Formal Education
Education is very essential in life no matter what age you are. Every day is a new learning
experience, and the possibilities are endless. We are all different people with different mindsets and
life experiences. But, we do not need traditional schooling to further our experiences in education.
We all can learn various things that schooling will not be able to teach. Formaleducation can enforce
freedom, but to a certain extent. Social class and race can shape the education system on very high
grounds. In many ways, social class and race affect the education system. For instance, if one is
African American, they would be judged entirely on the color of their skin rather than their
knowledge. Is that fair? Absolutely not! They get...show more content...
A person is more likely to be more successful in life when attaining a higher degree. They can
pursue a successful career that they are passionate about. Higher education is beneficial because
no matter what you choose to do it will always be there to back you up in the future. Having a
college degree can help you with financial stability as well. But, in today's world, does having a
college degree mean you can get any job at any given place or time? Not always will you find jobs
that need certain degrees to be placed in jobs. Many places prefer no degree than having one. Some
jobs require something even higher. There are a few limitations on having higher education. Also, by
having higher education, it does not necessarily mean a person knows everything. You may have
little to no education and still learn and know more things than someone with higher education can.
For example, in Blue–Collar Brilliance, Mike Rose; Rose's mother had dropped out of school to help
support her family in a diner. She did not need school or a degree to develop psychological skills.
She knew how things worked in a person by socially connecting to them. "Her tip depended on how
well she responded to these needs, and so she became adept at reading social cues and managing
feelings, both the customers' and her own." (Rose). That goes to show that higher education is not
always needed in workplaces that use more connection to humans

I Think Therefore Im By Jennifer Lee Summary
"I Think, Therefore IM"
A style of writing is as unique as a fingerprint; no two styles are alike. Writing today is not what it
was 100 years ago, throughout the use of technology such as phones, laptops, and various apps; many
words have been fabricated and etched into everyday communication. The English language has been
modernized and branched out into many different styles of writing. In Jennifer Lee's article, "I
Think, Therefore IM", the author presents the issue of internet lingua franca being instilled into the
minds of school children, and being used in an academic setting. The issue is that these children will
then incorporate the internet slang into essays and other forms of schoolwork. Therefore, through
analysis of Lee's article,...show more content...
One teacher also stated that it didn't stop there and students showcased their internet lingo through
various symbols and smiley faces as well. Students began to rely on symbols when they couldn't
explain themselves through words. This kind of problem needs to be stopped at the root, otherwise
students could carry this bad habit of replacing words with symbols into adulthood. Ms. Weaver, a
high school teacher, said "They would be trying to make a point in a paper, they would put a
smiley face in the end,". It had gotten to a point where students used smiley faces to put an
emphasis on whatever point they were trying to make. They had began to rely on smiley faces
rather than words to convey what they're feeling. This substitution of words for symbols is very
inappropriate when it comes to dealings of papers written in a standard English format. It would be
unacceptable for these students to bring this style of writing into their college careers. It would also
be hard for them to acquire a position at their desired place of work if their employer takes notice to
their shorthand instant messaging language and use of symbols. Another teacher, Ms. Harding,
claimed that the instant messaging lingo was socially acceptable among students as well as "its
acceptable because it's in their culture... now we've got to overcome this new instant–messaging
language". Harding as well as many other teachers are making an effort to teach formal English and
break away from this new internet slang. This instant–messaging language has had a negative impact
on how students process their thoughts and the school work they produce. It has become a bigger
problem due to the fact that it is socially acceptable to their peers. However, educators like Ms.
Harding are making an effort to instill the fundamentals of standard English into the minds of

Formal Essays : My Experience In Writing
Formal Essays: My experience
When I was younger, middle school aged, is when I did most of my formal writing. I remember a
time, in particular, I had an assignment to write a paper on someone that I looked up to and that
inspired me. That person has always been my Grandma Mary. She is the best person I know. I
believe I was in the 8th grade when I wrote that essay about her, it gave me good experience in
formal writing. Formal writing hasn't always been something I feel I've been very at and
something I feel I've improved in quite a bit . I'd like to tell about my experience with writing
formal papers when I was younger, and how much I've learned since my younger days in writing.
I'm going to tell of my experiences in using online databases for research, and formatting a paper in
MLA.
When I was in middle school is when I did most of my formal writing. We mostly did essays when it
came to English class, I–step, tests, and sometimes even in History class. In my younger days I was
definitely not confident in my essay writing abilities. I knew how to tell of my story or whatever I
was trying to talk about in my essay but, I wasn't very grammatically correct. I never really had
topic sentences, a thesis statement, good punctuation, or anything like that. I just kind of had a
beginning, middle, and end. It was very simple and just a short story. My essays weren't ever very
great.
In high school I don't really remember writing a lot. I don't think I ever had many essays or

