Apollo 13 is about three astronauts who go up into space. The main astronauts name is jim and he
has a partner/best friend going up with him but he gets sick and they he does not get to go to outer
space.Then when the call to go to outer space and they do but when they are in space the gas fails
and they are stranded and they can't go to the moon or earth. Apollo 13 focuses around three
characters Jim, Ken and Jack and Fred. Fred is a pilot in the space module. Jim lovell is a cool calm
guy in crisis. He is always calm and always is aware of his actions. He is also the leader of the

Minutes after the explosion, the three astronauts abandoned the main ship for the Lunar Module.
The Lunar Module acted as a lifeboat for the crew (Redmond 18). Swigert tells Earth that it looks

Why Is Apollo 13 Wrong
Apollo 13 was first scheduled for March 1970 but eventually was shifted for April that year. Some
spectators believe it was because one of the oxygen tank in the service module encountering a
problem during testing, and it should not have been ignored. Only the third intended mission to the
moon and it wouldn't quite make it. On April 13, 1970 two days after Apollo 13 lifted off something
went wrong. The three men, Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise trained as any other astronaut
would, but what happened was unpredictable. The three men had just finished a broadcast to the

a small triangular window to look out onto the ship. When one of the astronauts finally saw a large

Every tank gets pre flight testing but when this particular tank was tested it seemed to show it had a
damaged fill line. Meaning it would not empty the contents as desired. When the tank was getting
pre flight tests the tanks were emptied by forcing oxygen gas into the tank and the liquid oxygen
was forced out, but while in space the tanks did not need to be emptied. Heaters were located in the
tank in order to heat the inside of it to keep the oxygen flowing and this would only be used for
short periods of time. The plan was to use these heaters to essentially "boil off" any excess oxygen,
this would then need 8 hour of 65 volt DC power. The thermostatically controlled switches on the
heater were only made for 28 volt DC power so this led people to believe they were damaged from
that mistake. This would then cause the switches to weld shut meaning the temperature would rise
over 1000 degrees F inside the tank.

Because of the explosion, the parts weren't used as had been planned. The Service Module (SM) was
supposed to provide the crew with oxygen, water and power before the mission. When the oxygen
exploded, it led to the loss of some of those necessities and the Service Module was nonfunctional.
The Command Module (CM) also provided the crew with power and oxygen. It was also prepared
with couches and served as a control center. When the explosion took place, they had to shut off the
Command Module to allow enough power for reentry. The Lunar Module (LM) was supposed to
provide the crew with living quarters when landed on the moon. However, on
this mission, the crew could not land on the moon. The Lunar Module then acted as a "lifeboat." It

Sometimes been a leader you must make tough decisions, even when those decisions mean that you
may not achieve the goal that you set out achieving. The Apollo crew all wanted to go to the moon

1.I'd first have to say that the head of mission control on the ground was definitely important in the
salvaging of Apollo 13. He was faced with problem after problem yet he kept a somewhat level head
through all of it and managed the engineers and other people involved back at Houston very well.
Jim Lovell's piloting skills played a rold in the crew's survival as well. When he had to set the ship's
course for Earth manually it took a great deal of skill and patience and he deserves credit for that.

As for the astronauts, I think their attitude towards the space program was positive. They obviously
were enthused about their mission to the moon, but I think they were beginning to believe these
missions were becoming routine as well. I gathered this from their horseplay and wisecracks in

requires much of my time and energy though, and I often feel that it takes away from my family and

However, at 55hrs, 54mins and 53secs when the crew was 200,000 miles from Earth and closing in
on the moon, mission controller Sy Liebergot saw a low–pressure warning signal on a hydrogen

Apollo 13 mission which goes back to 1970.
The mission was supposed to highlight the third moon landing, however, the novelty of moon
landing among the general public seemed to have already worn off, none of TV networks in the
United States broadcast the live transmission from the Apollo 13 crew members, only a handful of
family members and NASA's flight controllers actually watched it.
However, what seemed to have been a plain–sailing mission was about to take a sudden turn for the
worse.

In order to conserve as much energy as possible, they had to turn off whatever energy–consuming
equipment―the guidance system, the heater, whatever possible―reducing its energy consumption
down to only 12 ampere an hour.

