Athlete Feedback Research
Introduction
Beginners through to elite individual athletes rely on a coach's feedback to help enhance their skill
acquisition and progression, performance and overall player development. Communication and
continual feedback between a player and coach can be vital in order to increase these components.
This review will look at the influence of effective feedback and communication between a coach
and tennis players in an attempt to illustrate its significance in the player's development as well as
their performance. Developing an effective connection with the athlete can be essential in the early
stages of a coach/player relationship, a junior player looks to senior players and coaches as role
models (Defrancesco, Johnson et all, 1997) This early connection ... Show more content on

Vladimir Nabokov's Five-Point Play
Five–Point Play is the ideal buddy to the 2000–2001 Basketball Season. The book is a pass up blow
record of how the Blue Devils developed and developed amid its title run. A considerable measure
of what Coach K stresses in Five–Point Play has particular echoes from his past book. Such critical
lessons as correspondence, trust, aggregate obligation, mindful, and so on are enormous topics that
he re–stresses to the group. Be that as it may, the essential distinction is that in this book, Coach K
takes after the season in sequential request, with depictions of practices and in–diversion
circumstances. There are likewise a few quotes from the players, mentors and staff that are
embedded amid these circumstances that further light up the alternate ... Show more content on

Luckily, the Duke Blue Devils conquered this hindrance and surged towards the National
Championship. Mentor Mike Krzyzewski tries to instruct the 2001 Duke ball group about b–ball, as
well as life as well. By setting cases for the group, Coach demonstrates his players the consequences
of correspondence, trust, care, obligation, and pride, similar focuses that helped them win the
national title. "Mentor K" has a team of capable mentors and players that incorporate Shane Battier,
Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer and some more. I like the way that Coach Krzyzewski set up this
book together, by clarifying each get up and go talk, portraying each group, and giving the points of
interest of each diversion. In spite of the fact that I wouldn't prescribe this book to a Tarheel fan, I
trust that each other ball fan gets an opportunity to peruse Five Point Play. Through the book you
will discover Coach K's plans that drove the group towards their objectives. Likewise the way he
interfaces his players and his own feelings towards the trip in the book is exceptionally

Coach vs Mentor
Mentoring and Coaching: The Roles and Practices
Dr. Norhasni Zainal Abiddin, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia
ABSTRACT Mentoring and coaching are all part of educational training to develop people in the
professions. There are several similarities and differences in the main issues involved in mentoring
and coaching. They are related to the selfdevelopment, professional growth and career development
of the mentee/coachee. In establishing the approaches to be used, care must be taken to ensure that
each person understands the limits or boundaries of the relationship. Indeed, it may be as important
to indicate that there is a way out of the relationship as it is to encourage its development in the first
place. Supervisory approaches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally, it is a popular approach in education and in business. In a recent survey of Fortune 500
companies, 96 percent of executives identified mentoring as an important developmental tool, and
75 percent of them said it had played a key role in their career success (Heinz 2003). A mentor is
identified as someone who teaches the student in a personal and close long–term relationship that
allows critical concentration on the task performance (Brown and Krager 1985; Kirkham 1993).
Before the 1990s, most authors used the word 'supervisor' in reference to a mentor at school with the
meaning of someone who directs or oversees and watches over students so as to maintain order
(Gardiner 1989), but increasingly, we see references to the mentoring of young people entering the
teaching profession. Bullock (1988) was of the opinion that a mentor should establish a good rapport
with his protégés, assess their needs in consultation with other interested and appropriate parties,
and end the mentoring relationship at the appropriate time and in an appropriate manner. Thus, each
mentoring arrangement is unique, and its particular nature will be established according to the
personalities of the two individuals concerned (Mountford 1993). The relationship facilitates
another's personal growth and can also encourage and enable learning in order to maximise the
mentee's potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want
to be (Brown and

Coaching Climate Essay
Evaluation of The Coaching Climate of an Observed Training Session
Context:
I observed a training session of the UCD Trampoline Squad on Wednesday October 8th 2014 from
8:00am to 10:00am in Hall A of the UCD Sports Centre. The session was lead by Head Coach Ryan
Teevan. Each athlete has their own programme and the session was divided into 4 parts – warm ups,
skills & links, routines and conditioning.
Coaching Climate & T.A.R.G.E.T. Framework
I would say that Head Coach Ryan created a positive atmosphere – primarily a mastery climate with
nuances of an ego climate.
T – Task
I would say as a coach Ryan encourages task goal orientation. He focuses on small corrections that
make a big difference. As outlined by McLean, K et al (2012) coaches are motivated by coach and
athlete development and this is very evident in Ryan's case. Ryan has small, achievable goals for
most of his athletes – many people who are just mastering their first routines will just be aiming to
just land them in competition. For the top elite in the group, Dwayne, his goals are more substantial
and more ego based. He is already perfecting his routine for his next competition in 6 ... Show more

However we see examples of a performance climate such as praise often being given in front of the
other athletes and mistakes in routines mean you do double conditioning. Mistakes should not be
grounds for punishment nor should they be "feared". However, Ryan encourages his athletes to
focus and stay cool under pressure often leading by example. Gearity, B. et al (2011) showed that
poor coaches who were disinterested or distracted negatively impacted on their team's performance.
By giving constant verbal cues, Ryan focuses his athletes on putting effort into their skills to achieve
their potential. He is actively trying to lessen the above effect on his

Should College Athletes be Paid? Essay
Should College Athletes be Paid?
Over the past century college athletics have grown more popular than most professional sports.
Most of its popularity is due to a large student body in addition to its Alumni, but nonetheless it has
surpassed professional sports from its monetary success to its fan support. College athletics are also
a very important commodity to Universities around the nation. Next to student's tuition, that's where
the majority of the money comes from. No one is more responsible for bringing in that money more
than the coach and his/her players. In this notion, one would think that such important people should
be paid for a job well done. But this isn't the case. Over the years a question has emerged, should ...

Martinez supports his argument by supplying information from; important figures the sports world
may know (Steve Spurrier), and rules that continue to fuel his argument that college athletes should
be paid. For example, Martinez uses the "amateurism" argument from the NCAA to help explain
why college officials would not allow college athletes to be paid, and to further support his
argument as to why they should be paid.
Martinez also uses opponent's views to help support his. "Opponents of the play for play idea say
that college–athletes should not be paid because through scholarships, they are already being paid"
(Martinez). Using arguments such as this one helps Martinez expand his argument so that when he is
through there are no aspects of his argument left unanswered.
To validate his argument, Martinez uses actual people and guidelines in his article. He uses Steve
Spurrier as an example; "Head coach of the University of Florida, signed a six year contract that will
pay him nearly $2 million per year" (Martinez). Using this information shows that a coach, who is
not more important than a player, is making a ton of money. As opposed to a player, who makes no
money at all and is of more importance. After all, without the players there could be no coaches.
It is a well known fact that college coaches make more than enough money. Just recently,