Formal Writing History
My history with formal writing: A challenging subject I had been putting off the research paper as
long as I could, now I was in real trouble. The night before the due date and all I had was my name
and four blank pages. The essay was to summarize the life of a famous person in history. The topic
was not the problem; it was my procrastination. I had always been good about getting my homework
done in time except when it came to formal writing. Formal writing has always been hard for me
because of the formatting and citing, I am hoping this class will help me overcome these obstacles
and make writing fun and enjoyable. I will first tell you about my history with formal writing, then I
will talk about using online article databases and googling information. I will then discuss my
experience with sources and quotes, using MLA format and my experience using in–text
parenthetical citations....show more content...
I haven't had to write a lot of papers in my life besides the occasional assignments in middle school
and high school. Back in middle school it was mainly trying to get your handwriting down, creating
rough drafts and then finalizing them in Microsoft Word. I had a few papers to write in high
school but we were given multiple days to research and brainstorm what we wanted to talk about.
This is really the first class I have taken that is dedicated to writing formal essays in a specified
format with topics that are a little more challenging than what I have experienced in the

A Well-Written Essay: A Briefly Explained
This is a well written essay, each paragraph has a clear topic sentence to keep the text organized
and the author supported with evidence on every claim that were made. However, I think the
author needs to add a little more of what is happening in the shows. For example, briefly
summarizing the stories would be better for the reader if the readers have not watched any of the

Before this class, I was terrified of writing papers. In high school we did not write that much and
when we did, we were expected to know how to do it. My teachers never went into as much depth
and detail as we did in this class. Writing in general was one of my biggest challenges coming into
this class. In class we had to write reflections about ourselves and our week in class. I would
always struggle with these because I would never know what to write about or how to start it.
However, I got more comfortable with formal writing. I felt more comfortable with these because it
was like following a formula. With the formal papers, I had directions and with those I was able
to find a topic and execute the paper more easily. This reflected in my grades as well because, I
would get higher grades on the formal papers and lower grades on my reflections. I am going to
demonstrate how I struggled on the reflection journals and did not struggle on the formal writing
assignments. I succeeded more in the formal writing because we learned ways to make the writing
easier. One thing that helped was outlining. In class we learned that "prewriting builds cohesion and
coherence of the body of the essay" (Appendix I). Outlining helps you organize your paper and see if
all of your ideas connect with each other. (Appendix I). Before this class, I would never make an
outline and all of my papers were incoherent and sloppy. This process helped me to become more

Formal Communication
Formal Communication
Formal communication can be considered as communication efforts that are "dressed up" to fit
customary rules and ceremony For example, in a written letter, the formal communication style will
demand that the layout of the piece of written communication follow a specific format that includes
the date, header, salutation, body of the letter, close, signature lines and any indicators of enclosures
all placed neatly upon company letterhead or personal stationery. By contrast, an informal piece of
written communication can be as simple as a jotted note to a friend on a torn slip of paper
Formal communications are mostly written, although they may now also include formal
presentations that are on computer disk, video tape...show more content...
Such formal communication is well established and planned. For example, reports and data from
staff are organized are generally submitted in prescribed templates and according to a set schedule.
Communication focused on a company's strategy and direction, which originates from company
executives, is funnelled through the organizational chart and changed in such a way to be relevant to
each department and manager. What starts out as "high–level" communication on corporate strategy
needs to be thought out through planning sessions so that the communication provides direction and
is actionable for the individuals who implement the tasks of the strategy. The better the
communication the better employees and staff will understand what is expected and required of
them. advertisement

Being an Effective Communicator. Informal Communication in the Workplace
On the other hand, informal communication in the workplace satisfies a variety of needs,
particularly social and emotional, and are not based on the positions individuals occupy within the
organizations. As a result, the communication is not managed or planned in any organized fashion.
It's more relaxed, casual and tends to be spread by word–of–mouth quickly throughout a department
or organization because it's not restricted to approvals and

My experience with formal essay writing goes back as fifth grade for a D.A.R.E contest. This
experience was one that I never forgot as it was my first experience with anxiety over writing. I
sat in my room with the paper and pencil for hours and kept writing down all my thoughts. That
process seemed to be easy to me as I had a lot of thoughts about the D.A.R.E program but when it
came to putting those thoughts together it became a struggle to me. I finally finished but never felt
satisfied with my work and the thought of someone reading my work made me extremely anxious.
The feelings of anxiety that I had in fifth grade are feelings that I still have, even as I write this essay
now. Arranging my thoughts together into a formal essay has

