The functions of management
1. The Functions of Management
The first step in selecting from planning, organizing, leading and controlling is to define what
management is. The textbook definition, “management is the process of working with people
and resources to accomplish organizational goals” (p. 14). To be a good manager you must have
a clear fix on both effectiveness and efficiency. One must be effective in reaching your
organizational purposes and efficient involves fulfilling the organizational purposes without
short changing and getting more out of your money you invest into the business. It would be
difficult to choose one management functions since it is important to know all four and paying
attention to all of them. Since, I must choose I would pick leading in order words mobilizing
people. In order for your business to be successful you must be able to motivate your workers, to
become excited about getting the most out of working for you, while at the same time doing their
best. The textbook definition, “leading is stimulating people to be high performers. It includes
motivating and communicating with employees, individually and in groups. Leading involves
close day to day contact with people, helping to guide and inspire them toward achieving team
and organizational goals. Leading takes place in teams, departments and divisions, as well as at
the tops of large organizations” (p. 16). In other words leading is a group effort that takes place
at the top and run down like a waterfall to the bottom. A good manager must consider the
organization structure and work their magic in teams, departments and division as well as the
CEO and board of directors to remind them of the goals and objectives of the organization.
