White Male Patriarchy
Within the cultural context of society, the systematic structure is defined by White male patriarchy that sanctions Black males to convey the way in
which they have been socialized and institutionalized to think, perform, and behave when self– identifying as male. However, the social order of
society is structured by a historical system centered among race–based superiority. This notion impedes the development of a true independent identity.
Consequently, a struggle arises for distinctiveness, respect, and power. For Black men there becomes a conflict with who he is versus how he is
projected in society.
Although race conjures biological and phenotypical characteristics, there is no necessary relationship. Yet, race is a social and historical process, it is
both "a dimension of human representation and an element of social structure" (Omi and Winant 124). Subsequently, contention arises with the attempt
to assimilate black male identity with the ethics and conduct of the White majority. Charles Mills argues this point with the concept of the "somatic
norm". Mills writes, "...in early racist theories one finds not only moral but aesthetic judgments, with beauty and fair races pitted against ugly and
dark races" (Mills 61). What Mills is describing is the standard by which other bodies are judged. Although what is being judged is not narrowed to
beauty. The somatic norm is correlated with intellectual and moral capacities. With this approach the black race is considered a

Black Women : A White Male Patriarchal World
Black women are showing why they belong in entertainment. Whether it's acting, writing, or producing they are well needed. Shonda Lynn Rhimes is
an American television producer, screenwriter, and author. She is known for shows such as Grey 's Anatomy, its spin
–off Private Practice, and the
political thriller series Scandal, all of which have aired on ABC. I will be using Scandal to analyze the ideology of a black dominant women in a white
male patriarchal world. The show is centered on protagonist Olivia Pope who is a professional fixer. If there is any crisis, problem, or scandal Olivia
Pope is always the first person to call. Kerry Washington who plays Olivia Pope is the first black woman in forty years to star in a network drama in this

Early in the show they give up her biggest weakness, which is her affair with President Fitzgerald Grants. He is also married with children so in
these moments you see Olivia when she is most fragile. This shows hegemonic ideology because President Fitz make things happen how he wants
to. With the fact that she is black and he is white alone make things hard enough. Olivia is the president's secret, at least to the American public and
the fact that he is so much more powerful just make things complicated. Olivia who is viewed by her friends and families as strong and stern has
been very hard at making decisions when it comes to the president. The fact that she spent so much time pinning after a man who says she is the
love of his life, but ultimately goes home to his wife every night is rather confusing. The president shows how he uses his power to weaken Olivia
Pope. Scandal shows the defiance of male patriarchal ideology by Olivia Pope with which she goes back to every episode. We watch in scandal as
President Fitz continues to fail to express his love to Olivia Pope. The only way we see him expressing himself is through his sexual activities. In
which Olivia denies wanting to until she finally gives in. There is a constant reaffirmation of the patriotic struggle

Comparison Of White Upper Class Male And Female
In early 1800s society, there was an "Unequal power relation between male and female". Men were traditionally seen as being the dominant, physically
stronger and socially more powerful in terms of status: "traditional masculinity is a strength, rationality, stoicism and self–reliance". Women's position
in society and within their homes was portrayed as subservient, obedient to their fathers, brothers and male relatives and their husbands throughout their
lives.
Fagin: stereotypical man
Fagin's power lies within him being the elite in a criminal group; his "masculine' qualities position in an area of 'great and dangerous power".
White upper class males are seen as being the far more superior group then the lower social class. Whereas it could be argued that "A masculine
gendering is supposed to evoke positive connotation", the men 's in Oliver Twist are most typically linked to violence. The greed of Fagin is
shown when he says 'if you do it well, a pound my dear" this gives a reflection of his character in the story. His portrayed as being arrogant as he
uses children for his own good as they are seen to steal money for him. His arrogant side is shown through his treatment of the children "what 's your
name you hardened scoundrel" indicates his dominating behaviour toward the children as he has control over them and he doesn't let Oliver speak
"what is his name officer" show his controlling character indicate how people are scared of the way he presents and deceive

African American Males are Following Trends of White...
Recently, the media has caused many stereotypes due to portraying African American males playing feminine roles. This perspective depicts men of
color wearing attire outside of the stereotypical sagging pants and oversized t–shirts. It depicts an educated man with social class and sophistication. To
date, society holds African American men to rigid stereotypes and a high standard of masculinity. However, once a man of color steps outside societal
stereotypes and into the perspective reflected by this new lens, far too often his own race rejects him on the grounds of not molding into the same rigid
stereotypes that prevents his growth. Stripping the young man who adopts this new perspective of his ability to identify with his own race, ... Show

Growing up, Perry suffered "brutal physical abuse from his father and severe sexual abuse from several adults" (Tyler ). Dressing as a drag queen to
fulfill the role of his most reputable and recognizable character, Madea, a no–nonsense, thuggishly tough matriarch, Tyler Perry flirts with gender roles
and challenges societal beliefs on masculinity within the black world. In Forbes' most recent list of the world's one hundred most powerful celebrities,
Perry is highlighted at twenty–two, alongside Hollywood's most notable celebrities, including his close friend and reigning champion of Forbes'
number one spot for five consecutive years–Oprah Winfrey. Despite his vast success, Tyler Perry still receives flak from judgmental skeptics who
challenge his masculinity as a man of color. Due to his acting role as Madea, some skeptics believe Mr. Perry is less of a man as he dresses in drag
for a character in his plays and is suspected to be homosexual. This not only points him out individually, but it also creates stereotypes grounded from
this source of media to the African American males. Grounded with integrity, black culture must celebrate rather than condemn every aspect of its
people.
African Americans must be informed of the subliminal messages being passed through movies and Television shows. In order to dismiss the
inaccuracy of the way colored males are viewed, the media must expand and show more educated African Americans men

White Males And The American Writers
In this nature writing course and in all my literature courses there haven't been many African American writers represented. This isn't because they
don't exist, but because the more commonly known writers have the attributes of being more respected, and are widely accepted writers in American
literature, who majority of the time are white males like Thoreau and Leopold. These are just examples, and they are good writers but there are also
good African American writers that deserve just as much representation when teaching college courses. There's a greater choice of writers besides
having the same works of authors we've already read throughout our experience in studying literature. There needs to be a better variety of cultures
represented in literature, white males shouldn't always be the most read and studied authors in public institutions. Minorities should be represented too,
especially African American writers since they played such a great role in the American history, and endured so much oppression from the society
they've lived in. In this course, Nature Writing at metropolitan University, we had a variety of different races, but the Blackrace didn't get the
representation they deserved. There was a writing titled, "from a black boy" by Wright, and it wasn't a good representation of Black writers in
America. I remember reading it and questioning what I just read; because it didn't have any emotion or deeper meaning like most the other readings we
studied. In

White Male Privilege: Article Analysis

clicked the name and a story came up. It was about a white male athlete in Stanford University. The title initially attracted me, the title was "The
Stanford Rape Case Illustrates the Toxicity of White Male Privilege". The topic literally catches my attention and I was eager to read this article that
this white male privilege still exist. I wanted to know about what the situation is about? When I was reading this article, it was basically about a white

CREED Paper
My name is Frederick Isler, I am 20 years old and I am currently enrolled in the Elementary Education bachelor program at Buffalo State College. I
am a white male therefore I have never really faced many ethnically or sexually diverse situations where I was treated poorly or differently. I am a
Roman Catholic and this set some of the stepping stones in many cases for certain views on things in life. I taught at the catholic program that my
church offers for a couple years and am very involved with helping the youth in the parish. This is where I believe my love or passion for teaching
came from. While being at the youth group I learned being involved in our community and helping out others truly lead to success in life. I believe
that children are our future and deserve a voice and I strongly believe that it is the teachers who give the students the power to strengthen that voice
with knowledge and education. I played sports growing up with two younger brothers, this gave me a competitive spirit that made me believe in
myself in order to do things if I put my mind too it. I have coached basketball and softball for over four years and just recently won championships in
both respected leagues, one being a youth basketball league and the other a church softball league. Teaching these kids and watching them grow really
gave me a passion for wanting to teach for a career. I firmly believe that every single student

White Male Power vs the Other
Abstract
Thomas King's story, "'You'll Never Believe What Happened' Is Always a Great Way To Start", " Race, Class and Gender in Asian America" by Yen Le
Espiritu and " Zebra: Growing up Black and White in Canada" by Lawrence Hill all illustrate how people of minority deal with their intersectionality
of gender, race and ethnicity and their limitations that the dominant ideology of the west puts on them.
Introduction
Since the beginning of time stories were a major influence in the ways generations would pass down knowledge to the younger generations. The power
of stories and storytelling teaches individuals valuable lessons and good morals that help mold them into reasonable citizens. In western society

