The Anunciation And Expulsion From Paradise Summary
Giovani di Paolo's "The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise" is currently in the National
Gallery of Art in Washington DC. According to the panel next to the artwork, the piece was finished
in 1435 CE and made of tempera on panel. This Sienese altarpiece from the start of the Italian
Renaissance shows the experimentation of form at that time. Giovanni di Paolo uses golden texture
to display divinity, line to illustrate architectural perspective, and a strategic use of scale throughout
the composition in order to portray the importance of the religious context. The golden foil that
compliments tempera works at the time draws your eye to specific points in the piece. Drawing your
eye to the upper left corner, the golden material then aids the eye in traveling down towards the
bottom right corner. Because the largest golden form is in the upper right corner, your sight starts
there. This is where god is represented and the symbol for divinity starts. Divinity implied by golden
nimbuses or halos continue throughout the piece around the head of divine figures. The only two
figures on the left without nimbuses represent Adam and Eve who are no longer divine one kicked
out of paradise. This relates to the second part of the title, 'Expulsion from Paradise.' For obvious
cultural reasons, the angels have the heavenly halos. One angel is specifically known, Archangel
Gabriel, because of the annunciation scene with Mary in the center. Joseph, at the right, and Mary

The, Matthew, And The Quran
Our Interpretation is Our Reality When an author begins to write a book they usually have a certain
purpose in mind. They might want to convey a message or simply entertain their reader. In the three
Abrahamic texts that we read; Genesis, Matthew, and the Quran, some would argue that the author 's
purpose was to create a blueprint for how humans should live their lives; a rather daunting and
consequential task. The main problem is written text, and especially text that was written in 1,400
BC, and based off of ideals and traditions that date back even further, in the Bibles case, is it's going
to seem outdated and may often be misread or misrepresented. A simple sentence even in modern
times can be twisted and bent to mean just about anything. Ask our politicians. Now think about
what could happen to the meaning and form of ancient text after being rewritten and translated so
numerous times. Human interpretation is key to understanding how misrepresentation has occurred
in these texts. Every person ever to be born into this world is completely different. That means their
thoughts, their values, their morals, and just about everything having to do with them is unique. This
being said, it is no wonder that when two people from opposite sides of the world read an
ambiguous text, of which, it's sole purpose is to govern how we live our lives, there might be some
disagreement. This is why context is so important. If the reader happened to be, say, a Russian
person living in a

The first work is the center panel of the Merode Altarpiece by Robert Campin in 1425. It is titled
The Annunciation and is a Flemish painting. The second work is a fresco by Fra Angelico entitled
Annunciation. It was made in 1440 in Florence, Italy. The Merode Altarpiece is considered early
fifteenth century Flemish art while Annunciation is considered Early Renaissance art. The subject of
both of these paintings is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This work would have been located in a private Flemish home for private worship but it now
located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Annunciation is significant to history
because it demonstrated the shift of public worship at a church to private worship in the home. This
shift would eventually lead to the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century.
Annunciation, the fresco, clearly demonstrates the focus on religion in the 15th century. The fresco
is part of numerous frescos that were commissioned by the abbot of the Dominican monastery of
San Marco. The purpose of the fresco was to give religious reminders and instill piety into the
monks who were dedicating their lives to prayer. There is even an inscription at the bottom of the
work that reminds the monks to say a Hail Mary when they pass the work. Fra Angelico was greatly
influenced by two Gothic artists Gentile da Fabriano and Masaccio. The influence of Fabriano is
evident in the drapery and detail of Gabriel's wings which give a decorative style to the fresco. The
influence of Masaccio can be seen in the use of realistic depth. The work also uses linear
perspective which can be seen in the line between garden and the architecture. However, the lighting
and the proportions of the figures within the architecture are irrational. It could be said that these
artistic 'mistakes' were

Mass Media And Culture Essay
It is interesting that Raymond Williams creates a division between high class culture and lower class
culture, suggesting that culture is ordinary, shared and common. If this is the case why does he
emphasise a division in light of this concept? And if we all share a common culture can there be a
division?
It is difficult to understand the term culture. What is culture? Is it a utopian dream, is it a shared
group of interests that bring a community together, or is it just simply a way of life? There are so
many questions surrounding culture and its meaning. Raymond Williams described culture as "maps
of meaning through which the world is made intelligible", whether we agree with this definition or
not, he was right in saying that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But before I discuss Internet culture it is imperative that I decipher the essence of mass culture and
mass media. To understand the term "mass", it is important to study Gustave Lebon. Although there
have been many more recent theorists that have discussed the term "mass"; including Karl Max,
John Stuart Mills and Mathew Arnold, Lebon's theories on "mass" have pervaded disputes on the
subject ever since. A quote specifically that is questioned today is his warning that "the age we are
about to enter will in truth be the era of crowds" ([1895] 1916, p. 3), at a time when working class
parties were more present and when western societies were dealing with the growth of
industrialisation and mass migration to popular cities. His book "La psychologie des foules" was
cited for its treatise to crowds, however is much more about the advent of mass society in
physiological terms. He discusses "contagion, loss of individuality, and regression to a more
primitive mental state were his favourite terms". The reason for the book being described as a
treatise for the mass is his connotation of crowd behaviour within a larger mass. For example Lebon
quotes, "thousands of isolated individuals may acquire at certain moments, and under the influence
of certain violent emotions – such, for example, as a great national event – the characteristics of a
psychological crowd". However, the mere coming together of a crowd is not sufficient enough to
cause the disappearance of the conscious

Music Review : A Critique Of A Concert Review
For my first concert review, I attended the Music at the Marley event at the St. Petersburg Museum
of Fine Arts. The event featured the University of Tampa Faculty Ensemble with Barbara Prescott
on flute, Meg Cassell on oboe, Theodore Decoroso on clarinet, and Grigorios Zamparas on piano.
They played a selection of pieces from the Classical period to the twentieth century which were
performed in the following order: Franz Danzi: Sinfonia Concertante Op. 41 Allegro Moderato;
William Grant Still: Miniatures for flute, oboe, and piano; Malcolm Arnold: Divertimento for flute,
oboe, and clarinet; Gabriel Faure: Dolly Suite Op. 56 for flute, clarinet, and piano; Jacques Ibert:
Deux Interludes for flute, oboe, and piano; Madeleine Dring: Trio for flute, oboe, and piano: and
Camille Saint–Saens: Caprice on Danish and Russian Airs Op. 79.
Sir Malcom Arnold was born in Northampton, England on October 21, 1921. He began his career as
a professional musician with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1941 as a second trumpet.
Eventually, he became Principal Trumpet and thereafter commenced his transition into a composer.
In his compositional career, he composed about 50 different works including symphonies, ballets,
and operas among others. In addition, he wrote over 100 film scores, including Inn of the Sixth

Personal Narrative-It's Time To Purchase A New Car
After many long hours of planning, researching, contemplating, and pleading, I had finally talked
my dad into helping me buy a new car. However, it was not just any car. My dad had found me a
zippy, shimmering gold color, 2006 convertible Volvo. It was beautiful! The tan leather was in
pristine condition. The exterior had no scratches, dents, or marks of any kind. The gold color
glistened in the sunlight as if each speck of glitter was a flame. The cream colored carpet was
spotless. The speedometer read all the way up to 180 miles per hour. Then there was the magical
moment of pushing the "Open Top" button. It sent thrilling chills down my spine as the top
automatically started to fold down and tuck itself away, leaving nothing but ... Show more content

Each gear had its own purpose, its own speed, its own characteristics, and I had no idea what they
were. My thoughts were fixated on the fact that I was going to get a new convertible, not the fact
that I had no idea how to drive it. I had been surrounded by manual transmissions for my entire life,
but learning how to drive one was just something I had never quite mastered. Every time someone
had tired to teach me, all that seemed to follow was nervous laughter, anxiety on overdrive, "killing"
the car many times, and then usually ending up with me pulling over and letting my mom, dad,
boyfriend, etc. finish the trip. You would think that with all of my humiliating memories with stick
shifts that I would immediately run away in terror from anything with a clutch. Well, for once in my
life I was not going to shy away from shifting. I was going to prove to all those doubters that I could
drive any car I wanted to, wherever I wanted to, and that the fact that it was an automatic or
standard did not matter to me. The memories of terror and uneasiness were quickly thrown out of
my mind as I signed on the dotted line. This car was mine, whether I knew how to drive it or