Journal Articles And Formal Essays
When one thinks of a documented essay, journal articles and formal essays come to mind. However,
lab reports are also in this classification and are different compared to other academic writing. For
students, it helps their instructor know if they understand their scientific assignments. They actually
describe and analyze everything that was accomplished in an experiment. How you explain what
you did and what you learn is the aim of this type of writing.
The main reason for their uniqueness is how they are written. Lab reports are technical with structure
and a focus in mind. Meanwhile, essays are concerned whether their paragraphs are separated
fluently and make sense overall. Lab reports name each section with a heading and individually have
a specific purpose. For instance, they are typically divided into the six categories: the summary,
introduction, procedure, results, conclusion, and references.
Also known as the "abstract", the summary explains the outline and the important aspects of the
experiment. They even express the reason for the report. It makes the reader determine whether they
want to read the entire report or not. Sometimes big companies base their decisions to the results of
reports that concern them, so it is important to have persuasion. The perfect length for them is
between one hundred to two hundred words.
Next is the introduction, which might confuse a person who has never dealt with lab reports before.
The introduction is not the summary of the

I was 10 years old when I received my first formal essay assignment. This assignment set me on a
path of writing fear and has been something I could not fix for nearly 30 years. Formal writing has
always been a fear of mine, for a very long time. Over the years, I have been hesitant to attend any
college for fear of writing assignments and classes that will be required. In the beginning of this essay
, I describe how the fear of formal writing happened, the reasons it has continued to affect my
confidence in writing and how I have continued to avoid any type of formal writing for 30 years.
In the second part of this essay, I will describe my experiences with different writing applications
and training tools used to improve formal writing. It was 1978 and I was one of only three African
American kids in my class. The assignment was to write a 3–page essay on someone you fell was
influential in society. Growing up in Atlanta, every African America child was influenced by the
great Dr. Martin Luther King. So, I decided to write my paper on the life of Dr. King. I was sure that
I was going to get a grade of A, on my essay. I was sure that I knew everything there was to know
about Dr. King life and placed all of this knowledge into my essay. When I received my essay back
from grading, it had an F grade on it and red ink all over it. I was destroyed on the inside and my
confidence was lost. As I continued to go through school, my writing skills never improved. I just

Text-Speak Is Harming Teens Writing Skills
Texting is harming the ability for this current generation of children to write in a formal manner.
"Digitalk" is what Kristen Hawley Turner of Fordham University calls, text–speak. For example,
many teens will text "g2g" in replace of the actual words "got to go".In my opinion, texting is
ruining students' abilities to write a formal essay, letter, etc. In the passage "Text–speak Is Harming
Teens Writing Skills", it says that "Researchers in Pennsylvania State University gave middle
schoolers a grammar test."They found that teens who frequently used ""text–speak"" performed
poorly. This proves that once students begin to use text–speak,it becomes a habit that is hard to break.
In addition to,researchers also say that "[It] may rob this age group

In the essay "I Think, Therefore IM," by Jennifer Lee, she explains how texting and the internet life
is effecting kids today in their English classes. She tells how teachers are threating the students, if
the students use speed writing in their writings. Some others teachers decided to use the new step in
the language evolution by comparing today's language to Shakespeare language. Some teachers are
worried about today's youth and how will they effect the English language. While other teachers can't
wait to see how the language will change. The essay would qualify under a descriptive article
because the author does not take a side in the text and shows facts and both sides of the story. Lee

Formal Letter
FORMAL LETTER INTRODUCTION Dear Lindsay and Michael, I am writing you this letter to
give you some friendly advice about interpersonal communication within your relationship with each
other. I hope that these helpful tips help you both to make your communication thrive in your newly
found engagement. There are many things that I would like to touch base on with you both; as I
wish someone would have informed my fiancГ© and me when we decided to spend our lives
together as well. An article I read states, when couples come together in marriage, they are faced
initially with series of problems and differences that challenge their stability. This requires that on
both sides, compromises, agreements and endurances must be met in...show more content...
Three hypotheses were tested using chi–square at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that
emotion management has significant effect on marital adjustment of couples. Emotional sensitivity
skills were found to have significant effects on marital adjustment of couples. Social relationship
skills had significant effect on marital adjustment of couples. Based on the findings, it was
recommended that in both premarital and marital counselling, couples should be introduced to the
competencies of Emotional intelligence. Through conjoint marital therapy, couples should be taught
interpersonal relationship (communication) skills. Couples should be helped to develop emotion
management skills. Couples should be taught emotional sensitivity skills. Ortese, P.T., &
Tor–Anyiin, S. (2008). UNDERSTANDING HOW PERCEPTIONS, EMOTIONS, AND
NONVERBAL EXPRESSIONS AFFECT INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS "Pay attention to
the "unspoken" part of listening –– body language, tone of voice, and use of words. Both the listener
and the speaker convey so much by the way that they hold their bodies." Kang, S. (2012, Sep 13).
Words do not always have to be said to express feelings. Actions show an immense amount of
communication; as the old saying goes, "Actions speak louder than words". For example, if you,

