1. What is an Annotated Bibliography?
“An annotated bibliography is a list of citations. Each
citation is followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative
paragraph. That paragraph is the annotation.”
It is approx. 150 words
2. What does it do?
It provides information to the reader about the
source.
When writing it, think about what information about
the source would be helpful to YOU.
3. What does it include? Three Parts: the
citation; a description; an evaluation
First Part. The Actual Citation: (MLA Format)
4. What does it include? A Description.
Second Part. This is a brief summary of the contents.
Ex.: “This article details the events surrounding the Montgomery Bus
Boycott, beginning with Rosa Parks. It covers the personal sacrifices the
workers had to make by not riding the buses. The boycott lasted 384
days, which means workers had to find alternate ways to work for every
one of those days. Because of the segregated living areas of
Montgomery, workers often lived many miles away from where they
worked. That often meant long walks to and from work in all kinds of
weather. It also discusses the economic impacts of the boycott on local
businesses and the bus company itself, as well as the role of Martin
Luther King, Jr.”
5. What does it include? An Evaluation.
Third Part. This is YOUR brief evaluation of the source; what
was helpful about it to YOU.
Ex: “This article was particularly useful because it described
in detail the impact the boycott had on the personal lives of
the workers who refused to ride the buses. It told the
personal stories of many, as well as the ways they came
together to help one another through various car pools and
other means.“