Coaches Have Talent And Dedication Essay
So many Coaches have talent and dedication for what they do. I 'm proud to play for one that has a
spectacular history of coaching. That coach is Dennis Lorio, who Graduated from LSU (Louisiana
State University) with an economic degree and played baseball. "I love the intensity and the
relationship in football" Coach Lorio explaining with a passionate expression. I can see it in his eyes
that he is very dedicated and hardworking coach. As of now he is 62 years old and still willing to
coach. "It's not the same without coaching. The joy and the sorrow I feel during the season has been
addicted to me. I've been in this game almost all my life and that is a very long time."
From the article of Sports Nola, Nick Kreugar wrote about Dennis Lorio:
He was offensive coordinator at East St. John for the past two years, but resigned for family reasons
last October. He is well known for his time at Thibodaux and led them to the inaugural 5A state
championship in 1991. Lorio also spent time as LSU offensive line coach from 1992–94 and
returned to Thibodaux in 2008 leading the Tigers to a 27–12 record with 5A state quarterfinal
playoff runs in 2008 and 2009. He has a career coaching record of 105–70.
Even tough he lives in New Orleans, he drives an hour for his work every day. In 2013, Coach Lorio
took a challenge by coaching the Morgan City Tigers after he resigned from Thibodaux. He came to
to Morgan City knowing that Morgan city never made it to the playoff over a decade. He has seen

The Career Road Map Assignment Essay
For the career road map assignment, I decided to interview a friend, athlete, coach, and counselor at
lafayette high school. The interview consisted of what his career path has been leading up to where
he currently is in his career. Daniel majored in counselling at UTC in downtown Chattanooga. While
he was in grad school for counselling MA, Daniel worked at a running shoe store named FastBreak
Athletics in Chattanooga. He eventually ended up being a sales rep for the company and travelled to
different events to market/sell different types of running gear at expos or to different storefronts.
But through his connections in the sport industry, he moved into coaching and counselling at
lafayette high school after he got his masters in counselling. I hope to do something of the sort with
a graduate degree in either business administration, or physical education. Daniel told me, "although
the requirements and majors are important for your career, it is super important to network and make
connections with a lot of people. In nowadays society, it is all about who you know that can help
you get your foot in the door. So the first strategy is to make connections. The second strategy is to
be well educated on the subject. The third strategy is to develop good people skills and to relate well
to a lot of people. Fourth is to not get discouraged in not getting many call backs for jobs in my
field. It is an incredibly competitive field to go into. Daniel also began to tell me how

Summary Of Coach Fitz Management Theory
The essay "Coach Fitz Management Theory" was written by Michael Lewis and the stories
mentioned were based on past and present comparisons. Most of the ideologies strictly informed
that the process is essential, and while Fitz talks about winning, it is the desire and not the victory
that is important. There are many examples that refer back to the different statements about winning
versus the process. Valuing the process towards a particular goal and perfecting that process will
provide you with the success desired. On the other hand, the ability to provide the process, which
includes self–motivation and hard work necessary. The different writing techniques used to give off
different perspectives for the reader to understand. The essay mainly intended the reader to
understand the level of entitlement that parents have with a team and the goals/process that must be
met in order to win.
The various approaches to coaching and how much authority parents had depending on how
involved they were. Transitions, such as closers or openers most of the paragraphs cause readers to
be lost in the in the wrong areas and a quick switch of the setting hurt the initial and long–term
meaning of the essay.
A firm belief Coach Fitz has throughout the essay is to win. "You know what I think about second
place? he said. 'Here's what I think about second place.' And he slammed the trophy against the
floor'" (Lewis). This ultimately shows that winning and getting in the first place is a big part

The Effects Of Harsh Coaching Of Young Athletes
Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports all together, but if the
coaches get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. At a young age, children need
discipline in order to put them in the right direction for their futures. This discipline is found in
numerous forms, and one of the most common forms is through sports. David Brooks said, "The
best coaches still live by a code, and they make no apology for demanding that kids live up to it."
(Brooks) Though strict coaching can turn some young children and their parents away from sports, it
can give kids a good role model, teach them discipline, and help them learn to get along with other
people. Parents often have concerns for how coaches treat their young athletes, but most coaches are
the best character role models that a child will have. As David Brooks, author of the article
"Organized Sports Can Benefit Children", says "Coaches have become the leading moral instructors
in America today." (Brooks). Groups like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely to keep
coaches doing their job of creating mature and respectful athletes (Positive). Children need these
positive role models in their lives. Even if a child has great role models as parents, it is even better
to have one outside of the family. A coach can serve as someone that kids should admire, love, and
respect even though they are outside of their family; this will prepare children for their future of
dealing with

Middle School Athletics Staffing Essay
Middle School Athletics Staffing
In the business world, each year is different from the other, same goes for the academic division. It
is a fact that people come and people go for all types of reasons. Change is forever arising,
sometimes for the better or worse. Within the middle school athletics level there are 13 Athletic
Directors (AD) positions and 160 or more coaching positions, dependent on each teams'
participation. AD's and coaches are paid employees of the district. The AD's supervise the coaches at
their individual school buildings or act as a sports liaison within their assigned school. The coaches
simply coach. Many of our coaches have experience in the sport they are coaching, but sometimes
we need a "warm body" or parent/volunteer to coach a team. In the area of Athletics you are always
asked to work or volunteer more than you get paid. In most cases if you put in 40 hours weeks then
you are paid for 40 hours. In athletics you may put in 40 hours and are only compensated 15 hours.
The middle school AD position is part–time and pays 10–12 hours per week. So you can imagine the
high turnover rate for AD's. Coaches are paid based on their experience in the sport they are
coaching. The coaches is pay is a percentage of the teacher's contract. It can range from 3–5% of
$37,600 and the teacher's contract varies from year to year. The Athletics Department made a direct
observation and diagnosed several problems identified above which were the high turnover

How Leadership Style Can Affect Coaching
Coaching competencies are needed in the growing industry around the world, especially for
leadership development. According to Zenger and Stinnett (2006), about 70% of formal leadership
development programs in organizations have some different forms of coaching. This reveals that
coaching is becoming a World Wide phenomenon. As a result of this popularity, many coaching
competencies, models, tools and training have appeared. For instance, effective coaching requires
the coach to have good communication skill, client motivation, self–management, and technical
skill. These skills enable the coaching session come up with positive success. However, a major

There is a need to consider the personal credibility of the coach, education, professional
background, experience, and expertise. To encourage a professional service, the coach should ensure
that all business materials such as cards send a strong consistent message to their potential clients.
This professionalism should also be extended to the dress code of the coach. For the organization,
the selection process of the coaches should involve stringent quality criteria. Involvement of the
coach: The coach should have the ability to develop an atmosphere of trust in the coaching sessions.
Coaches need to ensure that they have an intrinsic strong motivation for the coaching work. In my
opinion, a genuine interest in the client is significant to building a good coaching relationship. For
the organizations, coaches should be made to attend an interview process prior to any coaching
assignments. The interview gives the opportunity for both sides to learn about each other and decide
whether a working relationship can develop. Clarity and goals: The process and conduct of a
coaching program are important to the positive outcome. It involves roles, methods, and actions
during the coaching process (Schmidt, 2003). The coaches need to invest time at the beginning of
any coaching assignment in order to establish good working relationship with the client. The coach

