling students with this new knowledge it transforms them into receiving objects (Paulo Freire, Wiki). Paulo Freire believed that Critical thinking was not a one– way development, not "something done for students or to them" for their own good (Freire, 1989, 34). Freire's pedagogy focused on writing, reading, and things based around the student's life, and not repetitive lecturing. One of Freire's most stressed phrases, I believe, is "reading the world." • 21. The Importance Of Teaching In Education Introduction Education is about in–parting knowledge based on one's belief, truth and justification with the purpose of surviving in this changing world. Highly educated people are well recognized and given high reputation in the society. Hence, teaching is a process of sharing information between the teacher and students in a positive, caring, changing and stress free environment where new knowledge must be constructed and tested through student – teacher interaction using different strategies so that children could master knowledge and skills of desired fields including values, ethics, and other social knowledge. To fulfill this purpose, teachers should be active, forward thinking, energetic, knowledgeable, sincere and punctual for changing one's truth, belief and justification. To satisfy these educational needs, learning should be a fun mechanism for students in which they enjoy by responding, interacting, socializing, inventing, sharing, discovering and deciding about knowledge, skills, values, ethics and discipline by expressing a permanent change in behaviour. As learning is defined as a permanent change in behaviour, it is teacher's interest to consider teaching as a personal challenge in which students are diverted to a more progressive learning environment where they make their own judgment based on what they experience with exposure to real life like activities. With this as teacher's interest in the field, it is a sensation for them to focus on the whole child ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Paulo Freire: The Dehumanization Of Oppression According to Paulo Freire, (2000) "Dehumanization is not a given destiny but the result of an unjust order that engenders violence in the oppressors, which in turn dehumanizes the oppressed" (p, 44). This quote is interesting to me because it is true that making someone less human doesn't necessarily happen to a person. It stems from unfair treatment done by the oppressors. Which makes that person become oppressed by their oppressors. I don't know anyone who automatically becomes oppressed because some sort of action would have to be done to that person to change him into an animal or inhuman. Another quote I like Freire states, for the oppressors, (2000) "Human beings refers only to themselves; other people are things" (p. 57). The reason ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Freire, "Dehumanization marks not only those whose humanity has been stolen, but also those who have stolen it" (p. 44). Humanization is to become a human and not an object. I know that I have been dehumanized through the European way of life. I only speak and write English even though it wasn't forced on to me. The reason why I choose to speak and write English is because I see that without it I won't be able to go to school or even be successful in school. I've been reduced to being depended on the Anglo for my survival and that is scary because I'm not human. So to be human again I need to be humanized by understanding that I lost my language and culture. I need to restore my identity as a Navajo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Paulo Freire After reading Paulo Freire text on "the 'banking' concept of education", it made me recall my situation in primary and secondary school as a child where we will all sit in class and "listen meekly" (Freire, 216;216) and we were filled with fear whenever we were around those who taught us (respect). This made me to see why Freire was so bold about this "concept" (Freire, 216). He sees this concept as the necessary evil this is because it causes division in the society between the teacher and the student. This is so because the teachers opinion of the student is that the student knows nothing. In this essay I will be addressing both sides of the argument if the "banking" concept is has value as a concept and whether it should be used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And no military ruler would want to see (his objects) those who he or she is ruling usurp his or her power. And therefore the dictator will do anything to oppress those who he is ruling. But in recent times Freire position will not hold because just as Freire chose not to be oppressed by such a system of education that is how other people behave. What I mean here is that it's the person that chooses to stay oppressed and we as an individual have the ability to make choices and we can either accept what they deposit or reject it. "The 'banking' concept of education" (Freire, 216) cannot be perceived as evil, this is because it is individuals who are trained to teach lesser minds such as students and guide them into the world and also in the real world everything that has a bad side also has a good side. Students don't know everything and that is why "The 'Banking' Concept" (Freire, 216) is a good concept because students need to be taught and molded into functioning members of society and that could not possibly be done without being taught and molded in a classroom by professionals. Another reason Freire statement is false is the issue of time. Nobody would want to spend a long period of time going to school or trying to acquire education where in some areas it is very expensive. Under the "banking concept"(Freire, 216) everything is properly laid out to mirror the changes in society and this planning saves time and this enables the teacher to be able to cover more areas because a schedule is followed. Teachers aren't employed because they know better than their student