2. Synthetic Artists
Synthetic artists are artists who are made famous and sell copies
of their albums an singles due to their image and marketing
campaigns. Synthetic artists often have a wide target
audience due to the fact that they try to maximize their
revenue through sales. These artists often try to attract a
younger target market such as teenagers and will dress and
present themselves accordingly. Synthetic artists often sell
singles rather than albums as they want these songs to be ‘big
hits’ and attract an audience making their songs recognizable
and played globally.
3. Organic Artists
Organic artists are normally sold and marketed on their talent
and will often try to pursue the image or being ordinary
people rather that stars. This attracts a certain audience as
they come across as more approachable and nicer people.
They often target a smaller market like older people who are
mature enough to respect and enjoy good music that requires
a certain degree of talent. Having said this, some would argue
that organic artists have developed an image through their
album covers and lyrics, an example of this is how they often
are holding a guitar in their pictures, this is show that singing
is not their only attribute.
4. Examples of Synthetic
• Lady Gaga
• One Direction
• 50 Cent
• Pitball
• Justin Bieber
• JLS
• Dr Dre
5. Examples of Organic
• Ed Sheeran
• Bon Iver
• Ocean Colour Scene
• Amy Macdonald
• Feist
• Jack Johnson
6. The Beatles
The Beatles are a controversial one to judge as they potentially
have aspects of both. John Lennon would be scene as the
more synthetic due to his image of being the ‘bad man’ or the
group with sex, drugs and alcohol. It is also commonly viewed
that he is slightly less talented than the likes of Paul
McCartney. McCartney is often viewed as a more organic
artist as he grew up being the more innocent and musically
driven Beatle. He often adhered to the stereotype of being
seen with a guitar in his hand, and he was also the writer of a
large amount of their songs.
7. Entrepreneurship in Synthetic Artists
This is when Synthetic artists decide to launch a product to sell
along with their music to help promote themselves as a
name. This is a form of synergy. An example of this is Victoria
Beckham releasing a perfume, this is not only to earn as much
as she could, but also to keep generating sales through her
music career in the spice girls. Other examples would include
Dr. Dre releasing the ‘Beats’ headphones, and 50 cent
releasing a rival product in his ‘SMS’ headphones, making
them slightly more up market to give the image that he is a
classy performer.
8. The Transformation
Often artists can start off as organic but change to synthetic
when they start earning money and getting famous. Many
people would argue that Justin Bieber is an example of this
because there is a story that he got spotted by a record label
through the videos he made on Youtube through his talent.
But now has a strong image in his appearance and lyric
selection. This transformation has happened because of his
success and he saw an opportunity to start making a lot of
money through targeting a larger audience. This was clearly
successful.