Even though that was not the case, the employer in this case is a man and has a bias against women, so he decides to use that as an excuse so his
sexism will never be caught. As in a global perspective some parts in the world like Afghanistan women do not have the right to vote and their place
in society is to take care of the family. As a way of overcoming this obstacle in western society is to educate more individuals that this is happening so
individuals will want to protest for change to their government. So the governments can get involved and implant rules based on equality for men and
women in managerial positions. That will ultimately start the process of less inequality likely to happen in the work environment.
King's mother deals with her ethnicity, as it is a major part in her intersectionality. Her skin colour was always a reminder in the story as it is constantly
reminded those individuals of minority, "White was more than just a colour" (King, 2) King's mothers intersectionality provides readers insight that the
stories and the experiences she goes through may be different than another person because her intersectionality of race, gender, and ethnicity may
different than another person.
Through the words of Thomas King, he teaches his readers "Stories can control lives, for there is a part of me that has never been able to move past

White Privilege And Male Privilege
In 1988, Peggy McIntosh wrote an article in the book Things Are Not What They Seem: Readings in Sociology entitled "White Privilege and Male
Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to See Correspondences through Work in Women's Studies". Such a long title seems humorously
unnecessary, is spite of the serious nature of its subject matter. In short, when McIntosh refers to "white privilege" she means that being of white
decent allows her a set of assets at birth that people of color are not afforded, simply due to the light color of her skin. McIntosh proposes that white
privilege is invisible to most Caucasians because they are not taught by their parents, teachers, or society that they are any better than other people. This
is a double–edged sword because, while it allows some individuals to remain humble and socially compassionate, it blinds them to the fact the being
white allows to a myriad of benefits not given to those of a darker skin tone. Of the unconscious benefits of being Caucasian that McIntosh listed, the
two that I found most interesting were number seventeen ("I can talk with my mouth full and not have people put this down to my color") and number
forty–six ("I can choose blemish cover or bandages in 'flesh' color and have them more or less match my skin"). The former interested me the most
because I do not associate basic table manners with someone's racial background. If a person eats sloppily I normally put it down to them simply

White Male History Essay
When we talk about education we focus on those topics that have become near and dear to the hearts of this country: math, science, and whether or not
art programs are funded. It's all anyone ever talks about, the calculators and the paintbrushes. But a part of the american education system that does not
receive nearly enough emphasis is the social studies and history department. It's almost a null topic for everyone: the kids just need to learn this so
they can understand how things work. But no one ever looks closely enough at the material because it is boring. And I agree, white male history is
boring. An endless parade of Jean, Jon, and John inventing that new thing and changing the world? Count me out. But in this new era of true
multiculturalism I have discovered just how vibrant history can be. School curriculums focus on an endless cycle of white men and then throw in a few
white women (suffragettes), one – or two if its an AP class– black men (MLK and Malcolm X), and two black women (Harriet Tubman and Rosa
Parks). But those names are probably about .001% of what is discussed in a basic level history course. I'm lucky come from a school district that
implemented an 'ancient cultures' section of the curriculum where we went over some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's different, more impactful and more damaging, to admit that white people quite literally changed the facts to ensure social reproduction of those
racial and gender based hierarchies that perpetuated unchallenged domination for so long. Or maybe it wasn't unchallenged, maybe there were people
who spoke out before suffrage and civil rights and stonewall – maybe there were millions. I wouldn't know, because no one ever though it important

Dead White Males Essay
Dead White Males is an extremely controversial text as it presents the issues of choosing ideologies in the twenty–first century. Questioning the effects
of the media, the academic world and exploring the study of 'dead white males', such as Shakespeare, the play is critical of both liberal humanism and
post–structuralists views as it brings up the issues with both ideologies. Williamson uses characters such as Col, Sarah and Swain and their public and
private appearances to lead Angela to the conclusion that there is a basic human nature which allows for decisions and freedom of choice.
Portrayed as the Grandfather of the main character Angela, Col demonstrates how his public and private appearances show that there is a basic human

In both her public and private appearances, Sarah is a strong feminist who is quite vocal about her opinions. This is seen as she is more of a
dominant character, especially in her marriage to Martin. This nature is shown when Sarah is arguing with Grace that Angela does not need a man
to make her happy. "Because unless she's unusually lucky, the best she can hope for is a man who will expect her to work full time and to function
as a concubine and housekeeper and whose skills of communication will be such she'd be better off sharing her life with a Golden Retriever" (Act
1). This shows the public version of Sarah and how vigorous she is in expressing her feelings. As her mother, it is expected that Sarah's ideologies
would be carried on in Angela however due to Swain's teachings, Angela starts to question her mother's ideologies. She also finds it tiring hearing about
how tough it has been on her mother working in a male dominated society such as marketing. This makes Angela almost resent her mother as she
sees as a mother who neglected her as she was busy whinging about her work. This tough exterior however is broken down in the private interview
where Sarah reveals her nurturing nature for Angela as a result of her biological makeup. This is represented in the private interviews when Angela ask
Sarah if she regretted having a

White: Male Privilege
3.What is White (male) privilege? Discuss the core components of White privilege and provide some examples.
White (male) privilege comprises of having more access to resources, having normative assumptions of self–worth, and escaping consequences like
being discriminated against just on the basis of one's race (Neville, Spanierman, & Lewis, 2012). There are seven core components of White (male)
privilege (Neville, Spanierman, & Lewis, 2012). The first core component is that While (male) privilege differentially benefits Whites on the basis of
social group membership, including class, gender, and sexual orientation. Further, differentially benefits Whites, means that Whites benefits vary based
on their social membership group. An example ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second core component includes both macro–level expressions and micro–level expressions. Macro–level expressions is the social benefit of being
a member of the racial status quo by earning higher average salaries and having more availability to the newer technology. Micro–level expressions are
personal actions and feelings that are associated with the sense of entitlement. Macro–level expressions are at the institution level and include schools
and healthcare, while micro–level expressions are at the individual level and include traits and entitlement (Neville, Spanierman, & Lewis, 2012). A
third core component of White (male) privilege is that it includes unearned advantages. Unearned advantages are those that individuals unintentionally
or intentionally benefits from the macro–level and micro–level privileges offered to them based on the racial group they are members of (Neville,
Spanierman, & Lewis, 2012). A fourth core component is that it permits immunity to selected social ills. This includes being less likely to get
discriminated against because of their racial group membership. An example of this would be a White male getting in less trouble with the legal
system because of the racial group they belong to (Neville,

Social Pressure For Cis White Straight Males
MOGAI people are underrepresented in Computer Science and Computer engineering due to many of the same reasons why women are
underrepresented: the amount of social pressure for cis–white–straight–conservative–males (CWSCMs) to go into STEM and for those not CWSCMs
to pursue more "fitting" positions and fields; the amount of "brogrammer," "brogamer," misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and "straight
male" dominance in STEM and tech fields and culture; and finally the amount of inequitable barriers to STEM and tech fields. This is entirely
unethical and needs to be changed greatly to improve STEM and tech fields, along with giving equity to MOGAI individuals and the community. In
addition, many argue that these demands would be "special" or "extra" rights, which is inaccurate as this assumes the actions needed to boost
non–CWSCM people to equitable positions would cause an inequitable situation for CWSCMs.
Discussion
A 2015 report of "Queer in STEM: Workplace Experiences Reported in a National Survey of LGBTQA Individuals in Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics Careers" found the data gathered "suggests a broader phenomenon of gendered culture in STEM workplaces – in fields
with fewer women, the climate may be less comfortable for anyone who fails to conform to a straight male gender presentation." This supports the
argument that the STEM community actively wards off anyone that is MOGAI from participation or inclusion. Furthermore, "a lack of

White Male Privilege Analysis
1. To be quite honest, I am shocked by the article's hyperbolization of the concept of "white male privilege". Make no mistake about it, in general,
certain groups absolutely do have it easier than others. However, we've all been dealt a hand, so to speak, and as a result everyone has a discrete set of
privileges AND disadvantages.
2. The statistic with respect to the top 1 percent having the same amount of wealth as the bottom 95 percent caught my attention, and it directly relates
to my previous answer. The reality is that the one privilege that trumps all others is wealth. So as long the public spotlight is on trivial issues, and not

