buildingprocess commencinganddeal withunforeseen issues as they occurred. Whenthe work onsite commencedIwas
generally givenmanagement of all aspects of the ground works andall of the structural elements of the building.
In the Buildingtrade it is generally accepted that ground works and structures are the hardest contractors to manage especially
interms of health and safety and quality at my instigationthe seniormanagement reviewedand redrafted the quality
management procedures as it very soonbecameobvious to me that the mainissuewas that the original procedures were not
adequate to control the quality of work produced. The Sub- contractors were turning out work that was of a sufficientstandard

3. to satisfy therequirements of the buildingspecificationthatformedtheir contracts, but this didnot allowforfollowingtrades
and an acceptable error insay a foundationdid not allowthebrick layerfollowingtheground worker to achievetheir required
standard without considerableextra work. This of courseledto bickeringamongstcontractors and management timebeing
wasted sortingout disputes as well as considerableexpense inhavingwork redone that was withinspeciationbut not suitable
for followingtrades. Mostmanagers at Wates had 2 or 3 contractors to manage. Ioften had periods where I was managing
anything upto 5 sub-contractors. WhenWates offered meredundancy inearly 2010 I reluctantly decidethat itwas timeto turn
my back onthe buildingtrade and look elsewhereforemployment.
