“How the Deaf and Queer
Communities are Tackling
Oppression Together” Alex Lu
Similarities between groups- I.E
deaf/ queer kids being born to
hearing/ straight parents
Making queer spaces more
accessible to deaf lgbtq+ folks

“ Texas Teacher showed Photo of
Her wife, and Was Barred From the
Classroom” New York Times
Hit home because I want to be
a teacher, and living in Oregon
I’m lucky because I do have job
protection for loving whomever
I love, but this is a sad reminder
that that’s not the case
everywhere.

Discrimination map
A good resourcing for seeing what
protections exist for queer people across
the U.S
Has multiple topics: job, housing, ect. and
is broken down by sexuality and gender-
identity

Rosie O’Donnell adoption
Adoption was an issue in the
early 2000’s and is still a
prominent issue.
There's still people out there
who legitimately think it’s better
for a child to grow up in the
foster care system than have
same sex parents, and laws
throughout the U.S still widely
vary
Same sex adoption vs LGBT+
community member adoption
7. Quote
“It takes no compromise to give people their
rights...it takes no money to respect the
individual. It takes no political deal to give
people freedom. It takes no survey to remove
repression.”
― Harvey Milk
8. My issue-
LGBTQ+ youth
More likely to be bullied or
harassed
More likely to self harm or
attempt suicide
More likely to be homeless or
couch surfing
Need queer youth spaces/
general queer spaces that
aren't bars
Need coonection to other
queer people both youths and
adults
9. The future of the queer movement
Crossroads- we’ve made lots of progress in the last 50 years but only for
certain queers folks (mainly cis white able bodied gay bi and lesbian folks)
Current administrations hostility towards queer folks and resulting backwards
progress in acceptance
Conversion therapy, bullying of queer kids, queer self harm and suicide rates,
trans domestic violence rates, trans healthcare, police and queer folks,
disabled queer folks and marriage, Queer poc, ect
Going forward queer liberation needs to focus on the most disadvantaged
groups : trans people, queer poc, disabled queer folks, poor queer people,
ect.
Queer liberation means economic and social equality for all queer folks and
others who have been left behind by existing power structures
