Monthly circulation, as not
much music comes out on a
weekly basis so it needs to
be monthly to have enough
good articlesMake more sales
over a month than a
week
Well known
artists, as star
appeal will attract
people to buy the
magazine
Younger audience, 15-45.
As the majority of people
who listen to rap are of a
younger audience
I think the social status of the
target audience would be C1,
C2 and D as the higher social
status stereotypically wouldnât
listen to rap/hip-hop so
therefore wouldnât be
interested in the magazine.
Close or medium
shots from
different angles
Bold colours used
so magazine
stands out
Masthead next to each
page number, so readers
get familiar with the
masthead and therefore
the brand
A bold colour like red for
one magazine, and blue
for the other so the
magazine stands out on
the shelf
Mainly white
pages so the
reader doesnât get
distracted from the
text, or find it
difficult to read.

Major
Anti
Flex
I am going to choose anti and major for my two
magazines, I am choosing these as I think they
are the most memorable and will stand out the
most on the magazine masthead
4. Font Style
For my font styles I have used basic, bold fonts.
This is because it makes it clear and easy to
read on the shelf. The bold font connotes
âloudâ which is something commonly
associated with rap and hip hop, so instantly
the audience will have an idea on what the
magazine genre is
(Prezident) (Jersey m54)
(Lemonmilk) (Gobold)
5. Font Styles Final
The final fonts I am going to choose are âPrezidentâ
for ANTI and âgoboldâ for Major. I have chosen these
as they are both simple but bold fonts, so will stand
out on the magazine cover attracting people to buy
it.
XXL is my magazine of inspiration, and the font for
their masthead is very similar to the ones I have
chosen. The fonts are very bold and simple. When
my fonts are made white and placed on a red
background, it will look very similar to XXL.
6. What I will repeat (Steve Neale 1980)
Similarities
⢠The masthead will be positioned like XXLâs is in
the top left corner, it will also be the same
colour and a similar style
⢠Also it will have similar conventions, as the
majority of magazines on the market look very
similar, with main headline large and other
stories positioned to the sides of the main image
, so I will follow the trend otherwise my
magazine may not look professional or up to
date. Also things such as barcodes which must
be on the magazine I will do similar to XXL and
have it located in the bottom corner
Differences
⢠I will have a different main image and different
headlines which I will get ideas for from my
magazine of inspiration
7. DPS Repeat
Similarities
I am going to have a image filling up an
entire page like the DPS here does, I am
also going to have the same conventions
as this one, with a drop capital, pull quote
and differentiated Q and A.
Differences
My magazine will be different as the
content on the page will be different. Also
I will position the pull quote on the same
page as the image rather than on the page
the Q and A is on.
12. Summary of ideas - ANTI
Genre
The genre of my magazine is going to be rap and hip hop, I am using the magazine XXL for my
inspiration, as it is a popular hip-hop/rap magazine which features a lot of well known artists.
Colours
I am going to use three very simple colours of red, black and white, this is because the black and
white will make it easy to read and the red will give it some colour making it stand out and look
bold, also red is the main colour from my magazine of inspiration, and this magazine is very
popular so the colour could also represent that it is popular, or of the same quality that XXL is.
Price
My magazine is going to cost ÂŁ3.99, this is so a wider audience are able to afford the magazine, as
competitor magazines are priced a lot higher so more people are likely to buy this magazine as it
is cheaper than the rest of the market
size
My magazine will be A4 size as this is the size for almost all magazines on the market.
13. Summary of ideas - Major
Genre
The genre of my magazine is going to be rap and hip hop, I am using the magazine XXL for my
inspiration
Colours
I am going to use three very simple colours of blue, black and white, this is because the black and
white will make it easy to read and the blue will stand out as there isn't many magazines which
are blue, therefore people will recognise the branding easier as they will identify blue with this
magazine.
14. Target Audience
Both my magazines are of the same genre, therefore the target market for both magazines will be
the same.