Sexism And The White Male Gaze Analysis
The theme for this art exhibit will be "Racism, Sexism, and the White Male Gaze." The main philosopher focused on within this exhibit will be
Michael Philips, with credit to his work "Racist Acts and Racist Humor." Philips's concept of "Basic Racist Acts," acts that either are done with the
intention of hurting a member of an ethnic group or can be expected to hurt a member of an ethnic group because they are a member of said ethnic
group, will be heavily referenced throughout the proposal of this exhibit. Supporting philosophers include Laura Mulvey and Paul C. Taylor, who
further delve into sexism and racism, respectively. Two important questions are intended to be posed by this exhibit: 1. How is racism portrayed
differently throughout the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For definition of the male gaze, this area of the exhibit will focus on Laura Mulvey's "Woman as Image, Man as Bearer of the Look." In this piece,
Mulvey discusses two theories: voyeurism and fetishistic scopophilia. To briefly explain, voyeurism involves deriving pleasure from the assertion of
control, usually done by a male. On the other hand, fetishistic scopophilia transforms the female entity into an object whose sole purpose is to
pleasure. An area of this exhibit include an arcade machine of the game "Mortal Kombat" to depict the difference in the way males and females are
drawn and portrayed in video games. Male characters within this game are provided armor, or clothing at the least, that covers their vital organs and
suits their fighting style. It is obvious the intention of the male characters' clothing is functionality. However, the same can not be said about their
female counterparts. Not only is their clothing minimal, their fighting style is also hypersexualized. This video game is almost the epitome of
Mulvey's fetishistic scopophilia. Next to this will be side–by–side showcasing of famous superhero costumes such as Wonder Woman vs. Superman
and Catwoman vs. the Joker. Again, these costumes reinforce fetishistic scopophilia as female characters are purposely clothed with minimal armor
that accentuates a female's breasts and butt. Music videos are another reliable source for elaborating on fetishistic scopophilia. For instance, the
popular rock band Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" reduces the band's teacher to nothing but a sexual object to whom they sexually fantasize about
instead of respect and learn from. Moreover, the famous "Stacy's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne reduces the band's friend's mom to a sexual object
for visual pleasure. The novel "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov will be used to further detail how males view women, even young teens, as subjects for
their pleasure,

Who Is Alpha-Male In Hemingway's Hills Like White Elephants?
In Ernest Hemingway's "Hills like White Elephants", the American proves to be an egotistical, alpha–male when he exercises his apparent authority
over his young, pregnant girlfriend Jig. Firstly, he brings up the topic of having an abortion and tried to convince Jig into compliance by assuring her
that it is simple operation and that "they are just letting the air out" (Hemingway 2). The fact that he refers to the unborn child as air just proves the
fact that he really does not want the burden of having a child. Likewise, he does not call the operation an abortion, almost as if he is trying to simplify
the seriousness. He himself is forceful, relentless and attempts to assert dominance over her by forcing her into having the abortion. Secondly,

Like Alabama in the 1930s, Texas in the 1950s was a place where separate never meant equal. It was a place where "colored" water fountains did not
spout brightly colored water as a child might expect, but stood as symbols of racism, which meant indignity, shame, and humiliation for some and
indifference, false pride, and hate for others.
At my old school, my teachers carefully avoided any mention of race, class, or gender. Like Scout, I learned those lessons from my family. When
Scout comes to her father with questions about human behavior, he doesn 't give her advice on what to say or do. Instead, he tells her that the "trick"
to understanding another person is to consider things from his or her point of view. For nearly 15 years, that has been a hard thing to conquer. We trust
each other to wrestle with complex choices in the past and present so that they will better understand the social mores of our time. We encourage them

They were manly bearers of babies with no real hint of being feminine at all. On that same page, page 33, there is a picture of the women in
Allison's family. They are shown as women who do not care for the rules of etiquette when it comes to sitting up straight and taking care of one's
appearances. They look like they have seen dark places and came back a little different each time, unlike higher class women who are protected from
the dark by the men they marry. Female masculinity is represented in the lower class families who have single–parent households and not enough
income to provide as well as buy what makes a woman feminine, like make up. These women work hard every day in Allison's family to give their
children the best with the least amount of money. She describes these women as "manlike" allowing and image of a female with more muscle, a
harder set face, and hands calloused by a day at work.
Masculinity is also different along intersectional lines of race. It is not a overgeneralization that all men have to follow the same masculine identity
or they are not considered masculine men. In the chapter Dude You're a Fag written by C.J. Pascoe, he goes to a high school where the term "fag" is
being thrown around loosely among the male sex of the school. However, this is more dominantly seen in the cis–white men of the school and not their
African American counterparts. With being a man

Male Dominance In Hills Like White Elephants And The...
"Hills Like White Elephants" written by Ernest Hemingway and "The Unwanted Child" by Mary Clearman Blew both carry a theme of male
dominance. The girl's role is diminished due to the actions of both genders. Within both "Hills Like White White Elephants" and "The Unwanted Child"
the male takes on the dominant role when the women choose to be independent or remain inferior. "Hills Like White Elephants" tells a tale of a young
girl who travels with an American, who impregnates her. Throughout the story, they continue to bicker back and forth about whether or not keeping the
baby is the better option. The male shows dominance by constantly making the girl recognize that things are going to be much different. If they do have

In 1958, men were naturally looked at as dominant. Because of this, the woman, Mary, was told by her mother in law and grandmother in law that
she should drop out of school and work to support the husband. The mother and grandma made it very clear that school was not a necessity,
"Unlike my in laws, who have not hesitated to tell me I should go work as a typist or waitress to support my husband..." (Clearman 45). This quote
shows that although Mary had been working and had just completed her first year of college, her efforts were not needed as long as she had her
husband. In that era, having a child was exciting and thrilling. But, Mary did not want to have a child because it could possibly ruin her dream of
having an education. When at the doctor's office, the doctor congratulated Mary for being pregnant but when the eighth month came around the
corner, she started to second guess her choice. When the doctor told her that if she did not want the baby he could give it away to someone who did,
she replied, "I want it, I lied.." (Clearman 54). This quote states that she did not want to keep the child but because her family reassured her that
having the baby is essential to being a better wife. Therefore the time period of the story influenced the societal perspective of pregnancy and a
woman's role in the household, as it further emphasized their inferiority to

Iron Lady: The Dominance Of Women
Dominance is considered to be someone who has power over a certain grouped of people, someone who can be feared or looked up to. Society
usually illustrates a white male with dominance in high corporate positions. Women, on the other hand are not seen by society to be dominated and
leading people. Our society already views males as a dominated gender and their power as normal or even masculine. In Johnson's article, he states that
the prime minister of Great Britain was called the "Iron Lady" for her dominance and leadership. This statement illustrates greatly that society does not
see a women as dominated or even sees a woman in that nature as a leader, and therefore must prove herself worthy to society that she as a women can

The Office is comical television show, it still illustrates identification towards white males and racism towards non–whites. Numerous jokes on the

Walter Dean Myers's Monster And All-White Male Stereotypes
Monster by Walter Dean Myers is a novel about a black teenage boy, named Steve Harmon, who is accused of being an accessory to a robbery and
the murder of Mr. Nesbitt. During Steve's time in jail he decides that diary entries were not working for him, so he begins recording his experience in
screenplay form. Personally, I found Monster really interesting because the novel helped me realize how people are viewed in the eyes of others in
certain settings such as, jail and school; the novel addresses stereotypes of black men being falsely accused and getting sent to jail or prison for crimes
they did not commit, and both novels, Monster and The Absolutely True Diary Of The Part–Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, address racism that is not

Back in 1983 Glenn Ford, a black male, was convicted, by an all–white jury, for the robbery and murder of Isadore Rozeman, who was found shot to
death behind the counter of his jewelry shop. In 2000, the Louisiana Supreme Court ordered a hearing on Glenn's claim and after credible
evidence surfaced that supported the fact that Glenn did not take part in Isadore's murder, and in 2014 he was a free man. I believe that many
black males, like Glenn and Steve, are thought to always be the ones who do something wrong, especially when it comes to the law. "I thought
you're supposed to be innocent until you're proven guilty?" "That's true, but in reality it depends on how the jury sees the case" (Myres, 79).
These statements explain how Steve finds out how he is really being judged by the jury. Which led me to think, are we ever judged guilty before
given the chance to prove ourselves? Moreover, in society they immediately view black males as criminals based off of the way they look, the
clothes they wear and of course their skin colour, the jury judges them before they hear their pleas of innocence. Steve was accused of participating in
a robbery and murder, not because he was the look out but mainly because he is black. Therefore, it is clear that due to stereotypes jurors think

Male And White Privilege In Arthur Miller's Focus
In Arthur Miller's Focus, society gives many conferred advantages to people whose identity accords to being "white". Mr. Newman, Focus's main
character, does not give thought to many of these advantages until he finds himself losing them. Peggy McIntosh's discussion on male and white
privilege exposes various types of these privilege. McIntosh lists many of the advantages she can identify and brings to light effects that advantages
can have for both people who have them and those who are unfortunate enough to be without them. She says, "... some privileges make me feel at home

Heroin Drugs And Its Effects On The Lives Of Young White...
Heroin is making a comeback in the United States and is highly prevalent in certain areas. The heroin epidemic is sweeping across the Midwest, and
claiming the lives of young white males. It is very different from the 1960's use of heroin, and is now typically used because of its low cost and
previous opioid addictions to other prescription drugs. Young white males in many different communities are becoming hooked because of the careless
use of pain pills prescribed or taking them from parents' medicine cabinets. The communities include rural towns, big cities, and suburbs all across the
country.
"The rate of past–year heroin use among non–Hispanic whites increased 114.3% from 1.4 per 1,000 in 2002–2004 to 3.0 per 1,000 in 2011–2013"
(CDC, 2015). Furthermore, heroin abuse has more than doubled among young adults in the past decade (CDC, 2015), and the problem of heroin use and
addiction is becoming rampant in areas where it was never a problem before. More and more, young white males, are becoming the face of heroin
abuse. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "Between 2002 and 2013, the rate of heroin–related overdose deaths nearly
quadrupled, and more than 8,200 people died in 2013" (2015). All of these shocking statistics beg the question, "why?" What is it about young white
males as a population that makes them so susceptible to becoming heroin addicts?

