Three Main Areas of Our Music Videos
Performance –
- Usuallyshowsthe bandor artists performingorsnippetsof themdoingso.
- Usuallythe cheapesttomake.
- Editingbecomescrucial.
- Choice of shotsbecomescrucial. May become boringif shotsaren’t interesting
- Have to keepaudience interested.
Good example isBestof You – FooFighters.Videocontainsavarietyof cameraanglesand
movementsbutisalsointertwinedwithrandomvideofootageinordertomaintainaudience
attention.
Narrative –
- Containsmostlyfootage toshow a storyline orsometimesseveral storylinesrunning
parallel.
- Storyline will eitherlinktothe lyricsof the songor to the overall theme.
- If featuredina movie, the musicvideowill oftenincludeclipsfromsaidmovie orfilm.
- The beststyle forsuggestingthemestothe audience.Itisharderto filmandfar more is
requiredtobe thoughtabout.Includinglocation,actors,mise-en-sceneetc. andcan
potentiallybe farmore expensive to organise.
- Quite a large riskfor the videobecomingcheesyif lyricsfollow storyline toocloselyand
mimicittoo much.
- Example – BonJovi Always
- Narrative movie basedvideoisTeenage DirtbagbyWheatus
Conceptual –
- Basedarounda single conceptoridea.
- Quite unusual andare significantlyhardertofilm.Theyare mostlydone usingeditingand
special effects. Thisinturnmakesitmore expensive.
- Notalwaysverypopularas theyaren’tveryeasyto relate to,so notverymany videosare
purelyconceptual.
- Example – MonkeyDrummerbyAphex Twin
However,mostmusicvideosare acombinationif everything.Itmakesiteasiertorelate tolarge
audiences.Itcanmeanit becomesmore expensive andcomplicatedtoshoot.Michael Jackson –
Black or White isa good mixture of all three.