Essay On Formal Writing
13. When should you write like you talk and when is it best to be more formal?
There are two forms of communication: formal and casual. When writing, you need to know your
audience and select your words carefully. Formal writing is used in professional settings, college
level papers, book reports, writing to an authority's figure, or business to allow you to get your
point across without using offensive words or voice. This type of writing is eloquent with proper
use of grammar and phrases to add credibility to what you are saying. Formal writing should never
use slang or abbreviated words. Formal writing is extremely important to allow the writer to create a
business presentation or formal business letter that sounds educated and...show more content...
Although, as in formal writing, you cannot always use the same simple words. The use of big
words gives ones writing more punch and helps the reader to improve their vocabulary. It is very
important when using big words that they are used appropriately and do not change the content of
what is being written. A writer needs to use caution when picking big words. If the reader has
trouble understanding the words used then what the writer is trying to say gets lost. Some may
also say that using big words makes the writer look pompous. There is a very fine line between
using the precise word, and using a word that sounds important. It is more important to select the
precise word to describe a situation, than to settle on another word that just doesn't convey the same
feeling. As Mark Twain once said, "The difference between the almost right word and the right word
is really a large matter – it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." 15. Why is
the "you–viewpoint" important and why should you avoid using the "you–viewpoint"
manipulatively?
The you–viewpoint helps the writer grab the reader's attention and bases its points on the reader's
interest. The writer needs to concentrate on what the reader needs versus what you want from the
reader. This type of writing strengthens the writer's persuasiveness. Youneed

NaivetГ© is ignorance due to a lack of formal education. It would appear that the term naivetГ©
would apply as well to one who was taught, albeit insufficiently. The majority of the human world is
naГЇve and abandoned, causing them to remain that way, whether through inability to access a form
of formal education or through the inabilities of the teachers attempting to teach them. It would
appear that the lack of education is a major problem in the world. The worldwide lack of education
is due mainly to the scarce availability of formal schooling and its limited depth. In many

Therefore, farming becomes a much more time and labor intensive effort, in effect lowering the
maximum yield and profit. When a surplus of an item is readily available, it is cheaper. Because
there is less produce planted and harvested and because it takes longer and more effort, produce
becomes more expensive, which makes it a loss for everyone. Additionally, no two people have
the same potential for inventing, improving, or discovering a piece of modern science. For
example, one person has the potential to come up with an amazing piece of technology or
medicine and execute it well, and he is not able to execute it because he is uneducated. While it
would be idiotic to claim that it would never be fashioned, it is clear that it would take far longer
before its implementation in general society. As a direct result of this, the generalhuman populace of
the world remains in the so–called "Dark Ages" that this discovery could dispel. For example,
imagine the world without Alexander Graham Bell. To contact someone one would have to send
a telegram; conversation with a remotely located person would be impossible. If Thomas Edison
lived in Africa and was uneducated his whole life the world would not exist as we know it. No

would exist. The lack of education is all encompassing and all

Many writers share their experiences about literacy and language. The writer Helen Keller wrote
The Day Language Came into My Life, an essay where she tells the reader her experience with
how she learned how to speak, read and write even though she is blind and deaf. Amy Tan wrote
Mother Tongue, an essay where she talks about the trouble of speaking English as an immigrant in
a new country. Frederick Douglass wrote Learning to Read and Write, an essay where he talks
about becoming literate during a time when slaves were not allowed to read and write. They all talk
about literacy in their own ways, but at some point they all had some similarities in their experiences.