The Educational Benefits of White Male Privilege
What is learned in school, be it public or private, determines, for the most part, what position an individual will find themselves in – in the future. In
"White Privilege and Male Privilege," Peggy McIntosh, an author known for doing something that is rarely done in the white community––speaking of
her race––makes references to education, to her privileged education, to support her argument on white and male privilege. Sometimes I wonder what
society would look like without education; would there be any norms, or rules? Education is so deeply instituted into most Americans' lives that those

The American Revolution: Building a Nation to Benefit...
When the American Revolutionary War ended, it did not mark the end of the American Revolution as a whole. Rather it marked the first step in a long
and difficult process of forming a nation with a strong central government. Even before the Revolutionary War began, leaders of the thirteen American
colonies recognized the importance and necessity of some form of centralized government. The Second Continental Congress, held in 1775 , was the
first serious attempt to bring organization and unity to the thirteen individual and self– interested American colonies. At the Second Continental
Congress, a committee was formed to produce the framework of a governmental system. The result, the Articles of Confederation, were weak and

Finally, in November of 1777, Congress accepted a very different version of the Articles of Confederation than Dickinson had originally intended upon.
The Articles that were finally agreed upon overly protected the independence of states and did not supply Congress with the necessary power to run a
unified country. In its existence under the Articles of Confederation, theUnited States were anything but "united." Each state basically acted as an
independent country with it's own government and own set of rules. The Articles were faulty and unclearly thought out in many ways, which left the
United States unorganized and on the verge of chaos for several years to come.
The most blatant and detrimental of the Articles' flaws was that they did not grant the Congress the ability to levy taxes. The only way for Congress
to raise money was to ask the individual states for donations, and this left Congress extremely low on funds. During the years of the Revolutionary
War the United States Congress incurred a very large war debt. The Congress owed $12 million to foreign countries, $27 million to the American
people plus $12.5 million in interest. The individual states owed $21 million. The Congress was over $50 million in debt. Without the ability to levy
taxes, the Congress was left with virtually no possible way of repaying their huge war debts. The American people began to get angry and uneasy with
the unpaid debts.

Colonialism and Imperialism
The European, White Male vs. the Other in Heart of Darkness
The novella Heart of Darkness has, since it's publication in 1899, caused much controversy and invited much criticism. While some have hailed it's
author, Joseph Conrad as producing a work ahead of it's time in it's treatment and criticism of colonialist practices in the Congo, others, most notably
Chinua Achebe, have criticized it for it's racist and sexist construction of cultural identity. Heart of Darkness can therefore be described as a text of it's
time, as the cultural identity of the dominant society, that is, the European male is constructed in opposition to "the other", "the other" in Heart of

and even when they are given the opportunity to speak, Conrad constructs Africans as being largely inarticulate. Thus confirming the superiority of the
white race.
Conrad further marginalises and degrades the African characters and race not only through the denial of language but also the denial of human form.
When Marlow first sees Africans in a small boat on the water, he describes them in terms of their "muscles", "bones" and "white teeth", despite also
recognizing a vitality and spirit. The disembodiment continues when Marlow encounters the chain gang at the outer station. It is when seeking "shade"

they are no longer deemed to have monetary value, or economic viability. Instead of feeling revulsion's at this, Marlow dehumanizes the Africans,
describing them as "bundles of acute angles" and noting how they drink on "all fours". Thus by denying the Africans their humanity, Conrad constructs

The House Of Burgesses: White Male Dominance In The United...
In American history, "white men" are inherently dominate. In all affairs including family, ideology, culture, politics, and more, white men are
superior. This is due to the creation of the United States, and the roots of its people: Europeans. The United States was built by Europeans, who are
inherently white. Even the most substantial figures of history were once British. George Washington for example, was not always American, he was a
British soldier before he became an American president. In general, Americans did not just appear; it was a progression of generations and war that
created the term we now use to identify people of the United States, Americans.
Furthermore, politics played an eminent role in the development of a white supremacy attitude that is seen throughout the greater part of American
history. Politics enabled "white men" to dominate history. The House of Burgesses is a prime example of the establishment of... Show more content on

Egalitarian Slave Families Analysis
Mariela Velasco
Jill Fields
History 101
05 October 2017
"Egalitarian Slave Families"
Neither patriarchal nor matriarchal marriages existed in slave families since all slaves, male and female, held almost no power over themselves let
alone the other gender. It was the plantation owner who virtually had all the power to control every aspect of his or her slave, regardless of gender.
Since childhood, both female and male, slaves encountered injustices and misfortunes that showed no favoritism for one particular gender over the
other– both males and females were brought up together essentially the same way; preparing and waiting for the life of hardship and strenuous work
that awaited for them (White 91– 118). In her book Ar'n't I a Women Deborah Gray White illustrates extensive amount of slave narratives
demonstrating the huge amount of control white owners had over their slaves as well as the slave norms by which slaves were brought up and
married; and therefore proving that she is indeed right when she states that "slave families were unusually egalitarian." Slave families can be
considered egalitarian because one partner virtually had no "dominance" over the other one as it was the white owner who "controlled" and
"dominated" almost every aspect of the slave's lives. For example, slave marriages were not like the "traditional" white marriages since these did not
offer the benefits traditional white marriages brought such as economic assistance and male protection

Drosophila Melanogaster Lab Report Essay

In most kitchens the small flies that are found are Drosophila Melanogaster also called fruit fly. They are often brought in by ripened tomatoes, grapes
and other perishable items from the garden. Drosophila melanogaster is a little two winged insect about 3mm long two winged insect that belongs to
the Diptera, the order of the flies. The drosophila egg is about half a millimeter long. Fertilization takes about one day the embryo to develop and hatch
into a worm–like larva. The larva eats and grows continuously, after two days as a third in star larva; it moults one more time to form an immobile

F1 Predictions
For our first generation (F1) of flies we chose to cross apterous (+) females and white–eye (w) males. We predicted that the mutation would be sex
linked recessive. So if the female was the sex with the mutation then all females would be wild type heterozygous. Heterozygous is a term used when
the two genes for a trait are opposite. The males would all be white eye since they only have one X chromosome. If the males were the sex that had the
mutation then all the flies would be wild type but the females would be heterozygous.
F1 Outcomes
From the cross white eye males with wild females, our results were we got both phenotypes in the males as well as the females to be wild type.
F2 Predictions
Based upon observation of the F1 generation, we hypothesize that the inheritance of the white–eye (W) mutation is sex–linked and recessive wild type.
For the F2 generation the phenotype that was obtained is as followed. See Figure1.

1900s. In Hemingway's short, Jig is oppressed by her lover known only as "The American," whereas, the main character in The Chrysanthemums, Elisa
Allen, feels the weight of oppression from society (male dominated) as a whole. Although the driving force of the two women's subjugation varies
slightly, their emotional responses to such are what differentiate the two. Throughout Hills Like White Elephants, the American refers to his girlfriend

with the decision, it isn't long until she relinquishes her objection, giving him authority over her morality and judgment. In The Chrysanthemum,
Elisa Allen's character is clearly the result of oppression in a male dominated community. Early on, Steinbeck makes it a point to establish her
femininity (or lack there of) as the result of her marriage to, and life with, a common rancher and farmer: "Her figure looked blocked and heavy in
her gardening costume, a man's black hat pulled down over her eyes, clodhopper shoes, a figured print dress almost completely covered by a big
corduroy apron with four big pockets to hold the snips, the trowel and scratcher, the seeds and the knife she worked with" (pg 1611). Elisa has
obviously taken on a more masculine façade due to her years spent on the farm. However, it seems apparent, both early on and later in the story that
she has tried to maintain what femininity she has. She does not help with the ranch or the cultivation of the orchard, but rather tends to her own garden.
Her reportedly stellar chrysanthemums represent her delicate side. By maintaining and ensuring a yearly exemplary flourish, Elisa sustains and
nourishes her suppressed womanly essence. Although Steinbeck reveals that, "The

White Privilege And Male Privilege
To begin with, reverse–sexism, or sexism against cisgender men, simply does not exist. Women, non–binary people, trans–persons, and even other men
cannot be sexist against men. Sexism is a form of oppression and cisgender men are not oppressed the way that women, persons who identify as
non–binary, or those who are transsexual are. That is not to say that there is no prejudice or discrimination that exists toward men, because there
definitely is, but it is not sexism. Sexism is part prejudice, but it is also one part power and that power is always in a man's favor. They have always
had the upper–hand against women, even in the "progressive" society that exists today. Male privilege has existed for centuries, but it was not
widely discussed until around 1988 when Peggy McIntosh, a scholar working for Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, wrote a paper
titled, "White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to See Correspondences Through Work in Women's Studies,". The paper
takes a look both at white and male privilege, with a long list of 46 examples of McIntosh's own, self–recognized privilege as a white woman. The
paper sparked a massive controversy and extremely opposing opinions on privilege. David Horowitz, an American writer with deep conservative
views and values, deemed McIntosh one of "America's ten wackiest feminists". Despite the mostly right wing criticism of the paper, it provoked more