As a professional Athlete you practice and develop your skills so you can be the best of your ability.
You have to maintain your equipment to keep your body clean, as well as you have to train, exercise
and maintain your weight so your body can be in the best condition available. To be a professional
athlete you have to be a team player because you have to work with other players on the team and
take instructions from the coach. There are many work environments for professional athletes, like
the field or court in which they play on. Another environment would be the weight room or indoor
facility, in these places the athletes work on bettering their skills. Athletes have a very unusual work

Personal Narrative : Graduate Selection Committee Essay
ATTN: Graduate Selection Committee
In today's digital world, young–peoples soft–skills are becoming far more valuable than content
knowledge. From every school I've worked with, visited, and competed against, the schools with the
strongest sports programs seem to correlate with the strongest academic schools in our area. Then
when I view how I can impact young–people the best, I feel the answer is as an athletic–
administrator and as a coach, environments that soft skills such as teamwork, collaboration, and
work ethic are stressed the most. Because of this, I am looking to take a leap in my career, by
applying for acceptance in your Master's in Athletic Administration Program.
Throughout two years in teaching and four years coaching, I've understood the need to be a lifelong
learner. When I got my bachelor's degree, or when I attempted to run my first drills as a football
coach, it amazed me how much I still had to learn, even if I was qualified to do the job. I try to
practice this in my math classroom, as I continually try to improve my craft. Now in my second year
I now trend more towards mastery learning, and standards–based grading. My reasoning behind this
is my experiences with coaching. The education that happens in coaching is closer to a job, as it's
not just an average on a scale. If you have a running back group that can't hang on to the ball, a
coach does not just walk back and say, "I guess we are going to fumble every carry today." I realized

My Favorite Experience In My Life
Pass. Set. Spike. Serve. Dig. I have heard these words surround me since I was young. Sports have

basketball. Even after all that, it still took me still took me years to find my true passion as far as
sports go.
Both of my parents played volleyball growing up so it has always been in my life one way or
another. My two brothers couldn't care less about it, rather spending their days playing soccer and
video games.
All of a sudden, the first day of school, middle school, rolled around. My school offered a sports

something new and try to find an activity that would keep me happy and busy. Sixth grade flew by
and seventh soon came. As per the one–year tradition, I signed up to play volleyball. This year, I
played on my school's varsity team.
Seventh grade was the year I tried out for club volleyball. My first year of club volleyball is where I
had some of the best and worst experiences of my life. My teammates are some of my best friends,

Title IX Case Study
Introduction
Title IX, enacted in 1972, requires all entities receiving federal funds to provide equal opportunities
to both genders. A Title IX complaint was filed against Chico Unified, and the OCR made several
allegations of non–compliance.
Title IX is broken into three areas (participation, financial assistance, and treatment of athletes). The
OCR did not allege non–compliance pertaining financial assistance, as Chico does not offer athletic
scholarships. Conversely, The OCR made several allegations under the areas of participation and
treatment of athletes. Below the allegations are separated into the two categories, followed by the
OCR's reasoning, and concluding with strategies to become compliant.

To prove compliance by prong three, a school must conduct viable surveys of all female students. In
2005, the Bush administration determined that unanswered emails can be considered as a lack of
interest. However, the OCR values a survey with high participation rates, compared to low (NIAAA,
p.112–114, 2011).
Response Strategies/Best Practices
An adequate survey must be conducted. An adequate survey requires impartially worded questions,
and a high participation percentage.
Suggest finding a time to conduct the survey in person, as opposed to emailing a survey.
Suggest raising the number of roster spots on girls' teams. For example, all girls' basketball rosters
should have 15 athletes.
Efforts should be made to add one girl team sport. The sport should be determined based upon both
survey results and the practicality of adding the sport. Practicality should be determined by ability to
compete, ability to obtain resources and hire coaches, and the ability to maintain a program long–
term.
Treatment of athletes
Allegations:
Disparity in the quality of facilities for boys' and girls' teams. The OCR found that the softball field
is below the quality of the baseball field.

Coach K Final Exam
May 1, 2012 Coach Mike Krzyzewski was a phenomenal coach and leader. He had the most career
wins in NCAA Division I history. His is a prime example of exceptional leadership. Throughout the
book Leading with the Heart I have seen prime examples of the following leadership theories:
transformational leadership, trait theory, behavioral theory, and power and influence theory. Coach
Mike Krzyzewski is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He played
point guard for the Cadet team. He retired from active duty in 1974 and started his coaching career.

They do not search for the traits or characteristics that define leadership, but seek to identify the
behaviors that will have a positive impact on the performance and satisfaction of the followers. This
theory focuses on how a leaders behave. I think Coach K was a democratic leader. Democratic
leaders allow the team to provide input before making a decision. The degree of the input can vary
from each leader. The way a leader behaves clearly impacts their leadership. Coach K was not about
just telling you do to something. He said, "A leader cannot just tell people what to do and then
expect them to perform well" (101). This quote pretty much sums up the behavioral theory. They do
not just want you to tell them what to do, but show them how it is done. Coach K was phenomenal
at getting things done; getting the behaviors out of his players that would make them be successful.
All of his players wanted to be there. They were not promised things to make them perform better.
Coach K told them he would give his all as long as they returned the favor and worked hard. The
power and influence theory focuses on the different ways a leader uses power and influence to get

Coach K Character Analysis
The most important characteristics an effective leader must have are: motivation, selflessness, and
have an exemplary character. Many people might say these characteristics are not essential for a
leader, but in order to be successful, a leader must think and care about others first rather than
themselves. A leader must be passionate and motivated to help the people achieve their goals. A
leader must want to lead the people at all times no matter what the circumstances are. A leader must
have the ability to persuade others and give them hope whenever times get rough. The last and most
important characteristic for an effective leader is to have an exemplary character. A leader must

Having an exemplary character shows people that a person can be reliable and trustworthy. An
example of an exemplary character can be found on page 32 in the reading "Seven Personal
Characteristics Of A Good Leader". The quote states "A good leader has an exemplary character. It
is important that a leader is trustworthy to lead others. A leader needs to be trusted and be known to
live their life with honesty and integrity." (Barbara 32). This quote reveals that an effective leader
must have a great character. An exemplary leader must show his people that they are important. He
must be a person of true authority and he must be seen by his people as a great leader, a person of
will. An exemplary leader must be responsible for the rights of others. Another example of a person
with an exemplary character can be found on the book "I am Malala" on page 139. The quote states
"My father would say to me, 'Any organization which works for peace, I will join. If you want to
resolve a dispute or come out from conflict, the very first thing is to speak the truth. If you have a
headache and tell the doctor you have a stomachache, how can the doctor help? You must speak the
truth. The truth will abolish fear." (Yousafzai 139). This quote reveals her father's personality. Her
father knows that the power of truth will always help overcome any conflicts. Malala's father sets an
exemplary character and an amazing role model for her daughter. Her father wants her to always

