The furniture industry has been pretty standard up to about 10-15 years
Trends have come and gone as I thought would be the case 15 years ago on environmental and sustainability rating systems
Being Wisconsin based we were much different than the majors based in Grand Rapids Michigan
So what's happened??
After several major economic downturns in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s many of the mature A&D folks retired and moved on
As a result of the business and technology markets the A&D firms expanded to other markets such as Healthcare and education
The folks were younger and turned to “online” stuff for research. As a result they see fewer sales people and engage sales folks only in review of the last ones being considered
New young people, new vertical markets and now much concern and consideration on the environmental area of LEED, Leadership in Energy & environmental design
Many companies had gone global for parts and product solutions to offer more with increased margins with little to no environmental information
On top of all this was the move to new vertical markets such as Education and healthcare with new applications, products, and leaders in environmental/sustainability
Now after many years of no concerns, sustainability runs the market with continued growth in interest and knowledge
LEED is for architects and environmental buildings
Level in the same but only for furniture product
Air quality testing is leading as well
Several newer environmental rating systems continue to be intorduced
After the many years with no concerns, now sustainability is leading for both the building and interiors while
Daylight and views of the interiors has increased productivity and communication
Where adjustable/stand up products has become significate with this work group and design team while
Interactive, collaborative and flexible space continues to grow in demand with this younger working environment
The days of only office and conference rooms with desk and chairs has disappeared
Flexible solutions with product made well is very current and growing in interest
The sustainability areas of focus are:
Level certification for furniture products
Air testing for all possible chemical emissions
A detailed document for each product capturing all this
And now continue to see new introductions such as:
HHI - Healthy Hospitals Initiatives
HPD – Health product declaration
LCA – Life cycle Assessments
WELL building standards for healthy interiors
Online is where they always start and simple and complete availability is key
Ease is KEY
Unlike the past products are used in many applications and markets and sharing these ideas is very important
