Performance, Narrative and conceptual
1. Performance, Narrative and Conceptual
Performance
- Shows only the band / artist performing the song.
- It is considered the cheapest and the easiest type of video to make.
- Many shots must be used quickly in order to keep the video interesting, there is risk
that the video may look boring.
- https://youtu.be/EqWRaAF6_WY - This is an example of a performance video by the
Foo Fighters.
Narrative
- Footage which shows a storyline which runs throughout, sometimes it can be several
story lines running parallel.
- Can be with actors or sometimes with the actual artist themselves. The story line
links with the song itself / the lyrics.
- This style is good for certain themes and getting the point across to the audience.
- However, a lot must be considered with this such as, themes, locations, actors, mise-
en-scene etc. It can also be expensive to organise and plan.
- There is danger of the video looking cheesy / unoriginal.
- https://youtu.be/SR6iYWJxHqs?list=PL1487B0A90D0B66E5 – Bruno Mars – Grenade
shows a story and links with the song to show a narrative.
Conceptual
- Based around a single concept or an idea.
- Normally unusual and a lot harder to film. Mainly done with editing and Special FX,
this makes it harder to do but also more expensive.
- These videos aren’t very popular as they are harder to relate to.
- https://youtu.be/ghPcYqn0p4Y - This is the video for Sia – Breathe Me. The concept
is of photos and sticks to one theme.
