4. From its green valleys spread with vineyards
to its old churches and watchtowers perched
in fantastic mountain scenery, Georgia
(Saqartvelo, საქართველო) is one of the
most beautiful countries on earth and a
marvellous canvas for walkers, horse riders,
cyclists, skiers, rafters and travellers of every
kind. Equally special are its proud, high-
spirited, cultured people: Georgia claims to
be the birthplace of wine, and this is a place
where guests are considered blessings and
hospitality is the very stuff of life.
5. Svaneti
Beautiful, wild and
mysterious, Svaneti is an
ancient land locked in the
Caucasus, so remote that it
was never tamed by any
ruler. Svaneti’s emblem is
the koshki (defensive stone
tower), most originally built
between the 9th and 13th
centuries, survive here
today.
6. Kakheti
The eastern region of Kakheti
(კახეთი) is Georgia’s premier
wine-producing area. Almost
everywhere you go, you’ll be
invited to drink a glass of
wine. Kakheti is also rich in
history: here you’ll find the
incredible monastery
complex of Davit Gareja, the
picturesque hilltop town
of Sighnagi, and many
beautiful churches, castles
and mansions around the
main town, Telavi.
7. On the border with
Azerbaijan, the ancient
monastery complex of
Davit Gareja (or Gareji) is
one of the most remarkable
of Georgia’s historic sites.
Its uniqueness is
heightened by a lunar,
semidesert landscape that
turns green and blooms
with flowers in early
summer. Davit Gareja
comprises about 15
monasteries spread over a
remote area , but visitors
usually just see two –
Lavra.
8. It’s difficult to make choice between it’s
historical sights to visit.
The remarkable cave city of
Vardzia is a cultural
symbol with a special place
in Georgian hearts. Its
inhabitants lived in rock-
hewn dwellings ranging
over 13 floors. Altogether
there are over 400 rooms,
13 churches and 25 wine
cellars, and more are still
being discovered.It is a
working monastery
inhabited with monks.
9. Uplistsikhe in Kartli Region
Located in Eastern Georgia,
Uplistsikhe (literally “Lord’s
Fortress“) is an abandoned
rock-hewn town, which
once have played an
important role in Georgian
history. The place was
founded in the late Bronze
Age, around 1000 BC, and
continued to be inhabited
until 13th century AD.
10. Katskhi's Sveti - an early medieval hermitage, dating
from the 9th or 10th century,in western Georgia.
11. Built in the 13th century, Rabati castle developed under the
influence of different cultures over subsequent centuries and this
is reflected in its architecture. Within the 7 hectares castle
complex there is a Church, a Mosque, a Minaret and a Synagogue.
12. The famous temple's name comes from its founder and builder, King
Bagrat III, the first king of a united Georgia. Although it has been
destroyed several times, this monument of high historical and artistic
value occupies a leading role in medieval Georgian art, a fact recognized
by UNESCO when it was given World Heritage Site status.
13. Sataplia State Reserve is a most multifarious and very rare
monument. It is of complex character and contains geologic,
paleontological, speleological and botanical monuments.
