Why is PDHPE important for our
children in schools??
PDHPE is one of the 6 Key learning areas in the NSW curriculum. It is incredibly
important to encourage our children to live safe, physical and healthy lifestyles.
PDHPE is very broad and covers many aspects of day to day life as well as allowing
young people to develop and nurture skills they will need throughout life.
Decision making
 It is imperative to teach children the importance of physical activity
and how a lack of physical activity and unhealthy choices can
affect their lives.
 Australian children are spending less time outside
playing than ever
“94% of children aged 6-15 playing games regularly. 95% of Australian homes
have at least one device used for playing games.” (SMH)
o Allowing children to understand their bodies is vital in providing
them the tools to know what should and should not be in their body.
o Understanding the needs of the human body can allow children to
acknowledge what their body needs to be able to function
optimally.
o PDHPE encourages students to make effective and healthy long
term lifestyle choices.
o PDHPE students are provided with the skills in carrying out and
recognising fundamental safe practices.
o These are not temporary or age specific skills but are broad and are life
long skills.
o Recognising and acknowledging risk factors and being able to safely
complete tasks. Focus areas include road safety, swimming and water
awareness, stranger danger and cyber awareness.
o Self-awareness and identity is an element that is
taught for students to be able to understand and
respect themselves and each other.
o Understanding where a student comes from and all
the elements that make them who they are is
embraced, which promotes confidence, greater
sense of well-being and allows them to effectively
communicate and associate with peers and adults
alike.
• Most importantly students are encouraged
to have fun, and in having fun they often
learn and retain more willingly.
• Having fun promotes happiness which in
turn can promote a healthy and active
lifestyle!