Salman Rushdie Research Paper
The fact that a malfunction in using the freedom of speech would lead to one's death sentence –
what's more, ten years of cliffhanger of unknown from the threat of death and several others
innocent murders – is certainly horrifying. The well–known British novel writer Salman Rushdie
have taken a seemingly permanent and actual relief from the fatwa called by Ayatollah Ruhollah
Khomeini because of his novel The Satanic Verses, which was treated as a blasphemous work
against Islam. After years of hiding and under British's police protection, Rushdie finally got out
from shade and traveled around and give speeches. And at the same time, an item, a pin saying "I
am Salman Rushdie" came out to the world, and luckily because of Rushdie's professorship

Analysis Of The Book ' Cristobal Colon '
Cristobal Colon who is formerly known as Christopher Columbus was another person that David
Ponder encountered on his journey. Christopher Columbus gave David a very important decision for
success. This decision no longer made David have an undecided heart because David knew that if he
did, he would always fail in life. Thus, the fourth decision for success that was given to David was
"I have a decided heat." When a person like David started "to wait, to wonder, to doubt, to be
indecisive, [they were disobeying] God" (Andrews). When David opted to have a decided heart, he
chose to quit and defeat double mindedness. When people commit themselves to have a decided

Sometimes in life people try to dehumanize and humiliate others. This causes the humiliated and
dehumanized person to find it hard to forgive others. David found himself struggling with this
concept when he met Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln gave David excellent advice, which lead
David to the sixth decision for success "I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit." Through this
decision David learned that he must forgive others with grace and mercy. Moreover, that he could
not move on with his life unless he learned to forgive all things. Not only did David learn to forgive
others in this decision for determining personal success, but he also learned to forgive his own self.
When people forgives something, they are doing it for themselves and not for others. Thus, when
David decided to forgive his own self and others, he overcame his feelings of animosity, resentment,
and vengeance. In doing so, the reader could gradually see David becoming a better and more
successful person. In this decision David also choose not to be a slave anymore because he has the
power to speak what he believes. He no longer had to "live his life according to other people"
(Andrews). David learned that he could not be successful unless he started to forgive.
Before David's long journey ended with people from the past, he met Angel Gabriel who gave him
the final decision for success. Angel Gabriel allowed David to look into the future to see what he

Louis Riel 's Last Words Before His Execution
"I have nothing but my heart, I have given it long ago to my country." These are Louis Riel's last
words before his execution. Two themes that have been debated is whether Louis Riel is a traitor or
hero to the Métis. There have been many controversial figures throughout Canada's history, but
Louis Riel is one of the most controversial figure. His perspective on how he dealt with manner is
still debated today. A key aspect discussed today is why Riel is a hero to his people; the Métis. Louis
Riel had once recognized the turmoil the Métis had to face, through this Riel proved that one must
take actions in order to achieve a person's right. Firstly, Louis Riel is a savior due to his actions to

Moreover, the government's insufficiency caused Riel to act accordingly. Earlier, it was mentioned
that the Canadian government was not authorized to take legal action until December of 1869.
Though this was clearly recognized by the government, they sent surveyors in June of 1869 for
settlers to live there. The government broke their own laws, hence it proves that Riel, due to the
government's flawed intentions, had to enforce his rule, by stepping on the chains. Unit Two: The
Development of Western Canada, on page 36 highlights that in 1882, surveyors came to the Métis
peoples North–West Settlements to examine the land once more. The Métis acted quickly and sent
15 petitions to the Canadian government for the rights of their land, none of which were answered.
Once again, the government was incapable. The government could have prevented all the troubles,
but due to their insufficiency and flawed system, they let the surveyors come onto the land. In
addition to this, the government had signed many treaties with the Métis. But, the government, yet
again, didn't keep their word and didn't follow the laws of giving them what the treaties had
promised. To conclude, Riel was compelled to take arms. The lack of control, caused the
government to spend millions and ended in destruction. Flashback Canada on page 196 stated,
"Some new evidence suggests that the Chief Justice in Manitoba at the time of Riel's

Slave Rebellions, By Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser, And...
In the 18th century of colonial America, slavery was an enormous impact on the Southern economy
and continued to grow exponentially. It helped with a widespread growth of the southern,
agricultural economy. In doing so, slaves were recognized as property and treated as such: through
prejudice and misappropriation. Because of this practice of disrespect, tensions heightened and slave
began to voice their aggravation that freedom was a must. The most violent and bold movements
included slave rebellions. Slave rebellions, such as ones executed by Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser,
and Denmark Vesey, were effective in the nature of showing plantation owners and the United
States, in general, that the abolition for slavery was a necessity through the myriad of occurrences.
Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser, and Denmark Vesey were all very different in their own way, but
synonymous in the impact they produced in 18th and 19th century history.
Nat Turner was born on October 2nd, 1800 into a slave plantation in Southampton County, Virginia.
Unlike the vast majority of slave owners, his slave owner, Benjamin Turner, provided the young
Turner with a privileged lifestyle where he could receive an elementary education and play and
intermingle with the white children. His childhood was also centered around the bible and a
Christian way of life. His childhood was effected significantly when his father left his family to
venture to the North. A few years later, Benjamin Turner died, leaving him

Summary Of The Painting : Annunciation And Expulsion From...
On October 22, 2017, I had the opportunity to learn about the works of Renaissance art while
observing the painting The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise, at the National Gallery of
Art in Washington, D.C. completed by Giovanni Di Paolo in the fourteenth century A.D. The
painting is located in the West Building of the National Gallery, designed by American architect
John Russell Pope. We entered through the Madison Dr. entrance and walked through the Roman–
inspired columns of the rotunda, and proceeded to the left into the "barrel–vaulted sculpture hall"
(National Gallery of Art) and entered Gallery 3, where my painting rested. This West Building of the
National Gallery focuses on European artworks completed between the thirteenth through sixteenth
centuries. The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise was completed by Giovanni Di Paolo in
1435 A.D. This painting was smaller than I previously envisioned, as its dimensions are 40
centimeters by 46.4 centimeters. Compared to other paintings in the gallery, it was smaller in size,
as most of the paintings were over 100 centimeters in width. Other paintings in the gallery consisted
of other religious portraits that were much taller. With the frame, it is 54.93 centimeters by 58.74
centimeters and 6.99 centimeters in depth. The frame of the painting is wooden and gold, with little
dark blue crosses and red circle details, and engraved floral designs running along the middle. It also
displayed obvious signs of wear as

overall end goal of the trip to match how he believes the best way to tell it. These changes are
emphasized in the overall journey that is taken, the tests that are given, and after the seventh heaven
is reached what happens after. Each story has the same result that their main protagonist is trying to
reach God, but one of the biggest differences throughout Bistami's story is that Gabriel is not there
to help his main character through the ascension to God. In Ibn Abbas' story Mohammad taken by
Gabriel throughout the seven heavens and really only has one test at the beginning of the story. Also
Mohammads end result is he is given new laws to bring down to his people and in Bistami's the

Essay about Salman Rushdie’s Idea of Women in The Satanic...
In Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses Rushdie tells a story about two men, Saladin
Chamcha and Gibreel Farishta, oddly connected by the fact that they both survive the hijacking of
their aircraft. Throughout the novel, Gibreel has powerful dreams in which the narrator brings up the
topic of the Satanic Verses. The Satanic Verses were supposedly verses that Muhammad said were
part of the Quran and then were later revoked. The Verses allegedly said that Allah was not the only
god and that there were three slightly lesser female deities. It is believed that the Satanic Verses
were removed from the Quran because they accepted females as divine. In The Satanic Verses
women are portrayed as evil or tainted because they stray men from ... Show more content on

During the course of the novel, Rushdie uses the narrator, whom we assume to be Satan himself, to
illustrate to the reader why women are more inclined to not follow the strict rules of Islam, and
instead stray towards to devil because of better quality of life promised with the devil as opposed to
the demeaning and shameful life they lead in the religion of Islam. In the "Mahound" chapter of The
Satanic Verses, the narrator tells the story of Ibrahim and his wife and son, Hagar and Ismail. He
took them to a "waterless wilderness" (96) where he abandoned them, but before he left Hagar asked
him "Can this be God's will?" (96), and Ibrahim replied that it was. The narrator says that men have
always used God as an excuse to mistreat women in their lives and then goes off on a tangent
thinking to himself "Small wonder, then, that women have turned to me" (96). This is where the
reader can make the inference that the narrator is Satan because women are turning to him and away
from God and religion. They feel as though they are treated better by the devil rather than God
because the men in Islamic societies always justify the horrible things they do to women by saying
it is indeed God's will. Later on in the book in the chapter "A City Visible but Unseen" Rushdie
again shows the favoritism of males over females. When Hind gives birth to her second daughter,
Anahita, she is so upset that she only has two girls that she refuses to have

