The Story of Ruby Bridges Robert Coles

Plot Summary
The story of Ruby Bridges is about a young African American girl whose story will go on in history as one of
the first black children to attend an all-white elementary school. Taking place in the 1960’s during a time of
extreme racial tensions and segregation, the story tells the tale of the plight of this young girl as she bravely
sets out to change the course of the United States forever. Through courage, faith and determination, Ruby
endures the harsh hands of prejudice and injustice to break through the walls of segregation. Her story is
truly inspiring and a prime example of the strength and power of our youth.

Plot High Point
The climax of the story takes place when Ruby is positioned in front of the school with a mob of angry white
people screaming obscenities and threats of violence at her and she stops in front of them and closes her
eyes and seems to be speaking to them. Then she walks into the school building. Later in the story we find
out that Ruby was actually praying for them. She was asking God to forgive them for their actions.

Main Characters
1. Ruby is a brave girl who is pure and wise in a way only children can be. She exhibits good morals and
values. She also understands forgiveness. She is very courageous, and can also be viewed as a hero for her
courageous actions. 2. Mrs. Henry can be viewed as being thoughtful and kind. She tried to make Ruby’s
experience as positive as could be given the circumstances. Mrs. Henry can also be viewed as a progressive
thinker since she was willing to teacher Ruby despite the views of the majority of people in that area during
that time period.

Setting
This story took place in the 1960’s during the time when the U.S. was in the process of changing laws and
integrating the South. Ruby was attending William Franz Elementary School in New Orleans.

Personal Opinion
In my opinion, this was a great story. I like the fact that it is based on actual events that have occurred in
history. It also exemplifies the courage that children possess to achieve goals and overcome differences. It
also personifies the message of tolerance and acceptance. Segregation was a horrid period of time for
African Americans. Their plight has been a continuing struggle throughout United States history. This story is
one of many that help us reflect on the history of our nation.
