Energy and Environmental Design).
2. To determine ecological impact of your college
infrastructure using guiding principles of LEED.
3. To learn about biophilic designs in architecture using
contemporary literature.

2. Theory
• LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely
used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all
building types, LEED provides a framework for healthy, efficient, and cost-
saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol
of sustainability achievement and leadership. It was introduced in 2000.
• LEED is a voluntary standards and certification program, was developed to
promote leadership in the building industry by providing an objective,
verifiable definition pf green.
• LEED has evolved to address new markets and building types, advances in
practice and technology, and greater understanding of the environmental
and human health effects of the built environment. Continuous
improvement cycles empower USGBC’s community to continue build on
lessons learned and evolve to meet new opportunities and challenges.
3. • LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by
recognizing performance in five key areas of human and
environmental health.

4. • To achieve LEED certification, a project earns points by
adhering to prerequisites and credits that address carbon,
energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, health and
indoor environmental quality. Projects go through a
verification and review process by GBCI and are awarded
points that correspond to a level of LEED certification:
Certified (40-49 points), Silver (50-59 points), Gold (60-79
points) and Platinum (80+ points).

6. Procedure
1. Download and read about LEED guidelines.(1)
2. Write about the guidelines in your practical file.
3. Make a tour of your college campus and note three architectural
design that aligns with the LEED guidelines.
4. Take their pictures and paste in your practical file.
5. Explain these designs’ features in a tabular manner and write about
their ecological impacts.
6. Learn about biophilic designs from recent literature.(2)
7. Write your observations and discuss them.