Peggy McIntosh's White Privilege And Male Privilege Essay
Privileges are things that a person receives that gives them an advantage over most people (Merriam–Webster). These are benefits that only certain
people receive for being in a certain group or discourse. Peggy McIntosh, director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, wrote
"White Privilege and Male Privilege" and states "I think whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privileges, as males are taught not to
recognize male privilege" (605). She argues that whites and males receive certain privileges, yet they do not even notice them. This shows that
different races and women are still put at a disadvantage, but the people who receive the benefits are blind to the problem. Many people will argue that

They also shelter it by keeping it a secret from their own so they never see it as an advantage. Shannon Sullivan wrote the book "Revealing
Whiteness: The Unconscious Habits of Racial Privilege". She does agree with McIntosh that whites do in fact receive these hidden privileges. In her
book she wrote "Blithely wrapped up in a white world, white people often do not see their own ignorance and cannot be faulted for not addressing
it..." (18). Sullivan explains that white people do not realize that they are receiving these certain benefits for just being white. They also can't fix
this problem until they realize that they are privileged. The privileges that they receive are mainly social benefits, which probably why they are
hard to see. McIntosh give an example by saying, "I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or
harassed" (607). This is one of the many over looked privileges that people don't seem to notice. In the book "White Teachers/Diverse Classrooms",
written by Landsman, Julie, and Lewis, they also support this idea by giving an example of this certain privilege not applying to a person of color,
even to the president of Brown University, Ruth Simmons. Simmons was "followed and question as she walk the aisles" of a major department store
(11). Despite the fact that she was president of Brown University, she was stilled harassed at clothing store

Drosophila melanogaster – Sex linkage and inheritance of genes through cross breeding
Abstract
This experiment looks at the relationship between genes, generations of a population and if genes are carried from one generation to another. By
studying Drosophila melanogaster, starting with a parent group we crossed a variety of flies and observe the characteristics of the F1 generation. We
then concluded that sex–linked genes and autosomal genes could indeed be traced through from the parent generation to the F1 generation.

some don't. Sex linkage is the condition in which a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Care was taken to not let the immobilised Drosophila drown in the white media until they were flying again.
The vial was then labeled accordingly with the type of cross (Male Vg, Female W) and the date. The date is important as the Drosophila complete a
life cycle within approximately 2 weeks from the mating day. This vial became known as the parent generation or (P).
The vial was then kept in a moderate temperature out of the sun and by the end of the first week the parent generation had laid eggs, hatched and the
next generation were between the larva stage and the pupa stage. At this point, the parent generations was no longer required and were decanted out
into ethyl alcohol, killed and disposed of. They did not need to be scored (inspected) as we already knew what they were.
We then kept the vial with the juvenile Drosophila for another 2 weeks in the same conditions as above and found that the F1 generation had hatched
and laid eggs of their own. We then decanted the F1 generation into alcohol to kill them and kept them aside to score. The vial containing the new
generation F2 of Drosophila was then kept for use in a further experiment.
The F1 generation that we had just decanted was then moved to a dissecting microscope for scoring, this generation included 20 Drosophila flies that
we could then inspect for different traits using the microscope (traits being the sex of

Literature And Everyday Life : Toni Morrison 's The Dark,...
From the role it plays in literature to its looming existence in our everyday lives, race has an undeniable influence on many aspects of our lives. Toni
Morrison and Peggy McIntosh, a writer and an activist respectively, both have the urge to understand this presence and impact of race in literature and
everyday life specifically. Through self–reflection and attempts to see from others' perspectives, both Morrison and McIntosh manage to answer their
own questions regarding race and its role in literature and everyday life while articulating their discoveries and intentions in similar and comparable
ways. Both of their pieces, "Playing in the Dark," and "White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to see Correspondences

American and white status in America. Toni Morrison specifically delves deep into the role "Africanism" plays in American literature in her piece,