but if this is the case they would be working somewhere else instead of teaching. • 33. Speech On The Oppressed By Paulo Freire Mohamad Afiq Md Daud WR115 Conversation Plan In Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire describes about what the education system supposedly need to be. He critiques that the education during his era is almost as similar as dictatorship. In this style of education, teacher has the superiority over their students. The teacher is the one who know everything, while the students are considered to know nothing, and that is absolutely unfair towards the students because they do not have the chance to "learning". Furthermore, based on Kirp 's excerpt entitled 'Make School a Democracy ', he reveals the solution towards the education system problem during Freire 's era. The solution is also known as Escuela Nueva (New School) model. Hence, what do I realize is the education is a process of teaching and learning between the teacher and the students. An effective education system leads the students in becoming a person with a good thinking skills who able to understand the facts rather than memorizing it. Based on what I have read, I recognized that both Freire and Kirp have a similar main idea in fighting for the education rights. They suggest that education needs to be an interactive learning. Both teacher and students need to communicate by making discussion or sharing opinions; this theory is also called as problem–posing education. For example, a teacher is posing a question for the students, and he or she has already prepared the answer; however, the students independently ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Paulo Freire: Pedagogue Essay Throughout history, many men and women have made important contributions to the world of education. Amongst these is the Brazilian scholar Paulo Freire, whose influences on the world have been both broad and deep. A true believer in Marxist theory, his central ideas regarding education revolve around the concept that the experience and learning process of education are more important than the "facts" or concepts that are being taught. Consequently, traditional teaching methods (known as "Banking") train students to be passive, unthinking, and subservient to their superiors; instead, teachers should "free" their students by employing "problem–posing" techniques, where teachers not only present concepts for students to analyse, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He saw education (specifically, literacy) not merely as a means of transferring information as if one were filling a box, but instead as a means of liberation and revolution, that instruction should teach students how to think, not what to think, and give them the power to call into question the facts of everyday life (Gibson). In Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, he suggests that the common people are constantly oppressed and forced to become submissive, and that in turn, they will oppress others in a similar fashion. Traditional education is one of the first vehicles for this cycle of oppression and submission, and therefore Freire insists that educators must stimulate students to think through acceptance and equality; that a teacher "is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach authority must be on the side of freedom". According to Freire, it is critical that this student–teacher equality exist in order for a student to develop his or her ability to think individually. In contrast to Freire's ideal ... • 41. Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Of Education the Brazilian ideologist Paulo Freire has both challenged and subsequently shaped the modern concept of education as well as the nature of the student–teacher relationship with his radical ideas. In his essay "The 'Banking' Concept of Education", Freire fervently deconstructs the flaw within the education system and offers a solution which he believes mediates the teacher–student imbalance. The detrimental facet of academic institutions, Freire argues, is the "oppressive depositing" of information by teachers into students. He goes on to explain that such a system merely institutionalizes a one way "transaction" in which the teacher is the only true benefiter. • 45. The Problem Posing By Paulo Freire Classroom experiences are like polyatomic ions: some are positive while others are negative. While the majority of the experiences at the West Genesee School District have been positive, I can recollect one experience that was particularly negative. During the duration of my Advanced Placement global history course, I was the subject in a class, that, by definition, would be closer to the "problem–posing" classroom that Paulo Freire describes in his piece "The 'Banking' Concept of Education". In his works, Paulo Freire asserts that the "problem–posing education makes them [the students] critical thinkers" (Freire 221). As Freire describes, a class that implements the problem– posing policy is one in which students are to become critical thinkers. Freire would have been ecstatic that other educators carried out his ideas in their own "problem–posing" classroom. My teacher me made it unequivocal that this class was going to challenge the way we analyzed and understood history. The teacher continued to describe the role of the student in the classroom; the educator expected the pupil to analyze readings and argue about what the pupil deemed to be the most important concepts presented. Regardless of the content, Egyptian hieroglyphics or Genghis Kahn, while the students studied history, the teacher insisted that the students evaluated the relationships between the causes, effects, and relevance of various topics throughout the course. • 49. Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Of Education Summary Paulo Freire raises ideas and issues with the contemporary education system in his "The 'Banking' Concept of Education." He analogizes the traditional copy notes, memorize, and regurgitate information to the modern–day banking systems. He writes early on in this work, "Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor." "This is the 'banking' concept of education" (216). Freire puts the way most classes are taught as of late in a great perspective. He also gives reasonable solutions to the many disputes of the current and age old teacher–student atmosphere. Though throughout the writing, Freire expresses his ideas and opinions in a logical and readable manner, no reader would be able to understand all of his intricacies and anecdotes included. While most would delve into the understood, looking into the foggy and misunderstood could be much more freeing. Whilst explaining a true 'banking' concept scenario, Freire includes a bit about culture circles in Chile and the interaction between an "educator" and a "peasant." The peasant gives an insightful answer that is very unexpected about culture and the world. Alvarez English 1A 21 March 2018 Freire and the Dead Poets Society Paulo Freire, author of the chapter excerpt "The 'Banking' Concept of Education" written in 1968, believed that the education system in place was flawed and this corresponded with the capitalistic system of society. Paulo Freire' s preferred method of education is the problem–posing method. This method students and teachers are liberated from the oppression of the power structure. Horace Mann's Pedagogy Theory Of Education Horace Mann was the first to advocate for public education, because of his upbringing, he strongly believed that education "is the great equalizer of the conditions of men" by Horace Mann. He was the founder of Pedagogy, as well as the "Common School Movement", and founded the "Common School Journal" as well. He led a campaign offering universal education: by which he meant that all children regardless of race, religion, and socioeconomic background should receive an education. He also stated that this education be taught by trained professionals (teachers) and that all education be free of religious influence, and all to be found by the community which will benefit from its children's education in the future. His Pedagogy theory of education is to explore and discover. To awaken the curiosity in children for children to be able to explore and find their passion. With that passion, they can be important drivers of the socio–economic environment that surrounds them directly and indirectly. John Dewey Dewey background of philosopher, psychologist and educator brings a lot to light when speaking about education today. His believes in his epistemology theory, that children and educators need to focus on the approach of learning by doing: theory of knowledge = theory of inquiry and /or theory of experimental logic. Pedagogy Of The Oppressed Reader Response to "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" by Paulo Freire In "Pedagogy of the Oppressed", Paulo Freire describes what he calls the "banking concept" of education. He then argues as to why we should not use the banking concept of education as teachers. The banking concept is when a teacher believes they are a genius on his or her content subject and treats the children's minds as banks. The teacher just deposits his or her knowledge into the children's minds without posing any real challenges or chance for student growth. Freire says, "Narration...leads the students to memorize mechanically the narrated account...it turns them into "containers" ...to be "filled" by the teachers" (Freire 1). "The Banking Concept of Education" from Pedagogy of the Oppressed poses the question about the education system and how teachers are narrators and students are recorders. In his essay he discusses how the students – who he refers to as containers – receive their information from teachers. However, the teachers never communicate with their subordinates. The idea of "banking" suggests that students are only receiving, memorizing and receiving facts from the "depositor" which made the students "depositories." The main ideas drawn from this article are related to education, knowledge and communication. In his essay, Paulo Freire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Can you remember more than four phone numbers and more than three immediate family members birthdays without using any technology? If you cannot answer those simple questions than maybe you should reconsider on working on your memorization side of your brain. Joshua Foer, the author of The End of Remembering, and Paulo Freire, author of The "Banking" Concept of Education, both write about how important memory is in the world today. In Foer's passage he states that before paper, books, and modern technology people were expected to remember any piece of information that was given to them. Now people rely on anything that could record information so they would not have to remember it or worry about forgetting. He believes that technology is running our memory. However in Freire's passage he states that memorizing decontextualizes and is unrelated to present conditions, but memory can concrete conditions of our daily lives. The importance of memory and its functions in the world today is that it lets a person find self–identity, prevents shallow base of knowledge, and sets values. Memory provides a sense of personal identity. Memories that were made from the past create the person that they have become today. It helps to ground judgments and with reasoning. The Year Of Wonders By Geraldine Brooks Oppression is defined as, "the exercise of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner"(dictionary.com), and is found all around the world. There is essentially two parts to oppression: the oppressor, who is demonstrating his power by displaying cruelty towards the second part of oppression, the oppressed. The oppressed take part in offenses made by the oppressor, that usually contain a cruel, and unfair burden towards them. The world has demonstrated this profound relationship since human history first began, not only in