3. The history of Christianity in
Europe begins with Paul. He was in
Rome, Italy and wrote his epistles
from there while in prison.
Christian tradition states that Peter
was in Rome for a short time and
was crucified during the Neronian
persecution of Christians. After
A.D. 70, Rome became one of the
chief centers of Christian
development.
4. From the beginning, Christians were
subject to various persecutions. According
to Church tradition, it was under Nero's
persecution that Peter and Paul were
each martyred in Rome. For 250 years
Christians suffered from sporadic
persecutions for their refusal to worship
the Roman emperor ,considered
treasonous and punishable by execution.
5. Around the late 200's there was
a time of peace and rapid
growth of Christianity. By 300
Christianity was found in all
parts of the Roman Empire,
including central Italy. Around
313, Constantine, a Christian
and the Roman emperor,
proclaimed freedom of
conscience for the people, made
Christianity on a full legal
equality with any religion in
Rome, and ordered all church
property restored that had been
confiscated during the most
recent time of persecution. The
next step for Constantine was to
make Christianity the state
religion of Rome.

Many scholars have
written that catacombs
came about to help
persecuted Christians
to bury their dead
secretly.
The Christian
catacombs are
extremely important
for the art history of
early Christian art, as
they contain the great
majority of examples
from before about 400
AD, in fresco and
sculpture.

• Christianism is
introduced in France
by eastern merchants
very early.
• But the new religion
was forbidden in the
Roman Empire and

martyrdoms.
Pothin is the first bishop of Lyon.
He is killed with Sainte Blandine
and other christians in the
amphitheatre in 177.
9. Evangelizing the countryside
• The Roman Empire becomes
christian.There were many
christians in the South of
France, mostly in towns.
• Monks or bishops such as
Saint Martin de Tours
evangelized the countryside
which was still pagan.
10. The King of France becomes a christian
• Gaul is invaded by
« barbarians » who are
pagan.
• Clovis, the King of Francs,
is married to Clothilde a
christian princess. During
the battle of Tolbiac, he’s
said to have promised to
convert if he won the
battle, which he did.
• But he also needed the
help of the Church.
• Around 496, Clovis, king
of the Francs is baptised
in Reims.
12. In 966 – Polish
country was baptized
by Czech clergymen,
with a permission
of German.

15. • King Olav (Olaf) Haraldsson is a major
name connected to the christianisation
of Norway.
• He worked on introducing Christianity
in Norway, but he was killed in the
middle of this work in 1030.
• The king established the Catholic church
as state religion, the decision was made
in 1023.
• King Olav later became a saint.

16. • It is said that Christianity was
introduced in Norway from 1030.
• There are several churches around the
country that originates from this time.
• Some of the churches are called Olaf
Churches and are consecrated to Saint
Olaf.
18. • On a trip to England, he talked with some
bishops about his faith.
• When he came home to Norway, he had become
a Christian.
• He declared that he wanted to make Norway
a Christian country.
• But the country was already in progress of taking
the new religion into their homes.

19. • In 1030 Olav came back to Trondheim after a couple of
years in exile in the Garda kingdom (Russia); he wanted the
power of our country back.
• But on the 29th
of July 1030 Olav was killed in the Battle of
Stiklestad.
• Stiklestad is a destination for pilgrims.
• After his death, the hair and his fingernails were still
growing. This and his strong feelings about the religion are
the main reasons that he was announced as a saint.