Angels Are Creatures With Wings
Introduction: Angels are creatures created by Allah (swt) and they are in paradise (jannah). Angels
are creatures with wings that worship Allah (swt) only, AllaH (swt) said in the Qur'an: "Praise be to
Allah, the Originator of the Heavens and the Earth, the creator of angels having wings – two, three
and four." (Qur'an 35:1). It is not mentioned in the qur'an when the Angels were created nobody
knows and Angels were created centuries ago even before human Allah (swt) mentions this in the
Qur'an: Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt
Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood, whilst we do celebrate Thy
praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not." 2:30. 1st Paragraph:
Angels are creatures that have no choice of their own they only take commands by Allah (swt).
There are different type of angels with different type of tasks to accomplish some that only pray and
worship Allah(swt)"Those who are before him are not scornful of worshipping Him, nor do they tire
or get bored. They glorify Him night and Day: they do not halt." (Qur'an 21:19–20) and "They are
honoured servants, who do not precede Him in speech, and they act according to His command. He
knows what is ahead of them, and they do not intercede, except for those whom He approves."

Besides all the other growing issues from 1700–1800 in American History, there was one rising
above all. The enslavement of the African people. While there was much debate about freedom,
abolition, and all other things some African–Americans managed to find theirs. From 1775 to 1830
many African–Americans gained freedom by escaping to regions in which slavery wasn't practiced
or by purchasing it if granted while all at the same time the expansion of slavery greatly expanded in

Zechariah's The Riddle Of The Annunciation
With the initial exchange between Mary and the Angel resolved, this discussion now turns its
attention to the central point of the Annunciation passage, the announcement of Christ, and Mary's
confusion at this pronouncement. To truly understand that scriptural passage, it is necessary to
discuss the possible reasons for what has been called The Riddle of the Annunciation, that is, why a
girl who is betrothed to be married and, presumably, understands the origin of children, questions
how the Angel's announcement could pertain to her. The simplest explanation to this question is also
the least satisfying. This is that, for some reason, Mary is ignorant of the way children are
conceived. This does not seem to fit any reasonable reading of the ... Show more content on

He points out that the annunciation format itself generally requires an objecting question. This could
partially explain Zechariah's objection in the previous story in Luke which this is designed to
parallel. However, Landry goes on to note that such a clunky and unreasonable objection does not
seem to fit. Elsewhere, Luke does not hold himself so slavishly to formal patterns that he damages
the flow of his story. It seems that if Luke were slavishly following the formal pattern for an
annunciation, he would have picked an objection that would not be so confusing or even
indecipherable to his reader. In fact, Landry asserts with Schaberg that those who immediately jump
to Luke simply slavishly following the annunciation format "have given up too soon on the logic of
the story." This discussion agrees with that conclusion; the literary solution ignores Luke's actual
text and simply takes the easy solution to sidestep rather than address this question. A rejection of
the literary solution to the riddle is further supported elsewhere in Luke's own Gospel, and these will
be discussed later within the discussion of solutions that reject historicity of the virgin birth

The Myth Of An Angel
An angel is defined as a spiritual being believed to act as an attendant, agent, or messenger of God,
conventionally represented in human form with wings and a long robe. This definition explains what
many people believe an angel to be. When you hear the word angel, is this what you believe them to
be, too? On the other hand, Iblis is to be defined as a jinn who refused to bow to Adam. He is
believed to entice humans and jinn to commit evil through deception. Another name for Iblis would
be Satan. When you hear either of these names, is this what you believe this figure to be? Each of
these figures also has a connotation related to them in terms of good and evil. Being considered
"good" is defined as to be desired or approved of or that which is morally right. On the contrary,
being considered "evil" is defined as profoundly immoral and malevolent. By these definitions, I am
sure that you can already make an assumption on which force is evil and which is good. Throughout
Islam, each of these beings play a major role in the history and background of the religion, along
with the importance of each in terms of the part they play related to Allah. In relation to Allah,
angels have a role that is well known as "instruments of his will." In the Qur'an, angels are believed
to belong to the belief in the unseen, and that they "elude capture through paintings, sculptures, and
TV shows." Muslims have faith and belief not only in Allah, but also in His angels, his messengers,

The angel Gabriel then reveals to Mary his true purpose in his visit to her. "Don't be frightened,
Mary, for God has decided to bless you! You will become pregnant and have a son, and you are to
name him Jesus" (Luke 1:30–31). Gabriel then tells Mary that she will bear the Son of God and he
will reign over Israel forever. Gabriel's final words are, "For nothing is impossible with God" (Luke
1: 37). Despite the awesome, unexpected, unbelievable spectacle before her, Mary was able to
accept that she would have a baby despite being a virgin. "Mary responded, "I am the Lord's
servant, and I am willing to accept whatever he wants. May everything you have said come true"
(Luke 1:38). In her willing acceptance of God's plan the Annunciation is confirmed and the
Incarnation of Christ occurs. It was at this moment that, "The Word was made flesh," as the John's
Gospel puts it (John 1:14)" (Williamson 20). This painting of the Annunciation ', about 1430–40, is
an example of Christian Art depicting the Annunciation and subsequent Incarnation of Christ
described earlier. It was painted by an anonymous painter who went by the name of Master of

sections. The first half of the book expounds upon the history of the study of angels in the Western
hemisphere and then in England specifically. The second half of the book examines the titular
subject of John Milton's propositions on angels. The final chapter of the work, reiterates and
summarizes all nine previous chapters to reveal their larger purpose and significance within the
book itself and within Milton's entire career. Through the structure, West outlines that he "tried to

While each of the different traditions had very different beliefs on the details of angelology, such as
the exemplified Catholic and Protestant differences, each agreed upon the necessity of angelology,
which West reveals through the words of John Calvin. Beyond the question of the rank, West
expounds upon controversies about the nature, purpose, substance, ability, activity, and humanity of
angels throughout every age of history from the Greek and Roman empires to Milton's seventeenth–
century England to both contextualize the book's subject for readers and to illuminate the
significance and depth behind John Milton's own literary representation of angels.
In chapters six and seven, West introduces Milton's angelology and examines the choices he makes
throughout his literature to maintain a specific representation of the angels and other supernatural

The Defence Of Poesy By Sir Philip Sidney
Sir Philip Sidney argued for the positive value of imaginative literature in The Defence of Poesy, in
which he claimed that literature should 'teach and delight'. The influence of Sidney's claim can be
seen in John Skelton's work 'The Bowge of Courte' and Thomas Nashe's 'The Choise of Valentines'.
Skelton's 'The Bowge of Court', has been described as 'a fifteenth–century dream vision built on the
model of the morality play' and 'The Choise of Valentines' as 'an Ovidian erotic poem', which
elaborates 'a tale of impotence and erotic substitution.' While both poems are rich in their
differences, due to the satiric and erotic genres, they share the similarity of belonging to a very
specific time. By examining the origins d interpreting Sidney's presentation of the phrase 'teach and
delight', the ways in which Skelton and Nashe's texts maintain Sidney's claim can be discussed.
Skelton teaches through 'The Bowge of Court', by employing allegory as a way to critique the court,
and uses satire as a form of poetic council. Nashe teaches in 'The Choise of Valentines' by
presenting his text and an example of originality and satirising the idea of performance. Skelton
delights in his text by using the symbol of the ship as an ornament added to the truth of the poem.
Nashe delights in his text by the freshness of language used and the originality of his poetry.
Sidney uses the phrase 'teach and delight' consistently throughout The Defence of Poesy, which he
regards as the design of