They even used the cover off of one of the procedure manuals and a sock. This shows extreme
innovation in my opinion. This ability to be so innovative, I think also leads to arrogance. When
Gene Kranz announced to everyone that failure is not an option, he displayed arrogance. He wanted
people to realize that they were going to succeed by any means possible. Arrogance was also
displayed by the pilots throughout the movie. Tom Hanks (Jim Lovell) for example didn't seem all
that amused when Neil Armstrong was taking his first steps on the moon, almost to a sense that he

level within their teams. When Ken Mattingly was told that he was going to have to stay behind, Jim

original team knew the tone of each other's voices, displaying an extreme level of comfort with one
another. This comfort level within their teams also was displayed nonverbally when the two teams
interacted with each other. When one team was walking out of the training shuttle and the other was
walking in, I got a sense of the first team acting like they were better than the backups. This was

reported the problem of broken down oxygen tanks to the Houston Control Center, less than two
days after its takeoff on April 11th. Those at the Control Center in Houston were unsure what had
happened to the spacecraft, but knew that some sort of explosion had occurred. This so–called

As if this was not bad enough, there was more disparaging news: a cloud of some sort was floating
above the spacecraft, leading to the assumption that an oxygen tank exploded.
Kranz's first correct move was assuring the crew that everything would turn out alright and to keep
their cool. If anyone started completely panicking, it would not help the mission be successful. After
comforting everyone, he immediately moved to the second task: how to get the astronauts home
safely. He also avoided error and speculation through self–discipline and thoroughness.
At this point, there was enough oxygen in the second system to get the astronauts home safely, but
Lovell, one of the astronauts, noticed that the psi (pounds per square inch) level on the pressure
gauge for the second system was falling as well. It should normally register at 860, now it was only
a 300, only 53 minutes after the initial explosion. At this pace, the spacecraft would expend all of its
oxygen and electricity between midnight and 3 AM. This was not giving the Control Center a lot of
time.
Kranz made a phone call to his previous mentor, Chris Kraft, who was the previous flight director,
and current deputy director of the Manned Spacecraft Center. After Kraft arrived at the Control

Apollo 13 directed by Ron Howard is a movie based on a true story following the events of the
"successful failure" of NASA's third lunar landing mission in 1970. Apollo 13 follows three
astronauts on their mission to the moon where a faulty in the equipment trigger an explosion in the
oxygen tank, they find themselves struggling for survival with the limited fuel and resources. Quite
like the story, The Martian directed by Ridley Scott focuses on the protagonist, Mark Watney,
survival on Mars set in the year 2035. During an evacuation from Mars, he was impaled by a loose

survival on Mars with limited resources, where he has to try and survive until NASA sends their

Though the carbon dioxide problem is solved, the crew is still faced with other problems. Since the
crew has been working non–stop for the last 5 days and they have not slept. There is also no power
in Aquarius, which is causing the cab to be extremely cold due to lack of heat. The conditions are
miserable and the crew is becoming to be less hopeful of a return to earth. However, Lovell keeps

man on the moon, and the exploration did not stop there. Apollo 13 tells the story of three astronauts
that were supposed to go to the moon. On the journey there, part of the ship exploded, causing the
fuel levels to plummet. Now unable to complete the mission, the crew struggled their own

As editors of the movie, Mike Hill and Daniel Hanley were persistently tested in finding ways to
remain as true as possible to the historical event. One way that they did this was through keeping
some of the scenes consistent to the real timing of the events. In one scene, NASA's command
center in Houston, TX lost communication with the spacecraft for some time. As a crucial issue
within this account, Hill and Hanley wanted to keep this same timing in the movie, so they "wanted
to try to keep the running time in the film pretty close to the time on the clock and not have radio
silence lasting for nine minutes or something" (Apollo 13). Since long periods of silence is not
always the best way to keep an audience's attention, the editors had to find ways to keep the
audience engaged while still staying true to the real event, "The whole sequence benefits from some
great camera movement and crane shots which, combined with James Horner's score and sound

The astronauts onboard had to figure out an intelligent and safe way to make it back to the ground in
one piece. While on their way down to Earth, the three men were ambushed by tons of obstacles and
problems that were caused due to the explosion. The LEM didn't have enough water or power to last

A few days later Lovell and his crew take off on the Apollo 13 mission. At first all is well until the
second oxygen tank explodes, causing many problems for the crew; the most potent problem being
that the crew was losing oxygen fast. Luckily, due to much ingenuity by the crew and mission
control, the crew is able to arrive safely to earth without the deaths of any astronauts. Although
flawed in the technical events, there are many realities that the movie Apollo 13, successfully
presents. One of these realities being the representation of supporting details. An example of this is
seen when the creators of the movie had Lovell's wife fearing that her husband might die on the
Apollo mission. This fear was something real that Lovell's wife in actuality experienced, in which
the creators portray quite accurately by showing the nightmare she had of her husband's death.
Another example of an accurate supporting detail was how the creators were able to describe
Mattingly's inability to fly on Apollo 13 due to his exposure to German measles. The movie Apollo
13, Is also quite precise when it comes to presenting the dates and places of important events
revolving around the Apollo 13 mission. This is shown when the creators precisely show an accurate
date and place of launch which was at Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970. Another important

The movie that I have selected is Apollo 13 directed by Ron Howard. The movie was filmed in 1995

As they were going around the moon and losing contact with earth to get on the path of returning
back home, they fall into a dark side. Sciences has proven that there is no actual "dark side". The
other side of the moon that no longer faces the earth gets the same amount of sunlight, than the side
