2. What is Public Relations(PR)?
• According to British Institute of Public Relations(BIPR), Public
Relations means “A deliberate, planned and sustained effort to
establish and maintain mutual understanding between an
organization and its ‘public’.”
• According to International Public Relations Association- “Public
relations is a decision-making management practice tasked with
building relationships and interests between organisations and their
publics based on the delivery of information through trusted and
ethical communication methods.”

5. • Newspapers- through newspapers and
publications many information are able to
reach external publics of the organisation.
• Radio- Special announcements in radio
channels both public and private work as the
medium of communication for PR especially in
rural areas.

7. Films/ Movies- Films are very powerful medium of PR,

8. Traditional Media
The traditional media have played a very
important role in addressing many social issues. In
developing countries where illiteracy is
widespread and communication is scanty, the folk
media assumes greater importance.

10. • House Journals- are one of the most effective tools that organisations
can use to communicate with their employees. It is a periodical
publication which tries to establish regular communication between
an organisation and its employees and other public.
• Bulletin boards- organisations regularly publish many important
notices, orders, circulars for the employees of organizations on a
display board known as bulletin boards.
• Annual reports- it is the most important and essential document of
any organisation which helps to communicate the financial status of
the company to its stakeholders.
• Printed literature- Some organisations publish printed literature for
the regarding use of product which usually consists of pictorial demo
and instructions.

12. • Press conferences- are traditional method of giving out information
by use of direct or ‘face to face’ communication technique.
• Press Releases- the usual way of issuing information to the press is by
writing a press release. Press releases are a traditional method of
handing our information and is popular tool among PR professionals.
• Press Tour- several times organizations invite journalists to visit their
production houses/manufacturing branches of the organization,
which enables them to provide first hand experiences to the media
professionals.
• Exhibitions- are an important medium to promote organisation’s
products and services, it also offers an excellent opportunity to
connect with prospective consumers, dealers and media
professionals.

13. Community Relations
• A community is a group of people, who live in the same place, share the
same government and have a common cultural and historical heritage . The
people who live in a community and the institutions that serve them are
mutually dependent. The people cannot enjoy a good life without the
institutions, that is called community relations.
The objectives of community relations of a company are:
• To inform company about company's policies operations and problems.
• To answer criticism and repel attracts by local pressure group.
• To promote the welfare of a community.
• To inform employees connected with the company.

14. Government Relations
• The function of PR in government is essentially non- political. PR in
government department has two main tasks-
• To give regular information on policy plan and activities and
achievements of the departments.
• To inform and educate the public on legislation, regulations and all
matters that effect the daily life of citizens

15. • Using photograph as PR tool- photographs and illustrations are and
important aid to public relations. The first point to appreciate is that
photographs reduce boredom. It has definitely edge over the printed
matter. It has newsworthiness even for the illiterates.
• Working with influential groups- an influential group may consist simply of
the leaders of a community or it may be any one or combination of
organization. Every service club, women's group, political party, labour
union, civic organisation, welfare body, veterans org. schools are a medium
of communication are the influential groups.
• Using advertising for PR communication- advertising is also very effective
medium of communication. Traditionally, organisations have used
advertising to sell products but lately, firms use advertisements for
purposes other than product promotion. Public relations advertising
focused on the general image of the company wished to convey and the
public issues it wished to confront.
