The Personality Mask
The Brief
Identity is a unique thing. All of us are seeking something in our lives to add meaning to our
existence but what is more is that we are constantly attempting to communicate to others and
there are many reasons for this. We want to be heard. We want our ideas to be important and to
be taken seriously.
Finding ways to attempt these is really a part of the creative process. It is the how you might want
to manipulate what you can in order to get others to see you the way you want them to.
Sometimes you may think that isn’t important and you’d rather see you for yourself and not terribly
concerned about what and how others might see you.
Marcel Proust was an Essayist, a novelist and very much a thinker! In the late 19
th
Century, he
popularised a questionnaire to discover individuals true nature. Answering questionnaires can be a
daunting task for some and real fun for others. Perhaps this type of questionnaire is something you
are about to do for the first time. Either way, this assignment is about how you might want others
to view yourself and how you would want yourself to be represented in the unusual way or perhaps
YOUR way!

2. Answer the Proust questionnaire and visualize each answer in your own way using
any medium you like. You may modify the mask as you see fit.
The questionnaire is a series of questions in relation to you.
Write down your answers first and then figure out the visual equivalent.
3. Experiment, explore and modify
Use whatever medium you see fit. You can draw, paint, paste, cut, incorporate any kind
of style according to your taste and interest. In the end it would reflect your personality!
It is highly recommended that you work with an existing blank mask which you need to purchase.
However, if you have an alternative suggestion, feel free to ask your lecturer!
Answer the questionnaire using the google form link on TIMES CTS module site.
Answer all 35 questions there.
Requirements:
1. Apply Ideation Strategy acquired from workshops/lectures!
It is important that you note down strategies you have discovered in the workshops and
tutorials and literally apply these strategies in the assignment. Use the ‘Apply,
Investigate, Re-apply then finish’ approach to your assignment.
2. Recording of Ideation Process
Evidence of processes done at no.1 above, MUST begin in the Idea journal (IDJ) by your
attempts to visualize and brainstorm ideas. These evidences can be diagram form,
sketches and clear scribbles or collages. Use any number of pages you like. Indicate date
and time for all idea entries or processes. Scan these ideation pages and upload them as
your post for assignment 01 in your e-portfolio. It must be evident that your post is already
online upon submission of your final work. Remember to add short write ups of your posts.
3. Submission of final work
Submission of your final work must be a presentation of your physical ‘mask’. These must
be brought to class session on submission day and displayed. You MUST take good
snapshots of your mask for upload into your e-portfolio as your final post for assignment
01 accompanied by short write ups.
4. Keep your masks and improve on them!
Your masks will be on display for the CTS final exhibition and final assessment on week
14. Do not discard your work! Upon receiving feedback from your assignment 01
submission, you could still improve your work till the day of the exhibition.
Finally, make this mask personal to you! Something you would want others to see about
you! Let it engage, entertain, intrigue or perhaps shock! YOU DECIDE! Refer to sample
marking rubric to get a clear understanding of the marking.