White Male Patriarchy

  • 1. White Male Patriarchy Within the cultural context of society, the systematic structure is defined by White male patriarchy that sanctions Black males to convey the way in which they have been socialized and institutionalized to think, perform, and behave when self– identifying as male. However, the social order of society is structured by a historical system centered among race–based superiority. This notion impedes the development of a true independent identity. Consequently, a struggle arises for distinctiveness, respect, and power. For Black men there becomes a conflict with who he is versus how he is projected in society. Although race conjures biological and phenotypical characteristics, there is no necessary relationship. Yet, race is a social and historical process, it is both "a dimension of human representation and an element of social structure" (Omi and Winant 124). Subsequently, contention arises with the attempt to assimilate black male identity with the ethics and conduct of the White majority. Charles Mills argues this point with the concept of the "somatic norm". Mills writes, "...in early racist theories one finds not only moral but aesthetic judgments, with beauty and fair races pitted against ugly and dark races" (Mills 61). What Mills is describing is the standard by which other bodies are judged. Although what is being judged is not narrowed to beauty. The somatic norm is correlated with intellectual and moral capacities. With this approach the black race is considered a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Black Women : A White Male Patriarchal World Black women are showing why they belong in entertainment. Whether it's acting, writing, or producing they are well needed. Shonda Lynn Rhimes is an American television producer, screenwriter, and author. She is known for shows such as Grey 's Anatomy, its spin –off Private Practice, and the political thriller series Scandal, all of which have aired on ABC. I will be using Scandal to analyze the ideology of a black dominant women in a white male patriarchal world. The show is centered on protagonist Olivia Pope who is a professional fixer. If there is any crisis, problem, or scandal Olivia Pope is always the first person to call. Kerry Washington who plays Olivia Pope is the first black woman in forty years to star in a network drama in this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Early in the show they give up her biggest weakness, which is her affair with President Fitzgerald Grants. He is also married with children so in these moments you see Olivia when she is most fragile. This shows hegemonic ideology because President Fitz make things happen how he wants to. With the fact that she is black and he is white alone make things hard enough. Olivia is the president's secret, at least to the American public and the fact that he is so much more powerful just make things complicated. Olivia who is viewed by her friends and families as strong and stern has been very hard at making decisions when it comes to the president. The fact that she spent so much time pinning after a man who says she is the love of his life, but ultimately goes home to his wife every night is rather confusing. The president shows how he uses his power to weaken Olivia Pope. Scandal shows the defiance of male patriarchal ideology by Olivia Pope with which she goes back to every episode. We watch in scandal as President Fitz continues to fail to express his love to Olivia Pope. The only way we see him expressing himself is through his sexual activities. In which Olivia denies wanting to until she finally gives in. There is a constant reaffirmation of the patriotic struggle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparison Of White Upper Class Male And Female In early 1800s society, there was an "Unequal power relation between male and female". Men were traditionally seen as being the dominant, physically stronger and socially more powerful in terms of status: "traditional masculinity is a strength, rationality, stoicism and self–reliance". Women's position in society and within their homes was portrayed as subservient, obedient to their fathers, brothers and male relatives and their husbands throughout their lives. Fagin: stereotypical man Fagin's power lies within him being the elite in a criminal group; his "masculine' qualities position in an area of 'great and dangerous power". White upper class males are seen as being the far more superior group then the lower social class. Whereas it could be argued that "A masculine gendering is supposed to evoke positive connotation", the men 's in Oliver Twist are most typically linked to violence. The greed of Fagin is shown when he says 'if you do it well, a pound my dear" this gives a reflection of his character in the story. His portrayed as being arrogant as he uses children for his own good as they are seen to steal money for him. His arrogant side is shown through his treatment of the children "what 's your name you hardened scoundrel" indicates his dominating behaviour toward the children as he has control over them and he doesn't let Oliver speak "what is his name officer" show his controlling character indicate how people are scared of the way he presents and deceive ... • 4. African American Males are Following Trends of White... Recently, the media has caused many stereotypes due to portraying African American males playing feminine roles. This perspective depicts men of color wearing attire outside of the stereotypical sagging pants and oversized t–shirts. It depicts an educated man with social class and sophistication. To date, society holds African American men to rigid stereotypes and a high standard of masculinity. However, once a man of color steps outside societal stereotypes and into the perspective reflected by this new lens, far too often his own race rejects him on the grounds of not molding into the same rigid stereotypes that prevents his growth. Stripping the young man who adopts this new perspective of his ability to identify with his own race, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Growing up, Perry suffered "brutal physical abuse from his father and severe sexual abuse from several adults" (Tyler ). Dressing as a drag queen to fulfill the role of his most reputable and recognizable character, Madea, a no–nonsense, thuggishly tough matriarch, Tyler Perry flirts with gender roles and challenges societal beliefs on masculinity within the black world. In Forbes' most recent list of the world's one hundred most powerful celebrities, Perry is highlighted at twenty–two, alongside Hollywood's most notable celebrities, including his close friend and reigning champion of Forbes' number one spot for five consecutive years–Oprah Winfrey. Despite his vast success, Tyler Perry still receives flak from judgmental skeptics who challenge his masculinity as a man of color. Due to his acting role as Madea, some skeptics believe Mr. Perry is less of a man as he dresses in drag for a character in his plays and is suspected to be homosexual. This not only points him out individually, but it also creates stereotypes grounded from this source of media to the African American males. Grounded with integrity, black culture must celebrate rather than condemn every aspect of its people. African Americans must be informed of the subliminal messages being passed through movies and Television shows. In order to dismiss the inaccuracy of the way colored males are viewed, the media must expand and show more educated African Americans men ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. White Males And The American Writers In this nature writing course and in all my literature courses there haven't been many African American writers represented. This isn't because they don't exist, but because the more commonly known writers have the attributes of being more respected, and are widely accepted writers in American literature, who majority of the time are white males like Thoreau and Leopold. These are just examples, and they are good writers but there are also good African American writers that deserve just as much representation when teaching college courses. There's a greater choice of writers besides having the same works of authors we've already read throughout our experience in studying literature. There needs to be a better variety of cultures represented in literature, white males shouldn't always be the most read and studied authors in public institutions. Minorities should be represented too, especially African American writers since they played such a great role in the American history, and endured so much oppression from the society they've lived in. In this course, Nature Writing at metropolitan University, we had a variety of different races, but the Blackrace didn't get the representation they deserved. There was a writing titled, "from a black boy" by Wright, and it wasn't a good representation of Black writers in America. I remember reading it and questioning what I just read; because it didn't have any emotion or deeper meaning like most the other readings we studied. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. White Male Privilege: Article Analysis I was just looking at my social media homepage and then I saw that #Turner was trending. I couldn't remember any celebrity named turner, so, I clicked the name and a story came up. It was about a white male athlete in Stanford University. The title initially attracted me, the title was "The Stanford Rape Case Illustrates the Toxicity of White Male Privilege". The topic literally catches my attention and I was eager to read this article that this white male privilege still exist. I wanted to know about what the situation is about? When I was reading this article, it was basically about a white male student who is studying in Stanford University and is an athlete. One night, he went out to party with his friend and he raped a drunk woman. So, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. I Am A White Male Frederick Isler EDU 310W Dr. Cummings 11–20–2015 CREED Paper My name is Frederick Isler, I am 20 years old and I am currently enrolled in the Elementary Education bachelor program at Buffalo State College. I am a white male therefore I have never really faced many ethnically or sexually diverse situations where I was treated poorly or differently. I am a Roman Catholic and this set some of the stepping stones in many cases for certain views on things in life. I taught at the catholic program that my church offers for a couple years and am very involved with helping the youth in the parish. This is where I believe my love or passion for teaching came from. While being at the youth group I learned being involved in our community and helping out others truly lead to success in life. I believe that children are our future and deserve a voice and I strongly believe that it is the teachers who give the students the power to strengthen that voice with knowledge and education. I played sports growing up with two younger brothers, this gave me a competitive spirit that made me believe in myself in order to do things if I put my mind too it. I have coached basketball and softball for over four years and just recently won championships in both respected leagues, one being a youth basketball league and the other a church softball league. Teaching these kids and watching them grow really gave me a passion for wanting to teach for a career. I firmly believe that every single student ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. White Male Power vs the Other Abstract Thomas King's story, "'You'll Never Believe What Happened' Is Always a Great Way To Start", " Race, Class and Gender in Asian America" by Yen Le Espiritu and " Zebra: Growing up Black and White in Canada" by Lawrence Hill all illustrate how people of minority deal with their intersectionality of gender, race and ethnicity and their limitations that the dominant ideology of the west puts on them. Introduction Since the beginning of time stories were a major influence in the ways generations would pass down knowledge to the younger generations. The power of stories and storytelling teaches individuals valuable lessons and good morals that help mold them into reasonable citizens. In western society children are exposed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though that was not the case, the employer in this case is a man and has a bias against women, so he decides to use that as an excuse so his sexism will never be caught. As in a global perspective some parts in the world like Afghanistan women do not have the right to vote and their place in society is to take care of the family. As a way of overcoming this obstacle in western society is to educate more individuals that this is happening so individuals will want to protest for change to their government. So the governments can get involved and implant rules based on equality for men and women in managerial positions. That will ultimately start the process of less inequality likely to happen in the work environment. King's mother deals with her ethnicity, as it is a major part in her intersectionality. Her skin colour was always a reminder in the story as it is constantly reminded those individuals of minority, "White was more than just a colour" (King, 2) King's mothers intersectionality provides readers insight that the stories and the experiences she goes through may be different than another person because her intersectionality of race, gender, and ethnicity may different than another person. Through the words of Thomas King, he teaches his readers "Stories can control lives, for there is a part of me that has never been able to move past ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. White Privilege And Male Privilege In 1988, Peggy McIntosh wrote an article in the book Things Are Not What They Seem: Readings in Sociology entitled "White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to See Correspondences through Work in Women's Studies". Such a long title seems humorously unnecessary, is spite of the serious nature of its subject matter. In short, when McIntosh refers to "white privilege" she means that being of white decent allows her a set of assets at birth that people of color are not afforded, simply due to the light color of her skin. McIntosh proposes that white privilege is invisible to most Caucasians because they are not taught by their parents, teachers, or society that they are any better than other people. This is a double–edged sword because, while it allows some individuals to remain humble and socially compassionate, it blinds them to the fact the being white allows to a myriad of benefits not given to those of a darker skin tone. Of the unconscious benefits of being Caucasian that McIntosh listed, the two that I found most interesting were number seventeen ("I can talk with my mouth full and not have people put this down to my color") and number forty–six ("I can choose blemish cover or bandages in 'flesh' color and have them more or less match my skin"). The former interested me the most because I do not associate basic table manners with someone's racial background. If a person eats sloppily I normally put it down to them simply lacking essential etiquette ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. White Male History Essay When we talk about education we focus on those topics that have become near and dear to the hearts of this country: math, science, and whether or not art programs are funded. It's all anyone ever talks about, the calculators and the paintbrushes. But a part of the american education system that does not receive nearly enough emphasis is the social studies and history department. It's almost a null topic for everyone: the kids just need to learn this so they can understand how things work. But no one ever looks closely enough at the material because it is boring. And I agree, white male history is boring. An endless parade of Jean, Jon, and John inventing that new thing and changing the world? Count me out. But in this new era of true multiculturalism I have discovered just how vibrant history can be. School curriculums focus on an endless cycle of white men and then throw in a few white women (suffragettes), one – or two if its an AP class– black men (MLK and Malcolm X), and two black women (Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks). • 11. Dead White Males Essay Dead White Males is an extremely controversial text as it presents the issues of choosing ideologies in the twenty–first century. Questioning the effects of the media, the academic world and exploring the study of 'dead white males', such as Shakespeare, the play is critical of both liberal humanism and post–structuralists views as it brings up the issues with both ideologies. Williamson uses characters such as Col, Sarah and Swain and their public and private appearances to lead Angela to the conclusion that there is a basic human nature which allows for decisions and freedom of choice. Portrayed as the Grandfather of the main character Angela, Col demonstrates how his public and private appearances show that there is a basic human nature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In both her public and private appearances, Sarah is a strong feminist who is quite vocal about her opinions. This is seen as she is more of a dominant character, especially in her marriage to Martin. This nature is shown when Sarah is arguing with Grace that Angela does not need a man to make her happy. "Because unless she's unusually lucky, the best she can hope for is a man who will expect her to work full time and to function as a concubine and housekeeper and whose skills of communication will be such she'd be better off sharing her life with a Golden Retriever" (Act 1). This shows the public version of Sarah and how vigorous she is in expressing her feelings. As her mother, it is expected that Sarah's ideologies would be carried on in Angela however due to Swain's teachings, Angela starts to question her mother's ideologies. She also finds it tiring hearing about how tough it has been on her mother working in a male dominated society such as marketing. This makes Angela almost resent her mother as she sees as a mother who neglected her as she was busy whinging about her work. This tough exterior however is broken down in the private interview where Sarah reveals her nurturing nature for Angela as a result of her biological makeup. This is represented in the private interviews when Angela ask Sarah if she regretted having a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