their way of life, but in literature. For example, Geraldine Brooks, displays the oppressors, in her novel The Year of Wonders, by implicating strong men, and a powerful family; while the oppressed are ... In the novel, Peeta says, "Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to... to show the Capitol they don't own me. That I'm more than just a piece in their games"(Collins 142). He has already reflected the lack of liberation in Panem, and is now trying to envision a way to fix it. This needs to be the mentality of everybody in Panem. Cutting out oppression, and increasing fellowship, liberation, and solidarity, will disembody the life they are living now, and produce an improved way of life for everybody in Panem. In his novel, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire also says, "It is only when the oppressed find the oppressor out and become involved in the organized struggle for liberation that they begin to believe in themselves. • 77. Paulo Freire : The Philosophy Of Education The world would be a better place if every child had the opportunity to an education. Education is an extremely vital part of life. Without an education, people would live a life of ignorance and close–mindedness. It helps society function and behaves civilized. Education is a philosophy which is the study of examining and thinking about questionable ethical problems and accepted certainties. People study philosophy to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world they live in and the relationships to the world and to each other. Paulo Freire was a man who was willing to fight the education system by creating Critical Pedagogy and by the changing the world with his idea. It was a social movement and philosophy of education that developed and applied concepts from critical theory and related theories to the field of education and the study of culture. Paulo Freire was an idealist whose purpose was to build critical consciousness in literacy campaigns, especially in Grenada. Paulo Freire was one of the best influential educators of the world of the 20th century. He was born on September 19, 1921, in the port city of Recife, the capital of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, which was one of the poorest regions in the country. Freire was born into a middle–class family but with the global crisis of 1929, his family would endure poverty and hunger. Throughout the first couple weeks of school, I have read and reflected on some readings and fragments that have led my train of thought develop analytical ideas. Although, one universal idea was brought to my attention, which is the concept of perspective. Around the globe, perspectives have been and are being shaped by influences in both hand sides simultaneously. Viewpoints are established and changed in both ways in the two reading Ways of Seeing by John Berger and Banking Concepts of Education by Paulo Freire. While the first half of Ways of Seeing consists of possible positive aspects of the worlds perspective, the second half consists of the negative effects that the influences of the world have on perspectives. Her clothes are depicted more informal and loose and she is even topless in the last two images. This shows how man has changed their point of view about women to a sexual perspective. It demonstrates how man changed the meaning of art to benefit themselves by pleasing their own sexual desires. This can also be seen in other painting techniques such as oil paintings. Since oil paintings utilizes advance techniques, they could show more depth and details in what they portrayed. Those who were identified as wealthy had the ease to take control over the breakthrough of art by inputting textures to an object such as clothes to make them seem luxurious. The same could be seen in landscape drawings/ paintings. Berger goes on to state that before artists' interests in ecology for envious purposes, "nature was not thought of as the object of the activities of capitalism; rather it was thought of as the arena in which capitalism and social life and each individual life had its being", as humans used and enjoyed the beauty of nature and its landscapes for what it is. • 85. Pedagogy Of The Oppressed By Paulo Freire Paulo Freire's book Pedagogy of the Oppressed analyzes the issues of different styles and techniques of teaching. Whether it be at school, home, or by a parent education can be pushed upon you in different forms. These manners of education can treat people as objects; use forms of paternalism due to authority over someone, and restrict people from having freedom and responsibilities. One of the mechanisms Freire talks about is banking education: Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqués and makes deposits, which the students patiently receive, memorize and repeat. This is the "banking" concept of education, in which the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits. Ever since I can remember I always noticed I would be in classes in school that portrayed banking education in some form. In this essay, I will talk about my college history class and how it functions, the perspective I have about my teacher, and how I'm able to pass the class. Last fall semester is when I started college here at Del Mar. I had only enrolled in three classes, and being how I was only a freshman starting my first semester in a whole new environment, I wanted to make sure I was taking things slow. Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Of Education Loan Pham Lynette Vrooman English 1C 10/2/ 2017 Analysis of ''Banking Concept of Education" People begin their education from day one till the day they die. Therefore, every day, we always learn new things in different ways such as education, news, magazine, internet, etc. An ideologist, Paulo Freire, in his narrative essay, "The Banking Concept of Education," present the modern concept of and approaches to education. Freire's purpose is to compare the two educational systems, the "banking concept" and the "problem–posing concept". Throughout his essay, he argues strongly to support his creative own and make his readers believe that problem–posing education is more efficient than the banking education. According to the "The Banking Concept of Education" by Paulo Freire, I believe that Freire does a good job of showing the reader his idea about education. He makes the reader think about him/herself by the way he shows the fact obvious in their life. He hopes the reader know the depth of difference between the banking system and the problem–posing system. Therefore, this essay is talking about learning can only be achieved by communication with others and this can't be achieved through the banking concept. Freire believed that the banking concept of education is that of a relationship of an oppressor and the oppressed, stating banking "dehumanizes students and serves the interest of those who oppress them" (Freire 62). He also refers to the banking concept as an education which holds emphasizes with memorization, facts, formula, and disciple on the students' part, while the teacher's narration, that is detached from reality, becomes "hollow, alienated, and alienating verbosity" for the students (Freire 63). Mark Edmundson And Paulo Freire Although Mark Edmundson and Paulo Freire believe that a higher form of education such as, a stronger teaching ethics, deeper understanding, and more passionate students is needed to correct the issues at hand. In their essay they both adopt a different style to present tis idea. Paulo Freire wants the individual to form himself rather than be formed. To this end, he proposes that educational topics or opportunities be taken from the daily experience the individual constantly encounters and avoid the current educational pitfall of resorting to artificial experiences. While, Edmundson is trying to show how education has change due to the leak of consumerism into universities. Edmundson acknowledge his own conformity and promise to change back to what he thinks will make a good class and challenge his students to think on another level. Paulo Freire dwells on the idea that a teacher's task is to simplify "fill" a student's mind. He describes the banking concept as a habitual learning process where the teachers oppress the knowledge that they considered important on the student by supplying the student with the material and not given them the opportunity to question the material presented. • 101. The Banking Concept Of Education By Paulo Freire According to Paulo Freire in The "Banking" Concept of Education, the "narrative" nature of the teacher–student correspondence is toxic and counterproductive in any form (Freire 259). To capture this idea, Freire makes education synonymous with a teacher making deposits into the mind of a student, but "the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits" (Freire 260). Therefore, interpretation and creativity are commodities that do not reach the surface of a student's work or thoughts. A personal example of such a loss in experience comes directly from my freshman high school English class, and said experience strongly represents a "banking" atmosphere. In contrast, a "problem–posing" classroom would inspire original thought and energetic conversation. All in all, the teacher–student relationship is a critical focal point in terms of whether or not a classroom is successful. Paulo Freire recognizes the practice of roles that "mirror oppressive society" by noting the overwhelming social acceptance that "the teacher is the Subject of the learning process, while the pupils are mere objects", utterly halting any sort of independent or creative thinking from a student (Freire 261). Suddenly, the outlook of having no dialogue between a teacher and student, only opinionated information transference, eliminates the possibility for innovation. • 105. Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Of Education Paulo Freire believes that the world is primarily dominated by the "banking" concept in regards to education. Under the "banking" concept, Freire describes the relationship between students and teachers as "involv[ing] a narrating Subject (the teacher) and patient, listening objects (the students)" (216). Freire later goes on to symbolize students as empty receptacles awaiting teachers to dump their knowledge freely to fill the empty spaces. Memorization, obedience, oppression, and dominance all describe the inner workings of the "banking" concept. Students lose their ability to become cogitative thinkers as they memorize lectures, never speak their voice or dissent to teachers, and give all of their freedom to their professors. Students then become slaves to the classroom, and rather than a symbiotic relationship existing between students and teachers, the road is very one way. If Freire were to analyze ... This points readers in the direction that the "banking" concept molds students to be mindless receptacles awaiting dumped knowledge; reading then is used to soak in the word count and not the actual meaning behind the piece. In "The 'Banking' Concept of Education," Freire makes an interesting point: "The interests of the oppressors lie in 'changing the consciousness of the oppressed, not the situation which oppresses them'...the more the oppressed can be led to adapt to that situation, the more easily they can be dominated" ... According to writer Neil Patel, it is absolutely required that this "disclaimer" exist in the conclusion as to "[clarify] what [Freire] is saying so [the reader takes] away the right message" (Neil 4). Freire uses this disclaimer to answer the popular question associated with conclusions: so what? To Freire, the main message of his essay is to engage in a "problem–posing" atmosphere, and his "so what?" is that students today are losing a vital opportunity to learn by not actively trying to change the ways of education. • 113. Paulo Freire In novel, chapter 2 of Pedagogy of The Oppressed written by Paulo Freire we are introduced to two educational