2. Hajj: A journey of a lifetime
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam.
The Prophet said, "Whoever performs Hajj to this house – Ka'bah –
and does not commit any wrongdoing, they will return as the day
they were born – pure from sins." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Hajj is fard once in a lifetime. It only becomes fard if one has the
money needed to perform Hajj and is able to travel to Makkah. For a
woman, she must have her husband or a close male family member
(mahram) to accompany her on Hajj.
3. Types of Hajj
Hajj can be performed in different ways.
There are three types of Hajj:
• Hajj Qiran = Hajj + Umrah in one ihram.
• Hajj Tamattu = Hajj + Umrah in two ihrams.
• Hajj Ifrad = Only Hajj.

5. Day 1
Day 1: 8th Dhul Hijjah – Mina (Yawm at-Tarwiyah)
• Leave for Mina from Makkah after sunrise.
• Perform five Salah in Mina (Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and
Fajr of the 9th).
• Stay in Mina overnight.
6. Day 2
Day 2: 9th Dhul Hijjah – Arafah & Muzdalifah

7. Day 2
Day 2: 9th Dhul Hijjah – Arafah & Muzdalifah
• Leave Mina after sunrise.
• Wuquf (staying and stopping over) at Arafah lasts from zawal until sunset.
• Engage in dua and ibadah.
• Perform Zuhr and Asr.
• Leave after sunset without performing Maghrib.
• Go to Muzdalifah.
• Perform Maghrib and Isha together.
• Collect 70 pebbles.
• Spend the night in Muzdalifah.
• It is wajib to be in wuquf (remain) at Muzdalifah for a period between Fajr
and sunrise.
8. Day 3
10th Dhul Hijjah – Mina
• Leave Muzdalifah before sunrise and proceed to Mina.
• The following must be done in order: (Keyword: ‘PAS’)
1. Pelting (Jamarah al-'Aqabah: seven pebbles)
2. Animal sacrifice
3. Shaving or trimming of hair
The person is now free from ihram and its restrictions.
• Perform Tawaf Ziyarah and the wajib sa’ee of Hajj.
• Spend the night at Mina.
9. Day 4
Day 4: 11th Dhul Hijjah – Mina
• Pelt all three jamarat (7 pebbles each).
• The timing for ramy (pelting) is between zawal and sunset.
• If you have not done the animal sacrifice, Halaq/ Qasr or Tawaf Ziyarah
you may do it today.
• You cannot free yourself from ihram until Halaq/ Qasr has been done.
• Stay in Mina.
10. Day 5
Day 5: 12th Dhul Hijjah – Mina
• Pelt all three jamarat (7 pebbles each).
• If you have not done the Animal Sacrifice, Halaq/ Qasr or Tawaf Ziyarah
you may do it today.
• Leave Mina before sunset to Makkah.