White (male) privilege comprises of having more access to resources, having normative assumptions of self–worth, and escaping consequences like being discriminated against just on the basis of one's race (Neville, Spanierman, & Lewis, 2012). There are seven core components of White (male) privilege (Neville, Spanierman, & Lewis, 2012). The first core component is that While (male) privilege differentially benefits Whites on the basis of social group membership, including class, gender, and sexual orientation. Further, differentially benefits Whites, means that Whites benefits vary based on their social membership group. An example ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second core component includes both macro–level expressions and micro–level expressions. Macro–level expressions is the social benefit of being a member of the racial status quo by earning higher average salaries and having more availability to the newer technology. Micro–level expressions are personal actions and feelings that are associated with the sense of entitlement. Macro–level expressions are at the institution level and include schools and healthcare, while micro–level expressions are at the individual level and include traits and entitlement (Neville, Spanierman, & Lewis, 2012). A third core component of White (male) privilege is that it includes unearned advantages. Unearned advantages are those that individuals unintentionally or intentionally benefits from the macro–level and micro–level privileges offered to them based on the racial group they are members of (Neville, Spanierman, & Lewis, 2012). A fourth core component is that it permits immunity to selected social ills. This includes being less likely to get discriminated against because of their racial group membership. An example of this would be a White male getting in less trouble with the legal system because of the racial group they belong to (Neville, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Social Pressure For Cis White Straight Males MOGAI people are underrepresented in Computer Science and Computer engineering due to many of the same reasons why women are underrepresented: the amount of social pressure for cis–white–straight–conservative–males (CWSCMs) to go into STEM and for those not CWSCMs to pursue more "fitting" positions and fields; the amount of "brogrammer," "brogamer," misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and "straight male" dominance in STEM and tech fields and culture; and finally the amount of inequitable barriers to STEM and tech fields. This is entirely unethical and needs to be changed greatly to improve STEM and tech fields, along with giving equity to MOGAI individuals and the community. In addition, many argue that these demands would be "special" or "extra" rights, which is inaccurate as this assumes the actions needed to boost non–CWSCM people to equitable positions would cause an inequitable situation for CWSCMs. Discussion A 2015 report of "Queer in STEM: Workplace Experiences Reported in a National Survey of LGBTQA Individuals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Careers" found the data gathered "suggests a broader phenomenon of gendered culture in STEM workplaces – in fields with fewer women, the climate may be less comfortable for anyone who fails to conform to a straight male gender presentation." For definition of the male gaze, this area of the exhibit will focus on Laura Mulvey's "Woman as Image, Man as Bearer of the Look." In this piece, Mulvey discusses two theories: voyeurism and fetishistic scopophilia. To briefly explain, voyeurism involves deriving pleasure from the assertion of control, usually done by a male. On the other hand, fetishistic scopophilia transforms the female entity into an object whose sole purpose is to pleasure. An area of this exhibit include an arcade machine of the game "Mortal Kombat" to depict the difference in the way males and females are drawn and portrayed in video games. Male characters within this game are provided armor, or clothing at the least, that covers their vital organs and suits their fighting style. It is obvious the intention of the male characters' clothing is functionality. However, the same can not be said about their female counterparts. Not only is their clothing minimal, their fighting style is also hypersexualized. This video game is almost the epitome of Mulvey's fetishistic scopophilia. Next to this will be side–by–side showcasing of famous superhero costumes such as Wonder Woman vs. Superman and Catwoman vs. the Joker. Again, these costumes reinforce fetishistic scopophilia as female characters are purposely clothed with minimal armor that accentuates a female's breasts and butt. Music videos are another reliable source for elaborating on fetishistic scopophilia. For instance, the popular rock band Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" reduces the band's teacher to nothing but a sexual object to whom they sexually fantasize about instead of respect and learn from. Moreover, the famous "Stacy's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne reduces the band's friend's mom to a sexual object for visual pleasure. The novel "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov will be used to further detail how males view women, even young teens, as subjects for their pleasure, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The heroin epidemic is sweeping across the Midwest, and claiming the lives of young white males. It is very different from the 1960's use of heroin, and is now typically used because of its low cost and previous opioid addictions to other prescription drugs. Young white males in many different communities are becoming hooked because of the careless use of pain pills prescribed or taking them from parents' medicine cabinets. The communities include rural towns, big cities, and suburbs all across the country. "The rate of past–year heroin use among non–Hispanic whites increased 114.3% from 1.4 per 1,000 in 2002–2004 to 3.0 per 1,000 in 2011–2013" (CDC, 2015). The most blatant and detrimental of the Articles' flaws was that they did not grant the Congress the ability to levy taxes. The only way for Congress to raise money was to ask the individual states for donations, and this left Congress extremely low on funds. During the years of the Revolutionary War the United States Congress incurred a very large war debt. The Congress owed $12 million to foreign countries, $27 million to the American people plus $12.5 million in interest. The individual states owed $21 million. The Congress was over $50 million in debt. Without the ability to levy taxes, the Congress was left with virtually no possible way of repaying their huge war debts. The American people began to get angry and uneasy with the unpaid debts. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is a single man, but his sexual orientation, romantic and sexual relationships are not mentioned in the report. Considering his particular cultural elements, he is in advantageous situation in some part such as, ethnicity, sex, religion and age. Thus, he is not likely to feel "extra" oppression due to his metal health and alcohol use problems. However, his comes from low SES and has a mental disability (therefore, he become eligible to Medicare), these probably negatively influence his mental health progression. For example, he is not able to access his former psychiatrist due to his current insurance. When it comes to his spirituality, even though his father is a religious man, the client does not seem to be interested in spiritual issues. However, his father's strong spirituality would be beneficial for both. Since, the client's father, as a main social support source, his mental and physical health is also vital for Tom. In fact, his father plays a critical role in Tom's life. Conceptualization The client has two equally important mental health problems, which are schizophrenia and alcohol use disorder. • 32. Colonialism and Imperialism The European, White Male vs. the Other in Heart of Darkness The novella Heart of Darkness has, since it's publication in 1899, caused much controversy and invited much criticism. While some have hailed it's author, Joseph Conrad as producing a work ahead of it's time in it's treatment and criticism of colonialist practices in the Congo, others, most notably Chinua Achebe, have criticized it for it's racist and sexist construction of cultural identity. Heart of Darkness can therefore be described as a text of it's time, as the cultural identity of the dominant society, that is, the European male is constructed in opposition to "the other", "the other" in Heart of Darkness being defined as black and/or female. Notions of cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the case of the second instance it is somewhat appropriate that the "leader's" death is announced by one of the people of the group he is seen to have joined. Therefore Africans are constructed as being inferior to Europeans through Conrad's refusal to grant them the power of language and speech and even when they are given the opportunity to speak, Conrad constructs Africans as being largely inarticulate. Thus confirming the superiority of the white race. Conrad further marginalises and degrades the African characters and race not only through the denial of language but also the denial of human form. When Marlow first sees Africans in a small boat on the water, he describes them in terms of their "muscles", "bones" and "white teeth", despite also recognizing a vitality and spirit. The disembodiment continues when Marlow encounters the chain gang at the outer station. It is when seeking "shade" however that Marlow stumbles upon the grove of death. Here he finds emancipated and dying Africans, cast off by their imperialist "owners" because they are no longer deemed to have monetary value, or economic viability. Instead of feeling revulsion's at this, Marlow dehumanizes the Africans, describing them as "bundles of acute angles" and noting how they drink on "all fours". Thus by denying the Africans their humanity, Conrad constructs a notion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The House Of Burgesses: White Male Dominance In The United... In American history, "white men" are inherently dominate. In all affairs including family, ideology, culture, politics, and more, white men are superior. This is due to the creation of the United States, and the roots of its people: Europeans. The United States was built by Europeans, who are inherently white. Even the most substantial figures of history were once British. George Washington for example, was not always American, he was a British soldier before he became an American president. In general, Americans did not just appear; it was a progression of generations and war that created the term we now use to identify people of the United States, Americans. Furthermore, politics played an eminent role in the development of a white supremacy attitude that is seen throughout the greater part of American history. Politics enabled "white men" to dominate history. The House of Burgesses is a prime example of the establishment of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The House of Burgesses was the first legislative assembly of the American Colonies, and it set the tone for American politics for years to come. The House of Burgesses consisted of 22 burgesses that represented 11 settlements/plantations. The burgesses were all wealthy, white, landowners. It is no coincidence that for hundreds of years to follow, political representatives fit these characteristics exactly. This early establishment of white men in politics created a norm of white male dominance and power, and it lead to "white men" being able to dominate women, Native Americans, and African Americans throughout history. With all the power to determine legislature and other legal action, white men were able to set themselves up to hold a dominant role. Andrew Jackson is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Egalitarian Slave Families Analysis Mariela Velasco Jill Fields History 101 05 October 2017 "Egalitarian Slave Families" Neither patriarchal nor matriarchal marriages existed in slave families since all slaves, male and female, held almost no power over themselves let alone the other gender. It was the plantation owner who virtually had all the power to control every aspect of his or her slave, regardless of gender. Since childhood, both female and male, slaves encountered injustices and misfortunes that showed no favoritism for one particular gender over the other– both males and females were brought up together essentially the same way; preparing and waiting for the life of hardship and strenuous work that awaited for them (White 91– 118). In her book Ar'n't I a Women Deborah Gray White illustrates extensive amount of slave narratives demonstrating the huge amount of control white owners had over their slaves as well as the slave norms by which slaves were brought up and married; and therefore proving that she is indeed right when she states that "slave families were unusually egalitarian." Slave families can be considered egalitarian because one partner virtually had no "dominance" over the other one as it was the white owner who "controlled" and "dominated" almost every aspect of the slave's lives. For example, slave marriages were not like the "traditional" white marriages since these did not offer the benefits traditional white marriages brought such as economic assistance and male protection ... • 35. Drosophila Melanogaster Lab Report Essay Introduction In most kitchens the small flies that are found are Drosophila Melanogaster also called fruit fly. They are often brought in by ripened tomatoes, grapes and other perishable items from the garden. Drosophila melanogaster is a little two winged insect about 3mm long two winged insect that belongs to the Diptera, the order of the flies. The drosophila egg is about half a millimeter long. Fertilization takes about one day the embryo to develop and hatch into a worm–like larva. The larva eats and grows continuously, after two days as a third in star larva; it moults one more time to form an immobile pupa. Over the next four days, the body is completely remodeled to give the adult winged form, which then hatches from the pupal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some larva containing vials had hatched into flies. Counting of the flies began at this point. As flies started to grow, at different rates for each vial, with in the first seven days after all larva had hatched the flies were counted. The procedure was done according to theDrosophila manual (45–2620) Results F1 Predictions For our first generation (F1) of flies we chose to cross apterous (+) females and white–eye (w) males. We predicted that the mutation would be sex linked recessive. So if the female was the sex with the mutation then all females would be wild type heterozygous. Heterozygous is a term used when the two genes for a trait are opposite. The males would all be white eye since they only have one X chromosome. If the males were the sex that had the mutation then all the flies would be wild type but the females would be heterozygous. F1 Outcomes From the cross white eye males with wild females, our results were we got both phenotypes in the males as well as the females to be wild type. F2 Predictions Based upon observation of the F1 generation, we hypothesize that the inheritance of the white–eye (W) mutation is sex–linked and recessive wild type. For the F2 generation the phenotype that was obtained is as followed. See Figure1. |Normal wings |Normal wings |No wings white |No wings | |Red eyes |White