Georgia Swimming Should Pilot A Program
Today, the coaching profession is under heavy scrutiny, as there have been several reported incidents
where a coach has been involved in an abusive situation with one or more athletes. One lawsuit has
developed recently involving a physical education teacher attempting to force a female student into
a pool for class (Daly, 2014). Unfortunately, this incident was not an isolated case; this kind of
behavior is becoming more prevalent in the coaching trade. In the United States alone, there have
been several lawsuits developing against athletic coaches who have conducted themselves in an
unprofessional manner. Physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse has plagued the coaching
community for decades, especially in the sport swimming. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The problem appears to be a trend across the United States and should be a growing concern to the
athletes, parents, and the coaching communities. The impact on the athletes and their families are
the greatest because they suffer personally on the emotional, physiological, spiritual, and
psychological levels (Kerr & Stirling, 2012). The effects on the athletes are problematic as the
coaches manipulate the swimmers' athletic aspirations to impress a rationale, which leads the
swimmers to believe the coaches' actions are justifiable (Sturtz, 2014). The athletes are also affected
by their parents' trust in the coaches' authority, having the tendency to reinforce some of the coaches'
verbal and minor physical abuses, rather than offering their child parental support (Sturtz, 2014).
Therefore, when a major violation occurs, the parents' trust is broken and they "feel betrayed by the
coaches because of all they have invested in the coaching program on behalf of their swimmer" (K.
Burwick, personal communication, December 3, 2014). The sense of betrayal is amplified by all of
the money, time, and trust parents invest into the offending organization, such as a club program.
Not only do the coaches' actions affect the athletes and parents, but it affects the reputation of the
coaching profession as a whole. In the United

differentiate the legendary Coach Knight and Coach K, but if one examines the masters from a

His ability of being able to change his leadership styles depending on the circumstances is one that
Coach Knight hasn't been able to accomplish. The unflexibilty and stubbornness of Coach Knight
not only makes him a less popular coach but a less efffective one as well.
Another reason why Coach K would be a better fit for the head coach position is that he is a better
transformational leader. Charisma, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and
individualized consideration are tools the theory describes as necessary to influence others. What
makes Coach K one of a kind is that he combines all these to achieve a performance that is beyond
expectations. His philosophy of "sharing with one another and caring for one another" and his
principle about close and personal communication earn admiration, trust, and respect from his
players while his vision about the team being a family gives players a clear and appealing
motivation to work hard for each other. By not making too many rules, he also stimulates individual
creativity and by providing individualized consideration, he is able to satisfy the personal needs of
his players. As a transformational leader, Coach K is able to create trust which is the foundation of a
good coach–player relationship.

1. Compare and contrast Coach K and Coach Knight. How are they different? How are they similar?
Both Coach K and Coach Knight were well known for their management styles as for their on–court
accomplishments. A main element of both leadership and management is goal achievement. The
difference between these two coaches is that their leadership styles originated from the definitive
goals they established for their own teams. Coach K preferred a method that influenced the players
to build strong relationships and improve the team value. On the other hand, Coach Knight's
approach was to manage each one through an extreme program. In some situations, ... Show more

These ideas stem from McGregor's different theories of management "Theory X," and "Theory Y."
His peaceful manner in leadership meets today's standard in behavior and would be in the favor of
most organizations and employees. If the organization is well structured and has personnel with high
self–esteem and self–motivation, leaders like Coach K would be more suitable, because people
within the organization appreciate the leader's care and encouragement, performing at their best to
earn more respect and support from the leader. 3. Describe Coach Knight's leadership style. What
are his basic assumptions about motivation, leading and human nature?
The terms that were used most frequently in Coach Knight's story were: passionate, demanding,
extraordinary accomplishment, prepared, disciplined, meticulous, planned, flawless, and legendary.
On the other hand, there is also a tremendous opposite depiction of his controversial leading practice
such as: alleged, unacceptable, intimidate, profanity, anger, tyrant, irritated, foul–mouthed, foul–
tempered, bully, and even beast. I would say that Coach Knight is just like a taskmaster and his
leadership style consisted mainly of discipline and intimidation. His dismissal at IU for violating the
policy of Zero Tolerance was grounded on this behavior. Under such assumption about human

The Effects Of Harsh Coaching Of Young Athletes Essay

The Day That Changed My Life And Love Of Volleyball
Sunday February 28th, 2015. I remember that date, as if it happened yesterday. That was the day that
changed my life and love of volleyball. This was the day I got severely injured during a volleyball
tournament. The day had started and gone by painfully slow. Wherever I walked throughout North
High School hallways you noticed volleyball bags, blankets, coolers, food and wrappers all stuffed
into a small corner that a team redeemed as their spot. When I walked back into the muggy hot gym,
I could smell the knee pads, ankle braces, and sweat from all the girls playing. Along with the sound
of whistles from referees and the agonizing squeaking sound of the shoes moving against the gym
floors. My team and I made our way to an empty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Reflection On Coaching Shadowing
I have critically reviewed both coaches' A and B comparing them to each other. I will use Gibbs
(1988) model to help me reflective critically on the coaching shadowing I had to undertake as part
of my Sport Studies degree with the University of Hertfordshire during semester A. The reflection is
for both experiences with Coach A and B.
Coach A
Description
I undertook my coach shadowing in November for three weeks at Watford Academy. Sessions were
two hours long; the plan was to shadow at 8 hours for both coaches but as their training schedule
clashed with me under 12 team matches I was not able to do so. However, the overall experience
involved me shadowing coach A from a distance because the head of academy believed it would be
best I give the players and coach space. The sessions involved a mixture of technical practices at the
start with passing, dribbling and shooting activities then would progress into tactical practices such
as 5v3 possession, one versus one on goal, 6v3 counter/overload scenarios and would normally end
with a small–sided game. I was also able to observe a match with Arsenal V Watford U16. Arsenal
won 5–0.
As for coach B I coach shadowed for four sessions, 90 minutes long, sessions included 30 minutes
of technical work, 10–minute tag game, 25 minutes on overloads and 20–minute match time.
Feelings
During the start of the experience, I felt thrilled, animated and overjoyed to have an opportunity to
shadow with Watford's academy. I saw it as an opportunity to get my foot in the door at the club, so
it could be a possible club I could work for in the future. However, as the experience continued, and
the weeks went by I was sceptical at the level of coaching I observed and frustrated with the attitude
from specific Watford players. From my point of view, I see it as a fantastic opportunity for both
coaches and players to use the club as a stepping stone to better themselves and give 100% in every
session. However, at times it felt like both coach and players treated it like they were going to do a
shift in a supermarket as an example. That was the vibe I got, perhaps the coach did not meet his
role as being a motivator for his players. Overall, I feel fortunate and thankful to have

had a slight deficit when it came to technical skills. Coach K. made the human and conceptual skills
a higher priority. Coach K. was a genius in the ability of knowing his professions; this just means his