But then, later on, as a result of bad influence from her husband, she became even more violent in her
opposition to his learning to read than her husband himself. He felt that his knowledge only brought
bad things to him and reminded him that he was a slave who could never be anything else in life.
Overcoming this obstacle was one of the biggest challenges that Douglass would have to face.
However, later on, he started making friends with all those he met in the streets of their
neighborhood. He learned lessons and got more knowledge from them and would give bread in
return. He said, "This bread I used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who, in return, would
give me that more valuable bread of knowledge" (Douglass 88) He used to read all the readings,
magazines, news papers, and etc. to gain knowledge, he said, "The reading of these documents
enabled me to utter my thoughts" (Douglass 88) However, he wasn't happy to learn literacy and
become educated, because he said, "I would at time feel that learning to read had been a curse
rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy"
(Douglass 89) He saw an enslaved person escape and brought back to his owner again. He knew he
also had to escape but he waited for a safe time to do so, because he was too young to make himself
free and besides, he has to learn how to write. He "Might have occasion to

During this course, learning APA formatting for papers has been instrumental. This style of
formatting is commonly used in academic writing assignments due to its general universal
uniformity and ability to properly credit the sources from which the paper is refer to from.
Appropriate uses of references are annotated by using in–text citations that align with the reference
list located on the last page of a paper. Together, they allow the reader to verify where the
information has been obtained. In addition, to having the ability to confirm material, APA style
of writing assist the writer in avoiding plagiarism by accurately stating where the information in a
paper was received. Covey's "Sharpen the Saw" habit is beneficial to a student's wellbeing and
wellness because it keeps them alert and does not allow room for complacency as well as sharpens
time managing skills. This includes the body and mind. By continuously renovating one's self, it
allows that individual to grow and expand in all parts of their life. As a student, this applies to
studies, time management and Grit. By reintroducing your mind to a task or subject, you open the
mind to being more accepting, to include retaining knowledge from each class taken. Stress levels
are reduced when time is properly managed. Refocusing and recommitting to a goal, in a student's

3. Introduction to Communication
Communication is a largely learned skill throughout the world. However, because most people are
born with the ability to speak, not all can communicate as they may have a disorder such as, being
deaf. People who cannot communicate can make special efforts to develop and refine their skills of
communication further. Very often, people take it for granted knowing that we communicate with
each other for granted. However, sometimes people dont keep in mind how important and complex
communication actually is. There are two types of communication 1) one–way communication and
2) two–way communication.
5. One–way and Two–way Communication
One–way Communication (i)
One–way communication consists of two main purposes....show more content...
Formal and Informal Communication
Formal Communication (i)
The meaning of formal communications is when one is required to type a verbal presentation or
document, which must be followed by professional rules, and also consists of ways to avoid the
use of slang words. For example, letters are a formal method of communication, as one may be
required to send a letter that contains relevant information. In addition, people write formal letters
to those who are respective chairs of a business or have high status. Examples of people one would
send a formal letter to are people like principles, teachers, police inspectors, doctors or CEO's.
Informal Communication (ii)
The meaning of informal communication is simply the opposite of formal communication. Informal
communication can occur whilst one is not working. In addition, it consists of someone having a
casual informal conversation with family or friends. However, informal communication should
almost never happen whilst working. An example of informal communication is socializing.
Socializing is an informal way of communication as it consists of learning outside of an institution.
In addition, as these people are close to one and are trustworthy, one may feel free to have an
informal conversation with them. This type of communication helps one in the aspect of interacting
with others around

No, I don't have experience with AP style writing. The only writing I've done professionally has
been through working at the library or through the answering service, such as, correspondences,

other students. I did write one letter to the editor, I believe in 2009, requesting people to slow