Both Ernest Hemingway's Hills Like White Elephants and John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums portray oppressed female characters in the early 1900s. In Hemingway's short, Jig is oppressed by her lover known only as "The American," whereas, the main character in The Chrysanthemums, Elisa Allen, feels the weight of oppression from society (male dominated) as a whole. Although the driving force of the two women's subjugation varies slightly, their emotional responses to such are what differentiate the two. Throughout Hills Like White Elephants, the American refers to his girlfriend only as Jig (which is a device used for measuring whiskey). Although she does seem to struggle with the decision, it isn't long until she relinquishes her objection, giving him authority over her morality and judgment. In The Chrysanthemum, Elisa Allen's character is clearly the result of oppression in a male dominated community. Early on, Steinbeck makes it a point to establish her femininity (or lack there of) as the result of her marriage to, and life with, a common rancher and farmer: "Her figure looked blocked and heavy in her gardening costume, a man's black hat pulled down over her eyes, clodhopper shoes, a figured print dress almost completely covered by a big corduroy apron with four big pockets to hold the snips, the trowel and scratcher, the seeds and the knife she worked with" (pg 1611). Elisa has obviously taken on a more masculine façade due to her years spent on the farm. However, it seems apparent, both early on and later in the story that she has tried to maintain what femininity she has. She does not help with the ranch or the cultivation of the orchard, but rather tends to her own garden. Her reportedly stellar chrysanthemums represent her delicate side. By maintaining and ensuring a yearly exemplary flourish, Elisa sustains and nourishes her suppressed womanly essence. Although Steinbeck reveals that, "The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. White Privilege And Male Privilege To begin with, reverse–sexism, or sexism against cisgender men, simply does not exist. Women, non–binary people, trans–persons, and even other men cannot be sexist against men. Sexism is a form of oppression and cisgender men are not oppressed the way that women, persons who identify as non–binary, or those who are transsexual are. That is not to say that there is no prejudice or discrimination that exists toward men, because there definitely is, but it is not sexism. Sexism is part prejudice, but it is also one part power and that power is always in a man's favor. They have always had the upper–hand against women, even in the "progressive" society that exists today. Male privilege has existed for centuries, but it was not widely discussed until around 1988 when Peggy McIntosh, a scholar working for Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, wrote a paper titled, "White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to See Correspondences Through Work in Women's Studies,". The paper takes a look both at white and male privilege, with a long list of 46 examples of McIntosh's own, self–recognized privilege as a white woman. The paper sparked a massive controversy and extremely opposing opinions on privilege. David Horowitz, an American writer with deep conservative views and values, deemed McIntosh one of "America's ten wackiest feminists". Despite the mostly right wing criticism of the paper, it provoked more open minded people to take a look within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Peggy McIntosh's White Privilege And Male Privilege Essay Privileges are things that a person receives that gives them an advantage over most people (Merriam–Webster). These are benefits that only certain people receive for being in a certain group or discourse. Peggy McIntosh, director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, wrote "White Privilege and Male Privilege" and states "I think whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privileges, as males are taught not to recognize male privilege" (605). She argues that whites and males receive certain privileges, yet they do not even notice them. This shows that different races and women are still put at a disadvantage, but the people who receive the benefits are blind to the problem. Many people will argue that she is correct... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also shelter it by keeping it a secret from their own so they never see it as an advantage. Shannon Sullivan wrote the book "Revealing Whiteness: The Unconscious Habits of Racial Privilege". She does agree with McIntosh that whites do in fact receive these hidden privileges. In her book she wrote "Blithely wrapped up in a white world, white people often do not see their own ignorance and cannot be faulted for not addressing it..." (18). Sullivan explains that white people do not realize that they are receiving these certain benefits for just being white. They also can't fix this problem until they realize that they are privileged. The privileges that they receive are mainly social benefits, which probably why they are hard to see. McIntosh give an example by saying, "I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed" (607). This is one of the many over looked privileges that people don't seem to notice. In the book "White Teachers/Diverse Classrooms", written by Landsman, Julie, and Lewis, they also support this idea by giving an example of this certain privilege not applying to a person of color, even to the president of Brown University, Ruth Simmons. Simmons was "followed and question as she walk the aisles" of a major department store (11). Despite the fact that she was president of Brown University, she was stilled harassed at clothing store ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Drosophila Melanogaster Drosophila melanogaster – Sex linkage and inheritance of genes through cross breeding Abstract This experiment looks at the relationship between genes, generations of a population and if genes are carried from one generation to another. By studying Drosophila melanogaster, starting with a parent group we crossed a variety of flies and observe the characteristics of the F1 generation. We then concluded that sex–linked genes and autosomal genes could indeed be traced through from the parent generation to the F1 generation. Introduction Sex linkage and inherited genes allow us to predict and understand how and why certain animals and plants inherit features from their parents while some don't. Sex linkage is the condition in which a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Care was taken to not let the immobilised Drosophila drown in the white media until they were flying again. The vial was then labeled accordingly with the type of cross (Male Vg, Female W) and the date. The date is important as the Drosophila complete a life cycle within approximately 2 weeks from the mating day. This vial became known as the parent generation or (P). The vial was then kept in a moderate temperature out of the sun and by the end of the first week the parent generation had laid eggs, hatched and the next generation were between the larva stage and the pupa stage. At this point, the parent generations was no longer required and were decanted out into ethyl alcohol, killed and disposed of. They did not need to be scored (inspected) as we already knew what they were. We then kept the vial with the juvenile Drosophila for another 2 weeks in the same conditions as above and found that the F1 generation had hatched and laid eggs of their own. We then decanted the F1 generation into alcohol to kill them and kept them aside to score. The vial containing the new generation F2 of Drosophila was then kept for use in a further experiment. The F1 generation that we had just decanted was then moved to a dissecting microscope for scoring, this generation included 20 Drosophila flies that we could then inspect for different traits using the microscope (traits being the sex of ... • 41. Literature And Everyday Life : Toni Morrison 's The Dark,... From the role it plays in literature to its looming existence in our everyday lives, race has an undeniable influence on many aspects of our lives. Toni Morrison and Peggy McIntosh, a writer and an activist respectively, both have the urge to understand this presence and impact of race in literature and everyday life specifically. Through self–reflection and attempts to see from others' perspectives, both Morrison and McIntosh manage to answer their own questions regarding race and its role in literature and everyday life while articulating their discoveries and intentions in similar and comparable ways. Both of their pieces, "Playing in the Dark," and "White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to see Correspondences through Work in Women's Studies," help Morrison and McIntosh, as well as readers, to understand the polar yet interdependent nature of African American and white status in America. Toni Morrison specifically delves deep into the role "Africanism" plays in American literature in her piece, "Playing in the Dark," while in "White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to see Correspondences through Work in Women's Studies," Peggy McIntosh strives to understand her privilege as a white female by pointing out its similarities to male privilege. What these two writers have in common is their use of self–realization and reflection as tools to understanding not only the mindset and circumstances of those outside themselves ...
