the borders and not let anyone leave or
come in to the country.
This excluded them from trading or being
in contact with any other society.

stayed behind.
Essentially Japan was living a life in the
1600’s when Europe was in the 1800’s.
It excluded Japan from all the new
technology and further development.
4. • A general from the United States came
to Japan with gun boats and told Japan
they need to open their borders, pick
their economy up, and begin trade with
the rest of society.
• The general threatened to bring more
gun boats to Japan if they refuse trade.
• It was a scare for Japan and they
realized something needed to change.
5. In the next 50 years they went from
being really behind to being one of the
top 5 industrial countries.
They defeated Russia twice in war and
dominated most of Asia.
8. Made feudalism more strict.
Made rules to keep from feudal wars.
Resulted in centralized feudalism.
9. Daimyo’s were required to live in Edo,
Japans capital, every other year.
Their wives and children stayed in Edo.
Daimyo’s weren’t allowed to repair
castles or marry without permission.
Only Samurai’s were able to fight or hold
a government job.
10. War declined and peace began to
settle in Japan.
Farming and agriculture became a more
important focus than war.
New trade routes began to spring up.
The end of the Tokugawa Shogunate
brought about the end of Japan’s
feudal system.