Formal Essay Writing

  • 1. Formal Education Education is very essential in life no matter what age you are. Every day is a new learning experience, and the possibilities are endless. We are all different people with different mindsets and life experiences. But, we do not need traditional schooling to further our experiences in education. We all can learn various things that schooling will not be able to teach. Formaleducation can enforce freedom, but to a certain extent. Social class and race can shape the education system on very high grounds. In many ways, social class and race affect the education system. For instance, if one is African American, they would be judged entirely on the color of their skin rather than their knowledge. Is that fair? Absolutely not! They get...show more content... A person is more likely to be more successful in life when attaining a higher degree. They can pursue a successful career that they are passionate about. Higher education is beneficial because no matter what you choose to do it will always be there to back you up in the future. Having a college degree can help you with financial stability as well. But, in today's world, does having a college degree mean you can get any job at any given place or time? Not always will you find jobs that need certain degrees to be placed in jobs. Many places prefer no degree than having one. Some jobs require something even higher. There are a few limitations on having higher education. Also, by having higher education, it does not necessarily mean a person knows everything. You may have little to no education and still learn and know more things than someone with higher education can. For example, in Blue–Collar Brilliance, Mike Rose; Rose's mother had dropped out of school to help support her family in a diner. She did not need school or a degree to develop psychological skills. She knew how things worked in a person by socially connecting to them. "Her tip depended on how well she responded to these needs, and so she became adept at reading social cues and managing feelings, both the customers' and her own." (Rose). That goes to show that higher education is not always needed in workplaces that use more connection to humans Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. I Think Therefore Im By Jennifer Lee Summary "I Think, Therefore IM" A style of writing is as unique as a fingerprint; no two styles are alike. Writing today is not what it was 100 years ago, throughout the use of technology such as phones, laptops, and various apps; many words have been fabricated and etched into everyday communication. The English language has been modernized and branched out into many different styles of writing. In Jennifer Lee's article, "I Think, Therefore IM", the author presents the issue of internet lingua franca being instilled into the minds of school children, and being used in an academic setting. The issue is that these children will then incorporate the internet slang into essays and other forms of schoolwork. Therefore, through analysis of Lee's article,...show more content... One teacher also stated that it didn't stop there and students showcased their internet lingo through various symbols and smiley faces as well. Students began to rely on symbols when they couldn't explain themselves through words. This kind of problem needs to be stopped at the root, otherwise students could carry this bad habit of replacing words with symbols into adulthood. Ms. Weaver, a high school teacher, said "They would be trying to make a point in a paper, they would put a smiley face in the end,". It had gotten to a point where students used smiley faces to put an emphasis on whatever point they were trying to make. They had began to rely on smiley faces rather than words to convey what they're feeling. This substitution of words for symbols is very inappropriate when it comes to dealings of papers written in a standard English format. It would be unacceptable for these students to bring this style of writing into their college careers. It would also be hard for them to acquire a position at their desired place of work if their employer takes notice to their shorthand instant messaging language and use of symbols. Another teacher, Ms. Harding, claimed that the instant messaging lingo was socially acceptable among students as well as "its acceptable because it's in their culture... now we've got to overcome this new instant–messaging language". Harding as well as many other teachers are making an effort to teach formal English and break away from this new internet slang. This instant–messaging language has had a negative impact on how students process their thoughts and the school work they produce. It has become a bigger problem due to the fact that it is socially acceptable to their peers. However, educators like Ms. Harding are making an effort to instill the fundamentals of standard English into the minds of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Formal Essays : My Experience In Writing Formal Essays: My experience When I was younger, middle school aged, is when I did most of my formal writing. I remember a time, in particular, I had an assignment to write a paper on someone that I looked up to and that inspired me. That person has always been my Grandma Mary. She is the best person I know. I believe I was in the 8th grade when I wrote that essay about her, it gave me good experience in formal writing. Formal writing hasn't always been something I feel I've been very at and something I feel I've improved in quite a bit . I'd like to tell about my experience with writing formal papers when I was younger, and how much I've learned since my younger days in writing. I'm going to tell of my experiences in using online databases for research, and formatting a paper in MLA. When I was in middle school is when I did most of my formal writing. We mostly did essays when it came to English class, I–step, tests, and sometimes even in History class. In my younger days I was definitely not confident in my essay writing abilities. I knew how to tell of my story or whatever I was trying to talk about in my essay but, I wasn't very grammatically correct. I never really had topic sentences, a thesis statement, good punctuation, or anything like that. I just kind of had a beginning, middle, and end. It was very simple and just a short story. My essays weren't ever very great. In high school I don't really remember writing a lot. I don't think I ever had many essays or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Formal Writing History My history with formal writing: A challenging subject I had been putting off the research paper as long as I could, now I was in real trouble. The night before the due date and all I had was my name and four blank pages. The essay was to summarize the life of a famous person in history. The topic was not the problem; it was my procrastination. I had always been good about getting my homework done in time except when it came to formal writing. Formal writing has always been hard for me because of the formatting and citing, I am hoping this class will help me overcome these obstacles and make writing fun and enjoyable. I will first tell you about my history with formal writing, then I will talk about using online article databases and googling information. I will then discuss my experience with sources and quotes, using MLA format and my experience using in–text parenthetical citations....show more content... I haven't had to write a lot of papers in my life besides the occasional assignments in middle school and high school. Back in middle school it was mainly trying to get your handwriting down, creating rough drafts and then finalizing them in Microsoft Word. I had a few papers to write in high school but we were given multiple days to research and brainstorm what we wanted to talk about. This is really the first class I have taken that is dedicated to writing formal essays in a specified format with topics that are a little more challenging than what I have experienced in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