The capacity model by Michael Mumford contains five components. The skills that attributed to the
success of Coach Knight are the individual attributes. The skills of competency, motivation and
more specifically problem solving skills were the skills he possessed according to this model. He
had a deficit in his social judgment skills and environmental influences that, in turn, worked well for
Coach K and to his success. Coach K. often remarked on his upbringing and how this influenced the
quality of his communication. Coach K. struggled with the area of motivation, especially as it relates
to dominance. As stated above, Coach K. did not want to be a dictator, which simply meant
domination skills where not his priority.
The leadership styles of Coach Knight and Coach K. are different in a few aspects using the Blake
Mouton Managerial Grid. When referring to this leadership grid, Coach Knight falls under Produce
or Parish leadership. He views the players as being the means to an end. When we look at Coach K
using this grid he exemplifies high production–high people style. He stresses the needs of producing
and the needs of people of being an equal priority.

The Philosophy And Philosophy Of Philosophies In Field Hockey
What is a philosophy and why is it such a controversial topic amongst coaches from all sporting
sectors across the globe? A philosophy is "A theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for
behaviour" (Oxford University Press, 2017). I will personally be analysing the apparent necessity of
philosophies in sport, predominantly in field hockey. I have played the sport for over a decade, had
my fair share of coaches in which I can safely say no two were remotely similar and I think this is
not due to the fact that they had different methods of coaching but in fact due to their own individual
philosophies towards coaching. What also became clear to me during long–terms periods with
certain individual coaches is that a philosophy is not set ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I feel as if instead of the players moulding to the coach's philosophy, they must mould their
philosophy to them. Hockey can be an extremely dangerous sport if it is not taught correctly as I
have witnessed many horrific injuries which could have been avoided if the player were given
clearer guidance which is the responsibility of the coach. In order to coach thoroughly they must not
view the team generally but instead view each player on the hockey field as an individual with
distinct personalities and various personal lives. The relationship that exists between a player and a
coach is vital for the hockey player to excel in their field. For a strong coach–athlete relationship to
exist the coach must first understand the athlete and acknowledge that they are not robots and have
feelings. They must understand that an athlete may not always be up to taking on the task at hand
physically or even mentally and because of this the coach must have a certain level of lenience and
compassion towards their athletes as a poor relationship may inhibit the athlete's performance as
well as the coach's ability to teach (Mageau & Vallerand, 2003). As hockey is such a fast paced sport
that players must be able to react to an action within a split second as lot of rapid actions and
reactions are involved in hockey. This is something which the coach must allow for in his method or
philosophy to allow for improvement in their mental abilities which will positively affect their
physical abilities, once again, improving their overall performance on the field. This also cements
the idea of coaches having philosophies as this effects the coach's attitude towards preparing
sessions and their relationship with the athlete is an aspect which affects their behaviour meaning it

My Coaching Philosophy I always emphasize three things to athletes. One, always put your family
over everything you do in life. They are and will always be the most important and number one
thing. Second is academics, getting an education is important. Not everyone in this world is able to
receive a quality education so it should not be taken for granted. Third is basketball, being on a
basketball team can open a lot of doors and help athletes lead a fulfilling and healthy life. On the
basketball court my team will work hard, communicate, and hustle. I emphasize defense on my team

of my athletes so communication can happen off the court. I believe communication off the court
will create better results on the court. Problems with teammates and/or coaches being talked about
without them present will not be tolerated on my team. Not playing the right way, for example not
showing good sportsmanship is not acceptable from athletes and coaches. Showing respect to

Analysis of Coach Knight and Coach K (Q1) After the analysis of both Coach Knight and Coach K's
management styles, it is inevitable to note that the management styles differ from each other. Even
though both coaches have the same record, their management styles are different. The two are very
successful in their careers as college basketball coaches, yet their leadership styles differ because of
their independent understanding of human nature. By analyzing the two management styles, it can
be easy to note that the leadership styles chosen by a leader is influenced by our self–awareness and

Teaching And Coaching As A Philosophy
A philosophy can be defined as 'a set of values and behaviours that serve to guide the actions of a
coach' (Wilcox and Trudel, 1998, p.41). By drawing from all facets of a person's life, each is specific
to the learner and distinguishes teachers and coaches from one another. It can be consciously
developed as the professional, teacher/coach and student within education is exposed to a practice as
well as other life experiences. It is believed that 'clearly articulating one's philosophy is a
prerequisite to good practice' (Cassidy et al, 2008, p.55) throughout this essay I hope to reflect on
my increasing knowledge foundation in teaching and coaching and how it has successfully
developed and been applied to my philosophy as a coach.

However, I disagree, as a coach I believe you must have specific sport knowledge to the sport in
context but knowledge from a wider base to fully engage in successful practice of techniques which
accompany a successful end result as well as being able to develop the athlete on a wider basis. This
is supported by 'the fact coaches work with fewer people and at a higher skill level does not negate
the fact that they are engaged in teaching...skills, techniques and strategies'( Drewe, 2000, p.81) this
coupled with the fact coaches tend to spend more time with athletes which means they too, also
develop the fundamental domains of the athlete. For this reason I believe both roles are intertwined
and provide basis for both to thrive from. In order to for me to be an affective coach I must take both
concepts and make sure that I develop the child's ability as well as other factors.
A way I have developed as a coach is by exploring philosophies of coaching and in particular three
core philosophical concepts, values (axiology), morality (ethics), and meaning (ontology). Values
(axiology) can be split into two sources, which include value in both sport and coaching and more
distinctly subjective and objective values. This is determined by whether a person is intrinsically or
extrinsically motivated. Subjective values

Personal Writing: The Evaluation Of My Coaches Essay
Personal Writing: The Evaluation of My Coaches
Throughout my high school basketball career I experienced several different coaches. Every new
coach brought a different approach to coaching.
The varying techniques of coaching brought about different attitudes and expectations during
practices and games. I found that during practice, coaches had either the nice–guy or the drill
sergeant approach. They also had different methods of coaching during and after the games.
Practices are very important to basketball. If you practice hard and take it seriously, your team can
become successful. All of my coaches in high school took practices seriously. I basically had two
different types ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I prefer the nice–guy coaching method during practice. This makes practice more fun. The coach is
serious about making our team better, but he realizes that people are not perfect. During calisthenics
he would talk to us about our day at school and tell us dirty jokes, and just try to be our friend.
While we were practicing he pointed out our mistakes, but when we did something good he praised
us. This made practice fun and everyone was more at ease during practices. All of my coaches gave
a pre–game and half time pep talk. One of the coaches I had would tell us how the other team
played, who we needed to keep from shooting, and then tell us to go out there and kick some butt.
This was his basic pre–game pep talk. At half time, if we had been playing bad, this coach would
come in the locker room cussing. He had a pace–maker and when he would get mad at us you could
hear it going tick, tick, tick, tick rapidly. He was a little on the crazy side. Other coaches, during
pre–game pep talk, would tell us a little story that would move us in such a way that made us want
to play hard and win. During half time if we played horrible every coach I had would come in
cussing. If we had been playing good some coaches would come in say, "Good game."
then leave. Others would come in and point out specific things that we did good. The coaches that
came in pointing out specific good points about the game was my favorite.