Hartleyâs Theory
Age: the age would be around 15-40 as most people between this age would be interested in
current music which is what my magazine will have, the majority of older people would be more
interested in music from their time.
Gender: the target gender will be male, as my magazine is going to be rap/hip-hop which is
mainly listened to by males
Katzâs Theory
Inform and Educate: The reader will learn about what the artists are doing or what they are
promoting in the magazine.
Personal identification: The readers may relate to the artist or their stories if they are talking
about having nothing then working hard to gain fame, which may inspire people who have
nothing to go out and make a name for themselves.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
The audience for this theory I think would be caregivers as the people reading the magazine want
to read the articles about artists they like and sympathize with struggles they are having or
something similar.
Socio-Economics
The majority of people buying the magazine would be from C1 or C2 as the magazine costs quite
a lot for what it is so lower classes may not be able to afford it. Also people of higher classes have
a taste in different music like classical which isn't covered in Q magazine
15. Form and Style
Layout
The layout of my magazine will be with the main image in the middle
of the front cover, the headlines will surround the main image and the
main headline will be larger than the rest covering a part of the main
image. The masthead will be in the top left corner but will be slightly
covered by the main image.
Colours
For my magazine I am going to use three colours. For my masthead I
am going to use red, as it stands out so will attract people to the
magazine. For the rest of my magazine I will use white for the
background and black for text and headlines as it stands out against
the white making it simple and easy to read.
Barcode
16. Front Cover inspiration
Cover Lines: The cover
lines are along the side of
the front cover, they donât
overlap the main image so
they are easy to read
against the white
background, the title of
the headlines are in bold
meaning they stand out,
inviting the reader in.
Main Headline:
The main headline
is the largest text
on the front cover,
this connotes to
the reader that it is
the most important
making them want
to read the article.
Also it is the only
text in a different
font and different
colour meaning it
stands out even
more
Main Image: The main
image is a long shot, this
means that the whole
artist is in the picture.
This is good as it means
as well as star appeal
there is also appeal to
the clothing which Is a
big part of rap and hip-
hop culture. People will
be attracted to the artist
and know the magazine
is current and cool by
the clothes they are
wearing.
Masthead: The
masthead is red, this
stands out against the
dull monochrome
colour of the rest, this
means readers will be
drawn to the masthead
making them remember
the brand
Barcode: The barcode is small and
placed in the corner, this is because
it isn't an important part of the
cover, it doesnât draw people to buy
it, therefore it is placed in the
corner so the rest of the magazine
can be larger and draw people in to
buy the magazine.
17. Double page spread Inspiration
The drop capital shows the
reader where the article
begins, this makes it a lot
easier for them to
navigate, as in some
articles the pages may be
very complex with several
columns. This is important
as if the reader finds it
easy to read they will find
it more enjoyable
Page number is in the bottom of every
page. This means the pages are
consistent, making it look professional.
It also means that the reader can easily
find pages by using the contents page
The title of the article is much
larger than all the other text on
the spread. This means the
readers eyes are drawn towards it
first, connoting that it is
important. It is only two words so
does not reveal much to the
reader, this makes them want to
read the article as they think that
it will be important and want to
find out the story behind the title. The image on this
spread takes up
an entire page,
this makes the
reader more
interested as they
have an image to
look at which
brings the text
alive rather than
having two full
pages of text
which may bore a
lot of people.
37. Hand Drawn Drafts And Graphic layout
conclusion
I have decided to go with the first graphic layout
for the front cover. This is because it looks most
like my magazine of inspiration, so I can make
my magazine look very similar to my inspiration.
38. Conclusion
⢠In LO2 I have created and planned two ideas
for a print based media product. I have chosen
to make two magazines, after I decided this I
brainstormed different names and ideas I may
choose, then I decided what my target market
would be, and how I would aim to target this
audience. After all this was complete, I drew
up some drafts and graphic layouts to give me
an idea of how they were going to look, and if
I liked or disliked it.