Growing Up In The House On Mango Street By Sandra Cisneros
In the novel, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the theme of growing up is prevalent
throughout the book. Throughout the novel, a young mexican girl named Esperanza goes through
experiences as she matures that involve her friends, society, dangers that expose her to the outside
world and help her to realize what the real world is like.
The first time Esperanza makes an appearance in the book, she is younger and easily manipulated,
especially by her friends. Esperanza meets a girl named Cathy, a snobby girl that lived on Mango
Street. When Cathy tells Esperanza "Okay, I'll be your friend. But only until next Tuesday. That's
when we move away." Then as if she forgot I had just moved in, she says the neighborhood is
getting bad" (13) This was a racist statement towards Esperanza and her family, something she
doesn't quite understand yet because Esperanza thinks Cathy forgot they moved in, yet she was
actually being racist. This is the first time Esperanza is exposed to racism in the book, therefore
exposing her to the outside world. Later in the book, Esperanza meets Sally, a beautiful girl with
shiny black hair, that all she seemingly just wants is to love, and Esperanza wants to be just like her.
"I like your black coat and the shoes you wear, where did you get them? I want to buy shoes just
like yours." (82) Sally and Esperanza become friends, but later in the story, in the chapter Red
Clowns, Esperanza is put in a dangerous situation where Sally walks off

Analysis Of Fences By August Wilson
Fences is a short history written by the African–American author August Wilson in 1985, that
follows a tragic flow and explores significant social issues like racism, family conflicts, mental
illness and gender inequality that took place in the post– World War II era, and still affecting us
today. To support his ideas, the author takes us into the life of its characters in order to examine their
societal and self–imposed limitations; also, the effective use of symbols, setting and themes create a
broad perspective of this societal issues analyzing its origin, developing and culmination, in order to
let the readers make their own conclusions. To begin with, in this play the author unfolds family
conflicts that involve its characters into a series of events that affected their lives and pushed them
to unexpected ways. Is the year 1957 in the Industrial city of Pittsburg. Troy Maxon is fifty–three
years old. He has been married to Rose for 18 years, this devotion to him has led her to ignore the
more difficult aspects of his character. Furthermore, one of the literary elements used to spotlight
this issue is on its plot and dialogues between its characters. The plot explores the roots of Troy
Maxon, whose past emerge during the curse of the play, and shows a fourteen–year–old boy, who
grew up motherless and under the care of a brutal and abusive father. For this reason, he decided to

Analysis Of The Interesting Things About This Broadway...
– [Alex Brightman] One of the interesting things about this Broadway season is that the two most
nominated shows are Hamilton and Shuffle Along, which feature big and almost entirely non–white
casts. Additionally, there 's Eclipsed, the first Broadway production be written, directed, and
performed exclusively by black women, and The Color Purple, which centers around black
actresses. The list goes on. What can Hollywood, learn from Broadway because they are obviously
having their own struggling with diversity at the moment? – [Reed Birney] So much. I mean, clearly
[[00:00:30]] like what you just talked about in just the casting. But even beyond the diversity within
the casting and the storytelling, I think storytelling in general. I think Hollywood is in a major
drought right now, for actually capturing people 's hearts and attentions and minds. [Alex
Brightman] They 're sacrificing talent over whatever sells tickets. I just think talent transcends
anything else – talent and drive and merit. I mean, I grew up thinking that show business was a
meritocracy, and it is not,and especially in [[00:01:00]] Hollywood. I think that now, especially in
what people are calling the new golden age of theater, we 're doing it right. People, no matter what
they look like, have brought incredible stories to light. And people aren 't going, "Eh, it 's good, but
she 's this or he 's that." [Reed Birney] But Broadway has always done stuff before Hollywood. You

Sandro Botticelli's Annunciation
In Sandro Botticelli's The Annunciation, 1485, the biblical scene of the angel Gabriel greeting Mary
is shown. The angel tells Mary she is expecting a child that is the Son of God. Botticelli's uses space
in The Annunciation to separate Mary and the angel Gabriel as well as combine the space for a
completed scene. The scene takes place inside a church. Mary is on the right side in an private
chapel. She facing the left and bowing to show respect to God. The angel is on the left side bowing
toward the right. The angel is standing in an ambulatory with a column running right between the
figures. The painting is done in tempera and gold on wood. The painting is very flat and matte

Again, Mary is on the right side on the painting. Botticelli is using the biblical motif to foreshadow
Christ being born. Christ is the right hand of God, so even the annunciation of his coming must be
holy and divine. While there is no bible evidence, many believe the angel Gabriel sat at the left hand
of God. Rabbi David Cooper says the angel is "connected with the attribute of Gevorah on the left
side of the Tree of Life. Whereas Michael is on God's right hand, Gabriel is on God's left hand. The
left hand is the one that metes out punishment; the right hand overrules strict justice and is more
merciful and thus more lenient" (p. 45). Botticelli seems to agree with the theory of Gabriel sitting
at God's left hand by the placement on the angel. While the does have a column directly diving the
space, the gaps between the columns and the walk way into the chapel combines the two sections.
Botticelli seems to be inferring for the angel to walk into the chapel and see Mary. The figures are
also bowing toward one another. Not only are they bowing because they are in the house of God, but
they seem to acknowledge one another in their bowing. If one would draw a line of the figures line
of vision the lines would intersect at the walk way between the columns. Therefore while Mary and
Gabriel are in different rooms of the church they can see and are interacting with one

Book Of Gabriel Research Paper
Gabriel
Gabriel is an angel who serves as a messenger for God to certain people. He is one of the three
archangels. Gabriel is mentioned in both the Old and the New Testaments of the Bible. First, in the
Old Testament, Gabriel appears to the prophet Daniel to explain his visions. Gabriel is described as,
"one who looked like man," as he interprets Daniel's visions. He speaks to Daniel while he is
sleeping. After Gabriel's first visit, Daniel becomes tired and sick for days. Gabriel later visits
Daniel again providing him with more insight and understanding in an answered prayer.
In the New Testament, Gabriel, described as "an angel of the Lord," first appears to Zacharias, the
father of John the Baptist. He tells him, "Fear not, Zacharias: ... Show more content on

named Joseph. Gabriel said to Mary, "Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee:

told Mary she would conceive from The Holy Spirit and the baby will be the Son of God.
After the Annunciation of Mary, Gabriel is not spoken of again.
Gabriel's attributes are the Archangel, he is clothed in blue or white, and is seen carrying a lily, a
trumpet, a shining lantern, a branch from Paradise, a scroll or a scepter. In art, Gabriel is most

He is occasionally cited as the one who blows God's trumpet to indicate the Lord's return to Earth.
However, the person designated with this task varies; different passages cite different people. The
earliest known identification of Gabriel as the trumpet holder comes in 1455 represented in
Byzantine art.
Gabriel is recognized as the patron saint of messengers, telecommunication workers, and postal
workers. His feast day is celebrated on September 29, along with St. Michael and St.

Restorative Justice is a Theory Based on Repentance,...
Restorative Justice is a theory of justice that seeks to develop community–based responses to crime
and violence by using dialogue and peace building to heal victims and bolster social harmony. It
relies on the basic principles of repentance, reconciliation, and forgiveness. These principles, which
are central to Islam, help mediate primarily between the criminal justice systems and multi–religious
pluralistic societies.
Islam is based on two primary sources of law − the Quran and the Sunna. The Quran is restorative in
its essence and the Sunna too has restorative elements. A few instances of this can be observed from
the following verses in the Quran, which relate to human nature and society:
"If you stretch your hand against me, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The practices of compensation (diya), conciliation (sulh), pardon (afou), apology, community
service, service for the benefit of the victim, warning, fining, probation, and reintegration are all
forms of restorative mechanisms known today that have been embraced by Islamic law. Whatever
the category of implications, most jurists agree that the final objective of punishments in Islam is to
achieve a just society. Nonetheless, in the past quarter century, fundamentalist's have interpreted
Islam to justify implementing extreme penalties that often violate international human rights norms.
And punishments set out in the Quran that are potentially restorative, have become retributive in the
context of Afghanistan's warring societies. Islam has been portrayed in the media as a savage system
with incidents like the attempted murder of Malala Yousafzai and the hunting of writer Salman
Rushdie. The Quran in fact cautions against relying on retaliatory measures:
"We ordained therein for them life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth and
wounds for equal. Anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity; it is an act of atonement." (Al–
Maidah: 45)

form promotes islahi (reconciliation), forgiveness, and compassion; punishment is less important