Athlete Feedback Research

  • 1. Athlete Feedback Research Introduction Beginners through to elite individual athletes rely on a coach's feedback to help enhance their skill acquisition and progression, performance and overall player development. Communication and continual feedback between a player and coach can be vital in order to increase these components. This review will look at the influence of effective feedback and communication between a coach and tennis players in an attempt to illustrate its significance in the player's development as well as their performance. Developing an effective connection with the athlete can be essential in the early stages of a coach/player relationship, a junior player looks to senior players and coaches as role models (Defrancesco, Johnson et all, 1997) This early connection ... • 3. Vladimir Nabokov's Five-Point Play Five–Point Play is the ideal buddy to the 2000–2001 Basketball Season. The book is a pass up blow record of how the Blue Devils developed and developed amid its title run. A considerable measure of what Coach K stresses in Five–Point Play has particular echoes from his past book. Such critical lessons as correspondence, trust, aggregate obligation, mindful, and so on are enormous topics that he re–stresses to the group. Be that as it may, the essential distinction is that in this book, Coach K takes after the season in sequential request, with depictions of practices and in–diversion circumstances. There are likewise a few quotes from the players, mentors and staff that are embedded amid these circumstances that further light up the alternate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Luckily, the Duke Blue Devils conquered this hindrance and surged towards the National Championship. Mentor Mike Krzyzewski tries to instruct the 2001 Duke ball group about b–ball, as well as life as well. By setting cases for the group, Coach demonstrates his players the consequences of correspondence, trust, care, obligation, and pride, similar focuses that helped them win the national title. "Mentor K" has a team of capable mentors and players that incorporate Shane Battier, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer and some more. I like the way that Coach Krzyzewski set up this book together, by clarifying each get up and go talk, portraying each group, and giving the points of interest of each diversion. In spite of the fact that I wouldn't prescribe this book to a Tarheel fan, I trust that each other ball fan gets an opportunity to peruse Five Point Play. Through the book you will discover Coach K's plans that drove the group towards their objectives. • 5. Coach vs Mentor Mentoring and Coaching: The Roles and Practices Dr. Norhasni Zainal Abiddin, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia ABSTRACT Mentoring and coaching are all part of educational training to develop people in the professions. There are several similarities and differences in the main issues involved in mentoring and coaching. They are related to the selfdevelopment, professional growth and career development of the mentee/coachee. In establishing the approaches to be used, care must be taken to ensure that each person understands the limits or boundaries of the relationship. Indeed, it may be as important to indicate that there is a way out of the relationship as it is to encourage its development in the first place. Supervisory approaches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Generally, it is a popular approach in education and in business. In a recent survey of Fortune 500 companies, 96 percent of executives identified mentoring as an important developmental tool, and 75 percent of them said it had played a key role in their career success (Heinz 2003). A mentor is identified as someone who teaches the student in a personal and close long–term relationship that allows critical concentration on the task performance (Brown and Krager 1985; Kirkham 1993). Before the 1990s, most authors used the word 'supervisor' in reference to a mentor at school with the meaning of someone who directs or oversees and watches over students so as to maintain order (Gardiner 1989), but increasingly, we see references to the mentoring of young people entering the teaching profession. Bullock (1988) was of the opinion that a mentor should establish a good rapport with his protégés, assess their needs in consultation with other interested and appropriate parties, and end the mentoring relationship at the appropriate time and in an appropriate manner. Thus, each mentoring arrangement is unique, and its particular nature will be established according to the personalities of the two individuals concerned (Mountford 1993). The relationship facilitates another's personal growth and can also encourage and enable learning in order to maximise the mentee's potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be (Brown and ... Coaching Climate Essay Evaluation of The Coaching Climate of an Observed Training Session Context: I observed a training session of the UCD Trampoline Squad on Wednesday October 8th 2014 from 8:00am to 10:00am in Hall A of the UCD Sports Centre. The session was lead by Head Coach Ryan Teevan. Each athlete has their own programme and the session was divided into 4 parts – warm ups, skills & links, routines and conditioning. Coaching Climate & T.A.R.G.E.T. Framework I would say that Head Coach Ryan created a positive atmosphere – primarily a mastery climate with nuances of an ego climate. T – Task I would say as a coach Ryan encourages task goal orientation. He focuses on small corrections that make a big difference. As outlined by McLean, K et al (2012) coaches are motivated by coach and athlete development and this is very evident in Ryan's case. Ryan has small, achievable goals for most of his athletes – many people who are just mastering their first routines will just be aiming to just land them in competition. For the top elite in the group, Dwayne, his goals are more substantial and more ego based. He is already perfecting his routine for his next competition in 6 ... However we see examples of a performance climate such as praise often being given in front of the other athletes and mistakes in routines mean you do double conditioning. Mistakes should not be grounds for punishment nor should they be "feared". However, Ryan encourages his athletes to focus and stay cool under pressure often leading by example. Gearity, B. et al (2011) showed that poor coaches who were disinterested or distracted negatively impacted on their team's performance. By giving constant verbal cues, Ryan focuses his athletes on putting effort into their skills to achieve their potential. He is actively trying to lessen the above effect on his ... • 9. Should College Athletes be Paid? Essay Should College Athletes be Paid? Over the past century college athletics have grown more popular than most professional sports. Most of its popularity is due to a large student body in addition to its Alumni, but nonetheless it has surpassed professional sports from its monetary success to its fan support. College athletics are also a very important commodity to Universities around the nation. Next to student's tuition, that's where the majority of the money comes from. No one is more responsible for bringing in that money more than the coach and his/her players. In this notion, one would think that such important people should be paid for a job well done. But this isn't the case. Over the years a question has emerged, should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Martinez supports his argument by supplying information from; important figures the sports world may know (Steve Spurrier), and rules that continue to fuel his argument that college athletes should be paid. For example, Martinez uses the "amateurism" argument from the NCAA to help explain why college officials would not allow college athletes to be paid, and to further support his argument as to why they should be paid. Martinez also uses opponent's views to help support his. "Opponents of the play for play idea say that college–athletes should not be paid because through scholarships, they are already being paid" (Martinez). Using arguments such as this one helps Martinez expand his argument so that when he is through there are no aspects of his argument left unanswered. To validate his argument, Martinez uses actual people and guidelines in his article. He uses Steve Spurrier as an example; "Head coach of the University of Florida, signed a six year contract that will pay him nearly $2 million per year" (Martinez). Using this information shows that a coach, who is not more important than a player, is making a ton of money. As opposed to a player, who makes no money at all and is of more importance. After all, without the players there could be no coaches. It is a well known fact that college coaches make more than enough money. Just recently, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That coach is Dennis Lorio, who Graduated from LSU (Louisiana State University) with an economic degree and played baseball. "I love the intensity and the relationship in football" Coach Lorio explaining with a passionate