The prison industrial complex (PIC) describes the intertwined interests of government and industry that utilize surveillance and imprisonment as solutions to societal issues. It disproportionately affects marginalized communities, particularly people of color and the economically disadvantaged, and perpetuates systems of control rather than rehabilitation. With over 7 million people in the U.S. impacted by incarceration, the PIC poses significant social and economic costs, and highlights the urgent need for reform.
