Abstraction generally makes references to objects in real life while non-representational art does not.

NON-REPRESENTATIONAL ART
ABSTRACTION distorts the view, or greatly simplifies and reduces the
structure of a known thing, person, or place, often into its most
elemental geometric components.
NONREPRESENTATIONAL ART does not begin with a "thing" or a subject
in the real world – it can be ”about” line, color, mood, form, shape. The
meaning is subjective and allows the viewer to give it a personal
interpretation.
