How do you imagine social
interaction within 10 years,
taking into consideration the
impact of technology on
human relations?
PABLO RIVILLA CONDE
WHAT MEANS … ?
 SOCIAL
INTERACTION
 INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY
SOCIAL INTERACTION
 Social interactions refer to particular forms of
externalities, in which the actions of a reference
group affect an individual’s preferences. The
reference group depends on the context and is
typically an individual’s family, neighbors,
friends or peers.
(JA. Scheinkman – Princeton University)
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY
 Communication is the transfer of information and some
means of ensuring that what is sent is also received.
Technology increases the ways in which information can be
communicated, the speed of transmission, and the total
volume that can be handled at any one time.
 Information and communications technology (ICT) refers to
all the technology used to handle telecommunications,
broadcast media, intelligent building management systems,
audiovisual processing and transmission systems, and
network-based control and monitoring functions.
EVOLUTION OF SOCIAL
INTERACTION
INFOGRAPHIC – HISTORY OF
COMMUNICATIONS
A BRIEF HISTORY
 The history of Communication dates back to the earliest signs of life. It all started
with our ancestors making grimace and signs, a smile or a sound of an animal to
express their feelings or states of mind.
 The revolution of human communication started with speech more than 200,000
years ago, symbols, hieroglyph and writing.
 The first transmission to signals over a distance began thousands a years ago with
the use of smoke signals and drums.
A BRIEF HISTORY
 From smoke signals to the 1st organised messaging service, the carrier pigeons and
then the marathon man in the Ancient Greece.
 China invents the paper in the 2nd century with it later on comes the papyrus, the
movable type and the printing press.
 In the 1790s the first system semaphore telegraph line emerged in Europe however
it was not until the 1830s that electrical telecommunication systems started to
appear (telegraph, Morse code and electric telegraph).
A BRIEF HISTORY
 In 1876 the telephone arrived and it was the first sign of modern communication.
It also was the first and the best way someone could receive instant gratification
by communicating immediately with another person.
 As technology advanced more and more inventions were being created
throughout the world with one goal in mind – To create the fastest way to
communicate with someone. We have now the Radio, TV, WWW, etc.
 Communication has progressed really quickly in one century. So, the question
now is: What’s next?
WHAT’S NEXT?
WHAT’S NEXT? INTRODUCTION
 The technology we already use is being improved and new ones will be developed and with
them our social interaction will increase and develop.
 I believe we will have high quality internet access in many more places (outdoor) and people
will be more connected via online. As a result of that, everyone will meet a lot of new people
online and more information will be shared on the internet. Also, high technology business
will see their revenues increase, due to the access to a new base of customers through larger
marketing campaigns launched on the social media.
WHAT’S NEXT? EXAMPLES
Here we have new examples of how the social interaction is going to be in the future:
 New apps that allow to drop the language barrier instantly through data bases in several languages
(itranslate, word lens).
 Developing telepathy communication, mind reading with brain computer interface (Facebook)
 The 5G standard is released (between 10 and 100 times faster than 4G).
 HoloLens that lets you communicate with other people using realistic holograms in real time as if they're
right there with you in the same room and record messages for others.
 Holographic TV is going mainstream (Sony, Philips)
 A watch able to do videoconferences or capture images. (iwatch)
 The future technology will be try to influence peoples feelings and experiences.
WHAT’S NEXT? EXAMPLES
 Development on Home Automation: Smart house with a robot hologram that
makes easier to check for example, room temperature, how to fix a broken
electronic machine, etc. and enables monitoring all rooms at home or to be able
to interact with somebody when you are away , at anytime and anywhere.
WHAT’S NEXT? EXAMPLES
 Holograms to be used in meetings controlled by employees working from home
with the function of a smart personal assistant hologram or even to be used on
public places for instructions or advertisement. (London-Holborn tube station)
 Holograms to show forecasts, data, etc. at company meetings.
WHAT’S NEXT? EXAMPLES
 Human interaction will decrease with the future Amazon Delivery Drones that are
going to fly around the city and also with the future system of paying in the
supermarkets through an app, with no need of coins or notes.
WHAT’S NEXT? EXAMPLES
Are we really interacting?
DISADVANTAGES
 Internet is making communication much easier with those who are far away, but making it difficult with
those who are physically closer to us. For that reason, people could feel more lonely than ever if they tend
to interact online rather than physically in normal life, such as, at the workplace or with friends. It could
damage the social skills of the people.
 The use of social media and playing games electronically connected make people more sedentary and
resulting in a lack of social and interpersonal skills.
 Social networks may have a negative impact to those who compare themselves to others constantly and
those using social media to generate bullying and violence.
 If people spend more time at home using electronic devices instead of exploring the world, they could not
experience creativity and inspiration. They will not be able to feel unforgettable experiences that are real
and last longer on their memory.
 People spending to much time at home connected to social media, will be spending less time active or
exercising, being more lazy and in the end they could suffer obesity problems.
ADVANTAGES
 Facilitates interaction with people all over the world and someone will be able to find
a long-lost friend through a social networking site
 Makes easier to learn about cultures different than ours and creates a global mindset
of other.
 Online education is increasing variety programs and courses at lower cost.
 Working from home will continue growing and employees will go to the office only for
important meetings saving time commuting and making life easier.
 Due to Social Media, companies will be able to retail online getting additional sources
of revenue.
 News and information is distributed quicker and cheaper.
 Reducing the use of paper decrease the damage to the environment.
CONCLUSION
 The impact of technology on social interaction has been incredibly important in
all aspects with advantages and disadvantages as we have mentioned, so the best
approach will be to make yourself available through technology only when
appropriate, so that it supplements our relationships rather than substituting
them.