A Well-Written Essay: A Briefly Explained This is a well written essay, each paragraph has a clear topic sentence to keep the text organized and the author supported with evidence on every claim that were made. • 6. Before this class, I was terrified of writing papers. In high school we did not write that much and when we did, we were expected to know how to do it. My teachers never went into as much depth and detail as we did in this class. Writing in general was one of my biggest challenges coming into this class. In class we had to write reflections about ourselves and our week in class. I would always struggle with these because I would never know what to write about or how to start it. However, I got more comfortable with formal writing. I felt more comfortable with these because it was like following a formula. With the formal papers, I had directions and with those I was able to find a topic and execute the paper more easily. This reflected in my grades as well because, I would get higher grades on the formal papers and lower grades on my reflections. I am going to demonstrate how I struggled on the reflection journals and did not struggle on the formal writing assignments. I succeeded more in the formal writing because we learned ways to make the writing easier. One thing that helped was outlining. In class we learned that "prewriting builds cohesion and coherence of the body of the essay" (Appendix I). Outlining helps you organize your paper and see if all of your ideas connect with each other. (Appendix I). Before this class, I would never make an outline and all of my papers were incoherent and sloppy. This process helped me to become more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Formal Communication Formal Communication Formal communication can be considered as communication efforts that are "dressed up" to fit customary rules and ceremony For example, in a written letter, the formal communication style will demand that the layout of the piece of written communication follow a specific format that includes the date, header, salutation, body of the letter, close, signature lines and any indicators of enclosures all placed neatly upon company letterhead or personal stationery. By contrast, an informal piece of written communication can be as simple as a jotted note to a friend on a torn slip of paper Formal communications are mostly written, although they may now also include formal presentations that are on computer disk, video tape...show more content... Communication focused on a company's strategy and direction, which originates from company executives, is funnelled through the organizational chart and changed in such a way to be relevant to each department and manager. What starts out as "high–level" communication on corporate strategy needs to be thought out through planning sessions so that the communication provides direction and is actionable for the individuals who implement the tasks of the strategy. The better the communication the better employees and staff will understand what is expected and required of them. advertisement Communicate Better, Lead Better Successful people are good communicators. Informal Communication in the Workplace On the other hand, informal communication in the workplace satisfies a variety of needs, particularly social and emotional, and are not based on the positions individuals occupy within the organizations. • 8. My experience with formal essay writing goes back as fifth grade for a D.A.R.E contest. This experience was one that I never forgot as it was my first experience with anxiety over writing. I sat in my room with the paper and pencil for hours and kept writing down all my thoughts. That process seemed to be easy to me as I had a lot of thoughts about the D.A.R.E program but when it came to putting those thoughts together it became a struggle to me. I finally finished but never felt satisfied with my work and the thought of someone reading my work made me extremely anxious. • 9. Journal Articles And Formal Essays When one thinks of a documented essay, journal articles and formal essays come to mind. However, lab reports are also in this classification and are different compared to other academic writing. For students, it helps their instructor know if they understand their scientific assignments. They actually describe and analyze everything that was accomplished in an experiment. How you explain what you did and what you learn is the aim of this type of writing. The main reason for their uniqueness is how they are written. Lab reports are technical with structure and a focus in mind. Meanwhile, essays are concerned whether their paragraphs are separated fluently and make sense overall. Lab reports name each section with a heading and individually have a specific purpose. For instance, they are typically divided into the six categories: the summary, introduction, procedure, results, conclusion, and references. Also known as the "abstract", the summary explains the outline and the important aspects of the experiment. They even express the reason for the report. It makes the reader determine whether they want to read the entire report or not. Sometimes big companies base their decisions to the results of reports that concern them, so it is important to have persuasion. The perfect length for them is between one hundred to two hundred words. Next is the introduction, which might confuse a person who has never dealt with lab reports before. The introduction is not the summary of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. I was 10 years old when I received my first formal essay assignment. This assignment set me on a path of writing fear and has been something I could not fix for nearly 30 years. Formal writing has always been a fear of mine, for a very long time. Over the years, I have been hesitant to attend any college for fear of writing assignments and classes that will be required. In the beginning of this essay , I describe how the fear of formal writing happened, the reasons it has continued to affect my confidence in writing and how I have continued to avoid any type of formal writing for 30 years. In the second part of this essay, I will describe my experiences with different writing applications and training tools used to improve formal writing. It was 1978 and I was one of only three African American kids in my class. The assignment was to write a 3–page essay on someone you fell was influential in society. Growing up in Atlanta, every African America child was influenced by the great Dr. Martin Luther King. So, I decided to write my paper on the life of Dr. King. I was sure that I was going to get a grade of A, on