The Anunciation And Expulsion From Paradise Analysis
Giovanni di Paolo's The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise is currently in the National
Gallery of Art in Washington DC, was finished in 1435 CE, and is made of tempera on panel. This
Sienese panel from the start of the Italian Renaissance is believed to be one of five from the lower
part of the altarpiece. Giovanni di Paolo uses golden texture to display divinity, line to illustrate
architectural perspective, and a strategic use of scale throughout the composition in order to portray
the importance of the religious context. His personal artistic stylization, the experimentation of the
Italian Renaissance but still firmly painting with Medieval Pictorial Tradition, and the use of
symbolism can also demonstrate the religious meaning of the piece. Furthermore, in the context of
Giovanni di Paolo's The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise, the conversation between
monetary and cultural value and the controversy of art being exhibited in its country of origin will
be discussed.
Giovanni di Paolo gained distinction in the Sienese School of painting in the Gothic style. Believed
to use a style book for reference while painting, Giovanni di Paolo was extremely influenced by
Trecento and Quattrocento Italian artists. He started by mimicking other artists like Gentile da
Fabriano, but developed his own experimentation with religious pieces later on in his life. Although
he copied the concepts in his earlier works, like the Raising of Lazarus by Duccio, his scenes were
more lively, vivid, and realistically represented. Later in his life, Giovanni became skilled in
painting illuminated manuscripts, which are recognized today because the early influences of the
Italian Renaissance are present in his depiction of naturalism, like his experimental linear
perspective in The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise. Like all artists in the early Italian
Renaissance, Giovanni only painted religious narratives correlating to the Catholic influences.
Uniformed biblical narratives that most could understand were sought after, so schools and
monasteries taught artists and those artists were later commissioned by Catholic churches. The lack
of other means for patronage lead to strict representation of religious art as

Illusions of Success For years now, many students have thought "How do I grow up too be
successful?" but the truth here is that the people asking this, don't know what success really means
to them. Accomplishment can be defined in a variety of ways, such as the amount of money a
person makes, how happy an individual is by themselves, or even achieving in the simple things in
life. You can, however, gain the characteristics needed to be successful in the future, for example,
patience, determination, and a straight mindset. Accidental effects can also come into play, for
instance dumb luck that can happen to anybody and the wealth gap between the person or the school
they attend. These are just three of the most important traits a scholar must have in order to get
somewhere in their future of education and in life down the path they may take.

Analysis Of ' The Catcher Of The Rye '
Two Worlds, Two Choices, Two Boys
In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield struggles to leave the real world
around him which he constantly fails to fit in. He is expelled from three schools before going to
Pencey. He then leaves Pencey for New York before Christmas. After experiencing the coldness of
society in New York, He decides to hitchhike to the West alone, escaping the society and leaving his
family behind. Instead, he chooses to dream about living in the fantasy world in his mind where all
things he resists do not exist. Among those things he resists in the real world, the phoniness of
adults, the unavoidable loss of children's innocence and his unbreakable bond with his family are
the most significant ones that schedule Holden's canceled departure.
Holden is unwilling to get along with phonies at his schools. When Holden explains the reason why
he leaves Elkton Hills School to Mr. Spencer, he gives an example: "For instance, they had this
headmaster, Mr. Haas, that was the phoniest bastard I ever met in my life" (Salinger 17). Holden
finally drops out of Elkton Hills because of the phoniness of his headmaster even though Holden has
no direct contact with him. However, Holden's abhorrence toward phonies is so great and evident
that he cannot even stand watching a phony's action from far away. Holden originally believes that
changing to another school will reduce his interaction with phonies, but his thought is proved wrong
at Pencey. After

Analysis Of Angels Displaying The Crown Of Thorns
There are several miniatures in particular that are meant to evoke piety, for Anne, as well as that
which she hoped her son would display, in time. Angels Displaying the Crown of Thorns (Fol. 30r)
depicts two angels reverently holding a golden crown of thorns, referencing that worn by Christ. In
Angels Displaying the Eucharist in a Monstrance (Fol. 11v), four angels carefully hold a
monstrance, a device by which the Host of communion could be displayed for worship and
respectful contemplation. These angels are in a similar setting and arrangement to those holding the
crown of thorns, and both images share the same main purpose, as well: to have two extra sections
of this prayer book inadvertently dedicated towards recalling the Passion of Christ. There are also
some other possible implied purposes, though. The inclusion of the crown of thorns in one folio
serves as a reminder of the fact that Anne had privileged access to Sainte–Chapelle, which she
undoubtedly took advantage of, built by Louis IX following his obtainment of the Crown of Thorns,
as a place in which to house it, along with other such articles. Her piety is thus re–emphasised
through yet another display of devotion for her son to follow. In a similar manner, the monstrance,
an object of great importance to the devout, would serve the same purpose. Yet, there is also the
sense that Anne is showcasing the opulent objects at her disposal, for the crown of thorns was
certainly not a replaceable, nor common,

This was accomplished in a seamless manner as this piece looks so natural. Foreshortening was used
in most the panels especially the idle one where the Virgin is laying in an almost upright slumber.
She appears to have a very long torso and legs, while the Saints beneath her appear to be shorter in
height and those sitting even have shortened legs. The bottom piece as she is sitting in the highchair
holding baby Jesus she again appears to be exaggerated with a longer upper body. The proportion in
relation to the whole piece is true to size except showing the Virgin to be larger than life almost in a
sense. All the Saints appear to be the same size in scale whereas the Virgin is longer in the legs and
upper body.

The Annunciation Explored through the Era of Italian...
The Annunciation is a Christian celebration of the iconic moment that the archangel Gabriel
announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother to the Son of God,
Jesus. The story of the Annunciation derives chiefly from the biblical Gospel of Luke, and has been
portrayed abundantly and variously in many visual art forms from the earliest centuries of
Christianity and Christian iconography. This essay will explore the depiction of the Annunciation
and symbolism in the period of the Italian Renaissance and pay particular attention towards the
development of the focus on spiritualism towards naturalism through the refined language of
expression and gesture from the 14th century to the late 15th century.

Fig. 1 captures the very moment that the archangel Gabriel comes down from the heavenly realm to
earth to announce to Mary that she will conceive the Christ–child and he shall be called Jesus. The
gold of his crown is representative of the "celestial realm that he has left to deliver this message"
(Kleiner, 2010:387). The announcement is depicted very much in the moment as the words are quite
literally illustrated with the text "Ava gratia plena Dominus tecum" (Van Dijk, 1999:420), which
leave his mouth from left to right as if they were encapsulated in a speech bubble. The phrase is in
fact inscribed in Latin and reads as "Hail, Mary, full of grace, blessed art thou among women" (Van
Dijk, 1999:420). The draping cloth around Gabriel's gold–infused light blue robe whips around the
angel as if he had just land and his wings, which are still erect, depict an effortless grace of divine
delicacy in the way that Martini executed them. Making use of undulating, long curved linear lines,
they are almost liquid–like in their fluidity. The angel is painted holding a branch of olive leaves in
his left hand. This is a symbol of the Christ–head and his coming to earth as the "Prince of Peace"
(Emmerson, 2006:456), and also makes a reference to the traditional biblical story of Noah, the ark
and the dove returning with an olive branch as a promise of the covenant of peace made by God
with man (Genesis 8:11, English Standard Version)

responsible for the poor taste of this mixture of decorative features borrowed from various

The story of the Annunciation is one that focuses on the centuries–long Islamic perspective of
judgement and expectation of others, especially women. Set during a period of time where the
sacred nature of a woman's purity was highly valued, the angel Gabriel's message to the Virgin
Mary was not one entirely void of danger and aprehension. An unwed mother would undoubtedly
be persecuted by her peers and this is the danger that Mary faced with the deliverance of the news.
Donatello's job was to not only create a skilled and beautiful piece of art but also to depict the
varying emotions of the scene in such a way as to convey to his audience the true story of the
Annunciation in all it's different aspects.
The placement of the figure of the Virgin is especially successful in displaying a sense of shock on
her part. Frightened by the appearance of the angel, she has delicately turned her body away from
him to the left while her right arm covers her left breast in surprise. He left arm hangs lower as she