concepts. Freire refers to the concepts as the banking concept and problem–posing concept. The banking concept is the assumption that the teacher controls and "fills" students with selected information. Freire believes " It is the people themselves who are filled away through lack of creativity, transformation, and knowledge in this misguided system" (Freire 1). On the other hand Freire believes that the soulution to the education system is problem–posing. This concept encourgaes student dialogue, creativity, and discovery. Meaning that the student is free and in control of his education. I believe Freire decribition of the banking concept is unconsintent. A teacher goal is not to control and "fill" students with memorization. Instead, the goal is to expand a student mind with critical information that sometimes needs memorization such as math equations, history, science, and vocabulary. • 121. Analysis Of Paulo Freire 's ' The Banking Theory ' Concept... In the essay "The 'Banking' Concept of Education," Paulo Freire creates the argument that teachers simply deposit knowledge into students and the students then only store the deposits, without having any input of their own. He says that "the student records, memorizes, and repeats these phrases without perceiving what four times four really means...." (318). "The teacher teaches and the students are taught;" "the teacher chooses and enforces his choice, and the students comply;" "the teacher chooses the program content, and the students (who were not consulted) adapt to it." Those are only some of the points made by Freire in the banking theory. Although Freire is talking about education, this theory can also be applied to modern day advertisement. Companies plaster advertisements anywhere they can, from billboards to television screens, telling viewers what they need to look like, act like, be like, and talk like, while the viewers simply take in that information and conform to it. In this Sisley advertisement, two models are snorting what would be expected to be cocaine, but instead it is a white dress. The words "Fashion Junkie" are printed underneath the brand name. The bright white of the dress creates a contrast with the pitch black background, creating an atmosphere of darkness. The Ideologies Put Forth By Paulo Freire The ideologies put forth by Paulo Freire including liberation education, pedagogy of the oppressed, inequality and pedagogy of possibility gives educators hope. These are the educators who are dedicated to bring about positive change in education and by extension society. Freire's contribution to education through his research and theories resonates with Trinbagonian educators as it encompasses issues of slavery, colonialism, post colonialism social mobility and democracy. Furthermore, Freire's ontology is grounded in comprehensive philosophical underpinnings including that of John Dewey and Jean Piaget. Their contributions have shaped education internationally as well as locally. Thus, the authors' critique of Freire's work in an attempt to restructure his theories is a worthwhile analysis and allows for self–reflection, critical thinking and the assurance of hope, in that, if education does nothing else, it must inspire hope in reference to the school of pragmatism. Such an educational philosophy in the words to Giroux (2007), points to a future in which democratic practices create the conditions for each generation of youth to struggle anew to sustain the promise of a democracy that has no end point, but that must be continuously expanded into a world of new possibilities and opportunities for keeping justice and hope alive. Pedagogy Of The Oppressed By Paulo Freire Paulo Freire is definitely a major contribution to education; he was the author of a book called pedagogy of the oppressed which, is a major influence to this article. Freire was a man who taught education theory at the Catholic University of Sao Paulo, and also worked in adult education; he also taught throughout Europe, the united states, and Chile. In this piece of his writing, Freire focuses on the correlation between students and teachers. He talks about how this relationship is handled incorrectly, using what he calls, the banking concept of Education. This concept consists of the teacher simply depositing information into a student in a very lifeless manner, similarly to how a person would deposit money into a bank account. Freire argues that students are seen as objects rather than humans; the fact that students are viewed this way, really limits their creativity and reduces their sense of individualism. I concur with Freire; a lack of creativity can reduce future innovation. Reducing innovation would lead to a halt in progress regarding various aspects of society. Freire goes on to introduce the concept of problem posing education. (Freire.248) This idea allows student to be treated more like actual humans, rather than simple containers who must absorb meaningless information. This would create more open minded students, who can relate the information learned to their reality, and put that knowledge to use. There is a difference between collecting ... • 141. Paulo Freire Research Paper Introduction Paulo Freire was born in Recife, Brazil in 1921. He became familiar with grief, suffering; poverty, and hunger during the Great Depression. His social life consisted of playing stickball or a pickup game of football with less privileged children. He learned a lot from those childhood experiences, which later contributed to his overwhelming concern for the less privileged. As a result, Freire constructed an educational viewpoint, which focused on aiding the illiterate. Educational Background While Freire's upbringing was less than ideal, it did not keep him from pursuing his dream of developing way to aid in the educational development of under privileged children and adults. In pursuit of his dream, Freire enrolled in law ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Brazil during that time, it was required for