my essay. I was sure that I knew everything there was to know about Dr. King life and placed all of this knowledge into my essay. Based on the findings, it was recommended that in both premarital and marital counselling, couples should be introduced to the competencies of Emotional intelligence. Through conjoint marital therapy, couples should be taught interpersonal relationship (communication) skills. Couples should be helped to develop emotion management skills. • 14. Essay On Formal Writing 13. When should you write like you talk and when is it best to be more formal? There are two forms of communication: formal and casual. When writing, you need to know your audience and select your words carefully. Formal writing is used in professional settings, college level papers, book reports, writing to an authority's figure, or business to allow you to get your point across without using offensive words or voice. This type of writing is eloquent with proper use of grammar and phrases to add credibility to what you are saying. Formal writing should never use slang or abbreviated words. Although, as in formal writing, you cannot always use the same simple words. The use of big words gives ones writing more punch and helps the reader to improve their vocabulary. It is very important when using big words that they are used appropriately and do not change the content of what is being written. A writer needs to use caution when picking big words. If the reader has trouble understanding the words used then what the writer is trying to say gets lost. Some may also say that using big words makes the writer look pompous. There is a very fine line between using the precise word, and using a word that sounds important. It is more important to select the precise word to describe a situation, than to settle on another word that just doesn't convey the same feeling. As Mark Twain once said, "The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter – it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." 15. Why is the "you–viewpoint" important and why should you avoid using the "you–viewpoint" manipulatively? The you–viewpoint helps the writer grab the reader's attention and bases its points on the reader's interest. The writer needs to concentrate on what the reader needs versus what you want from the reader. This type of writing strengthens the writer's persuasiveness. The majority of the human world is naГЇve and abandoned, causing them to remain that way, whether through inability to access a form of formal education or through the inabilities of the teachers attempting to teach them. It would appear that the lack of education is a major problem in the world. The worldwide lack of education is due mainly to the scarce availability of formal schooling and its limited depth. Additionally, no two people have the same potential for inventing, improving, or discovering a piece of modern science. For example, one person has the potential to come up with an amazing piece of technology or medicine and execute it well, and he is not able to execute it because he is uneducated. While it would be idiotic to claim that it would never be fashioned, it is clear that it would take far longer before its implementation in general society. As a direct result of this, the generalhuman populace of the world remains in the so–called "Dark Ages" that this discovery could dispel. For example, imagine the world without Alexander Graham Bell. To contact someone one would have to send a telegram; conversation with a remotely located person would be impossible. The writer Helen Keller wrote The Day Language Came into My Life, an essay where she tells the reader her experience with how she learned how to speak, read and write even though she is blind and deaf. Amy Tan wrote Mother Tongue, an essay where she talks about the trouble of speaking English as an immigrant in a new country. Overcoming this obstacle was one of the biggest challenges that Douglass would have to face. However, later on, he started making friends with all those he met in the streets of their neighborhood. He learned lessons and got more knowledge from them and would give bread in return. He said, "This bread I used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who, in return, would give me that more valuable bread of knowledge" (Douglass 88) He used to read all the readings, magazines, news papers, and etc. to gain knowledge, he said, "The reading of these documents enabled me to utter my thoughts" (Douglass 88) However, he wasn't happy to learn literacy and become educated, because he said, "I would at time feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy" (Douglass 89) He saw an enslaved person escape and brought back to his owner again. This style of formatting is commonly used in academic writing assignments due to its general universal uniformity and ability to properly credit the sources from which the paper is refer to from. Appropriate uses of references are annotated by using in–text citations that align with the reference list located on the last page of a paper. Together, they allow the reader to verify where the information has been obtained. In addition, to having the ability to confirm material, APA style of writing assist the writer in avoiding plagiarism by accurately stating where the information in a paper was received. Covey's "Sharpen the Saw" habit is beneficial to a student's wellbeing and wellness because it keeps them alert and does not allow room for complacency as well as sharpens time managing skills. This includes the body and mind. By continuously renovating one's self, it allows that individual to grow and expand in all parts of their life. As a student, this applies to studies, time management and Grit. By reintroducing your mind to a task or subject, you open the mind to being more accepting, to include retaining knowledge from each class taken. However, because most people are born with the ability to speak, not all can communicate as they may have a disorder such as, being deaf. Very often, people take it for granted knowing that we communicate with each other for granted. However, sometimes people dont keep in mind how important and complex communication actually is. I did write one letter to the editor, I believe in 2009, requesting people to slow down in the area that are heavily populated by the Amish. I also help support a local Facebook page called Oil City Landmarks, it's more of a photography based site. To actually say I've professionally, as in writing a book, article or for a publication, that would be a no. I learn comprehensively through all means. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