The Anunciation And Expulsion From Paradise Summary

  • 1. The Anunciation And Expulsion From Paradise Summary Giovani di Paolo's "The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise" is currently in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. According to the panel next to the artwork, the piece was finished in 1435 CE and made of tempera on panel. This Sienese altarpiece from the start of the Italian Renaissance shows the experimentation of form at that time. Giovanni di Paolo uses golden texture to display divinity, line to illustrate architectural perspective, and a strategic use of scale throughout the composition in order to portray the importance of the religious context. The golden foil that compliments tempera works at the time draws your eye to specific points in the piece. Drawing your eye to the upper left corner, the golden material then aids the eye in traveling down towards the bottom right corner. Because the largest golden form is in the upper right corner, your sight starts there. This is where god is represented and the symbol for divinity starts. Divinity implied by golden nimbuses or halos continue throughout the piece around the head of divine figures. The only two figures on the left without nimbuses represent Adam and Eve who are no longer divine one kicked out of paradise. This relates to the second part of the title, 'Expulsion from Paradise.' For obvious cultural reasons, the angels have the heavenly halos. One angel is specifically known, Archangel Gabriel, because of the annunciation scene with Mary in the center. Joseph, at the right, and Mary both also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The, Matthew, And The Quran Our Interpretation is Our Reality When an author begins to write a book they usually have a certain purpose in mind. They might want to convey a message or simply entertain their reader. In the three Abrahamic texts that we read; Genesis, Matthew, and the Quran, some would argue that the author 's purpose was to create a blueprint for how humans should live their lives; a rather daunting and consequential task. The main problem is written text, and especially text that was written in 1,400 BC, and based off of ideals and traditions that date back even further, in the Bibles case, is it's going to seem outdated and may often be misread or misrepresented. A simple sentence even in modern times can be twisted and bent to mean just about anything. Ask our politicians. Now think about what could happen to the meaning and form of ancient text after being rewritten and translated so numerous times. Human interpretation is key to understanding how misrepresentation has occurred in these texts. Every person ever to be born into this world is completely different. That means their thoughts, their values, their morals, and just about everything having to do with them is unique. This being said, it is no wonder that when two people from opposite sides of the world read an ambiguous text, of which, it's sole purpose is to govern how we live our lives, there might be some disagreement. This is why context is so important. If the reader happened to be, say, a Russian person living in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Prompt: Select and fully identify two paintings from different art historical periods and cultures that depict the same subject or theme. Then discuss how the presentations are a reflection of the culture and style in which it was created. Can be found on pg. 560 in textbook can be found on pg. 600 in textbook The first work is the center panel of the Merode Altarpiece by Robert Campin in 1425. It is titled The Annunciation and is a Flemish painting. The second work is a fresco by Fra Angelico entitled Annunciation. It was made in 1440 in Florence, Italy. The Merode Altarpiece is considered early fifteenth century Flemish art while Annunciation is considered Early Renaissance art. The subject of both of these paintings is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This work would have been located in a private Flemish home for private worship but it now located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Annunciation is significant to history because it demonstrated the shift of public worship at a church to private worship in the home. This shift would eventually lead to the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Annunciation, the fresco, clearly demonstrates the focus on religion in the 15th century. The fresco is part of numerous frescos that were commissioned by the abbot of the Dominican monastery of San Marco. The purpose of the fresco was to give religious reminders and instill piety into the monks who were dedicating their lives to prayer. There is even an inscription at the bottom of the work that reminds the monks to say a Hail Mary when they pass the work. Fra Angelico was greatly influenced by two Gothic artists Gentile da Fabriano and Masaccio. The influence of Fabriano is evident in the drapery and detail of Gabriel's wings which give a decorative style to the fresco. The influence of Masaccio can be seen in the use of realistic depth. The work also uses linear perspective which can be seen in the line between garden and the architecture. However, the lighting and the proportions of the figures within the architecture are irrational. It could be said that these artistic 'mistakes' were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Mass Media And Culture Essay It is interesting that Raymond Williams creates a division between high class culture and lower class culture, suggesting that culture is ordinary, shared and common. If this is the case why does he emphasise a division in light of this concept? And if we all share a common culture can there be a division? It is difficult to understand the term culture. What is culture? Is it a utopian dream, is it a shared group of interests that bring a community together, or is it just simply a way of life? There are so many questions surrounding culture and its meaning. Raymond Williams described culture as "maps of meaning through which the world is made intelligible", whether we agree with this definition or not, he was right in saying that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But before I discuss Internet culture it is imperative that I decipher the essence of mass culture and mass media. To understand the term "mass", it is important to study Gustave Lebon. Although there have been many more recent theorists that have discussed the term "mass"; including Karl Max, John Stuart Mills and Mathew Arnold, Lebon's theories on "mass" have pervaded disputes on the subject ever since. A quote specifically that is questioned today is his warning that "the age we are about to enter will in truth be the era of crowds" ([1895] 1916, p. 3), at a time when working class parties were more present and when western societies were dealing with the growth of industrialisation and mass migration to popular cities. His book "La psychologie des foules" was cited for its treatise to crowds, however is much more about the advent of mass society in physiological terms. He discusses "contagion, loss of individuality, and regression to a more primitive mental state were his favourite terms". The reason for the book being described as a treatise for the mass is his connotation of crowd behaviour within a larger mass. For example Lebon quotes, "thousands of isolated individuals may acquire at certain moments, and under the influence of certain violent emotions – such, for example, as a great national event – the characteristics of a psychological crowd". However, the mere coming together of a crowd is not sufficient enough to cause the disappearance of the conscious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The event featured the University of Tampa Faculty Ensemble with Barbara Prescott on flute, Meg Cassell on oboe, Theodore Decoroso on clarinet, and Grigorios Zamparas on piano. They played a selection of pieces from the Classical period to the twentieth century which were performed in the following order: Franz Danzi: Sinfonia Concertante Op. 41 Allegro Moderato; William Grant Still: Miniatures for flute, oboe, and piano; Malcolm Arnold: Divertimento for flute, oboe, and clarinet; Gabriel Faure: Dolly Suite Op. 56 for flute, clarinet, and piano; Jacques Ibert: Deux Interludes for flute, oboe, and piano; Madeleine Dring: Trio for flute, oboe, and piano: and Camille Saint–Saens: Caprice on Danish and Russian Airs Op. 79. However, it was not just any car. My dad had found me a zippy, shimmering gold color, 2006 convertible Volvo. It was beautiful! The tan leather was in pristine condition. The exterior had no scratches, dents, or marks of any kind. The gold color glistened in the sunlight as if each speck of glitter was a flame. The cream colored carpet was spotless. I had been surrounded by manual transmissions for my entire life, but learning how to drive one was just something I had never quite mastered. Every time someone had tired to teach me, all that seemed to follow was nervous laughter, anxiety on overdrive, "killing" the car many times, and then usually ending up with me pulling over and letting my mom, dad, boyfriend, etc. finish the trip. You would think that with all of my humiliating memories with stick shifts that I would immediately run away in terror from anything with a clutch. Well, for once in my life I was not going to shy away from shifting. I was going to prove to all those doubters that I could drive any car I wanted to, wherever I wanted to, and that the fact that it was an automatic or standard did not matter to me. The memories of terror and uneasiness were quickly thrown out of my mind as I signed on the dotted line. This car was mine, whether I knew how to drive it or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Salman Rushdie Research Paper The fact that a malfunction in using the freedom of speech would lead to one's death sentence – what's more, ten years of cliffhanger of unknown from the threat of death and several others innocent murders – is certainly horrifying. The well–known British novel writer Salman Rushdie have taken a seemingly permanent and actual relief from the fatwa called by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini because of his novel The Satanic Verses, which was treated as a blasphemous work against Islam. After years of hiding and under British's police protection, Rushdie finally got out from shade and traveled around and give speeches. Christopher Columbus gave David a very important decision for success. This decision no longer made David have an undecided heart because David knew that if he did, he would always fail in life. Thus, the fourth decision for success that was given to David was "I have a decided heat." When a person like David started "to wait, to wonder, to doubt, to be indecisive, [they were disobeying] God" (Andrews). Abraham Lincoln gave David excellent advice, which lead David to the sixth decision for success "I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit." Through this decision David learned that he must forgive others with grace and mercy. Moreover, that he could not move on with his life unless he learned to forgive all things. Not only did David learn to forgive others in this decision for determining personal success, but he also learned to