1. How Does My Opening Scene
Represent Particular Social
Groups?
Representation: Is the way in which the media "re-
presents" the world around us in the form of signs and
codes for audiences to read.
2. My Social Group
• My opening scene represents the social group of
teenagers and young adults who like films such as ‘La
Haine’, ‘Kidulthood’ and ‘My Brother The Devil’. My
teen film opening was designed for ages 15-21 and
those who watch contemporary modern urban drama.
• To replicate this feel I have represented teenagers
through typical stereotyped characters.
• I also used binary opposites to establish the characters
role and personality within the opening.
3. STEREOTYPES
Stereotype: are representations of people that rely on
preconceived ideas about the group that person is
perceived as belonging to. It is assumed that an
individual shares personal characteristics with other
members of that group.
4. The Dangerous One
• His the one who controls the gang
where there going and what happens
when.
• The one everyone is scared of and know
not to mess around with him.
• Always the one to get killed at the end.
• Negative outlook on life
• Nothings ever good enough for him.
5. The Sensible One
• The one who doesn’t want to get involved.
• The more mature one.
• He knows right from wrong.
• Convinces his friends it’s a bad idea.
• Usually dies innocent.
6. ‘The Other’ One
• The youngest out of the group.
• Always wants to please the ring leader.
• Doesn’t know the consequences.
• Considered as the weakest within the group.
• Only needed when something needs doing.
• Constantly trying to prove themselves.
• Secretly scared.
7. BINARY OPPOSITIONS
Levi Strauss Theory: There is a constant creation of
conflict/opposition propels narrative. Narrative can
only end on a resolution of conflict. He believed binary
opposites are the central climax to a narrative structure.
For example, Peace Vs. War.
8. GOOD Vs. EVIL
The costume allows the
audience to see his doesn’t
belong with the gang as he is
dressed smart which shows his
the sensible one
The use of the glasses as a
prop shows again the
difference between him the
other boy. The glasses
symbolise him being a nerd
and quite an intelligent boy
compared the other boy.
The boys facial express is
happy while his playing his
game. His joyful which
doesn’t correspond with the
bad attitude facial expression.
Compared to the boy
on the left this
character’s clothing is
quite dark symbolising
the atmosphere
surrounding the
storyline and
personality.
His facial expression
also gives away his
outlook on life which
seems quite dull and
negative. Even when
playing Xbox.
