3. My media product is based on the hip-hop magazine XXL which mainly complies with the dominant representation of young black males. But the dominant representation is so negative that I have decided to include some artists from the same sort of background who went through the same things as the target reader and succeeded so that my target audience can see that they don’t have to live a life of guns, drugs and prison. The stereotype that young black males are a nuisance to society is a negative stereotype and unfounded as everybody is different and just because a small minority cause trouble that regularly gets media attention, people can be forgiven for thinking that all young black males are like that. Films like kidulthood and adulthood show this negative stereotype and comply with the dominant representation but also try to show what happens when young men do take the wrong path and attempts to show how to deal with the real life situations that my target reader could be going through.