forgive his own self. When people forgives something, they are doing it for themselves and not for others. Thus, when David decided to forgive his own self and others, he overcame his feelings of animosity, resentment, and vengeance. In doing so, the reader could gradually see David becoming a better and more successful person. In this decision David also choose not to be a slave anymore because he has the power to speak what he believes. He no longer had to "live his life according to other people" (Andrews). David learned that he could not be successful unless he started to forgive. Before David's long journey ended with people from the past, he met Angel Gabriel who gave him the final decision for success. Angel Gabriel allowed David to look into the future to see what he ... Two themes that have been debated is whether Louis Riel is a traitor or hero to the Métis. There have been many controversial figures throughout Canada's history, but Louis Riel is one of the most controversial figure. His perspective on how he dealt with manner is still debated today. A key aspect discussed today is why Riel is a hero to his people; the Métis. Moreover, the government's insufficiency caused Riel to act accordingly. Earlier, it was mentioned that the Canadian government was not authorized to take legal action until December of 1869. Though this was clearly recognized by the government, they sent surveyors in June of 1869 for settlers to live there. The government broke their own laws, hence it proves that Riel, due to the government's flawed intentions, had to enforce his rule, by stepping on the chains. Unit Two: The Development of Western Canada, on page 36 highlights that in 1882, surveyors came to the Métis peoples North–West Settlements to examine the land once more. The Métis acted quickly and sent 15 petitions to the Canadian government for the rights of their land, none of which were answered. Once again, the government was incapable. The government could have prevented all the troubles, but due to their insufficiency and flawed system, they let the surveyors come onto the land. In addition to this, the government had signed many treaties with the Métis. But, the government, yet again, didn't keep their word and didn't follow the laws of giving them what the treaties had promised. To conclude, Riel was compelled to take arms. The lack of control, caused the government to spend millions and ended in destruction. • 10. Slave Rebellions, By Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser, And... In the 18th century of colonial America, slavery was an enormous impact on the Southern economy and continued to grow exponentially. It helped with a widespread growth of the southern, agricultural economy. In doing so, slaves were recognized as property and treated as such: through prejudice and misappropriation. Because of this practice of disrespect, tensions heightened and slave began to voice their aggravation that freedom was a must. The most violent and bold movements included slave rebellions. Slave rebellions, such as ones executed by Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser, and Denmark Vesey, were effective in the nature of showing plantation owners and the United States, in general, that the abolition for slavery was a necessity through the myriad of occurrences. Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser, and Denmark Vesey were all very different in their own way, but synonymous in the impact they produced in 18th and 19th century history. Nat Turner was born on October 2nd, 1800 into a slave plantation in Southampton County, Virginia. Unlike the vast majority of slave owners, his slave owner, Benjamin Turner, provided the young Turner with a privileged lifestyle where he could receive an elementary education and play and intermingle with the white children. His childhood was also centered around the bible and a Christian way of life. His childhood was effected significantly when his father left his family to venture to the North. • 11. Summary Of The Painting : Annunciation And Expulsion From... On October 22, 2017, I had the opportunity to learn about the works of Renaissance art while observing the painting The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. completed by Giovanni Di Paolo in the fourteenth century A.D. The painting is located in the West Building of the National Gallery, designed by American architect John Russell Pope. We entered through the Madison Dr. entrance and walked through the Roman– inspired columns of the rotunda, and proceeded to the left into the "barrel–vaulted sculpture hall" (National Gallery of Art) and entered Gallery 3, where my painting rested. This West Building of the National Gallery focuses on European artworks completed between the thirteenth through sixteenth centuries. The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise was completed by Giovanni Di Paolo in 1435 A.D. This painting was smaller than I previously envisioned, as its dimensions are 40 centimeters by 46.4 centimeters. Compared to other paintings in the gallery, it was smaller in size, as most of the paintings were over 100 centimeters in width. Other paintings in the gallery consisted of other religious portraits that were much taller. With the frame, it is 54.93 centimeters by 58.74 centimeters and 6.99 centimeters in depth. The frame of the painting is wooden and gold, with little dark blue crosses and red circle details, and engraved floral designs running along the middle. It also displayed obvious signs of wear as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These changes are emphasized in the overall journey that is taken, the tests that are given, and after the seventh heaven is reached what happens after. Each story has the same result that their main protagonist is trying to reach God, but one of the biggest differences throughout Bistami's story is that Gabriel is not there to help his main character through the ascension to God. In Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses Rushdie tells a story about two men, Saladin Chamcha and Gibreel Farishta, oddly connected by the fact that they both survive the hijacking of their aircraft. Throughout the novel, Gibreel has powerful dreams in which the narrator brings up the topic of the Satanic Verses. The Satanic Verses were supposedly verses that Muhammad said were part of the Quran and then were later revoked. The Verses allegedly said that Allah was not the only god and that there were three slightly lesser female deities. It is believed that the Satanic Verses were removed from the Quran because they accepted females as divine. During the course of the novel, Rushdie uses the narrator, whom we assume to be Satan himself, to illustrate to the reader why women are more inclined to not follow the strict rules of Islam, and instead stray towards to devil because of better quality of life promised with the devil as opposed to the demeaning and shameful life they lead in the religion of Islam. In the "Mahound" chapter of The Satanic Verses, the narrator tells the story of Ibrahim and his wife and son, Hagar and Ismail. He took them to a "waterless wilderness" (96) where he abandoned them, but before he left Hagar asked him "Can this be God's will?" (96), and Ibrahim replied that it was. The narrator says that men have always used God as an excuse to mistreat women in their lives and then goes off on a tangent thinking to himself "Small wonder, then, that women have turned to me" (96). This is where the reader can make the inference that the narrator is Satan because women are turning to him and away from God and religion. They feel as though they are treated better by the devil rather than God because the men in Islamic societies always justify the horrible things they do to women by saying it is indeed God's will. Later on in the book in the chapter "A City Visible but Unseen" Rushdie again shows the favoritism of males over females. Zechariah's The Riddle Of The Annunciation With the initial exchange between Mary and the Angel resolved, this discussion now turns its attention to the central point of the Annunciation passage, the announcement of Christ, and Mary's confusion at this pronouncement. To truly understand that scriptural passage, it is necessary to discuss the possible reasons for what has been called The Riddle of the Annunciation, that is, why a girl who is betrothed to be married and, presumably, understands the origin of children, questions how the Angel's announcement could pertain to her. The simplest explanation to this question is also the least satisfying. This is that, for some reason, Mary is ignorant of the way children are conceived. This could partially explain Zechariah's objection in the previous story in Luke which this is designed to parallel. However, Landry goes on to note that such a clunky and unreasonable objection does not seem to fit. Elsewhere, Luke does not hold himself so slavishly to formal patterns that he damages the flow of his story. It seems that if Luke were slavishly following the formal pattern for an annunciation, he would have picked an objection that would not be so confusing or even indecipherable to his reader. In fact, Landry asserts with Schaberg that those who immediately jump to Luke simply slavishly following the annunciation format "have given up too soon on the logic of the story." This discussion agrees with that conclusion; the literary solution ignores Luke's actual text and simply takes the easy solution to sidestep rather than address this question. A rejection of the literary solution to the riddle is further supported elsewhere in Luke's own Gospel, and these will be discussed later within the discussion of solutions that reject historicity of the virgin birth ... • 17. The Myth Of An Angel An angel is defined as a spiritual being believed to act as an attendant, agent, or messenger of God, conventionally represented in human form with wings and a long robe. This definition explains what many people believe an angel to be. When you hear the word angel, is this what you believe them to be, too? On the other hand, Iblis is to be defined as a jinn who refused to bow to Adam. He is believed to entice humans and jinn to commit evil through deception. Another name for Iblis would be Satan. When you hear either of these names, is this what you believe this figure to be? Each of these figures also has a connotation related to them in terms of good and evil. Being considered "good" is defined as to be desired or approved of or that which is morally right. On the contrary, being considered "evil" is defined as profoundly immoral and malevolent. By these definitions, I am sure that you can already make an assumption on which force is evil and which is good. Throughout Islam, each of these beings play a major role in the history and background of the religion, along with the importance of each in terms of the part they play related to Allah. In relation to Allah, angels have a role that is well known as "instruments of his will." The Defence Of Poesy By Sir Philip Sidney Sir Philip Sidney argued for the positive value of imaginative literature in The Defence of Poesy, in which he claimed that literature should 'teach and delight'. The influence of Sidney's claim can be seen in John Skelton's work 'The Bowge of Courte' and Thomas Nashe's 'The Choise of