voters to be able to read and comprehend the ballots in order for them to vote in Presidential elections. During Freire's time at the State of Pernambuco, he began adopt a non–orthodox form of what one could consider liberation theology. Once again, in 1961, Freire was privileged to be appointed Director of the Cultural Extension of Recife University. The following year Freire had his first opportunity for testing and application of his educational theories, when 300 under privileged adults were taught to read and write within a short period of 45 days. As a result, Brazilian government sought to create thousands of locations in which Freire's theories could be applied, therefore strengthening the literacy of the nation. However, a military coup put an end to their efforts in 1964. Freire was imprisoned for 70 days after being viewed as a traitor following the coup. After his release, Freire fled to Bolivia. Following his time in Bolivia, Freire began his work in Chile, where he stayed for five years. During his time in Chile, Freire worked for the Christian Democratic Agrarian Reform movement and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. While working with the aforementioned organizations, Freire composed his first book, Education as the Practice of Freedom, which published in 1967. The following year, Freire ... • 145. The Teaching Profession : A Revolutionary Type Of Curriculum The teaching profession is perceived in general as being worthy of esteem or respect. It may come as a shock to some idealists, or those who regard the entire education system as an environment that is free of flaws and suspicion, that some individuals working within its premises who are supposed to be upright and model citizens may lead others to think twice before considering the former as worthy of the people's trust. This is why many regarded the late Paulo Freire as one of the widely known and esteemed critics due to his contributions in the concepts of education. This research focused on two important theories formulated by Freire: banking education which represents traditional models, and problem–posing education which offers a revolutionary type of curriculum. Based on the aforementioned concepts, the thesis of this paper argued that students learn more effectively with problem–posing education. Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire was the man behind the concept of problem–posing education. The concept first came to life from his famous book Pedagody of the Oppressed was successfully completed in the year 1968. This was later translated in English during th years 1970 in the United States and 1972 in Britain (Coben 64). What drove his passion to pursue this model were the prevailing issues of poverty and lack of proper education resulting from the former. Albeit Freire's methodology initially targeted specific disadvantaged, minority areas in the United ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 149. The Work Of Brameld, Horton, And Freire Names associated with Social Reconstructionism include, among others, Theodore Brameld, Myles Horton, Morris R. Mitchel, William O. Stanley, Paulo Freire, Ismail Hakki Tonguch, Neil Postman, and Charles Weingartner. Each of these educational philosophers have greatly shaped the reconstruction ideologies; however, for the purpose of this paper, it was considered to analyze the work of Brameld, Horton, and Freire. Theodore Brameld (1904 – 1987) is considered to be the founder of the social reconstruction movement. The Brameld 's ideas to understand human condition were nurtured by thinkers such as Freud and Marx, as well as by sociologists such as W. L. Warner (Thomas, 1999). Brameld 's ideologies were conceived through a curriculum experiment conducted in a rural high school in Minnesota during 1944 to 1945 (Stone, 1995). In this experiment, called the Floodwood Project, Brameld cooperatively participated with this high school 's students and teachers to answer this question: "What kind of a society do we, as young citizens, want to build for tomorrow". The students, who participated in this study, drew characteristics of an ideal society by working from their expectations and experiences about what a good society should provide. Brameld developed during the next two decades the outcomes in sight of: 1) determine values through an inductive approach, 2) social policy could be understood under the consensus of the learning group, 3) indoctrinaction could be addressed by ... • 153. Diversity And Social Justice By Paulo Freire Diversity and Social Justice "Education is that terrain where power and politics are given fundamental expression, since it is where meaning, desire, language. and values engage and respond to the deeper beliefs about every nature of what it means to be human, to dream, and to name and struggle for a particular future and way of life" (Freire, 1985). Education gives people the opportunity to take part in a reflective process and find solutions to existing societal problems. Over the course program, I have developed a deeper understanding of adult education and literacy specifically among the underserved population. My perceptions of adult literacy have changed from merely engaging learners with the text to a deeper understanding of what it means to be a literate adult. Why a focus on adult literacy and education? According to Paulo Freire, "no one elects to be illiterate. One is illiterate because of objective conditions. In certain circumstances, the illiterate man is the man who does not need to read. In other circumstances, he is the one to whom the right to read was denied" (Freire, 1985 p.13). According to Freire's argument, it is suffice to say that as an individual or leaner perhaps, being literate is not an individual 's choice. As an adult educator aspiring to work with underserved populations among them the Turkana community in northern Kenya, understanding the root causes of illiteracy and overall low rates of enrolments in adult education programs is crucial ...
