The outfit that ran a high profile campaign for Narendra Modi during 2014
general elections has been issued summons by tax authorities.
Political consultant Prashant Kishor led the Association of Citizens for
Accountable Governance (popularly known as CAG) during the 2013-14
general elections campaign. CAG was formed in 2013. Kishor, leading a new
outfit called IPAC (Indian Political Action Committee), subsequently worked
with Nitish Kumar in Bihar elections and is currently working with Congress
for UP and Punjab elections.
Tax authorities have asked CAG to declare details of its income and sources
of income for the last four years. Sum mons have been issued by the
Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence in Nashik. ET has reviewed
revenue authorities' summons. When contacted, Sushil Kumar Kale, deputy
director of the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence, said he
didn't wish to comment on the case. Kishor didn't respond to ET's queries.

Summons were issued by MD Pekhale, superintendent, Central Excise
Intelligence, on April 26 and sent to the company's address in Ahmedabad,
asking its officials to appear before the central excise authorities on May 4.
The case is still going on, revenue officials said. These officials did not want
to be identified.
Authorities communicated that an enquiry on service tax obligations of CAG
is being conducted under Finance Act 1994 and that Vora is summoned in
person to present evidence along with documents and details. According to
the notice, Vora has been asked to produce annual reports, bills, invoices,
expenditure ledgers, bank statement with payment receipts among others.
ET has learnt that the Central Excise Intelligence Directorate has also asked
the company to show its income ledgers, so that details of annual incomes
can be reviewed.Failure to comply will attract section 174 and section 175 of
the Indian penal code, the notice says.

According to ministry of corporate affairs data, the Association of Citizens for Accountable
Governance is a company registered in India, with registered office in Mumbai.
The company was registered on July 12, 2013 with Registrar of Companies, Mumbai as a
private company limited by shares, and lists Himanshu Anirudhsinh Chudasama and Nirav
Ramesh chandra Vora as directors.
The current status of the company is active, ministry data says, classifying the company as
limited by shares with an authorised share capital `. 100,000 and paid capital of . 1,000.`
The company's annual General meeting was last held on September 30, 2014 and its
balance sheet was last filed on March 31, 2014.
Company reports of CAG or I-PAC don't show Kishor as chairman or director. Company
directors are those closely associated with Kishor in his political work.
Kishor, 37, is an ex-UN mission chief in Africa and was widely credited with putting
together a team of young professionals and then turning them into an effective campaign
instrument in 2014. He is credited with playing a significant role in the 2015 Bihar election,
too. Congress employed Kishor following the success of these campaigns.