Valentines'. Skelton's 'The Bowge of Court', has been described as 'a fifteenth–century dream vision built on the model of the morality play' and 'The Choise of Valentines' as 'an Ovidian erotic poem', which elaborates 'a tale of impotence and erotic substitution.' While both poems are rich in their differences, due to the satiric and erotic genres, they share the similarity of belonging to a very specific time. By examining the origins d interpreting Sidney's presentation of the phrase 'teach and delight', the ways in which Skelton and Nashe's texts maintain Sidney's claim can be discussed. Skelton teaches through 'The Bowge of Court', by employing allegory as a way to critique the court, and uses satire as a form of poetic council. Nashe teaches in 'The Choise of Valentines' by presenting his text and an example of originality and satirising the idea of performance. Skelton delights in his text by using the symbol of the ship as an ornament added to the truth of the poem. Botticelli is using the biblical motif to foreshadow Christ being born. Christ is the right hand of God, so even the annunciation of his coming must be holy and divine. While there is no bible evidence, many believe the angel Gabriel sat at the left hand of God. Rabbi David Cooper says the angel is "connected with the attribute of Gevorah on the left side of the Tree of Life. Whereas Michael is on God's right hand, Gabriel is on God's left hand. The left hand is the one that metes out punishment; the right hand overrules strict justice and is more merciful and thus more lenient" (p. 45). Botticelli seems to agree with the theory of Gabriel sitting at God's left hand by the placement on the angel. While the does have a column directly diving the space, the gaps between the columns and the walk way into the chapel combines the two sections. Botticelli seems to be inferring for the angel to walk into the chapel and see Mary. The figures are also bowing toward one another. Giovanni di Paolo uses golden texture to display divinity, line to illustrate architectural perspective, and a strategic use of scale throughout the composition in order to portray the importance of the religious context. His personal artistic stylization, the experimentation of the Italian Renaissance but still firmly painting with Medieval Pictorial Tradition, and the use of symbolism can also demonstrate the religious meaning of the piece. Furthermore, in the context of Giovanni di Paolo's The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise, the conversation between monetary and cultural value and the controversy of art being exhibited in its country of origin will be discussed. Giovanni di Paolo gained distinction in the Sienese School of painting in the Gothic style. Believed to use a style book for reference while painting, Giovanni di Paolo was extremely influenced by Trecento and Quattrocento Italian artists. He started by mimicking other artists like Gentile da Fabriano, but developed his own experimentation with religious pieces later on in his life. Although he copied the concepts in his earlier works, like the Raising of Lazarus by Duccio, his scenes were more lively, vivid, and realistically represented. Later in his life, Giovanni became skilled in painting illuminated manuscripts, which are recognized today because the early influences of the Italian Renaissance are present in his depiction of naturalism, like his experimental linear perspective in The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise. Like all artists in the early Italian Renaissance, Giovanni only painted religious narratives correlating to the Catholic influences. Uniformed biblical narratives that most could understand were sought after, so schools and monasteries taught artists and those artists were later commissioned by Catholic churches. The lack of other means for patronage lead to strict representation of religious art as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As I grew older the more I tried to become independent, the less my mom could protect me and the more I had to start relying on myself. My mom has always been overprotective to the point that some people still call her paranoid. When I was little I was never allowed to leave her side, I was lucky she didn't home school me. Salinger, Holden Caulfield struggles to leave the real world around him which he constantly fails to fit in. He is expelled from three schools before going to Pencey. He then leaves Pencey for New York before Christmas. After experiencing the coldness of society in New York, He decides to hitchhike to the West alone, escaping the society and leaving his family behind. Instead, he chooses to dream about living in the fantasy world in his mind where all things he resists do not exist. Among those things he resists in the real world, the phoniness of adults, the unavoidable loss of children's innocence and his unbreakable bond with his family are the most significant ones that schedule Holden's canceled departure. Holden is unwilling to get along with phonies at his schools. When Holden explains the reason why he leaves Elkton Hills School to Mr. Spencer, he gives an example: "For instance, they had this headmaster, Mr. Haas, that was the phoniest bastard I ever met in my life" (Salinger 17). Holden finally drops out of Elkton Hills because of the phoniness of his headmaster even though Holden has no direct contact with him. • 35. Analysis Of Angels Displaying The Crown Of Thorns There are several miniatures in particular that are meant to evoke piety, for Anne, as well as that which she hoped her son would display, in time. Angels Displaying the Crown of Thorns (Fol. 30r) depicts two angels reverently holding a golden crown of thorns, referencing that worn by Christ. In Angels Displaying the Eucharist in a Monstrance (Fol. 11v), four angels carefully hold a monstrance, a device by which the Host of communion could be displayed for worship and respectful contemplation. These angels are in a similar setting and arrangement to those holding the crown of thorns, and both images share the same main purpose, as well: to have two extra sections of this prayer book inadvertently dedicated towards recalling the Passion of Christ. There are also some other possible implied purposes, though. The inclusion of the crown of thorns in one folio serves as a reminder of the fact that Anne had privileged access to Sainte–Chapelle, which she undoubtedly took advantage of, built by Louis IX following his obtainment of the Crown of Thorns, as a place in which to house it, along with other such articles. Her piety is thus re–emphasised through yet another display of devotion for her son to follow. In a similar manner, the monstrance, an object of great importance to the devout, would serve the same purpose. Yet, there is also the sense that Anne is showcasing the opulent objects at her disposal, for the crown of thorns was certainly not a replaceable, nor common, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This was accomplished in a seamless manner as this piece looks so natural. Foreshortening was used in most the panels especially the idle one where the Virgin is laying in an almost upright slumber. The bottom piece as she is sitting in the highchair holding baby Jesus she again appears to be exaggerated with a longer upper body. The proportion in relation to the whole piece is true to size except showing the Virgin to be larger than life almost in a sense. All the Saints appear to be the same size in scale whereas the Virgin is longer in the legs and upper body. The Master of Monte Oliveto dates back to ca. 1320. • 37. The Annunciation Explored through the Era of Italian... The Annunciation is a Christian celebration of the iconic moment that the archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother to the Son of God, Jesus. The story of the Annunciation derives chiefly from the biblical Gospel of Luke, and has been portrayed abundantly and variously in many visual art forms from the earliest centuries of Christianity and Christian iconography. This essay will explore the depiction of the Annunciation and symbolism in the period of the Italian Renaissance and pay particular attention towards the development of the focus on spiritualism towards naturalism through the refined language of expression and gesture from the 14th century to the late 15th century. As a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fig. 1 captures the very moment that the archangel Gabriel comes down from the heavenly realm to earth to announce to Mary that she will conceive the Christ–child and he shall be called Jesus. The gold of his crown is representative of the "celestial realm that he has left to deliver this message" (Kleiner, 2010:387). The announcement is depicted very much in the moment as the words are quite literally illustrated with the text "Ava gratia plena Dominus tecum" (Van Dijk, 1999:420), which leave his mouth from left to right as if they were encapsulated in a speech bubble. The phrase is in fact inscribed in Latin and reads as "Hail, Mary, full of grace, blessed art thou among women" (Van Dijk, 1999:420). The draping cloth around Gabriel's gold–infused light blue robe whips around the angel as if he had just land and his wings, which are still erect, depict an effortless grace of divine delicacy in the way that Martini executed them. Making use of undulating, long curved linear lines, they are almost liquid–like in their fluidity. The angel is painted holding a branch of olive leaves in his left hand. This is a symbol of the Christ–head and his coming to earth as the "Prince of Peace" (Emmerson, 2006:456), and also makes a reference to the traditional biblical story of Noah, the ark and the dove returning with an olive branch as a promise of the covenant of peace made by God with man (Genesis 8:11, English Standard Version) In the middle of the very shallow ... World War I was unlike any other war that had ever been seen before. It changed how wars were fought by introducing trenches, tanks, machine guns, chemical warfare, and planes into combat. The war caused disillusionment and uncertainty in society. The accounts written about by Gabriel Chevallier forewarn of the consequences war can have. Chevallier questions why we go to war and what sense of nationality gives the right to fight and kill for your country. Before World War I France had not been at war since 1871. Forty–three years of peace had caused them to fall behind in military advancements. At the beginning of the war the French were still using the same war tactics that Napoleon used. The soldiers ... Donatello is considered to be one of the most influential artists of the 15th century. A member of the innovative group of painters, architects and sculptors that revolutionised art in Florence at the beginning of the 15th century, he succeeded in becoming perhaps the most successful in his field due to his understanding of the aspects of classical sculpture and the creative and emotive way in which he adapted them to his own works. Set during a period of time where the sacred nature of a woman's purity was highly valued, the angel Gabriel's message to the Virgin Mary was not one entirely void of danger and aprehension. An unwed mother would undoubtedly be persecuted by her peers and this is the danger that Mary faced with the deliverance of the news.
