WALK
Walk is a most common act performed by the human beings but to define it in some proper
words is a difficult task. Oxford dictionary defines this whole process as:
Move at a regular pace by lifting and setting down each foot in
turn, never having both feet off the ground at once.
The way we walk is of great importance in our life, it casts the whole scenario of our
personality. The way we walk speaks everything about us. According to experts, our body
language reflects our moods, expressions and emotions, rather we can say our whole
personality is represented by the way we speak, the way we walk, and the way we dress up.
Similarly, our walk shows the message that what we feel or what type of personality do we
have. Our walk presents us to the modern world but according to a study, 80% of the people
don’t bother to see that how they are presenting themselves in the world. They don’t care to
control their body movements while walking, they don’t see the speed while they walk or their
shoulder positions or their hand movements etc.

BODY LANGUAGE
Body language refers to various forms of nonverbal communication, wherein a person may
reveal clues as to some unspoken intention or feeling through their physical behavior. These
behaviors can include posture, gestures, facial expressions, and eye movements. Body language
may provide clues as to the attitude or state of mind of a person. For example, it may indicate
aggression, attentiveness, boredom, a relaxed state, pleasure, amusement, and intoxication.

WALKING SPEED
Walking speed refers with the pace by which we walk. The speed is a crucial element during
our walk. Our pace during walk shows our state of mind. It is a thumb rule that
The slower the walk, the more internal the dialogue.
Fast walkers are normally considered as the confident personalities. While slow walkers are
supposed to be the introverts and defensive people.
ARMS AND HANDS
Movement of arms and hands is also an important element in our walk. Cross arms while
walking show that the person feels vulnerable while uncrossed or free movement of hands
during walks shows confidence.
EYES
If eyes are straight ahead, it shows that the person has confidence in himself. These people
want to achieve something in their life. If a person walks with his eyes on the ground, this
indicates that the person lacks the confidence in himself and these people are not interested in
their future.
WALKING STYLES
There are different walking styles, commonly used by the people round the globe. These are
discussed below:
1. THE FUGITIVES
These are the people who walk slowly and constantly moving their head and scanning their
environment very closely during walk. These people are like a sneak thief ready to cut your
purse and get away with it. These people are introverts and are genuinely afraid of crowds
and would like nothing better than to hole up in some dark corner of the world

These people are always in a rush and try to reach their destination as early as they can.
These people are like an athlete running in a marathon. These people are like the bees and
are an asset to any organization. They value time however, unable to reach any conclusions.
3. THE SWAGGERS
These people walk with a slight hunch and looks like they are swaggering. These people
are extrovert. They are confident and want to achieve something in their life. They have
clearly defined goals and keep themselves motivated in achieving those goals.
4. THE SLEEP WALKERS
These people remain in their thoughts. They walk in a trance and seem to reach their
destination somehow without colliding with people or electric poles. They don’t bother that
someone calling them in crowd. These people are always thinking something and are
supposed to be the creative minds.
5. THE DRAGGERS
Their walking style is irritating. They drag their feet as they walk, creating an awful
scratching sound that jars through the eardrums of the audience. These people are lazy.
These people don’t have a care in the world and the next best thing they can do is go back
home and sleep.
6. THE HAPPY FEET
These are high-strung people, who take long strides, and swing their arms enthusiastically
as they walk. They are energetic and their walk demonstrates their confidence. And seem
to be strong people having everything under control.
7. RAMP WALK
They walk like a model walk on the ramp. Their one foot moving in front of the other,
along with the seductive swinging of the hips.
8. THE ACHIEVERS
They have a burning desire to stand out in a crowd. They want to seek attention and have a
desire make themselves dominated everywhere.
9. SLOW COACH
Those who walk so slow that they irritate the people who walk at a normal pace. They
always keep their head down, walk at a slow pace and take small steps.
6. 10.THE DEFENSIVE
These people are cautious and are less likely to be risk-takers. They are calm minded, love
to relax and are always complacent. Such people are believed to be less.
Along with these walking styles there are some other gestures that also send a message to the
audience.
I. FOLDED ARMS
Walking with folded arms may actually be a sign of anxiety, fear, or insecurity.
II. HANDS IN POCKET
Walking with hands in the pockets means that the person is not completely open to the
environment, and may not be willing to communicate.
III. PARTIAL CROSS ARMS
Such person swings one of the arms across the body to hold or touch the other arm to
form a barrier. It also shows lack of interest, detachment, or insecurity of that person.
IV. HEAVY FOOTSTEPS
Putting a lot of pressure on the ground while walking could indicate an individual who
is persistent and committed to his work. These individuals set their own ways. Such
people are perceived as rigid and inflexible by the others.
V. HAND GRIPPING
Several prominent males are noted for their habit of walking with one palm gripping
the other hand behind the back. It shows confidence and superiority over others. This
habit is common in the people having a position of authority.
TIPS TO IMPROVE WALKING STYLE
These were the few types that reflect the different styles of walk by the people. The ideal way
to be identified is quite difficult but to improve our walk and to impress the audience is not that
much difficult. The only need is to follow some tips and you can send a positive message about
your personality. A study indicates a few tips to improve our walking style and to boost our
personality.
Wear comfortable shoes