expression. I can see it in his eyes that he is very dedicated and hardworking coach. As of now he is 62 years old and still willing to coach. "It's not the same without coaching. The joy and the sorrow I feel during the season has been addicted to me. I've been in this game almost all my life and that is a very long time." From the article of Sports Nola, Nick Kreugar wrote about Dennis Lorio: He was offensive coordinator at East St. John for the past two years, but resigned for family reasons last October. He is well known for his time at Thibodaux and led them to the inaugural 5A state championship in 1991. Most of the ideologies strictly informed that the process is essential, and while Fitz talks about winning, it is the desire and not the victory that is important. There are many examples that refer back to the different statements about winning versus the process. Valuing the process towards a particular goal and perfecting that process will provide you with the success desired. On the other hand, the ability to provide the process, which includes self–motivation and hard work necessary. The different writing techniques used to give off different perspectives for the reader to understand. The essay mainly intended the reader to understand the level of entitlement that parents have with a team and the goals/process that must be met in order to win. The various approaches to coaching and how much authority parents had depending on how involved they were. Transitions, such as closers or openers most of the paragraphs cause readers to be lost in the in the wrong areas and a quick switch of the setting hurt the initial and long–term meaning of the essay. A firm belief Coach Fitz has throughout the essay is to win. "You know what I think about second place? he said. 'Here's what I think about second place.' • 20. The Effects Of Harsh Coaching Of Young Athletes Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports all together, but if the coaches get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. At a young age, children need discipline in order to put them in the right direction for their futures. This discipline is found in numerous forms, and one of the most common forms is through sports. David Brooks said, "The best coaches still live by a code, and they make no apology for demanding that kids live up to it." (Brooks) Though strict coaching can turn some young children and their parents away from sports, it can give kids a good role model, teach them discipline, and help them learn to get along with other people. Parents often have concerns for how coaches treat their young athletes, but most coaches are the best character role models that a child will have. As David Brooks, author of the article "Organized Sports Can Benefit Children", says "Coaches have become the leading moral instructors in America today." (Brooks). Groups like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely to keep coaches doing their job of creating mature and respectful athletes (Positive). Children need these positive role models in their lives. Even if a child has great role models as parents, it is even better to have one outside of the family. A coach can serve as someone that kids should admire, love, and respect even though they are outside of their family; this will prepare children for their future of dealing with ... It is a fact that people come and people go for all types of reasons. Change is forever arising, sometimes for the better or worse. Within the middle school athletics level there are 13 Athletic Directors (AD) positions and 160 or more coaching positions, dependent on each teams' participation. AD's and coaches are paid employees of the district. The AD's supervise the coaches at their individual school buildings or act as a sports liaison within their assigned school. The coaches simply coach. Many of our coaches have experience in the sport they are coaching, but sometimes we need a "warm body" or parent/volunteer to coach a team. In the area of Athletics you are always asked to work or volunteer more than you get paid. In most cases if you put in 40 hours weeks then you are paid for 40 hours. In athletics you may put in 40 hours and are only compensated 15 hours. The middle school AD position is part–time and pays 10–12 hours per week. So you can imagine the high turnover rate for AD's. Coaches are paid based on their experience in the sport they are coaching. The coaches is pay is a percentage of the teacher's contract. It can range from 3–5% of $37,600 and the teacher's contract varies from year to year. Personal Narrative : Graduate Selection Committee Essay ATTN: Graduate Selection Committee In today's digital world, young–peoples soft–skills are becoming far more valuable than content knowledge. Then when I view how I can impact young–people the best, I feel the answer is as an athletic– administrator and as a coach, environments that soft skills such as teamwork, collaboration, and work ethic are stressed the most. Because of this, I am looking to take a leap in my career, by applying for acceptance in your Master's in Athletic Administration Program. Throughout two years in teaching and four years coaching, I've understood the need to be a lifelong learner. When I got my bachelor's degree, or when I attempted to run my first drills as a football coach, it amazed me how much I still had to learn, even if I was qualified to do the job. I try to practice this in my math classroom, as I continually try to improve my craft. Now in my second year I now trend more towards mastery learning, and standards–based grading. My reasoning behind this is my experiences with coaching. The education that happens in coaching is closer to a job, as it's not just an average on a scale. His is a prime example of exceptional leadership. Coach Mike Krzyzewski is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He played point guard for the Cadet team. He retired from active duty in 1974 and started his coaching career. They do not search for the traits or characteristics that define leadership, but seek to identify the behaviors that will have a positive impact on the performance and satisfaction of the followers. This theory focuses on how a leaders behave. I think Coach K was a democratic leader. Democratic leaders allow the team to provide input before making a decision. The degree of the input can vary from each leader. The way a leader behaves clearly impacts their leadership. Coach K was not about just telling you do to something. He said, "A leader cannot just tell people what to do and then expect them to perform well" (101). This quote pretty much sums up the behavioral theory. They do not just want you to tell them what to do, but show them how it is done. Coach K was phenomenal at getting things done; getting the behaviors out of his players that would make them be successful. All of his players wanted to be there. They were not promised things to make them perform better. Coach K told them he would give his all as long as they returned the favor and worked hard. The power and influence theory focuses on the different ways a leader uses power and influence to get things done. The most well known of power and influence theories is French and Raven's Five Forms of Power. This model distinguishes between using your position to exert power and using your traits to be powerful. It says that using personal power is the best because expert power (the ... The problem appears to be a trend across the United States and should be a growing concern to the athletes, parents, and the coaching communities. The impact on the athletes and their families are the greatest because they suffer personally on the emotional, physiological, spiritual, and psychological levels (Kerr & Stirling, 2012). The effects on the athletes are problematic as the coaches manipulate the swimmers' athletic aspirations to impress a rationale, which leads the swimmers to believe the coaches' actions are justifiable (Sturtz, 2014). The athletes are also affected by their parents' trust in the coaches' authority, having the tendency to reinforce some of the coaches' verbal and minor physical abuses, rather than offering their child parental support (Sturtz, 2014). Therefore, when a major violation occurs, the parents' trust is broken and they "feel betrayed by the coaches because of all they have invested in the coaching program on behalf of their swimmer" (K. Burwick, personal communication, December 3, 2014). The sense of betrayal is amplified by all of the money, time, and trust parents invest into the offending organization, such as a club program. If the organization is well structured and has personnel with high self–esteem and self–motivation, leaders like Coach K would be more suitable, because people within the organization appreciate the leader's care and encouragement, performing at their best to earn more respect and support from the leader. 3. Describe Coach Knight's leadership style. What are his basic assumptions about motivation, leading and human nature? The terms that were used most frequently in Coach Knight's story were: passionate, demanding, extraordinary accomplishment, prepared, disciplined, meticulous, planned, flawless, and legendary. On the other hand, there is also a tremendous opposite depiction of his controversial leading practice such as: alleged, unacceptable, intimidate, profanity, anger, tyrant, irritated, foul–mouthed, foul– tempered, bully, and even beast. I would say that Coach Knight is just like a taskmaster and his leadership style consisted mainly of discipline and intimidation. His dismissal at IU for violating the policy of Zero Tolerance was grounded on this behavior. Under such assumption about human nature, Coach ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. The Effects Of Harsh Coaching Of Young Athletes Essay Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports all together, but if the coaches get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. That was the day that changed my life and love of volleyball. This was the day I got severely injured during a volleyball tournament. The day had started and gone by painfully slow. Wherever I walked throughout North High School hallways you noticed volleyball bags, blankets, coolers, food and wrappers all stuffed into a small corner that a team redeemed as their spot. When I walked back into the muggy hot gym, I could smell the knee pads, ankle braces, and sweat from all the girls playing. Along with the sound of whistles from referees and the agonizing squeaking sound of the shoes moving against the gym floors. My team and I made our way to an empty ... (A ball that will be returned by a pass rather than a spike.) They easily passed that ball and they tried to run a fast offense and do a quick set, (a set (usually 2' above the net) in which the hitter is approaching the setter, and may even be in the air, before the setter delivers the ball.) but I realized it right away and went up to block and I got it, but their coverage was where it needed to be also and they got the ball up. After doing that their setting came up and dumped (The setter dump is an attack in which the setter becomes an offensive threat to score points and cause a distraction to the opponent 's block and floor defenders. I will use Gibbs (1988) model to help me reflective critically on the coaching shadowing I had to undertake as part of my Sport Studies degree with the University of Hertfordshire during semester A. The reflection is for both experiences with Coach A and B. Coach A Description I undertook my coach shadowing in November for three weeks at Watford Academy. Sessions were two hours long; the plan was to shadow at 8 hours for both coaches but as their training schedule clashed with me under 12 team matches I was not able to do so. However, the overall experience involved me shadowing coach A from a distance because the head of academy believed it would be best I give the players and coach space. The sessions involved a mixture of technical practices at the start with passing, dribbling and shooting activities then would progress into tactical practices such as 5v3 possession, one versus one on goal, 6v3 counter/overload scenarios and would normally end with a small–sided game. I was also able to observe a match with Arsenal V Watford U16. Arsenal won 5–0. As for coach B I coach shadowed for four sessions, 90 minutes long, sessions included 30 minutes of technical work, 10–minute tag game, 25 minutes on overloads and 20–minute match time. Feelings During the start of the experience, I felt thrilled, animated and overjoyed to have an opportunity to shadow with Watford's academy. I saw it as an opportunity to get my foot in the door at the club, so it could be a possible club I could work for in the future. However, as the experience continued, and the weeks went by I was sceptical at the level of coaching I observed and frustrated with the attitude from specific Watford players. From my point of view, I see it as a fantastic opportunity for both coaches and players to use the club as a stepping stone to better themselves and give 100% in every session. However, at times it felt like both coach and players treated it like they were going to do a shift in a supermarket as an example. That was the vibe I got, perhaps the coach did not meet his role as being a motivator for his players. Overall, I feel fortunate and thankful to have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The skills of competency, motivation and more specifically problem solving skills were the skills he possessed according to this model. He had a deficit in his social judgment skills and environmental influences that, in turn, worked well for Coach K and to his success. Coach K. often remarked on his upbringing and how this influenced the quality of his communication. Coach K. struggled with the area of motivation, especially as it relates to dominance. As stated above, Coach K. did not want to be a dictator, which simply meant domination skills where not his priority. • 71. The Philosophy And Philosophy Of Philosophies In Field Hockey What is a philosophy and why is it such a controversial topic amongst coaches from all sporting sectors across the globe? A philosophy is "A theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for behaviour" (Oxford University Press, 2017). I will personally be analysing the apparent necessity of philosophies in sport, predominantly in field hockey. I have played the sport for over a decade, had my fair share of coaches in which I can safely say no two were remotely similar and I think this is not due to the fact that they had different methods of coaching but in fact due to their own individual philosophies towards coaching. What also became clear to me during long–terms periods with certain individual coaches is that a philosophy is not set ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I feel as if instead of the players moulding to the coach's philosophy, they must mould their philosophy to them. Hockey can be an extremely dangerous sport if it is not taught correctly as I have witnessed many horrific injuries which could have been avoided if the player were given clearer guidance which is the responsibility of the coach. In order to coach thoroughly they must not view the team generally but instead view each player on the hockey field as an individual with distinct personalities and various personal lives. The relationship that exists between a player and a coach is vital for the hockey player to excel in their field. For a strong coach–athlete relationship to exist the coach must first understand the athlete and acknowledge that they are not robots and have feelings. They must understand that an athlete may not always be up to taking on the task at hand physically or even mentally and because of this the coach must have a certain level of lenience and compassion towards their athletes as a poor relationship may inhibit the athlete's performance as well as the coach's ability to teach (Mageau & Vallerand, 2003). As hockey is such a fast paced sport that players must be able to react to an action within a split second as lot of rapid actions and reactions are involved in hockey. This is something which the coach must allow for in his method or philosophy to allow for improvement in their mental abilities which will positively affect their physical abilities, once again, improving their overall performance on the field. This also cements the idea of coaches having philosophies as this effects the coach's attitude towards preparing sessions and their relationship with the athlete is an aspect which affects their behaviour meaning it is part of their ... By drawing from all facets of a person's life, each is specific to the learner and distinguishes teachers and coaches from one another. It can be consciously developed as the professional, teacher/coach and student within education is exposed to a practice as well as other life experiences. It is believed that 'clearly articulating one's philosophy is a prerequisite to good practice' (Cassidy et al, 2008, p.55) throughout this essay I hope to reflect on my increasing knowledge foundation in teaching and coaching and how it has successfully developed and been applied to my philosophy as a coach. However, I disagree, as a coach I believe you must have specific sport knowledge to the sport in context but knowledge from a wider base to fully engage in successful practice of techniques which accompany a successful end result as well as being able to develop the athlete on a wider basis. This is supported by 'the fact coaches work with fewer people and at a higher skill level does not negate the fact that they are engaged in teaching...skills, techniques and strategies'( Drewe, 2000, p.81) this coupled with the fact coaches tend to spend more time with athletes which means they too, also develop the fundamental domains of the athlete. For this reason I believe both roles are intertwined and provide basis for both to thrive from. In order to for me to be an affective coach I must take both concepts and make sure that I develop the child's ability as well as other factors. A way I have developed as a coach is by exploring philosophies of coaching and in particular three core philosophical concepts, values (axiology), morality (ethics), and meaning (ontology).
